Rabbi’s MessageWhat we can learn from building a Sukkah

One of the exciting aspects of our new educational program, Jewish Learning Experience, is projects that the entire school works on together. This approach, known as Project-Based Learning (PBL), has been gaining in popularity in the education world. I can see why.

One of the lessons I’ve learned working with our

our environment. At the end of the holiday, we pray for the rain that we all need to enjoy food throughout the year. This is amplified in the symbolism of the lulav and etrog, and the na’nu’im, the particular way of shaking them in all directions.

It’s intriguing – with the experience of building our own sukkah being so intense and so fruitful – thatOne of the lessons I ve learned working with our

educational consultant Susan Ticker and our First Hebrew team – Michael Kagan, Daniela Rosen and Steve Lefland – is that learning is not only about knowing, about ‘information’ transmitted. It is also about the impact on the life of each learner – affecting what they do, what they believe, and whether they feel connected, having a sense of

own sukkah being so intense and so fruitful that there is no brakhah(blessing) for this action. The blessing for the sukkah we say each time we eat in it. It is “…leisheiv basukkah,” to “live” in the sukkah. Why no blessing for act of building? I think there are two reasons. The fist: the main usage of the sukkah is in the “living in it”. The building is just the first step. But I believe there’s another reason as well. There is e e ey ee co ec ed, a g a se se o

belonging to the Jewish people.

Working together on a project is a great way for students – at any age – to feel connected, to actually create something of value, and to explore what and how they believe about Jewish life. Another benefit of working together on a project is learning from a master teacher and builder Our own Mark Stern is

u be e e e e s a o e easo as e e e sa joy and reward that is its own fulfillment in the act of creating something together. That experience of cooperative construction is its own blessing. No other blessing is needed.

Please come and see the special creation of our own Jewish Learning Experience sukkah that our students have created with Mark We’ll begin ourmaster teacher and builder. Our own Mark Stern is

both of those. In his hands, our children learn how to create something new, how to plan, and how to realize that plan in the real world.

The lessons keep coming. Our children also learn that Judaism is deeply involved in the entire range of our experience. It’s not just an “indoor”

students have created with Mark. We ll begin our Sukkah Hop there on Sunday, Oct. 12 at noon. And if you have the opportunity, listen to them talk about the experience itself. Ask them what they learned. Ask them if they’d do it again! Maybe there’s a building project in your future too!

Hag sameah! I wish you and your loved ones a phenomenon. Judaism – and especially Sukkot – is all about going outdoors, even at the season when people are getting ready to go inside for the winter. Building our sukkah underscores the importance of

wonderful Sukkot holiday.

of practical benefit, and also symbolic of the evolution, the rebirth, of First Hebrew for decades to come. We are excited about what we have achieved in the last 120 or so years, and are even more excited about where we are going.

For example, families will be harvesting vegetables from the Garden of Hope in Yorktown for distribution tofrom the Garden of Hope in Yorktown for distribution to needy families through local food pantries. Caring for the environment will be encouraged through first-hand farming at Eden Village Camp in Putnam Valley. Such Family Experiences expose each generation to social action opportunities and leadership training. This type of personal and shared discovery has been shown to reinforce Jewish identity, and inspire Jewish living.

“They learn by doing, by reflecting on what they’ve done and what they find personally meaningful,” said First Hebrew Rabbi Lee Paskind, who also serves as Principal. “They discover how it fits into their lives.”

As a commitment to families and the importance of a Jewish education, First Hebrew’s JLE is tuition-free for the first two grades, ages five and six, and temple membership is not required The program remains freemembership is not required. The program remains free for temple members. Only a nominal book fee applies to all.

Children will continue to learn Hebrew at age-appropriate levels, study Jewish texts from the “Torah,” i.e., the Five Books of Moses, and learn about Jewish holidays. With project-based learning, students will take the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom and apply them to real world decision-making and problem-solving. Starting in September, for instance, students will design and build a “sukkah,” or booth, to celebrate the fall harvest known as Sukkot, where tradition calls for meals to be taken outdoors in a temporary walled structure.
