To prevent injury and/or fire, take thefollowing precautions: Insert the unit all the way until it is fully

locked in place. Otherwise it may fly out ofplace during collisions and other jolts.

When extending the ignition, battery orground wires, make sure to use automotive-grade wires or other wires with an area of0.75mm2 (AWG18) or more to prevent wiredeterioration and damage to the wirecoating.

To prevent short circuits, never put or leaveany metallic objects (e.g., coins or metaltools) inside the unit.

If the unit starts to emit smoke or strangesmells, turn off the power immediately andconsult your Kenwood dealer.

Make sure not to get your fingers caughtbetween the faceplate and the unit.

Be careful not to drop the unit or subject it tostrong shock.The unit may break or crack because itcontains glass parts.

Do not touch the liquid crystal fluid if theLCD is damaged or broken due to shock. Theliquid crystal fluid may be dangerous to yourhealth or even fatal.If the liquid crystal fluid from the LCDcontacts your body or clothing, wash it offwith soap immediately.

2WARNINGTo prevent damage to the machine,take the following precautions: Make sure to ground the unit to a negative

12V DC power supply. Do not open the top or bottom covers of the

unit. Do not install the unit in a spot exposed to

direct sunlight or excessive heat or humidity.Also avoid places with too much dust or thepossibility of water splashing.

Do not set the removed faceplate or thefaceplate case in areas exposed to directsunlight, excessive heat or humidity. Alsoavoid places with too much dust or thepossibility of water splashing.

To prevent deterioration, do not touch theterminals of the unit or faceplate with yourfingers.

Do not subject the faceplate to excessiveshock, as it is a piece of precisionequipment.

When replacing a fuse, only use a new onewith the prescribed rating. Using a fuse withthe wrong rating may cause your unit tomalfunction.

To prevent short circuits when replacing afuse, first disconnect the wiring harness.

Do not place any object between thefaceplate and the unit.

During installation, do not use any screwsexcept for the ones provided. The use ofimproper screws might result in damage tothe main unit.

2CAUTION IMPORTANT INFORMATIONAbout the disc changer to beconnected:To connect a disc changer having the "O-N"switch to this unit, set the "O-N" switch to "N".To connect a disc changer having no "O-N"switch to this unit, the converter cord CA-DS100 and/or switching adapter KCA-S210Aare required as options.A disc changer doesn't work when it isconnected without using these options.If a model with no "O-N" switch is connected,some unavailable functions and informationthat cannot be displayed are generated.Note that none of the KDC-C100, KDC-C302,C205, C705, and non-Kenwood CD changerscan be connected.

You can damage both your unit and the CDchanger if you connect them incorrectly.

If you experience problems duringinstallation, consult your Kenwood dealer.

If the unit does not seem to be workingright, try pressing the reset button first. Ifthat does not solve the problem, consultyour Kenwood dealer.

Press the reset button if the Disc autochanger fails to operate correctly. Normaloperation should be restored.

Characters in the LCD may become difficultto read in temperatures below 41 F (5 C).

The illustrations of the display and the panelappearing in this manual are examples usedto explain more clearly how the controls areused. Therefore, what appears on the displayin the illustrations may differ from whatappears on the display on the actualequipment, and some of the illustrations onthe display may represent somethingimpossible in actual operation.

NOTE Cleaning the Faceplate TerminalsIf the terminals on the unit or faceplate getdirty, wipe them with a dry, soft cloth.

Cleaning the UnitIf the faceplate of this unit is stained, wipe itwith a dry soft cloth such as a silicon cloth.If the faceplate is stained badly, wipe the stainoff with a cloth moistened with neutralcleaner, then wipe neutral detergent off.

Applying spray cleaner directly to the unit mayaffect its mechanical parts. Wiping thefaceplate with a hard cloth or using a volatileliquid such as thinner or alcohol may scratchthe surface or erases characters.

