March 2018 Dear KG1 Family, In unit 4, in the theme Where We Are in Place and Time, the children loved talking about the animals that live on each layer of the rainforest and how they are adapted to each of them. In the Art Center, the children drew pictures of animals, birds, and insects that live in each layer of the rainforest, and these were added later to our life-sized rainforest. Life- size rainforest Pia is drawing a bat Karim is drawing an eagle In Art, we used clay to create creepy crawlies that we find on the forest floor and understory layer.

Wetalkedabouttheplantsthatgrowintherainforestandfoundoutthatsomeplantsproducefoodandvegetables,medicines,andthingsweuseeveryday.

Webroughtsometropicalfruitstoclass,suchasmango,papaya,andavocado,aswellasitems,suchasblackpepper,cinnamonsticks,vanillapowder,coffeebeans,anddarkchocolate.Thechildrenwereveryinterestedinobservingandlookingattheitems.Weinvestigatedtheoutsideofthefruits,theplantthatthefruitcomesfrom,andfinallytheinsideofthefruit.Themostexcitingpartwastastingtheitemsandweencouragedthestudentstodescribewhattheysaw,felt,andtasted.Theyalsocreatedobservationaldrawingsofdifferentfruits.Asaconclusion,thechildrenrealizedthatthepeopleintherainforesthaveeverythingtosurvive,andthattherainforestisrich.
