We welcome to Katherine High School a won- derful group of Year 7s and an- other 50 new students across all year levels to our school com- munity. I look forward to working with the 15 new teaching staff, a number of new administration and classroom support staff as we move through the many ac- tivities and events that make up the school calendar. I hope to see as many parents and students as possible at our Meet and Greet Night in Week 5. This night provides the op- portunity to meet your child’s teachers and also to get more of an insight into the breath of programs and extension ac- tivities that we provide at the school. This year I am hoping that we can pass our previous high of 100 parents in atten- dance. The evening will be held in the School Gym and there will be student work and pro- grams on display. For parents who are interested there will be a school tour conducted at 6.00pm for those parents want- ing to see first hand the facilities the school provides. Whole School assemblies are held every odd week and it is al- ways good to see parents there supporting their children. An- other reminder, the Swimming Carnival is coming up in Week 6, it would be great to see par- ents dropping in and seeing first hand what a fabulous event it is for the school. Good luck to all staff and stu- dents for 2012. Anne White Principal Around KHS

Katherine Academy’s Awards NightWords by Ryan WoolfePhotos by Katherine Staff

The Katherine Academy gathered to celebrate and refl ect on what has been another fantastic year and to also farewell the programme’s two Year 12 leavers. The night was highlighted by the presence of ex St Kilda footballer Bob Jones who presented the Best and Fairest awards. Bob spoke to the boys about getting the best out of themselves and grabbing hold of every opportunity that comes their way regardless of what path they choose in life.

EDUCATIONKatherine Academy

December 2011

Keelan Fejo capped a hugely successful year in taking out the Award for Excellence at the Katherine Academy’s Award Night, held at the Nitmiluk information centre in December.

Keelan’s committed approach to both sport and study, along with his contribution as a role model to the younger Academy members made the Year 12 a well-deserved winner of the Katherine Academy’s top award.

The honour followed Keelan’s earlier claim of Best and Fairest for the senior group, narrowly edging out Kayle Kossack, while Davis Turner was best for the Year 10s ahead of Loy Fordham.

In Year 9, Daniel Turner was recognised for an outstanding year of football, taking the Best and Fairest out from Tyrone Fejo as Wade Gillett (Year 8) and Jayden Braun (Year 7) were awarded ahead of Jade Hamilton (Year 8) and Braeden Hamilton (Year 7) respectively.

For school attendance, senior student Matthew Govan claimed the senior award with an attendance for the year of 99%, while Daniel Cameron claimed the Year 10 award, recording 96% attendance.

In Year 9, Eddie Wosomo excelled with 95%, while Cooper Pracy backed up his 2010 attendance honour with another strong result of 96%, and Jayden Braun was on top in Year 7 with 98%.

The Deadly Bloke awards are given each year in recognition of Academy members whose contribution to Academy life, beyond football, is deserving of recognition.

With this in mind, it was impossible to go past Lawrence Watego for the seniors, Lawrence embraces Clontarf and always upholds all of the values will instil. He was this year selected in the leadership group and has been a role model for the younger Academy members.

The Year 10 Deadly went to another very popular choice, Travis Cooper, while Dean Watson claimed the Year 9 trophy. Abraham Barbara was presented with the Year 8 award and AJ Rosas that for Year 7.

This middle year’s student with the most votes in the teacher’s award was Ray Ray Fordimail, while from senior school Lawrence Watego took out the votes to claim the second of three awards for the night.

Keelan Fejo picked up a second award in special recognition of his selection in the Premier League for the Wanderers Football Club in the NTFL, while Lawrence Watego (NT Rugby Union) and Kayle Kossack (NT AFL, Rugby League and Boxing) were also honoured.

The Katherine Academy’s Awards Night was a very positive end to a highly successful year for the programme, which saw its members achieve high levels on the sporting fi eld and in the classroom.

The evening gave the Academy an opportunity to farewell the programme’s two Year 12 graduates, Keelan Fejo and Jamie Walker, the pair having secured fulltime work and aspirations to travel overseas respectively for 2012. In terms of role models, these two young men are a perfect example of what can be achieved by a sustained effort at school.