Safety precautionsRDS (Radio Data System)When listening to an RDS station, theprogramme service name of the station isdisplayed, advising you quickly which station isbeing received.RDS (Radio Data System) stations alsotransmit frequency data for the same station.When you are making long trips, this functionautomatically alternative switches to theparticular frequency with the best receptionfor the particular network of stations that youwant to listen to. The data is automaticallystored, allowing you to switch quickly toanother RDS stations, broadcasting the sameprogramme, that has better reception. Theseinclude stations stored in the station presetmemory that you often listen to.

Enhanced Other NetworkStations that offer also transmit information about other RDSstations that have traffic information. Whenyou are tuned to a station that is nottransmitting traffic information, but anotherRDS station starts transmitting a trafficbulletin, the tuner automatically switches tothe other station for the duration of thebulletin.

AlarmWhen an emergency transmission (announcingdisasters, etc.) is sent, all current functions areinterrupted to allow the warning to bereceived.

About RDS

Cleaning the tape headWhen theres noise or the sound quality is badduring tape play the tape head maybe dirty,clean the tape head.

About Cassette tape If the tape is slack tighten it. If the cassette tape label is peeling off glue it

on again. Dont use deformed cassette tape. Dont place cassette tape on the dashboard

etc. where the temperature is high. Dont use cassette tape thats 100 minutes

long or longer.

Tuner features

The faceplate of the unit can be detached and taken with you,helping to deter theft.

Removing the FaceplatePress the Release button.The faceplate is unlocked, allowing you to detach it.

The faceplate is a precision piece of equipment and can bedamaged by shocks or jolts. For that reason, keep the faceplate inits special storage case while detached.

Do not expose the faceplate or its storage case to direct sunlightor excessive heat or humidity. Also avoid places with too muchdust or the possibility of water splashing.

1 Align the projections on the unit with the grooves on thefaceplate.

2 Push the faceplate in until it clicks.The faceplate is locked in place, allowing you to use the unit.

Switching to traffic information automatically when a trafficbulletin starts even when you aren't listening to the radio.

Press the [TI] button.Each time the button is pressed the Traffic Information functionturns ON or OFF.When it's ON, "TI" indicator is ON.When a traffic information station isn't being received the "TI"indicator blinks.When a traffic bulletin starts, "TRAFFIC" is displayed it and itswitches to traffic information.

During reception of a AM station when the Traffic Informationfunction is turned ON, it switches to a FM station.

player. Refer to the CD changer/ player manual. The name of a CD can be changed by the same operation you

used to name it.

1 Play the disc you want to attach a name to A title can't be attached to a MD. Disc Naming can't be done during CD text display.

2 Enter name set modePress the [NAME SET] button for at least 2 seconds."NAME SET" is displayed.

3 Move the cursor to the enter character positionPress the [4] or [] button.

4 Select the charactersPress the [FM] or [AM] button.

5 Repeat steps 3 through 4 and enter the name.6 Exit name set mode

Press the [NAME SET] button. When operation stops for 10 seconds the name at that time is

registered, and Name Set mode closes.

Disc Naming (DNPS)

Play the songs on all the discs in the disc changer in randomorder.

Press the [M.RDM] button.Each time the button is pressed the Magazine Random Play turnsON or OFF.When it's ON, "MRDM ON" is displayed.

When the [] button is pressed, the next song select starts.

Setting during operation beep sound etc. functions.The Menu system basic operation method is explained here. Thereference for the Menu items and their setting content is afterthis operation explanation.

1 Enter Menu modePress the [MENU] button for at least 1 second."MENU" is displayed.

2 Select the menu itemPress the [FM] or [AM] button.Example: When you want to set the beep sound select the

"BEEP" display.

3 Set the menu itemPress the [4] or [] button.Example: When "BEEP" is selected, each time the button is

You can continue by returning to step 2 and setting other items.

When other items that are applicable to the basic operation methodabove are displayed afterwards their setting content chart is entered.(Normally the uppermost setting in the chart is the original setting.)Also, the explanation for items that aren't applicable (etc.) are entered step by step.

It switches automatically when a news bulletin starts even if theradio isn't being listened to. Also, the time interval wheninterrupt is prohibited can be set.

