Theoriginalwastewatertreatmentplantconsistedofa proprietarylow-rateanaerobicADI-BVF reactorandADI-SBR(sequencingbatchreactor)polishingsystem.The existingfull-scaleanaerobicsystem,alow-rateupflow sludgebedreactor,hadworkedwellforseveralyears treating this high-strength wastewater with its high TSS and FOGconcentrations;however,KensFoodswantedto expandproduction,resultingina60percentincreasein wastewater flow and loading. ConvertingtheexistingfacilitytoanAnMBRsystemwas veryattractive,giventheeconomicsandspace-saving advantagesoftheprocess.Inadditiontotheincreased capacity,theAnMBRsystemproducesthehighestquality anaerobiceffluent,withBODremovalsgreaterthan99 percent and virtually free of suspended solids.This allowed the existing SBR to be utilized as a simple sulfide oxidation tankandtheeffluenttobedischargedtothemunicipal sewer, simplifying the overall treatment operation. www.adisystemsinc.com TheinnovativeADI-AnMBRsystemisacompact,high-rate anaerobictreatmentprocessthatutilizessubmerged membranesforbiomassretentionandsolids-liquid separation.The high biomass concentrations maintained in thereactor(s)provideresiliencyagainstshockloadsand changingfeedcharacteristics.TheADI-AnMBRprocess maximizesbiogasproduction,increasessolidsdigestion, andprovidesameanstoeasilyhandleinfluent wastewaterswithhighconcentrationsoforganicmatter; solids;andfat,oil,andgrease(FOG).Itshigh-quality effluentalsosimplifiesthedesignandoperationof downstream processes. KensFoodsAnMBRsystemconsistsofaTypeSADI-BVF reactorandfourAnMBRmembranetanksequippedwith Kubotasubmergedmembranecassettes.Aremovable geomembranecoversystemoneachAnMBRmembrane tankprovidesagastightsealwithbiogascollection capabilities.BiogasproducedatKensFoodsisusedina processboilertoprovideheatfortheanaerobicsystem and hot water for other plant requirements. The system treats a high-strength wastewater with 39,000 mg/lCOD;18,000mg/lBOD5;850mg/lFOG;and12,000 mg/lTSSconcentrations,ataflowrateupto0.14mgd.TheAnMBRproduceseffluentwithCOD,BOD5,andTSS concentrations less than 200, 15, and 1 mg/l, respectively. TheAnMBRexpansionoftheexistingwastewater treatment system began in April 2008, and the new system was fully commissioned in July 2008.
