SUMMER VISITOR’S GUIDE 2011 5visitvalemount.ca

Valemount—a friendly stop on Yellowhead Highway 5—offers a surprising variety of hotels and restaurants in a typical rural and mountain community setting. Valemount is surrounded by the Rockies, the Cariboo and Monashee Mountains.

Valemount is your gateway to many natural wonders. Mount Robson Provincial Park, a 20-minute drive from the Village, is home for grizzlies, moose and elk. In August, you can experience the phenomenal chinook salmon spawning at George Hicks Regional Park. Enjoy the wide-open mountain views along the dykes of the Starratt Wildlife Sanctuary—a few kilometres south of the village—and observe the local and migratory wildlife. The sanctuary is home for beaver, otter, moose, deer and over 90 species of birds.

There is an adventure around every corner and off the beaten path. Ride your ATV on Canoe Mountain, fish in Kinbasket Lake, or join some whitewater rafting tours on the Fraser. In the winter, Valemount is the home of the best Alpine snowmobiling, and the base for the finest snowcat-skiing, backcountry skiing, and dog-sledding.

Whether you prefer to hike, paddle, float, or ride your ATV, you certainly will experience the beauty of Valemount’s natural wonders.

VALEMOUNT MUSEUMThe museum was originally built in 1914 as the Swift

Creek Station. The train station was moved in 1927 and served as the train station and station agents home until 1987.Visit the museum for a guided tour and enjoy a

walk back in time. The Railroad Room has a model train running through the textual displays, artifacts and, yes, even through the bathroom. One of the museum’s most popular exhibits showcases the life of a trapper and some of his catches and tools. Local artist Margaret McKirdy’s “Little People” is a collection of life-like sculptures of local personalities and culture made with local clay. Visitors to the museum can also find stories about the Japanese internment camps, the history of the Valemount schools, logging, farming and lots more. Admission: Family $8, Adults $5 and Children $3

REARGUARD FALLS PROVINCIAL PARKRearguard Falls is just east of Valemount

on Highway 16 toward Jasper. A short trail leads visitors to viewing platforms that provide stunning views of the waterfalls. During the fall, visitors can watch the final return of the Chinook salmon on the final leg of their 7-year journey. An easy fifteen-minute hike is all that is required of visitors to enjoy this amazing view which is well worth the effort.

GEORGE HICKS’ REGIONAL PARKGeorge Hicks’ Regional Park is

2.5 hectares in size and is located across the Highway from Valemount, along Swift Creek, adjacent to the Visitor’s Centre.

The Park has a small trail and lookout platform that provides excellent salmon viewing opportunities in late July to mid August. The Chinook salmon come from the Pacific Ocean, up the Fraser River and then enter Swift Creek to spawn.

Facilities at George Hicks’ include RV parking, an information kiosk, picnic tables, toilets and a viewing platform.

STARRATT WILDLIFE SANCTUARYKnown locally as the Cranberry

Marsh, located south of the Village of Valemount, the Robert W. Starratt Wildlife Sanctuary is an ecological gem.

Surrounded by the Monashee Mountains to the south, the Cariboo Mountains to the west, and the Rocky Mountains

to the east, Cranberry Marsh is a provincially important waterfowl resting and nesting area, making it one of the finest and most unique bird watching areas in the province.

The major portion of this marsh complex was donated by the Starratt family in memory of Robert Starratt.

A trail system, complete with two viewing towers, provides visitors with excellent opportunities to view a wide variety of the areas flora, fauna and mountain landscapes.

The marsh is one of the very best locations to see birds not commonly seen in other locations. The beautiful Yellow-Headed Blackbird, the elusive Sora and the graceful Northern Harrier can all be seen and heard. The trail system follows the water control dykes and transitions into a Lodgepole Pine dominated forest.

Visitors in wheelchairs can easily access the marsh from the parking area on Highway 5, adjacent to the Best Western Hotel. If you’re a serious ‘birder’ or just enjoy wildlife viewing in a natural setting, the Cranberry Marsh can provide a memorable experience that will lift your spirit and lighten your heart.