News Bulletin with Timeout Setting

Setting the timer to turn this unit's power OFF automaticallywhen Standby mode continues.Using this setting can save the vehicle's battery power.

When poor reception is experienced, automatically switch toanother frequency broadcasting the same program in the sameRDS network with better reception.

Display Setting"AF ON" The AF function is ON."AF OFF" The AF function is OFF.

When the AF function is ON, the "RDS" indicator is ON.When no other stations with stronger reception are available for thesame program in the RDS network, you may hear the incomingbroadcast in bits and snatches. Turn OFF the AF function in such acase.

Sets the tuning mode.

When "NEWS 00M" "NEWS 90M" is set, the News BulletinInterrupt function is ON.When it's ON, the "NEWS" indicator is ON.When the news bulletin starts, "NEWS" is displayed, and itswitches to the news bulletin.

If you choose the "20M" setting, further news bulletins will not bereceived for 20 minutes once the first news bulletin is received.

The news bulletin volume is the same level that was set for trafficinformation (page 10).

This function is only available if the desired station sends PTY-codefor news bulletin or belongs to -Network sending PTY-code for news bulletin.

When the News Bulletin Interrupt function is ON, it switches to anFM station.

You can choose whether or not to restrict the RDS channels,received with the AF function for a particular network, to aspecific region.

Only use antenna conversion adapters (ISO-JASO) when theantenna cord has an ISO plug.

Make sure that all wire connections are securely made byinserting jacks until they lock completely.

If your vehicle's ignition does not have an ACC position, or if theignition wire is connected to a power source with constantvoltage such as a battery wire, the power will not be linked withthe ignition (i.e., it will not turn on and off along with theignition). If you want to link the unit's power with the ignition,connect the ignition wire to a power source that can be turnedon and off with the ignition key.

If the fuse blows, first make sure that the wires have not causeda short circuit, then replace the old fuse with one with the samerating.

Insulate unconnected wires with vinyl tape or other similarmaterial. To prevent short circuits, also do not remove the capson the ends of the unconnected wires or the terminals.

Connect the speaker wires correctly to the terminals to whichthey correspond. The unit may receive damage or fail to work ifyou share the - wires and/or ground them to any metal part inthe car.

After the unit is installed, check whether the brake lamps,indicators, wipers, etc. on the car are working properly.

If the console has a lid, make sure to install the unit so that thefaceplate does not hit the lid when closing and opening.

Connecting the ISO Connector (see p.22)The pin arrangement for the ISO connectors depends on the typeof vehicle you drive. Make sure to make the proper connections toprevent damage to the unit.The default connection for the wiring harness is described in 1below. If the ISO connector pins are set as described in 2 or 3,make the connection as illustrated.

When the connection is made as in 3 above, the unit's power will notbe linked to the ignition key. For that reason, always make sure to turnoff the unit's power when the ignition is turned off.To link the unit's power to the ignition, connect the ignition cable(ACC...red) to a power source that can be turned on and off with theignition key.

2 When the lower level is removed, remove the upper twolocations.

The frame can be removed from the top side in the same manner.

1 Engage the catch pins on the removal tool and remove the twolocks on the lower level.Lower the frame and pull it forward as shown in the figure.

What might seem to be a malfunction in your unit mayjust be the result of slight misoperation or miswiring.Before calling service, first check the following table forpossible problems.

General

? The power does not turn ON.014 The fuse has blown.

+ After checking for short circuits in the wires, replace the fuse withone with the same rating.

4 No ACC position on vehicle ignition.02+ Connect the same cable to the ignition as the battery cable.

? If you have selected Standby mode, the power will go OFFautomatically.03 4 The Power OFF Timer function has been activated.

+ If you do not want the power to go OFF automatically, cancel thePower OFF Timer function.

? Nothing happens when the buttons are pressed.044 The computer chip in the unit is not functioning normally.

+ Press the reset button on the unit (page 4).

? Theres a source you cant switch.054 Theres no tape inserted.

+ Set the media you want to listen to. If theres no media in thisunit, you can't switch to each source.
