Naturalist Mary Ochenslager teaches Janet Oncken of Sugar Grove the basics of identifying tree speciesduring a winter tree identification class Ochenslager taught Sunday through the Sugar Grove Park Districtat Bliss Woods Forest Preserve in Sugar Grove.

IDing trees in winterBy JONATHAN [email protected]

SUGAR GROVE – Afterdecades of walking KaneCounty’s woodlands, MaryOchenslager can identify thespecies of a tree simply bylooking at it.

But even an experienced nat-uralist like Ochenslager, whohas worked in the past for the St.Charles Park District and nowconducts programs on behalf ofthe Sugar Grove Park District, must at times look closer.

And Ochenslager said oneof her favorite activities ishelping other people learnthose same kinds of skills.

“It’s just something Ifeel right here, in my gut,”Ochenslager said, thumping aclenched fist against her ab-domen. “I think all of this isjust so wonderful, and I want

everyone else to see how won-derful it is, too.”

Ochenslager annually teach-es anyone interested abouttrees, flowers, birds and othernatural facets of Kane County.

Sunday, despite the mid-March cold, Ochenslager tooka small group of students alongthe edge of the woods at BlissWoods Forest Preserve in Sug-ar Grove, teaching the basics ofidentifying trees in the winter.

She noted that many peopleoften can correctly identifytrees by their leaves.

But she said many of thosesame people may struggle totell one deciduous tree fromanother during the monthswhen the leaves have fallen.

Ochenslager walked herstudents through the processof using twigs, buds, barkand fallen leaves and seeds toidentify various local species,

including white ash, variousoaks, black walnut and butter-nut hickory.

“Some people think theycan come to a class likethis, and leave knowinghow to identify any tree,”Ochenslager said. “There’smore to it than that.

“But anyone who comes tothis class can leave knowingthe tools that can help themidentify any tree.”

Janet Oncken of SugarGrove said she attended theclass to continue her ownself-education on the localforests, so she can pass on theknowledge to her grandchil-dren and other area children.

“I like nature, a lot,” saidOncken, a retired teacher. “Iknow I can learn from Mary, and I want to find a way touse that to guide children onthings like this.”

St. Charles marks St. Patrick’s Day with paradeBy NICOLE [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – The streetsof downtown St. Charles wereflooded with green Saturdayafternoon as hundreds of peo-ple gathered to watch the an-nual St. Patrick’s Parade andcelebrate Irish heritage.

About 75 entrants passedcrowds along Main Streetfrom Sixth Street to FourthAvenue in the hourlong pa-rade. Many who were gath-ered prepared sit in 30-degreetemperatures by bringingalong blankets, and somebrought along umbrellas orrain coats, just in case.

Aside from the occasion-al flurry of snow, the pre-cipitation held off. Nick andStephanie Stravropoulos ofSt. Charles and their twodaughters, Tessa, 5, and Lily,9, braved the cold to carry onthe 10-year family traditionof watching the St. Patrick’s

Parade.“We look forward to it

every year,” said StephanieStravropoulos, adding thatthe St. Charles North march-ing band was her favorite pa-rade entry.

Nick Stravropoulos saidtheir relatives from out oftown usually join them for theparade, but didn’t make it thisyear. He said St. Patrick’s Dayis for celebrating the “littleIrish” that runs in their family.

Many in attendance woregreen or waved Irish flags. Some had a more boisterouswardrobe, wearing oversizedgreen sunglasses, tall greenhats, fake beards and mus-taches and green wigs andfeather boas.

Parade entries includedyouth organizations suchas the Girl Scouts and BoyScouts, along with business-es, churches, political can-didates, sports teams, highschool bands and pets.

Several bagpipe bandsmarched in the parade, draw-ing cheers and applause fromcrowds.

Beverly resident Berna-dette Glavin-O’Pater said thebagpipers were her favoritepart. Dan Glavin-O’Pater andtheir son, Danny, 6, watchedthe parade, too, and all threewore green to celebrate theirIrish heritage.

