At Carthage College, we combine an environment of reflection and self-discovery with a culture of high expectation so our students uncover and ignite their true potential. As a four-year, private liberal arts college with roots in the Lutheran tradition, we place a strong emphasis on both moral and intellectual values. Our prime location in Kenosha, midway between Chicago and Milwaukee allows students to learn in a professional context.

A PATH THAT LEADS EVERYWHERE.

That’s the view from here.

We invite the community to experience the beauty of our campus, an 80-acre arboretum on the Lake Michigan shore. Carthage brings renowned performers, artists, and speakers on timely issues to campus for public events. Kids can enjoy the weekly Family Fun Night or attend summer sports camps led by NCAA Division III coaches.

On the coverChris and Jill Ventura enjoy a sunny afternoon with their son Gus on the grounds

of the historic Southport Lighthouse. Celebrating its 150th Anniversary in 2016

and listed on the Wisconsin and National Registers of Historic Places, it’s one of

three lighthouses to have existed on this site and one of two that remain along

Kenosha’s Lake Michigan shore today.

The 55-foot tall Southport Lighthouse was built in 1866 with Milwaukee Cream

City brick and features 72 spiraling steps to the top. A year later in 1867, a

keeper’s house was built for those employed as full time lighthouse keepers.

Originally designated as a coast and harbor light, the station was the first

navigational light a mariner would see upon entering Wisconsin from Chicago. At

the turn of the century, the Hill Steamboat Company dominated activity in the

harbor, transporting passengers and freight for local manufacturers such as Nash

Motors, American Brass and Simmons Company.

Today, the preserved Southport Lighthouse and keeper’s house are open seasonally

for tours. Guests can climb the lighthouse and experience breathtaking views over

Lake Michigan and Kenosha’s shoreline. The two-story keeper’s house has been

restored and now serves as the Southport Light Station Museum. It features

artifacts and exhibits on Kenosha’s lighthouses and keepers, its shipping and

commercial fishing past, local shipwrecks, and more maritime history. See Page 20

Located along the shores of Lake Michigan, THE CITY OF KENOSHA is right in the middle of opportunity,

offering small town charm and a lakefront lifestyle, yet close to big city assets in Milwaukee and Chicago — both less than an hour away.

Miles of beaches and lakefront parks offer opportunities for picnics, kite flying or just watching the waves. Book a charter fishing excursion and hook your own fresh catch of the day. The warmer months in Kenosha are filled with outdoor concerts, festivals, art fairs and historic re-enactments. Vintage car shows pay homage to the city’s pivotal role in the U.S. auto industry.

With numerous unique cultural amenities, Kenosha celebrates the arts, entertainment, history, heritage and education. The public museum system is among its jewels. The Kenosha Public Museum hosts a rotating display of artwork and a permanent exhibit featuring the mammoths excavated in Kenosha County. The Civil War Museum takes visitors back in time to the social politics and economic influences that contributed to the Civil War. The Dinosaur Discovery Museum is only a short ride away on the city’s electric streetcar system. Dramatic life-size dinosaur replica casts make up the largest collection of meat-eating dinosaurs.

I welcome you to our community and invite you to explore Kenosha during your visit. We have much to offer in recreation, the arts, commerce, education and more. Even if you’re a first-time visitor, you will soon feel right at home.

THE VILLAGE OF BRISTOL has a unique, natural atmosphere setting it apart from other Wisconsin communities. Experience our beautiful lakes, rolling farmlands and welcoming communities, which have retained the charm of an earlier era. An ideal location for you and your family, you’ll enjoy a small town feel with urban conveniences in nearby

Kenosha, Milwaukee and Chicago. Bristol also boasts its own commercial district on the west side of I-94 as well as a centrally located 70-acre business park that creates the synergy.

Savor the fruits of our local farmers’ labor at the new WestoshaMarket, Wednesdays July 6 through Sept. 28 from 2:30-6:30 p.m. Don’t miss our monthly Antique Car Shows on select Monday nights during the summer. Get back to nature at the 189-acre Bristol Woods Park, featuring over four miles of scenic hiking trails and free programs at Pringle Nature Center. Be sure to visit the area’s unique antique shops as well!

Be transported to another time and place at the Bristol Renaissance Faire. This enchanting festival offers you a unique chance to step back 400 years in time and walk straight into the streets of a 29-acre 16th Century Elizabethan village.

