Here are some gardening tips from our experts that will help you start the process and ensure yourgarden will be ready for next spring:• Give your garden ahealthy layer of compost or manure. There shouldn’t be any ex-

posed soil on the surface, and this layer of insulation will act as a blanket through the winter. There’s no need to till it as the earthworms will be happy to do the heavy lifting for you.

• Collect dried seeds from your garden. You can save these to sow in the spring or plant them in other areas of your garden if you know where you want them to grow. Further, collecting these now will also reduce the number of volunteers you’ll have to handle in the spring.

• Clean out your bird feeders and birdhouses. The birds are getting ready to head south for their vacations, and show them you appreciate all they’ve done for you this summer by cleaning up after them. The cleaner you get these, the more likely they’ll return to your garden in the spring.

• Don’t forget to water. Your trees and shrubs will continue to be thirsty until the ground begins to freeze. They’re not dormant yet, and with our dry and mild climate, they will need the moisture to stay healthy throughout the winter ahead. This is espe-cially true if you’ve just planted your trees and shrubs this season and they’re still getting acclimated to your landscape and our climate.

GIVE YOUR OLD TERRA-COTTA FLOWER POTS A MAKEOVER

Patios, porches, and living rooms across the city are being adorned with plenty of Terra-Cotta pots this year. These durable and inexpensive containers make the perfect home for everything from flowers to ferns.

However, since everyone is using them, now would be a good time to give your Terra-Cotta a distinctive touch all your own. You can make your Terra-Cotta pots stand out from everyone else’s by giving them a makeover and following these gardening tips.Start by giving your pots a glaze. All you need is a paintbrush, some sandpaper, a little of your favorite paint, some waterproofing sealer, and a touch of shellac to finish them off.First, you will want to wash your pot off to remove dirt and debris and then allow it to dry. Once it is dry, apply a coat of waterproofing sealer to the interior surface. After this dries, apply a coat of paint to the exterior and allow it to dry for 24 hours.After the first coat dries, sand down any rough edges or spots. Then apply a second coat and allow it to dry, also for 24 hours. Once the second coat has dried, apply a generous coat of shellac to protect it.When that is dried, all you have to do is place and layer your favorite plants inside the pot and sit back and smile as your neighbors give you compliment after compliment for your fabulous sense of decorating style.