Bernadette Glavin-O’Paterwore a pair of oversized sun-glasses shaped like shamrocksalong with a green featherboa, and Danny wore severalgreen-beaded necklaces.

“We’re Irish, and it’s fun,”she said.

Bernadette Glavin-O’Patersaid her family attends the pa-rade each year in St. Charles, along with several other St.Patrick’s Day parades in theChicago area.

She summed up Saturday’sparade in one word – “excel-lent.”

Geneva goalkeeper San Hauser makes a save during Saturday’s match against Waubonsie Valley at Metea Valley High School. Geneva

lost, 2-1.

Vikings drop season openerBy JAY SCHWAB

[email protected]

AURORA – The Geneva girls soccerteam was supposed to open its seasonat Wheaton Academy this week butthat match was scrapped because ofshaky field conditions.

That left the Vikings in the unen-viable position of starting off againsttraditional powerhouse WaubonsieValley. Geneva struck first and playeda decent match but dropped its seasonopener, 2-1, in Saturday afternoon’sUpstate Eight Conference crossover.

“We’ve hardly been outside,” Gene-va coach Megan Owens said. “Nobodywants to open up their season withWaubonsie. It’s a tough opener, andthey’ve already had a game.”

Given those circumstances, it wasespecially encouraging for the Vikingswhen sophomore defender Megan Ko-zlow’s bending corner kick made itthrough traffic and into the net to givethe Vikings a 1-0 advantage midwaythrough the first half.

“She’s got a nice, left-footed in-swinging cross,” Owens said of Ko-

zlow. “She did a great job with that.”The Vikings retained that lead

through halftime but Waubonsie’sKristen Dodson scored a pair of goalswithin the first 12 minutes of the sec-ond half for the afternoon’s final tal-lies.

Until that point, it had been a dyna-mite debut for Geneva junior goalkeep-er Sam Hauser.

Despite the Warriors’ pair of sec-ond half scores, Owens still cameaway impressed by Hauser, whostarted the match on strong footingby punching a dangerous, floatingshot over the crossbar in the earlygoing.

“She made some really, really nicesaves, and it’s her first year on varsi-ty,” Owens said. “We’ve been indoorsso we didn’t know what to expect soshe was a very pleasant surprise. Shedid a great job for us.”

Geneva was unable to sustain of-fensive pressure in the second half, although forward Amanda Lulek andmidfielder/defender Annie Waldocheach mustered solid shots on goal thatwould have tied the score at 2.

While several key pieces returnfrom last year’s conference championteam, the Vikings have some retoolingto do, especially in the midfield.

“I think we gave a solid perfor-mance,” Owens said. “I didn’t see anybig issues. I think we were very solidin goal. It’s just getting used to play-ing with new teammates. It’s a hardgame. You couldn’t make a lot of ad-justments. They put a lot of pressureon you, but I saw a lot of good things.”

The match, played on a chilly after-noon in front of a sparse crowd, wasmoved to Metea Valley’s turf field.

“Ours is a flat soccer field so oursisn’t going to get touched until proba-bly spring break,” Waubonsie Valleycoach Julie Bergstom said. “It is whatit is. Ours right now, I don’t even thinkhas the goals up. I mean, they just tookthe plastic off. We’re not even near [be-ing able to use it].”

The Warriors (1-1) dropped theirseason opener against Lyons beforeprevailing against the Vikings.

“I think we’re playing some goodsoccer considering it’s March,”Bergstom said.

Time for spring sportsto take the stageThis crummyweather will run its

course soon enough, and it’ll be timefor the area’s spring athletes to dotheir thing, be it inside or out.Sly can’t wait because you can

always count on schools aroundthe Tri-Cities to field some excellentteams this time of year.In girls soccer alone, you had St.

