NOTE FROM PRESIDENT JOE CAREY
July 4th is once again upon us and I still cannot figure out how it
got here so fast. It seems like Easter was just last week. Anyway, I
guess I will just have to accept the fact that it is here and join
everyone else for a picnic and a few beverages.
Lots of activities have been going on at the center over the past
month so I hope you were able to find something of interest.
Speaking of activities, the Advisory Committee is starting to plan
for the upcoming annual Halloween Party be held on Friday,
October 14 starting at 6 pm. Tickets will be available the first week in August at the bargain price of $25.
We still plan to have the usual costume judging, DJ music with dancing, money raffle, wine, beer, soda, a
special Halloween drink, great food and door prizes. This year we will not be having the tricky tray basket
drawings because of the time and effort it takes to secure and prepare them. We found we spent more time at
the party drawing tickets than we did having Halloween fun. Put the date on your calendar and hope to see
you at the party.
In closing, I hope you have a happy and safe 4th of July. While you’re at it, take a few minutes while
enjoying your holiday and silently thank those brave patriots that were responsible for giving us the greatest
country ever. It's not much to ask for the price they paid. Remember freedom is never free!
Next Advisory Committee Meeting Thursday, July 28th
Thank you to Elizabeth Walling for your generous donation to the center.

LIBRARY NEWS- Summer has arrived, how cool! Each book case has now been assigned a number attached to the front of the case. This should make it easier to locate a particular author since the book cases are in different areas. The “Harlequin Series”, from 2012 through 2015, some in Large Print, are located in book case number 8. For the month of June, 19 new books have been cataloged, none are Large Print. Once again, thanks to all for your donations.

Notes from Wendy…July 2016 On Friday, July 22nd we will honor our center volunteers. Keyport Senior Center Volunteers are essential
to the success of our center. Volunteers are involved is every aspect of center life. They are program
leaders, project participants, office workers, Advisory Committee members, Grandfriends, service providers,
gardeners, librarians, teachers, bakers, and many wear more than one hat. We salute and thank these very
dear people for all the hard work, time and support they give to our center.
Bravo! Keyport Garden Club for sponsoring another great weekend for residents to display their unique and
beautiful gardens to the public.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to… Rick Makin for taking on the co-leadership of our Keynote Chorus
Garden Walk Volunteers: Co-Chairs Sue Layland and Vickie Snoy and our many volunteers: Lynn
Liebowitz, Marlene Kirby, Lucy Rossi, Virginia Smith, Susan Pike, Margaret Matthews, Letty Lombardo
and all those members who stopped in on Saturday and/or Sunday. Thanks for your support and all the
goodies, too. Great job!
Volunteers handling the Farmer’s Market Voucher program: Lillian Baliff, Kathy Massey, Letty Lombardo,
Eileen Angrason, June Dougherty—great job!
Lynn Liebowitz for coloring books and supplies
Bettie O’Leary for coloring books
Eileen Angrason—for jewelry, tea, coffee and…taking on the job as center photographer--great photos of
center activities.
Volunteers please note: we appreciate every single thing our members do for the center. However, to be
considered a center volunteer you must have logged at least 4 hours per month in volunteer hours to qualify
for our appreciation luncheon. Need more hours for next year?…let me know.
Littering in the center parking lot—please help us keep our parking lot clear of all litter (gum, cigarette
butts, papers etc.) If you see someone littering please let the office staff know. We all work very hard to
make our Senior Center outstanding in every way. A dirty parking lot does not enhance our center.

*************************************************************************** Grandfriends – New times ahead
Once again, school closed in June. The children may look forward to summer and “yea, no more school”
but they’ll enjoy recollections of their past year. They will also take with them memories of their fun
times at our Center--the games, crafts, puzzles, building blocks, Legos, coloring books and crayons.
They’ll remember the music--singing and playing instruments—and let’s not forget storytime and all
the books there are to look at. Perhaps, especially, they’ll remember getting to know our
Grandfriends. The Grandfriends program will also be on hiatus during the summer, but in the fall, we
will meet again with a new crop of pre-schoolers. We meet on alternate Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:15.
The schedule will be posted in the September Newsletter. Over the summer we will gather lots of
projects and will work on a very active program for the 2016-2017 school year. The new children will
meet their new Grandfriends and learn new crafts, new words and new games.
We hope you will be with us then. It costs nothing to join, and you’ll have a great time. Look for our
poster showing the joy and fun Grandfriends can bring to both children and grown-ups. It’s just one
or two Thursdays a month (your choice) 9:30 to 11:15. Remember to check the September
Newsletter for the starting date. Rose Kestner, Grandfriends