SUMMER VISITOR’S GUIDE 20118 visitvalemount.ca

Some visitors to Valemount and area might be content to enjoy our spectacular scenery in casual or relative comfort, however there are those few with daring hearts who are going to want to get right up into the face of danger and with adrenaline coursing through their veins hurl themselves down the throat of adventure.

RIVER RAFTING TOURSYou, your friends and family are bouncing along the swift current

of the famous Frazer River, ahead of you is churning, spitting and boiling “big water.” Its angry, unforgiving and you are headed right for it. “What was I thinking?” you wonder as the boat is dragged toward it. You and those with you can’t help but scream as cold

water sprays about you and the boat pitches into the fray. “Dig! Dig!” you hear someone say and you help paddle out of the “hole” and into safer current but not before a “haystack” drenches you and your companions. Adrenaline, exercise, spectacular views and risk taking adventure; what are you waiting for? Valemount is your destination.

HELICOPTER TOURSBlades thunder above you. Secured in your seat you peer out the window to watch

in awe as the valley floor drops away and you rise up into the sky. Soon your skilled pilot has you soaring above the trees and the rugged crags and bluffs of our glacier wrought mountain peaks. Your heart leaps in your chest at the sight of Mount Robson, your destination and highest point in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The massive form dwarfs all peaks around it and all you can say is “Wow!”

From Valemount, the safe and well maintained helicopters of Robson Valley Helimagic can take you on a sightseeing tour of our majestic valley and surrounding peaks or for the more adventurous get dropped off on the summit of Mt. Robson and take the memorable and breathtaking trail back to the valley floor. An experience you will never forget awaits you in Valemount.

forestry roads. You break past the timberline and your eyes feast upon a breathtaking view of rugged peaks towering into bright blue skies and below the valley is stretched out to the horizon; million dollar views accessible only to you and the few visitors willing to hike for hours. The ATV has given people one more way to enjoy the spectacular vistas that is the signature feature of Valemount.

ATVs in our valley are strictly regulated for use and in

British Columbia. We want to preserve our beautiful natural environment so we highly recommend that your ATV adventure begins with a visit to the Valemount Area Recreation Development Association (VARDA) office. VARDA has maps and plenty of advice on where and when to go. The VARDA office is located on Cranberry Lake Road right next to our Visitor’s Centre. You can also visit the VARDA website at: www.valemountrecdevelopment.com

Don’t have an ATV? There is no better place to start

than at Alpine Country Rentals. Rent a machine, get some safety tips and if you are with a group, go on an expedition. Experience the world at over 3,000 meters above sea level to reveal summits and vistas few will ever see in their lifetime. Looking for an ATV adventure, Valemount has what you need.

VALEMOUNT PINES GOLF COURSE

Built in a forested area by eager volunteers in 1995, the Valemount Pines Golf Course was designed by Gordon McKay and is a high quality, family-oriented facility that offers quality golf, friendly service and reasonable prices. While easy to play for beginners this 9-hole facility offers a challenge to golfers with low handicaps. Its most challenging hole, Hole #5, is a doglegged par 5 with heavily forested areas and sand traps on both sides of the fairway and a pond behind the stepped green.

Valemount Pines Golf Course has received rave reviews from visiting golfers. SCOREGolf.com gave the facility an 8.0, which makes it among the top courses in the province. With spectacular views in every direction, this course is a necessary stop for golfers travelling through our beautiful valley.

Arriving in Valemount, visitors will find one of our most distinctive features, the scenery. Looking in every direction, towering peaks look back at you. This breathtaking scenery can be enjoyed in many different ways. Probably the simplest and cheapest is hiking our easily accessible groomed trails. The following trails will provide an outstanding way to enjoy the outdoors and give visitors the opportunity to enjoy the fresh mountain air. “Let the mountains move you.”

Little Lost LakeThis 3 Kilometre 2 hour hike follows an old forest fire access

road that was built in the early 1960’s. The trail winds its way up from Highway 16 through spruce, aspen, birch and Douglas fir trees. Following the trail, hikers will arrive at a small lake where they can enjoy the picnic area. Follow the loop trail which will take them on a tour around the lake through the dense undergrowth thriving along an avalanche slope and enjoy the view of a waterfall above the lake. Another trail branches away to take hikers up a very steep trail where one can enjoy breathtaking views of the Robson Valley.

