If you had the chance to logonto http://www.assgotserved.com last year you would finda one-page Web site discuss-ing the politics of networkingand servers. This would makeperfect sense, since it was anactual server being run out of somebodys rectum.

I really appreciate thefreedom that G4 allows us, Idont think any other networkwould have ever approachedit with the same kind of open-mindedness. said TV person-ality Kevin Pereira.

Besides hatching the ideafor the perfect cyborg, KevinPereira has come up with manyof the shows' skits as the idea

man, and half of the hostingteam on channel G4s Attackof the Show. Along with OliviaMunn, they are in charge of reporting the constant changestaking place in the interweband the overall tug and pull thatis the video game industry.

Talking with Kevin Pereirais a surprisingly calm andfriendly experience. You haveto wonder how being one of thefew faces in the new industry of televised video game journal-ism changes you. Is it a posi-tion you seek out or somethingyou just stumbled upon?

Unlike so many others,Pereira is unchanged by thecelebrity curse. His devotionto the game industry is clear, and his enthusiasm is infectiousenough to make even the most

The main topic on our mindsthat day was the impendingeffects of two next generationsystem releases. As part of hisday job, Pereira happily coveredthe huge lines and camps acrossthe country to report on the hard-core video game fans. The fact

that Playstation 3 launched on aFriday and the Wii launched on aSunday meant the completion of the holy trinity for game consoles but the beginning of a dark agefor video games.

industry that is already strugglingto meet demand. The launch of the next-gen.systems hasbeen tumultu-ous, with death, greed and con-spiracy doingtheir part inbringing themost elite $10billion videogame indus-try back intothe news sinceRockstars GTAhot-coffee inci-dent. A situa-tion where oneof industrysmost success-

    ful companieswas brought toits knees by ac o n s e r v a t i v eSenate hearingdirectly mirror-ing the par-ents against offensivelyrics situation in theearly 80s.

The controversyhere was Sonys releas-ing its Playstation, despite knowing itcould not meet the highdemand from its crazedfans.

Death, rob-bery at gun-point and over-saturation of eBays servers(reaching pric-es upwards of $4,000), wereall responsesto a horribleshortage of game consoles, leading someto think it wasa purposefulshortage. Theholiday rush, mixed with theovershadowingof Nintendos

new Wii sys-tem by massmarketing of aniche commod-ity, would helpspur demand forSonys system even more oncepeople realized the short amountin stock.

Releasing a paltry 400,000copies of its system (whichretails for $600) is made evenmore embarrassing by the millioncopies of the Wii that Nintendomanaged to sell (at $250).

Pereiras own opinion onthe matter was that Nintendos

system is superior for the com-mon video game consumer andin a matter of years when theprice tag falls and more highprofile games become available,he expects the PS3 to be a moreworthwhile system.

As of right now, its just

doesnt make sense, Pereira said. When asked to give a few pointersin the art of journalism he franklyresponded, I would, but it is some-thing I know nothing about.

His frank response buoysmany of the accomplishmentsthat took him to get to his posi-tion as the face of G4. Starting inhigh school, Pereira had a pod-cast broadcast on his own web-

site, http://www.likemysweaty.com, under the stage name of Captain Immy. Discussing every-thing from games to his dadsold coats, he was able to do adaily half-hour show for 120 daysstraight at one point.

He also made his own shortmovies that wonregional awardsin Californiawhere he grewup, leading toa scholarship atthe Academy of Arts college inSan Francisco, which heattended fortwo months.I thought Ihad to do thecollege thing, since thatswhat every-body wants youto do, your par-

ents and yourteachers, but it just wasnt forme, Pereirasaid. After five yearsof network

managing, Pereira wascalled and given theopportunity to be ahost on the first nation-al Gaming Network.

Hes also incharge of their daily/weekly podcast, achore that he admits,is work, since now its

for a nationalcompany, but isstill fun. [Its]

just a little dif-ferent yougot to watchwhat you say.So does he stillplay games?Of course. Hisfavorite, as of now, is Gearsof War. He isan avid sup-porter of GameD e v e l o p e r sachieving thesame statusas Rockstars,Authors and

Filmmakers. He has boughtthe game twiceaf ter giv-ing away hisfirst copy to

a deserving intern and alreadybeating G4s beta version. Healso competes in Guitar Hero 2office tourneys, and is enjoyingthe heck out of the Wiis launchrepertoire.

Pereira works hard and keepsclose contact with his roots andhis fans. He truly cares for allaspects of the future and reputa-tion of the game industry.

Pereira's own opinion onthe matter is that Nintendo's

    system is superior