Bristol is also horse country. Increasingly known as one of the region’s most popular equestrian communities, Bristol is home to many horse farms competition facilities, and equestrian disciplines. A relaxing country drive reveals stunning horse farms and lovely equestrian estates. Riders from all over the region come to Bristol to participate in horse sports, or just “horse around.”

The Village of Bristol ... the ideal place to live and visit ... naturally!

... and Town

Organized in 1842, THE TOWN OF WHEATLAND, located on the western end of Kenosha County is 24 square miles in size and includes the unincorporated communities of New Munster, Slades Corners, Wheatland, Powers Lake and Lily Lake and many smaller subdivisions. Our area’s two lakes, Lily Lake and Powers Lake,

offer swimming, boating and fishing opportunities. The scenic Fox River is a landmark in our community, traveling in a north-south direction through the eastern part of the town. Wheatland is also home to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources New Munster Wildlife Area, which encompasses 1,226 acres and permits seasonal hunting. Camp Oh-Da-Ko-Ta, owned by the Boy Scouts of America, and located on the western edge of the town, has enabled several generations of Boy Scouts to participate in camping and outdoor activities. The Seno Woodland Education Center, a 131-acre forestry learning center also located in the western part of the town, is dedicated to forestry education and research. Owned and managed by the WWOA Foundation, Inc., there are many nature programs offered. Our farming community is gradually evolving into a residential community. We welcome visitors and new residents!

Celebrating Our 76th Year of

Musical Excellencewww.kenoshasymphony.org

Page 23: Kenosha Area Visitors Guide 2016

If you’re looking to add a dose of culture to your vacation, the Kenosha Area delivers beautifully. Its burgeoning arts scene is evident everywhere you turn and no matter the art form, you’re sure to find something to appreciate here. Galleries and arts centers showcase local, regional and national artists’ work in permanent and visiting exhibits. Local theater troupes entertain and inspire from historic and intimate stages. Live music of all genres flows from concert halls, local clubs and outdoor festival places. Even a walk along Kenosha’s Lake Michigan harbor becomes an artful experience with dozens of sculptures, monuments and other examples of public art. Downtown Kenosha features a number of distinctive wall murals, unique hand-painted storefront signs, and amazing historic architecture inside and out. You can even tap into your own inner artist with hands-on art classes at galleries and museums, make or paint your own creations at local pottery studios, or step into the spotlight at an open mic night or acting class. Just like creativity, the possibilities are endless for enjoying the arts in the Kenosha Area. See pages 20-21 for a list of local arts venues, and go to VisitKenosha.com/Events for a complete list of arts and cultural events throughout the year.

Lake Michigan AdventureIf you’re looking for a Great Lakes adventure, a charter fishing excursion on Lake Michigan is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon on the water. With the highest catch-per-hour rate in Wisconsin, you’re bound to have some great fish stories to tell! All fishing equipment is provided for you from rods to bait, and the captains are ready to help with baiting your line, reeling in your catch and even cleaning and filleting your fish. If you have your own boat, Kenosha has two full service marinas, plus a wonderful public launch site on Simmons Island, complete with a fish cleaning station.

Calmer WatersIf smaller waters are more your style, large mouth, small mouth, crappie, trout, muskie, northern, and many pan-fish can be found in Kenosha County’s inland lakes. Fishing piers and shore fishing are available at these locations, and small boats are allowed in most. Bundle up and try your luck at ice fishing in the winter months for a new adventure!

Fishing LicensesIf you want to give fishing a try, you can purchase a single-day Wisconsin fishing license. You can upgrade your single-day pass to an annual fishing license at a reduced cost, too! Wisconsin Fishing Licenses are available online at dnr.wi.gov or at these Kenosha County locations:

DiningIf there is one thing you should know about the Kenosha Area, it is that good food is easy to find! If taking a culinary adventure around the world is what you crave, you’ll find everything from the best sushi restaurant in southeastern Wisconsin to not-so-traditional Mexican fare. Kenosha’s Italian heritage is evident when you visit family owned and operated favorites and our region’s German roots shine through in menus, too. It just wouldn’t be a trip to Wisconsin without an order of fried cheese curds or a visit to a traditional supper club — complete with Brandy Old Fashioned cocktails, of course. From gastro pub delights to twisted creations, we can promise you won’t go home hungry.