To enjoy this hike simply travel north from Valemount on Highway 5, take Highway 16 east towards Jasper for just 1.5 kilometres and park at the avalanche gate east of the weigh scales. The trailhead is marked with a sign, “Little Lost Lake” about 100 meters toward the weight scales.

Tete Jaune spawning groundsWhile the salmon spawn here in late July and early August,

this very easy twenty to thirty-minute hike can be enjoyed spring through fall. The trail follows the McLennan River through the forest to the mighty Fraser River. Lots of interesting terrain awaits the adventurous explorer or stay on the trail and enjoy a short pleasant walk along the river.

To enjoy the hike one need only travel north from

Page 13: 2011 Valemount and Area Summer Visitors Guide

SUMMER VISITOR’S GUIDE 2011 13visitvalemount.ca

Valemount along Highway 5 and turn left onto Blackman Road. Follow Blackman Road to Old Tete Jaune Road and turn left again. Follow Old Tete Jaune Road to just past the first railway crossing where a sign will mark the entrance to the “Spawning Grounds Recreation Site.”

Swift Creek TrailThis 10 Kilometre trail treats hikers to stunning views of the

Village of Valemount and the surrounding mountains. Hikers will enjoy an invigorating climb, a bridge crossing and explorations of our forest above the valley floor. To find this hidden hiking treasure, turn off Highway 5 into Valemount, following 5th Avenue until the railway crossing and turn left onto Main Street. Follow Main Street for 1 kilometre until you come to a bridge over Swift Creek. The trailhead is to the right at the bridge.

Cranberry MarshTwo hours of easy, flat trail await the adventurous

hiker seeking amazing panoramic views of the mountains from the valley floor. Observe local bird life or explore the ruins of an early 20th Century homestead; there is something for everyone. Two wildlife-viewing towers give hikers an unprecedented view of the marsh and the wildlife below. The loop trail, which is bridged in many places with boardwalks, passes over a dyke built in 1983 as part of a Ducks Unlimited project to enhance waterfowl habitat in the marsh. The trail also travels through a wetland forest where the ruins of an old farmstead destroyed by fire can be explored. Many interpretive signs offer interesting information on life in the marsh. Bird watchers will find a plethora of species to enjoy and hikers will enjoy the easy but lengthy walk through various and interesting terrains. Hikers wishing to access this trail system should take Highway 5 to the Best Western Hotel and look for the clearly marked trailhead and interpretive signs.

McKirdy MeadowsWith 2,500’ elevation gain, this 3 kilometre trail leads

hikers above the timberline to an unparalleled spectacular view of surrounding mountain ranges as well as Mount Robson. From McKirdy Meadow hikers can wander and explore to their hearts content. After reaching the first alpine meadow there is a sign and trail leading toward the YORA Swift Creek Alpine Cabin. Use of the cabin requires registration and a small fee, if interested, contact 250 566 8244. The alpine meadow can be reached in 2 hours but hikers will want to spend the day exploring and sightseeing. To get to the trailhead, follow 5th Avenue east and turn right after the rail road tracks onto Main Street and follow until you see the sign for “Swift Mountain Forestry Road.” Take this forestry road past the TV towers for as far as it goes. The road is steep so a 4-wheel drive is recommended. At the top of the road the trailhead will lead off to the left.

Riding a horse through the majestic mountains, along babbling creeks, and across valley bottoms covered with wildflowers is a dream many people harbour.

See the valley from high upon a ridge or explore one of the area’s many side valleys. Take in the spectacular scenery, breathe in the aromatic scent of evergreen trees. You may even get to see some of our abundant wildlife.

You can bring your own horse or take a guided horseback trip. Whether you’re an experienced rider or have never been on a horse, well trained, surefooted mountain horses suitable for riders of all ages and levels of experience await you. Qualified and experienced local outfitters provide trail rides and pack trips, offering everything from one-hour rides to half-day and full-day rides and even several days on the trail high into the alpine, taking you back to a simpler time.

