Kenthurst Public School Excellence and Innovation in a Unique Community “The School of Choice” Term 1 Week 6 Friday 6 th March 2020 Principal’s Report What an exciting past couple of weeks we have had here at ‘The School of Choice’. Our Kenthurst leadership team attended The National Young Leaders Day ~ Halogen. Travelling by bus in the early hours of the morning, our students were so excited. Darling Harbour looked amazing and two of our boys were able ‘to assist’ Rove McManus get back on the stage! Please read the report by our SRC President Jasmine and Vice-President Ivy, further on in our newsletter. The Halogen Australia exists to inspire and influence a generation of young people, to lead themselves and others well. ‘The filament of the modern Halogen light-bulb is surrounded by a Halogen gas compound. The gas protects the filament and provides the conditions for it to burn hotter, longer and brighter than ever before. In a world where leaders seem to be switching off, or burning out regularly, the decisions made by those who will lead in the near future have never been more important. Halogen Australia seeks to provide the right conditions for producing a generation of leaders who will burn bright on behalf of those they lead.’ Swimming Carnivals Thank you to all of the parents who assisted at our school carnival. It was a fantastic day, organised by Mrs Popova and Miss Armstrong. Well done everyone, a great team effort. On Tuesday Mrs Popova and Miss Armstrong attended the Ridges Swimming Carnival, declaring our students displayed exemplary behaviour, with outstanding results. Further details, photos and results are in this newsletter. Literacy Pro We have purchased a new system called Literacy Pro. This matches students reading Lexile Range with appropriately levelled books, which they can choose from the Library. Literacy pro is a research-based, online assessment resource that provides teachers with evidence-based data so that they are informed when making teaching/learning decisions to further develop reading skills. Students monitor their progress and goals, taking charge of their personal reading journey using their ‘Personal Dashboard’. Voracious Readers Short Reads were introduced to Stage 3 this week and the students absolutely love them !!! Colourful large cards with interesting, informative texts are read, then students access online to complete a quiz. Wow! Every student was engaged when I visited the classrooms.

Ekipe North School in Vanuatu

Last year our SRC organised to raise money and stationery items for Ekipe North School in Vanuatu. During the last school holidays the Boemi family packed all the donated items up, and took them with them on their holiday to Vanuatu. There was 80kg of donated items these were then given to Frank at Won SmolBag, Frank then had to take the items onto the school, they finally received the items last week.

Halogen Young Leaders Conference

The National Young Leaders Day was an extremely memorable experience for the 2020 leadership team. Our school listened to 4 very inspirational speakers, including Rove McManus and Erin Molan! They shared with us stories about their childhood and their lives, and being able to do what they love. Even though some things didn’t go according to plan, they never gave up, believed in themselves and that brought them to where they stand today. They have encouraged us to keep going, even when things get tough, to never doubt ourselves, and to always know that there IS someone who can care and support you at all times. Overall, everyone brought back great memories to share with the rest of the school. Jasmine

My favourite part would have to be when Erin Molan talked about her life story because she told us she got written notes saying she wasn’t good enough or no 98 times yet she kept on and kept on trying until she reached her goal. For me she was the most inspirational. Sienna

Halogen was great! My favourite speaker was Rove McManus because he was very inspirational and because he told us to never give up on our dreams and that no one can tell you what you can and can’t do! Marlee

Halogen was great my favourite speaker was Bianca Chatfield she told us about her story from being just the tall girl to the Australian diamonds netball team captain. Lisa

My favourite part of Halogen was after recess and lunch we DANCED! Tobias

On Monday I went to Halogen with my leadership team. My favourite part was when John Coutis told us about his inspiring life story and always remember to follow what you love and do your personal best! Ivy

My favourite speaker was also Rove McManus. This man does it all from stand-up comedy to even making his own book. He taught us to be confident with everything we do and to go with the flow. Lincoln

On Monday the 2nd of March the leadership team went to Halogen. My favourite speaker was Rove McManus because he was very funny. Beau

On Monday we went to Halogen my favourite bit was when Rove McManus was too short to get back on the stage so Tobias and Lincoln had to help him. Oscar

On the day there was a bunch of inspirational speakers and they told us about their careers and life story’s but the main thing they told us is to never give up. Max

Rove McManus was the most inspirational speaker in my opinion because he told us to never give up on your dreams and keep trying. Alexia

My favourite speaker was Rove McManus because he had a very inspirational speech teaching us that we can do anything if you put your mind to it. Kai

I enjoyed a lot it was a very wonderful and exciting experience. All the speakers had very inspiring speeches and stories on how they became who they are today. The main message they conveyed was to never give up and if you want to do something keep on trying. Alana

I thought Halogen was amazing. There were very inspirational speakers who told us never to give up on our dreams. Amy

Swimming Carnival

The swimming carnival 2020 was a huge success! With 9 records broken by some of our students this year, everyone had a blast! Students participated in a variety of races, ranging from freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, individual medley and almost everything else in between. The event was hosted at Riverstone Swimming Pool this year. We are very fortunate to have students all the way from Year 2 – Year 6 competing in this incredible event! Some students are moving on to the next levels of the competition, and we wish them all the very best of luck. Jasmine J SRC President

Child Safety Awareness

The “NSW Police Legacy Child Safety Handbook” is a comprehensive resource to assist parents, carers as well as teachers on a range of topics essential to child safety.

The handbook has been updated to include key messages about bush fire safety given the unprecedented fires we experienced recently.

The updated online edition (link below) also includes important content updates from: NSW Ministry of Health, NSW Police Force, Fire and Rescue NSW, Rural Fire NSW, Transport for

NSW, Sydney Trains, NSW Department of Family & Community Services, eSafety Commissioner and NSW Office of the Children's Guardian.
