Rabbi’s Message

Bingo

BINGO: Why are we asking you to donate your time to helping out with Bingo? It generates approximately $25,000 in revenue per year to our operation of the synagogue. The time commitment is only about three hours on a Wednesday night. We now start Bingo at 6:30 pm so you and our customers can get home earlier. If you are opposed to fulfilling your obligation as a member, then pay the $400 Bingo assessment immediately and let Lisa know to take you off the Bingo list. As a member in good standing it is your obligation to participate in this fundraising activity. If the congregation chooses not to continue providing Bingo to the community and forfeiting the OPM (other people’s money), then the congregation will need to be assessed accordingly to raise the $20,000, or determine what services will be cut. Do your part of fundraising and show up for your assigned Bingo night. Bring a book or magazine to read (there is time when you are waiting). If you come late, it is still better than not coming at all. Or, if you choose, send the $400.

Dear First Hebrew friends,

As I write to you for the last time as your rabbi, my thoughts are filled with projects, classes, B’ne Mitzvah, and many special programs that we have worked on together over these past seven years. I have enjoyed working with so many of you. I have benefitted from your wisdom and kindness over those years. I hope I have shared a little of mine as well.

First Hebrew has a long and proud history. I am proud to have been a part of it. You are lucky to have as a new spiritual leader Rabbi Dana Bogatz. I wish you and her well as you begin a new chapter of First Hebrew’s story.

We have spent a great deal of effort on re-inventing our educational program for our children this year. The Jewish Learning Experience has an exciting new program, thanks to a dedicated group that worked on its revision. I thank those of you with whom I was privileged to do this work. I hope it will grow and flourish.

First Hebrew has benefitted from our partnership for the last several years with PAPA, the Peekskill Area Pastors Association. Especially on our Holocaust Commemoration service we have made strides to bring many members of the community to our annual observance. Our connection to the Garden of Hope has also provided an important link for us to the community.

While it is difficult to say good-bye, or even L’hitarot – Till we meet again – I know that I leave First Hebrew in strong rabbinic hands. I wish Rabbi Dana much luck as she begins her tenure as your rabbi. Please be good to her. I hope you will appreciate her.

I close with thanks from Judy and myself for the kindnesses you have shown us, and with my best wishes for all that First Hebrew can become in the years ahead.

President’s MessageWith much gratitude for his service to our

congregation, I’d like to express my appreciation to immediate past-president Marc Intrilligator. Thank you Marc for your work for FHC over the last two years. Thanks also to the FHC Board of Trustees and to all of the volunteers who enrich our community and enable us to fulfill our mission.

I would also like to congratulate Rabbi Paskind on his retirement from FHC and thank him on behalf of our community. We all wish Rabbi Lee, Judy and their family good health and lots of Mazal for many years to come. Yasher Koach.

In the coming months, I will be reaching out to all FHC members to ask for their feedback and to share my vision for outreach to the broader Jewish community in our corner of the world. According to a 2013 Pew Research Center Study, only 31% of American Jews belong to synagogues, this is down 15% from a 2001 study by a different organization which

pegged synagogue membership at 46%. Suffice it to say that there are many

unaffiliated Jews around us and it is incumbent upon us to reach out to them and to help them feel comfortable engaging with us on any level they choose to. Some will want to join as full participants in all we have to offer but some will just want a connection – and that’s okay.

We have to be willing to have a big tent and to invite Jews who are unaffiliated a way in to our community. When you see new faces at FHC (or previously seen faces where you don’t know the attached name) please introduce yourself and affirmatively welcome them. My goal is to establish FHC as the most welcoming and inclusive Jewish community in our area.

If you have ideas you’d like to discuss, please email me? [email protected]

Sisterhood…Women Enjoying Jewish LifeI am writing this in the spring (though Memorial

Day has passed and it is the “Summer Season”); you will read it in the summer; and some of what it entails we think of as “Fall events” (though this year technically still summer for a bit). Confused? Don’t be! It is the transitional time where we prepare to go from the past year to the New Year. And this year, there will be some additional transitions along with the usual ones.

