Dear KCSA Parents and Kansas City Parents,I am sitting at home with tears running down my face. My brother, a pediatrician from Rochester, New York just wrote to tell me that one of his patients, a two year old, drowned in an above ground pool at day care.

Ten years ago, I went to my brother when I wanted to get involved with Infant Aquatics. I wanted to know from a medical standpoint what the reaction would be to teaching infants and toddlers to swim. My brother was very hesitant and told me to emphasize the safety aspects of the pro-gram. This year when we started our program, I kept him up to date on what KCSA and IA are trying to accomplish.

A recent youtube video featured an 18 month old swimming across a small pool. There have been 1.1 million viewers. Most of the people were commenting on the parents forcing their child to work out! The safety aspects were not discussed. Infant Aquatics is NOT about having little children work out. The #1 reason to teach a child to swim is to prevent an aquatic accident such as drowning or severe aquatic injury. These accidents are totally preventable.

This summer in KC we have had six drownings: four adults, one 16 year old and one two year old. This is a terrible tragedy that never should happen.

At the KCSA we emphasize to your children the importance of water safety: not div-ing into unmarked lakes, ponds, pools. When in doubt, don’t do it! The importance of wearing a certified Coast Guard life jacket when riding in a boat or enjoying water sports like water skiing, boating, fishing. Making the wise decision when they are out with their family or friends. Never swim alone.

I am writing this email to remind everyone to use good decisions when around water. Have a healthy respect for the water. Encourage everyone to learn to swim

I want to thank Flip Short and Dan Lowe for helping KCSA to bring Infant Aquatics and rescue floating to the KC area. Our Lee’s Summit facility is perfect for teaching any level of person to learn to swim.

I hope that in the future I can send to you only our success stories and no more heartbreaking news of drownings! The KCSA and staff have our work cut out for us but I am so proud that with the help of Flip and Dan that we can make a lasting dif-ference and save lives in KC!

July 11, 2013– A groundbreaking ex-hibition of mid-19th century French painting and pho-tography opens at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City Oct. 19, 2013 where it will be on view through Feb. 9, 2014 and at The Saint Louis Art Mu-seum from March 16 through July 6, 2014.

Featuring approximately 125 works, Impressionist France: Visions of Nation from Le Gray to Monet takes visitors on a vicarious journey through the spectacular French landscape, emphasizing connections between photography, painting and the emerging Impressionist artists during a period in which France was being funda-mentally transformed and modernized (1850-1880).

Key paintings by well-known artists such as Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, as well as important pho-tographs by influential photographers like Gustave Le Gray and Édouard Baldus will be featured.

“This pioneering exhibition juxtaposes two contrasting mediums, Photography and Painting, at a time in which each forces new perspectives for the other,” said Julián Zugazagoitia, Director of the Nelson-Atkins. “Photog-raphy allows for an accurate record of reality, liberating artists from realism, inaugurating the movement of Im-

pressionism. This exhibition explores through these two mediums the birth of modernity and transports us to a time when France was evolving from its rural traditions to industrial modernity. “Landscape imagery was an important aspect of the broader campaign to con-struct a new sense of nation in France during this time,” said Kelly. “Impressionist France explores the way painters and photographers constructed an idea of France through their explo-rations of the country’s ex-ceptionally rich and diverse geography and history.”

Works will be grouped into seven sections that explore different types of landscape: Paris and the Modern Cityscape, Monuments, Forests and Rivers, Rural and Agricultural Life, Railroads and Factories, Mountains, and Marine Views.

This exhibition will include important works from 42 museums and private collections, including The Met-ropolitan Museum of Art, The J. Paul Getty Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts, Hous-ton, the Victoria and Albert Mu-seum, and the Musées nation-aux du Palais de Compiègne, among many others. It will also be the first major exhibi-tion to feature significant and important new acquisitions by the Nelson-Atkins in 19th-cen-tury French photography.

This exhibition has been co-organized by The Nelson-At-kins Museum of Art and Saint Louis Art Museum. Support is provided by the Hall Family Foundation, the National En-dowment for the Arts, the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities, The Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foun-dation for Documentary Photography & Film, and the

I got the inspiration for my tiled garden mirror from a few projects posted on the inspiring website, Pinterest. I knew at some point that I’d like to tile something, even if it had to be the cat! I also wanted to try my hand at grouting, and preparing an accessory item for my garden deck.

