1.1 Introduction

1.2 Statement of the Problem- Determine the effectiveness of music therapy in reducing pain in the active phase of the first

stage of labor.- Specifically, this study would answer the following questions.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents.- Age- Socio economic group.

2. What is the extent of pain among primiparas in the active phase of the first stage of labor.- Experimental group- Control group

3. Is there any significant effect of music therapy in relieving pain among the primiparas in theactive phase of the first stage of labor in the experimental group.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

- Determine the effectiveness of music therapy in reducing pain inthe active phase of the first stage of labor.

- Specifically this study intends in:- 1. Using pre selected music of different genre.- 2. Applying music therapy as nursing intervention in laboring

women.- 3. Is there any significant effect of music therapy in relieving pain

among the primiparas in the active phase of the first stage of labor in the experimental group.

1.4 Scope and Delimitation

This study will be focused on 20 laboring women who are 18-40 years old in the active phase of the first stage of labor with 3

to 4 cm cervical dilatation in the labor room of hospitals andMaternity Clinics in Rizal (to be determined) who willinglyapproved the researcher request of experimentation in their institution that will be conducted within May to July 2008. Thisstudy is delimited in subjects who are nit in the active phase of

first stage of labor, with mental illness, with hearing loss and insubjects who are multipara.

powerful anxiolytic agent which can be usefulfor clients who will be in labor. Soft music canreduce the laboring mothers perception of pain and also her distress. It also provides

better pain management, may speedrecovery from childbirth and improve themother- infant relationship.

A convenience sampling will be utilized wherein themost readily available subjects will beaccommodated for his research study.The subjects that will be included in the experimentalstudy are 20 primiparas who are in their active phaseof first stage of labor with three to four centimeters of

cervical dilatation, with no mental illness and are nothaving multiple pregnancies. Exclusion of thesubjects is based on the criterion of having hearingproblems.

Music intervention will compose of three set

of tracks which consists of five songs indifferent genre.The music will compose of five genre; classicby Bach, pop, ballad, classical new age and

acoustic.

3.6 Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will ask permission to conduct the study inhospital.

The selection of target subject of the studySecuring informed consent for the subject of the study.Conduct on pretest on both experimental and control group.Conduct the post test both to the experimental and controlgroup.Gathering of all data for analysis and interpretation with thehelp of statistician.
