CHLOE MARTIN – Asian Pacific Children’s Convention On Thursday the 10

th of July I left Australia with 5 other kids from Victoria and 2 adults, to represent Australia at

The Asian - Pacific Children’s Convention in Fukuoka, Japan.

I was at the camp with kids from 44 different countries around the Asia and Pacific area for 5 days and then stayed

with a host family for 9 days. At the camp we had heaps of fun and made lots of new friends. Teaching the other kids

to play Aussie Rules Football was one of my favourite activities. It was entertaining to watch the different ways they

thought you play Aussie Rules.

It was great to experience Japanese culture while staying at my host family’s house. I got to see some of the old,

traditional Japan when we went to Kumamoto Castle and some of the funky, modern Japan, riding a Bullet train into

the centre of the city. Playing games with my host family was fun, but teaching them how to play was hard.

School was the same as Australia in lots of ways, but some big differences that I noticed were: the kids only had a

patch of gravel to play on, most schools have their own pool, there are 40 kids in the class, the kids sit at their own

table separated from the others, a hot lunch is prepared for all the students at school and the class monitors serve up

lunch for the class. Although there were some challenges, I had an amazing time and would love to apply to be a

Peace Ambassador and go back when I am older.

YEAR 5/6 HOOPTIME REPORT

On Thursday 24th July all the grade 5s and 6s went to the Knox Basketball Centre to play Hoop Time Basketball. Kent

Park had 19 teams, made up of some who had never played Basketball before and others who were experienced players.

We all had lots of fun playing against other schools.

The All Star Boys team easily won all of their games as well as the grand final against Knox Park.

The All Star Girls team lost twice to Knox Gardens and met them again in the grand final. In the grand final they were

victorious, 11-6.

Thank you to all of the teachers for coaching, the parents for cheering us on and Mr. Johnston for organising the day.

We wish the All Star Boys and Girls team well when they go on to the next round in Term 4.

The Spirit Unleashed In the wintery snow, not a spirit could be heard or seen. Anybody who walked through this particular park felt a bitter cold

feeling, that scared them away before they even spent one minute inside. Then she walked in. She was about 8 years old. A

very young age to come here alone. The snow was frosty, a dull shade of white choking the true colour hiding underneath.

She sat down, unafraid of her demons floating around in the limp air. The happy spirit of this 8 year old girl burst all

around the park and blew all these demons away. The sound of laughter filled the air. A little boy was walking past. Then

he saw the park. It wasn’t just a park. It was an exciting world of happiness right in front of his eyes. The only thing

stopping him was an invisible barrier that was pushing and shoving him away. This was her world. She wasn’t going to let

intruders in. Finally, she was feeling special. A tall tree sprouted out of the ground. It was bareleafed. A man, who had seen

many sights, in a green jacket and mismatched yellow pants appeared. He went up to the girl and said, “This tree will grow

leaves when your fear disappears.” You see, this girl had a fear of her mother. This so-called mother hid her from the world

and took away her ever-so-precious childhood. The girl was terrified but cried out, “I’m not afraid of you.” As she looked

up, the tree grew bright, vibrant leaves. The skinny branches were replaced with big, thick branches. Then she found herself

in bed. “Wow, that was an awesome dream,” she whispered, surprised that it felt so real. But, was it really a dream?

Adjectives Story

It was a freezing cold wet night and the bright, glowing lights were shining on the football oval. It had been raining for

hours so that it made the oval muddy and sloppy. The sparkling lights reflected on to the sloppy, muddy wet puddles.

The game had started and the ball is flying through the air, someone took a magnificent screamer. What a mark!!!!!!

Onion Tears - Reflection Deep inside Nam Houng screams and screeches, cries and wails, reliving the past. But on the outside she is as locked up

as a brick, crying only onion tears she walks along a carpet of misery and sorrow.

Head bowed, feet dragging she walks, until she learns to lift her feet, throw back her head and laugh. Then, tears fall. This

journey would never be made if not for Nam Houng’s carefree teacher, Miss Lily and Chu-Minh, whom she loves like a

brother, who encourage her and make life worth living.

By Isla Kelzke 5B

I heard a bloodcurdling scream coming from upstairs. It was mum! I was running upstairs to see what was wrong. I saw

why she was screaming, she just saw a HUGE spider. It was an explosive spider. Mum stopped screaming and said, ‘That

is a super dangerous spider!’

Then dad comes in with a horrible look on his face and yells, “What was that loud scream?!’

The spider explodes. BOOM!!

Year 5 Writers Of The Week

On a nice sunny day in the middle of summer, Sarah and her buddy Jake went to the local pool. They took two thick,

fluffy white towels, a pair of black goggles for Jake, some biscuits and drinks and some Nerf water guns. Jake and Sarah

had their bathers on underneath their clothes and bright pairs of thongs were on their feet. Jake had yellow and Sarah had

green.

“Are you ready to get wet Jake?” Sarah asked.

“I sure am!” he answers. They enter the pool gates, their noses fill with the smell of chlorine. Jake starts racing off when

he sees the water. “Jake! Come here. No running!” Sarah yells.

But Jake doesn’t listen. He keeps running. He turns to look at Sarah and he falls into the pool! Sarah runs over and takes

off her clothes and jumps into the pool as well! The water was cold and clear. “That was fun!” Jake tells Sarah. I want to

do that again!” Jake climbs out of the pool and bombs into the pool spraying water everywhere. When he pops back

above the water’s surface, he yells, “Oh yeah!”

Sarah and Jake both hop out of the normal pool and head over to the wave pool. “Wow!” Jake says in amazement. Then

they both run in. They spend the next half an hour swimming, diving, running and ducking under the waves until they’re

so tired they can’t do anything else.” Let’s dry off and get something to eat,” Sarah says. “OK,” Jake replies. So they both

dry off and get icy- poles. “Did you have fun Jake?” Sarah asks. “I sure did, I can’t wait to do it again!” Jake answered.

teamberwick Movie Night

Hi Kent Park P.S., my name is Sonya Moutzouris (Miss M from 5D’s sister) and I’m part of #teamberwick. We are a group of 19-21 year old friends, some of whom are cancer survivors, coming together to support and raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. are working hard to raise money to find a cure and would love all the support we can get from Kent Park Primary School.

We would like to invite you to come along to Village Cinemas, Fountain Gate to watch The Hundred Foot Journey (PG) on Monday 11th August 2014 at 7:00 pm. It will be a really enjoyable night and an amazing way to support a

worthwhile cause. If you can’t make the movie, please don’t hesitate to donate through our Light the Night Page (http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/teamberwick) and make sure to leave your name.

Cost: $10 for children

$15 for adults (18+) To secure your tickets please fill in the form below and return to the office with payment by Friday 1st August.