For the past few years our back deck was more of a laundry spot, for the clothesline, and the grilling spot. This year we added a cou-ple of old rocking chairs, a few tomato plants in pots, couple of peppers, a nectarine tree, a blueberry bush, a flower arrangement, 2 pots of mint, and a weathered outdoor coffee table! The deck quickly grew into another room in the house, needing a few acces-sories, or “bling.”

We once had a small, old, rusty trash can, about the size of a bath-room wastebasket, in the garage. It must have been used for dog food long ago. I put the lid of the trash can on a shelf in the garage to marinate, which it did... for about 3 years. This past spring felt like the right time for this project.

I purchased a bag of about 100 1” square glass tiles in shades of green, blue, clear and aqua. Additionally, I purchased a bag of powdered grout, in a slate gray color. With a tube of “liquid nails” I secured the mirror in the middle of inside of the can lid. Don’t forget to wear rubber gloves!

Then I put the lid with mirror to marinate in the garage overnight. We had a small tub of grout/tile adhesive in the tool room, so I smeared a medium thin layer of that on the inside of the lid. Re-member your gloves! Then I started laying on the tile, somewhat close together. I didn’t bother with a pattern, I liked the colors mixed. I tried to make sure to push each tile in the adhesive slight-ly, and hold it for about 5 seconds. Once I filled the lid, outside of the inserted mirror, I left the whole thing to dry again overnight.

I blocked out at least 2 hours for the next part. Once I mixed the water and grout powder, I had a limited amount of time to use up the grout mix, or it would harden. I filled a recycled yogurt quart container (my go-to container for gardening, mix-ing, everything!) with the grout powder, then mixed in the water, to make grout the consistency of wettish peanut butter. It was pretty easy to slide and massage the sandy grout, with gloves on, into the slim spaces between the glass tiles, with gloves on.

After working the grout in, I took a large damp sponge and drew it across the surface to even out the grout across the surface of my mirror. (mirror now meaning the lid, tile, mirror insert, everything.) This also lightly cleaned the grout off the top of the tiles. Marinate overnight, or at least a few hours.

Next morning, I took another clean(ish) damp sponge to the surface, and even took some windex to the glass mirror part. I was too excited to find out how the tile glistened in the sun so i took it out to the deck, and quickly attached it to the fence.

This was a great project for me, a beginner. The materials seemed easy enough to find mostly in one place. I also enjoyed that the whole project was small. There are lots of possibilities here for reusing and recycling. Buttons would work well in place of tiles, or sea glass, old marbles, even costume jewelry? You could also substitute an old worn out round cake pan or cookie sheet for the can lid. The adhesive for the tiles needn’t be the grout/tile adhesive that I used. Liquid nails, super glue, or even elmers glue works in a pinch. Remember this would be strongly reinforced with the grout.

Michelle Gressel of Gardner, Kansas founded The Torn Edge art studio in 2010 in search of an authentic, transparent and purposeful way of life. The art pieces began simply enough – as thank you gifts to her kids’ teachers – but the torn scraps of paper matured into something more meaningful in time. For her first series, she wrote down words on scraps of paper – Love, Soul, Strength, Mind – but had no idea what to make of them; that is, until her mother-in-law decoded the words for her.

“It was Luke 10:27 – Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, with all your mind. And love your neighbor as yourself.” The concluding line convicted Michelle, because she realized that to truly love others she must first love herself. Broken parts and all.

And so it was that Michelle discovered her art offered a metaphor for brokenness and healing. By laying down the torn edges of her past, something of far greater worth emerged from the dysfunc-tional pieces.

The Torn Edge set her on a journey, not only of self-acceptance, but to help others accept themselves. She began sharing her story of repurposed life at speaking engagements, with everyone from churchgoers to inmates, learning that no matter the audience, the

things that hold us back are the same. These engagements, Mi-chelle says, provide the hurting a safe place to share their journeys and connect.

Michelle views her art not in terms of any talent she possesses, but in terms of the friendships she cultivates in the creative process. “These friendships,” she says, “are more valuable materials to the finished work than any paper, any metal, any paint or any canvas.”

The sunflower logo of The Torn Edge beautifully illustrates this point: Michelle is the heart in the middle of the sunflower, her friends the petals radiating out. As she shares her story, more peo-ple share their stories and the gift goes on. As it does, new hearts will spring up and more petals radiate out, until what began as one woman’s journey of brokenness blossoms into a field of flowers.