We have to prepare for the coming year and our High Holiday projects. Rosh Hashanah begins early in September this year. This means that the annual Honey Sale is well underway. For $11 a jar, you can have a jar of delicious kosher honey shipped to your loved ones all over the country. There is no shipping charge for orders placed by July 7th. Just go to the First Hebrew website and click on the link to the honey sale. After July 7th, shipping is only $4 per jar and orders placed by August 31st are guaranteed for Rosh Hashanah delivery. We are also hard at work preparing the annual Book of Remembrance. The due date for sponsors is August 21st. I know it may seem hard to think of these things when the sun is so hot and thoughts are mostly of beaches and bar-b-ques but the days do pass quickly.

Our Sisterhood will also go through a bit of a transition but it should be quite seamless. It is my pleasure to welcome Fran Olmsted to her new position as Sisterhood co-President this summer. Fran is someone we can always count on to give her all on any project or program we have

undertaken. She has always been committed to the benefit of the community at First Hebrew Congregation and has served Sisterhood for many years as the Vice-President for Programming. She will continue to chair the Social Action committee and the Library committee. If you want something done, give it to a busy woman! And a Mazel Tov as well to the congregation’s new President, Chuck Newman. There is a lot of new leadership here at First Hebrew.

And of course, our congregation is going through a transition with its clergy. We wish all the best to Rabbi Lee and Judy Paskind as they move on from our community. We thank them for their years of service to all our members and wish them Mazel Tov in the future. We also wish a welcome to Rabbi Dana Bogatz and her husband Fred, who will be joining us officially in August. May this time be fruitful for us all.

So the next Sisterhood article will come to you from the pen (computer?) of Fran Olmsted. In the meantime, don’t miss the opportunity to send in your membership for Sisterhood, order your honey, and send in your lists for the Book of Remembrance. Apply your sunscreen when you go outdoors, stay hydrated, and enjoy the summer with your family and friends. We look forward to seeing you throughout the summer!

Shalom, Mindy E. Steinholz Sisterhood Co-President

FHC Babysitting Clearing HouseWho of us with young children isn’t looking for a few good babysitters? FHC will continue to list the names of our teenagers (and others) who would like to baby-sit for other families in the congregation. Of course, you will need to pay these sitters! FHC will provide this service purely as a convenience to its members and will take no responsibility for the individuals who offer their services here for pay.

My name is Madison Kagan, and I am a 7th grader at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School. Some activities I enjoy are dancing, playing basketball, and having fun with my family and friends. I am excited about having my Bat Mitzvah on August 16th. For my Mitzvah Project, I am helping the Pajama Program by collecting pajamas and books for children in

foster homes. The Pajama Program has many opportunities for volunteers to read or sort books for these kids. I will have a box in the Temple lobby for pajamas and books to be donated, and all donations are greatly appreciated.

Let Everyone Know How Proud We are of Our Children! The Board of Education would like to honor our wonderful Bar/Bat Mitzvah students in a special way!

We would like each student to submit a brief biography (5-7 sentences) to be placed in the synagogue bulletin. The biography could include information such as their Bar/BatMitzvah date, grade, school, outside interests, and should include a short description about his/her service project; you may also include a photograph if you like. The responsibility to write and submit this information belongs to the family of the child. Please do not cause unnecessary disappointment for your children when they don’t see their names in the bulletin with their classmates. The biography must be submitted to the editor SIX WEEKS prior to the first day of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah month to ensure placement in a timely fashion. Any articles sent after that time will be placed in the next bulletin, which may be after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date. Please submit the biography to the bulletin at bulletin@ FirstHebrew.org or you can mail or fax to the FHC office.

The synagogue bulletin is a place not only for news and information about FHC and its members, but also a forum for members to place information that may be of interest to their fellow congregants. We are happy to consider all articles submitted to Kehilataynu; however, we reserve the right to edit for style, and length. In addition, all articles submitted by FHC members are labeled as such and do not reflect the opinion of FHC or the Board of Trustees.

Please keep the following in mind: • Articles and announcements must be received in the FHC

office by the date below. • Please submit your article or announcement via e-mail to

[email protected]. If you do not have a computer, and/or your submission is not available in digital format, you may fax, mail, or deliver your (typed) submission(s) to the temple office.
