-1- Calendar What’s On Principal’s Message As we wrap up another busy term I would like to thank the school community for all of the support during this busy time of year. As always Term 4 is even busier as we consolidate learning and celebrate the end of the year with transitions into Kindergarten and off to High School. It leaves us all wondering where the year has gone! Returning to School in Term 4 Please note that students and staff return to school on Tuesday 6 October. There is NO staff development day on the first day back. Parking We have had a few reports of the ranger issuing fines in relation to parking around the school. I have contacted council regarding upgrading the parking signage around the school and hopefully this will occur soon. Please ensure in the afternoons that you do not park in the ‘kiss and drop zone’ in the front of the school. Parents are parking there and holding up traffic over the crossing which is really dangerous for the students. Please make an alternate meeting place or park and walk up to meet your child if they are not at the kiss and drop waiting. Silver Day Congratulations to all the students who have achieved a Silver award this year. Students who have reached Silver level and have had 2 or less detentions this year have been invited to attend a special screening of Oddball on Thursday. This screening is for invited students and supervising staff only as we have filled the cinema. It is always a pleasure on behalf of the staff and P&C to be able to reward so many students for learning and behaviour. Congratulations. Regional Athletics Huge congratulations to Toby, Jordan, Loklan and Nicholas who represented Ridges Athletics PSSA last week at the regional carnival. These students represented our school and region beautifully demonstrating a huge effort and exemplary behaviour and sportsmanship. So proud of them. Riverstone Showcase Well done to our band, choir and dance group who performed so well at the 2015 Riverstone High School Showcase. Our groups have been working hard and it was a fabulous opportunity for our students to demonstrate their skills. A big thank you to the teachers who put hours of their own time into supporting students to participate in these special events. Well done students and Miss Smigliani, Mrs Kaur, Mrs Weisback and Mrs Pettitt. Writing in 2C

Once upon a time there was a giant named George the giant. He lived in a castle a long, long time ago. On the weekend he would eat cakes every day, but one day his cake was gone! It had disappeared! He called to his friends to find the cake, but the rabbits had eaten it. Ronan

One day, George the giant was walking his dog, but they were both massive. He didn’t see the village and they stepped on it. The villagers had to fix the village and it was even better than last time! Alisha

George the giant was at home in the afternoon. All of a sud-den a big storm came and blew everything away. To save his house George picked it up until the storm had gone. Lilli

George the giant lived in a cave. On the weekend, he saw his dog Holly and he fed her dog food. He went to the park with Holly and then he saw a lady who couldn’t find her dog anywhere. George looked around and found her dog and gave it back. The lady was very happy and so was George. Vicky

Once upon a time there was a giant named George. He lived in a blue apartment. On Tuesday afternoon, when he got back home from the shops, George went up the stairs and discov-ered half of his apartment was gone! George rang up his friend Bowen the giant. George met Bowen and they started looking for the apartment. After looking, they went back to the apartment and noticed it was magically back. Devika

Issue 15 — Term 3 — Week 10 Wednesday 16 September 2015

It has been an extremely productive and engaging year so far for the students in 4/6B, 4/6R and 1/4AW. Mrs White, Mrs Hearsay, Mrs Robertson, Mrs Ahmed, Mrs Reddy, Mrs Sewell, Mrs Kumar and Mrs Gibbs have all been influential in their design of engaging, appropriate and individualised learning experiences, for all the children in the Support Unit – this is further made possible with the meaningful collaborative partnerships we have with you as parents and carers of your children. The effective use of technology as a learning tool has been a focus in how we facilitate learning across all Key Learning Areas. Here are just a few examples:

Support Unit Supervisor’s Report

by Heather Ale

1/4AW have been using the

iPad to discuss, investigate and design tessellating patterns.

4/6R have been using technology to discuss and explore the concept of perspective, change and

colour by creating artworks reflecting their understandings /of how pictures tell a story.

4/6B have been using technology to design characters for their narrative. They have been using technology to investigate how

characters can be portrayed in digital

Issue 15 — Term 3 — Week 10 Wednesday 16 September 2015

It has been wonderful privilege to be able to see the inspired growth and creativity of your children in preschool and we look forward to many more moments of discovery as the year progresses.

We would like to thank you for your feedback and input regarding our Preschool Philosophy – we will continue to post questions outside where your children sign in about our preschool and the service we provide because YOUR input in your child’s learning is important and highly valued. Your input supports us regarding the learning environments and activities we implement. Mr Wall, Miss Chivers, Miss Sue and Miss Debbie have continued to maintain high standards of planning of learning activities that stimulate understanding of concepts and develop independent confident learners.

It has been a productive, engaging and exciting year so far in preschool. We have discovered living things in our playground environment using magnifying glasses and insect catchers where we have been able to identify and talk about the parts of an insect – the head, thorax and abdomen! While comparing different features of a variety of insects we have found in our preschool playground such as caterpillars, centipedes, ants and different kinds of beetles

In Smarties and Jellybeans, we have been investigating building design and dabbling in engineering as we poured over books about building designs and with our curious minds asked questions like ‘How do you make a tall building like an apartment that goes up,

up, up stick together and not fall?’ A lot of us chose to design buildings using blocks or different kinds of lego and then sketch pictures of them. Some of us chose to draw a building and then build a model. Other children decided to design their own city- where one child went on to explain, ‘This is my city – here is the school, here are the houses, here are the factories for people to work in, parks for everyone to play in and here is a portal so people can leave and move from one world to another’ – WOW – Our children in preschool are imaginative and creative thinkers who at a young age

already demonstrate emerging skills in problem solving, design and engineering – just

Its hard to believe that we are at the end of term 3 already! The year has just flown. The children have had

a fantastic term learning, discovering and investigating the world around them. Both classes have thor-

oughly enjoyed gymnastics and have learnt some extremely valuable skills including spatial awareness,

body positioning and co-ordination. The Smarties have been really interested in construction, which has

lead us to exploring some of the most famous structures in the world. The Jellybeans have developed a

love of music and are looking forward to where they can take this next term.

From all the team here at preschool we wish all our families a safe and happy holiday.

Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners.

Children develop a disposition for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commit-

ment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination and reflexivity.

Issue 15 — Term 3 — Week 10 Wednesday 16 September 2015

Under the Sea by Hayley Sawtell

I created an under the sea artwork using

collage, including real sand. I chose to

add an imaginative aspect to the picture

and put a mermaid in there too. I gave

her a colourful tail.

Galah

By Jermaine Inskip-Spiller

I painted a picture of a galah and used

lots of vibrant colours. I finished the

background of the picture using a blue

wash.

Fragmented Segments By Caleb Kloosterman

I painted a picture using vibrant colours

and divided the artwork using black

lines. We then cut up our picture and

pasted it back together like a jigsaw

leaving spaces between them.

The effect is pretty awesome.

Repeating Sea Creatures by Rachel Glover

I used a stencil to create an outline of a

sea creature and then traced it all over

my paper. I then coloured it in using

lots of different colours to create a really

awesome effect. I finished it off with a

blue watercolour wash for the sea.

Congratulations to the students whose artwork was chosen for display in Operation Art 2015.
