Makers say they are harmless but researchers warn of the hazardous metals and chemicals They are not regulated by the FDA, and Washington Poison Control Center has had an increase of 51% calls reporting overdoses. 1 tsp. of liquid nicotine could kill a child. These devices can cause diminished lung function, airway resistance and inflamma-tion. They may also harm arteries which can lead to heart disease. They contain Diethylene glycol – a toxic solvent used in antifreeze, brake fluid and plastic. They contacin Diacetyl 2,3 Butanedine used to make microwave popcorn, approved for eating not inhaling. Can cause inflammation in airways or popcorn lung disease. They contain 2-3 pen-tanedione , a harmful chemical know to alter brain genes in lab rats. It has Formaldehyde a toxic carcinogen chemical used to preserve the dead, and it has Acrolein in it. A toxic herbicide that kills weeds, and also found in auto ex-haust. It has been known to cause ulcers and bleeding in animals. How can the makers say it’s harmless? The science won’t be in for another 5-10 yrs exactly how harmful these devices are.

Attendance Matters!
Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten
and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families
play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attend-
ance is so important for success in school and on the job.
These students had perfect attendance in November

In the Science World…...
6th Grade science has had some exciting times lately. We have had visitors and done several labs that
have created enthusiasm for science thus inspiring quality work from our 6th graders. During November
we had Dr. Todd visit from PLU to discuss her work as a geoscientist in Antarctica. Students were able
to study rocks from Antarctica and learn about what it is like to live there. We have also launched into
several investigations of how particles behave in solids, liquids, and gasses. In addition we have done
labs that demonstrate expansion and compression. One lab in particular, called the rocket lab, harness-
es expansion in a particularly engaging way. Going forward 6th grade science will continue our work
with particles onto kinetic energy and how energy contributes to changing matter’s phase.
In case of an emergency or bad weather, school might be delayed or canceled.
If the regular school schedule is changed, local radio and television stations will be notified.
Emergencies may include inclement weather, power outages or
a need to alter an individual school schedule.
______________________