Accommodations on backcountry pack trips range from rustic tent camps to beautiful log cabins. Hearty, home-cooked meals are prepared over open campfires. After a long day in the saddle, cuddle up in your bedroll by the glow of the fire, below the star-filled sky. At the dawn’s early light you rise from your tent and start your fire using the embers of the previous night. Soon fresh coffee is percolating. You look up and gasp. The sun’s rays have struck the tallest peaks, illuminating them in bright orange light. Coffee in hand you settle into your camp chair to watch the drama that is a Valemount morning as you breath serenity into your soul.

A meal cooked over a crackling fire, a sky filled with stars, moonlit peaks, cozy intimate accommodations; since the dawn of time people have found kinship and comfort from the embrace of the natural world. What we call camping is what our ancestors called “home” for millennia. Perhaps that is why some of us find such solace in erecting a tent, rolling out a sleeping bag and enjoying those meals that seem to taste best when prepared over an open flame. Whether you are pulling a trailer, driving an RV or looking for a basic tent site, roughing it in Valemount is an experience you will not soon forget.

About Mount Robson Provincial Park

The key features of the park are its namesake mountain, and the headwaters of the Fraser River. At 3,954 metres or 12,972 feet, Mount Robson is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. The earliest inhabitants in the area recognized that the mountain was special. The Texqakallt First Nation called the mountain “Yuh-hai-has-hun” meaning “the mountain of the spiral road”. This name was in reference to the horizontal strata that could be seen from the mountain’s south side.

It’s not entirely clear how the mountain got its name. Some suggest the mountain was named after Colin Robertson, a Hudson’s Bay Company factor who sent Iroquois fur hunters into the area in 1920. Others say it was named after John Robson, Premier of British Columbia from 1889 to 1892. As early as 1863 it was known as “Robson’s Peak.” One thing is clear: Mount Robson is truly one of the most impressive sights in the Rocky Mountains.

The headwaters of the Fraser River are entirely contained and protected within Mount Robson Provincial Park. One of the world’s great rivers, the Fraser River provided food and transportation to the areas earliest inhabitants. Today, the river is recognized as one of the premier salmon producers in the world. The upper portion of the Fraser River is seldom visited by humans. Remote and wild, the headwaters of the Fraser River are as free flowing and pure now as they were a thousand years ago.

If it’s high quality outdoor recreation you’re looking for, Mount Robson Provincial Park should be on your “must visit” list. Three vehicle-accessible campgrounds are located adjacent to Highway 16. At the park’s west end, the Robson Meadows and Robson Rivers campgrounds offer a wide range of services from flush toilets, hot showers and a children’s playground to interpretive trails and walks. At the park’s east end, the Lucerne Campground offers a more rustic camping experience beside Lucerne Lake. Day hikes that lead to thundering waterfalls, cultural heritage displays and scenic viewpoints are located throughout the park.

There are over 200 kilometres of trails in the park. The most popular and spectacular is the world famous Berg Lake Trail. With over 90 campsites spread over seven campgrounds this trail has it all. From the trail’s start in a lush low elevation cedar hemlock forest to alpine tundra, the Berg Lake Trail has something for everyone. The “Valley of a Thousand Falls” on the Berg Lake Trail is well named. During the spring and into the summer season, waterfalls are everywhere. There is no finer hiking experience than to stand at the base of Emperor Falls on a hot summer day and feel the cool mist.

We hope you have a safe and memorable visit to Mount Robson Provincial Park and the Robson Valley.

Magnificent scenery, friendly people and lots to see and do – McBride is an essential stop on your route through the Robson Valley. Beside the Fraser River in the valley between the Rockies and the Cariboo Mountains and bracketed by the railway and Highway 16, McBride’s railway origins and rich heritage are reflected in the railway theme throughout the village. With a walk down Main Street to or from the

heritage train station, visitors will enjoy McBride’s pride in developing a railway theme to reflect the community’s importance in the Grand Trunk Railway history. The restored station now houses a gallery featuring the works of local artists, craftspeople, filmmakers and writers. It also contains a bistro/internet cafe and the McBride Visitor Centre to help you find out more about the valley and its attractions. In summer, community markets are held on Friday

afternoons in McBride, and on Saturday mornings in Dunster, a farming community 20 minutes east of McBride.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIESThe McBride area provides many opportunities to

enjoy the outdoors in all seasons. Hiking or trail riding can be a day trip, or a multi-day trek. Canoeing or rafting on the Fraser River, mountain biking or driving up some of the side valleys are great ways to see the magnificent scenery and wildlife. In spawning season, salmon are easily spotted jumping at the Holmes River Falls. Guided hiking, rafting and heli-hiking tours operate

in the Valley.