Charles North take second in Class3A last year and St. Francis win it allin 2A, and both of those teams returnplenty of talent from those groups.Add in quality programs like Genevaand St. Charles East, andwe’reguaranteed to have some slick playon the pitch.Softball-wise, St. Charles North

and Kaneland look like they could beheaded for big years, and look out forBurlington Central and St. Francis be-cause they’ve got big-time pitchers, and you knowwhat that means inthe game of softball.Expecting another awesome

Upstate Eight Conference River racein baseball, which is prettymuch thenorm since the conference cameto be. Seems like it always comesdown to the end, and that’ll probablybe the case again if teams can figureout a way to scratch out someWsagainst Geneva’s lights-out pitchingstaff. You can’t ever count out St.Charles East or St. Charles Northbaseball, and Batavia should bemorethan respectable, as well. Can’t forget about track. Based

on the UEC girls indoormeet, lookout for the Saints this season.Wow,what a performance. It’s easy for sports to get lost in

the shuffle in the chaotic spring(boys volleyball and boys tennis andwater polo and badminton, oh my),but there’s never a shortage of stuffgoing on this time of year. And, inSly’s book, that’s a beautiful thing.

Tri-Cities teams fallbehind at leaguemeet

By AKEEM [email protected]

BATAVIA – With threeevents left in Saturday’s Up-state Eight Conference BoysIndoor Track Meet, Bartlettwas 6½ points ahead of St.Charles North and minutesfrom its best finish in schoolhistory.

Coming into the meet,Hawks coach Eric Kramersaid the team’s goal was tofinish better than fourth, which is the highest anyBartlett team has finished inan indoor or outdoor meet. The Hawks secured thirdplace overall after a thirdplace finish in the 4x400-me-ter relay.

The Bartlett relay teamwon its heat with a time of3:34.56, which is a school re-cord. The team ultimately fin-ished behind Neuqua Valleyand St. Charles North, withtimes of 3:32.10 and 3:32.43, re-spectively.

Heading into the finalrace, Kramer made sure hisrunners knew what was onthe line.

“Coaches always try tofind a little extra motivationand throw it their way. Wehave experienced runners, they understand what thatlast relay was about. It’s oneof the most exciting racesthat you can watch at a trackmeet,” Kramer said.

St. Charles North fin-ished fourth overall with 66½points, the top finish amongthe Tri-Cities contingent.

The North Stars finishedwith six top-3 finishes in-cluding first place finishesin the 400 by Zach Kirby andthe 4x200 relay team. Sprint-er Jack Feeney was one ofthe top point scorers for theNorth Stars; Feeney placedthird in the 200 and was amember of the 4x200 and4x400 relay teams.

F e e n e y w a s v i s i b l ydrained after his last runand said he was adjusting toan increased workload after

mainly focusing on the 4x400relay.

Feeney credited his focusbefore the meet with allow-ing him to have the energyto compete at a high level inmultiple events.

Batavia (sixth place), Ge-neva (seventh place) and St.Charles East also competed.East finished in an eighth-place tie with South Elgin.

Overall, Bartlett capturedeight top-3 finishes, includingfirst place in the 800 and 55hurdles by Connor Rachfordand Alex Bailey, respectively.

Bailey said his work ontechnique in practice al-lowed him to take the 55 hur-dles indoor title.

“I felt really good cominginto this meet – me and mycoaches worked a lot on drag-ging my trail leg through [the

jump] so it could drop mytime,” Bailey said. “My pre-liminary time, … I wasn’t toohappy with that, but I wentback and talked to my coach-es. We got to the basics andgot some of the little thingsto help me for my next run.”

Overall, defending statechampion Lake Park fin-ished in first place with137.5 points and capturedthe Upstate Eight IndoorConference Championship. The Lancers topped lastyear’s indoor championsNeuqua Valley by 22½ pointsas the Wildcats finished sec-ond overall.

As Bartlett prepares foroutdoor season, Kramer saidthis finish should give hisathletes confidence to keep-ing growing as a team.

“We’re seeing a lot of theteams that we see at our sec-tional here, so it’s a goodmeasure of where we’re at, atthe halfway point of the sea-son,” Kramer said. “Anytimeyou can get these kids moreconfident, boosting theirself-esteem, it’s just going tomake them work harder andhaving the success we didtoday bodes real well for usheading into outdoor [sea-son].”

Wedding for bride onrebound should be small

Dear Abby: My 26-year-old daughter was marriedlast year, but four monthsafter the wedding herhusband was arrested forchild molestation that hadoccurred years before. Shefiled for divorce immedi-ately.

In the meantime, she hasmet someone and is nowpregnant.

They want to be marriedas soon as her divorce isfinal. My question is, whatkind of ceremony would beappropriate in this case, especially since her fatherand I are church pastors ina small town? – Small-TownWedding

Dear Small Town: If yourdaughter had written tome, I would have advisedher not to rush into anoth-er marriage so quickly, andthat if she hasn’t alreadydone so, she should seeksome counseling because ofwhat she has been through.

However, because sheand the father of her babyare determined to tie theknot as soon as possible, their ceremony should below-key, with a few closefriends and family attend-ing.

The ceremony could beeither a religious one or acivil one, depending upontheir preference. I hopetheir union will be a happyand successful one.

Dear Abby: At whatage should parents stopworrying about you? I am41 years old, but in my par-ents’ eyes I am still a child.

I am an independentwoman and feel like I amnot living the life I deserve, and I don’t think it’s fair.I do everything by myself, and I want them to knowthat if something happensto them, I’ll be fine, andthey should stop worrying.Am I wrong to feel thisway? – Deborah in Ohio

Dear Deborah: You arenot wrong. However, yourparents may be clinging toyou not because they areworried about what willhappen to you if somethinghappens to THEM.

They may be clingy

because they are worriedabout what will happen toTHEM if something hap-pens to YOU.

Dear Abby: My husbandof eight years had an affairwith an old girlfriend whois also married. I havespent the last nine monthstrying to forgive him, buthe keeps breaking my heartbecause he can’t seem toget over her.

First he was sending heremails, then trying to callher because he felt so guiltyover the affair and “neededsomeone to talk to.” Next,he went over to her houseto see her. I know he lovesme, but I know withouta doubt he loves her, too.I’m expecting and due inthe short-term, and I don’tknow how to heal.

The last time they talked– about a month ago – hetold her she had ruined hislife and he never wantedto see or think about heragain. But I know he stillsearches her profile onFacebook every day andI know she blocked him,so he must be going nutsbecause he can’t see herand her kids’ pictures. I ha-ven’t confronted him aboutthis yet, but feel I need to.Please help me. – Broken-hearted in Buffalo

Dear Brokenhearted: Theold girlfriend seems to bedoing her part to end theaffair.

Whether your husbandis “going nuts” because hecan’t see her on Facebookis HIS problem, so pleasedon’t make it yours.

Bide your time, haveyour baby, and then whenyou’re strong enough, DOconfront him.

Insist on marriage coun-seling for both of you. Youneed to understand why hestrayed before you or themarriage can heal.

Aldo Leopold, an ecologistand environmentalist who diedin 1948, said, “Conservation is astate of harmony between menand land.”

Entry conservation in bridgeis a state of harmony betweencards and hands. That was thesubject of last week’s columns. But before we move on, here isone more declarer techniquethat requires careful entry han-dling. How should South play infour hearts after West leads theclub king?

The auction followed a pre-dictable path.

South has four losers: twodiamonds and two clubs. He hasonly nine top tricks: two spades, six hearts and one club. The onlychance for an extra winner is toestablish dummy’s spades. Butif that suit is splitting 4-2, as itrates to do, declarer will needthree dummy entries: two forruffing spades in his hand andone to return to the dummy tocash the 13th spade. What arethose entries?

They must be one spade andtwo hearts. Why not two spades?

Because an entry counts onlyif South can immediately trumpa spade in his hand.

This is the best line: Winthe first trick with the club ace, cash the heart king, play offdummy’s top spades, and ruff aspade high in hand so that theunfriendly West cannot over-ruff. Continue with a low heartto dummy’s nine, ruff anotherspade high, and play a trump todummy’s ace (removing West’slast heart). Then South canhappily cash the spade six anddiscard one of his minor-suitlosers.

That is textbook entry conser-vation and suit establishment.