ANCIENT CEDAR FOREST Huge cedar trees, many thought to be up to 1000

years old have been discovered in the Robson Valley near Dome Creek. The forest itself has been largely undisturbed for thousands of years and may have had its beginnings at the end of the last ice age. This 20 hectare patch of pristine old growth, with walking trails through out, is part of the only Inland Temperate Rainforest in the world. Many of the cedar trees are greater than 10 feet in diameter and this ancient forest is an experience not to be missed.McBride is a full service community with all

the amenities and services you need. For more information about McBride and the various services and activities, visit 2mcbride.ca email [email protected], or phone 1-866-569-3366.

Blue River’s pristine setting makes it a picture perfect locale for hard and soft recreational explorers. Discover unlimited glacier-fed lakes, rivers and streams. Explore trails that dare you to come and experience the possibilities. Witness amazing wilderness and wildlife. In the eclectic community of Blue River, your spirit for adventure will not be disappointed!

Blue River is located in the section of the Columbia Mountain System called the North Thompson River Valley. The valley consists of the Monashee Mountains on the east and the Cariboo Mountains on the west. Valleys and creeks near Blue River divide the two mountain ranges. The community is situated at an elevation of 681 meters above sea level. Located in a temperate inland rainforest, there is an amazing variety of flora to be discovered, including large stands of old growth Douglas fir and a black spruce bog.

Blue River is midway between Jasper and Kamloops, or Vancouver and Edmonton. For this very reason “taking a break by Eleanor Lake” is common with regular travellers of Highway 5. The lake is located in the centre of town, just a two minute drive off the highway. It offers great swimming, diving rafts, a sandy beach, a playground and picnic area to regenerate the weary traveller.

The trails and old roads that are terrific for hiking and mountain biking, start right from town and are the result of early prospectors and loggers accessing natural resources (check out Norco Blue River Ride at www.pinkbike.com for a real thrill). They also ensure access to lakes and rivers for canoeing, fishing, gold panning and just exploring. Blue River provides the only road access to Murtle Lake in Wells Gray Provincial Park, the largest non-motorized lake in North America. It is a destination for true paddlers from all over the world. Mountain bikes, canoes, carts, area maps, camping and fishing gear are available from Blue River Campground & RV Park at www.bluerivercampground.ca. Canoe rentals can also be arranged through www.murtlecanoes.com.

It truly is one amazing hour of scenery, waterfalls and more often than not wildlife – bears, moose, eagles and others. A snack bar is available where you can relax on the floating dock beside the river before or after your tour.

Need to push your adventure level up a notch, then arrange to take a helicopter ride from Mike Weigele’s Heli Village Resort (www.wiegele.com) and bike, hike, picnic, fish or do a glacier skiing day in a real backcountry setting. Snowy Mountain Alpine Tours (www.snowymountain.ca) offer guided and catered single and multi-day hiking tours and mountain skills courses in the Cariboo Mountains of Blue River.

Restaurants, motels, grocery stores and service stations cater to highway travellers and outdoor enthusiasts. Tony’s Grill, The Husky and the Saddle Mountain restaurants all provide varied and satisfying menus. The Log Inn Pub in Avola is a burger experience one should not miss. Summer accommodations in Blue River include Blue River Motel, Bone Creek Wilderness Retreat, Glacier Mountain Lodge, Saddle Mountain Lodge, Mike Weigele’s Heli Village Resort, Holy Smoke Inn B&B and Blue River Campground & RV Park.

Whether your interest is outdoor pursuits, relaxing around a campfire, hanging out at the beach, or picking wild blueberries in August; Blue River has a wilderness experience that is tailored for you! Check out www.blueriverbc.ca for further information.
