08, 09 and 10 Nov 2012Mary Stuart Theatrical PerformanceDrama Theater, Building 16

Japanese photographer Kimiko Yoshida studied photography in Japan as well as in France, where she lives and works since 1995. Her brilliant photographic portraits capture the timeless tradition reinterpreted by a plethora of cultures throughout history. In addition, Kimiko’s unique artistic vision and vivid ensemble not only blend countless cultures, rituals, and mythologies to summon timeless female beauty; but they also remind us, somehow ironically, of the sheer breadth of human diversity and alikeness we share (AFRO STYLE MAGAZINE Summer,2012).

For the Katara Galleries exhibition the curator has selected works where the artist features her interpretation of Middle Eastern, Arab and North African traditional dress and accessories. As in all Kimiko’s photographic work, she features in all the works as an absent character, presenting her vision of the culture or cultural aspect she chooses to share with the audience. Her work is of breathtaking lightness and the visitor cannot but get absorbed by the work and identify convergence and dialogue possibilities with the artwork.Through Kimiko’s work the visitor will be able to have access to the elementary pieces of different cultural interpretations, the artist manages in all her work to offer us the essential, the minimal but also the ultimately necessary hints and elements for understanding the “other”, his culture, and ultimately ourselves, in relation to the “other”.

Katara introduces The Faction Theater and Schiller’s masterpiece Mary Stuart for the first time in Qatar. The Faction starts its international tour with three performances of Mary Stuart in Katara’s Drama Theater on the 08th, 09th and 10th of November. An amazing performance that gathered astonishing reviews, Mary Stuart is a theatrical play that no one should miss.

A political prisoner is accused of religious extremism, incitement of war and masterminding assassination. She has been retrospectively charged with a law that was invented specifically for her. She has been denied access to witnesses and found guilty by a jury – but not a jury of her peers. That would be impossible; her only peer is Queen Elizabeth I. This presents Elizabeth with a terrifying dilemma: to reign in fear for the rest of her life or to have her cousin and fellow queen executed.

Following the success of last year’s Shared Glass Exhibition, Katara, the Cultural Village proudly presents Constantin Boym: Learning from Mabkhara. The exhibition will open at 7:00pm on Thursday 8th November at Katara .

Featuring unique and exquisite shapes and designs, Mabkhara is a traditional Arab incense burner, an authentic object typically used as daily domestic activities in the Arab world. Incense burners serve as representations of sensorial culture of the East, much celebrated in the world of literature and arts of the last two centuries. The exhibition will present the new objects alongside their traditional prototypes from the region, to illustrate the process of “learning” and to better highlight the dialectic between continuity and innovation.

Encounter: The Royal Academy in the Middle East, is an exhibition featuring over 80 works of art in a wide variety of media by 25 Royal Academicians and 25 prominent artists from across the Middle East. Encounter offers a unique concept in showcasing the best of contemporary art practice around the globe. Eschewing the presentation of a single curatorial point of view or theme, Encounter enters into the spirit of engagement with the international art community and the general public by inviting important artists from different countries to exhibit side-by-side with a selection of prominent Royal Academicians. The aim of Encounter is to provide a platform for dialogue amongst practitioners working in a wide range of media – painting, sculpture, assemblage, photography and video – and for an international team of curators to exchange ideas about different communities and environments and how this translates into visual art experience. The Royal Academy of Arts counts among its members many of the world’s most renowned artists, spanning generations and working in a variety of styles and techniques. Many are rightfully recognised as influential pioneers of contemporary art. The participating Middle East artists are among the most established and eminent talents emerging from around the region. This unique combination of artists presents a rich and dynamic cross-section of cultural perspectives.

06 Dec – 12 Jan 2013Naji Al Ali: Caricaturist ExhibitionGallery 1&2, Building 18

2012 Marks the 25th anniversary of the assassination n of the renown Palestinian caricaturist, Naji Al-Ali. Naji’s career began in 1963 as a caricaturist for the Kuwaiti Newspaper Al Tali’a and eventually included over 10,000 drawings published in newspapers throughout the Arab world. During his lifetime and posthumously, he was awarded many prizes including the prestigious “Golden Pen of Freedom” award from the International Federation of Newspaper Publishers. Naji was the first ever caricaturist to have won this prize and first ever Arab journalist.

Naji’s iconic cartoons focus exclusively on the plight and resistance of the Palestinian people. He is perhaps best known for his iconic figure, Handala, a ten year old Palestinian boy on barefoot, dressed in rags with his hands defiantly clasped behind his back.

To commemorate Naji al-Ali’s numerous achievments and to pay homage to his 25 year long career, Katara together with AlMarkhiya Gallery jointly brings this exhibition. It will be first time ever that Naji’s original drawings will be exhibited in the Middle East and only second time anywhere since his assassination in London in 1987.

The virtuosic Elina Garanca sings Sesto in Mozart’s drama set in ancient Rome. Giuseppe Filianoti is the noble Tito and Barbara Frittoli is Vitellia, in this handsome revival of one of the composer’s final masterpieces. Harry Bicket conducts.

Curated by Francesco Bonami, this exhibition profiles three types of history-makers and highlights the power of painting as a medium for recording historical events and portraying iconic figures. Yan Pei-Ming is a world-renowned artist who became known for his “epic-sized” portraits of Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong, and actor Bruce Lee.

Ongoing Event

Page 9: Katara Newsletter

Katara celebrated Eid Al Adha in the most brilliant way bringing you 3 nights of spectacular firework display. From the 26 to the 28 of October Katara visitors enjoyed a magnificent show of fireworks in the beachfront, lighting up the sky!

A Visionary Modernist, is the first museum retrospective of acclaimed Sudanese artist, Ibrahim El-Salahi. Including approximately 80 works encompassing over five decades of the artist’s career, this retrospective highlights drawings and paintings from international institutions and private collections. A Visionary Modernist follows work produced during El-Salahi’s travels and ongoing spiritual journey. The Exhibition begins with paintings from the periods before, during, and immediately following El-Salahi’s time at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art at University College, London, in 1954. This was a time of self-discovery as well as an introduction to other world cultures and artistic practices. Inspired by art ranging from Ancient Islam, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance, to Modernists such as Cézanne, Pissarro, and Seurat, El-Salahi began to incorporate various visual techniques into his work. The exhibition continues with work made upon El-Salahi’s return to Sudan in 1957 and the years that followed. A Visionary Modernist concludes with paintings and drawings produced after El-Salahi’s return to Oxford, England, in 1998, to the present day, a period that represents the culmination of the artist’s experiences and career.

Ibrahim El-Salahi: A Visionary Modernist is organized by the Museum for African Art, New York, and guest curated by Dr. Salah M. Hassan, Goldwin Smith Professor, Cornell University.

Eric Parnes has worked with Katara’s Curator developing the current exhibition, discussing the theme of Orientalism and more precisely “Neo-Orientalism” as interpreted by the artist. The works selected for the exhibition illustrate, as Deena Aljuhani Abdulaziz writes in the catalogue published for this exhibition, “the effects of globalization on a rapidly evolving Middle East, this kind of art ultimately highlights a cross-cultural conversation that has been going on for centuries”.Some of the highlight pieces presented in this exhibition reference the well-known American sitcom first aired in 1965, I Dream of Jeannie. The show featured Barbara Eden as a 2,000-year-old genie, and Larry Hagman as an astronaut who becomes her master. For the purposes of the current exhibition the artist uses this popular media culture series to explore Arab and Middle Eastern identity representations in the west, and in the Middle East, in contemporary culture, and perceptions of the Arabs and of the Middle East, by the west. By doing so, it also discusses identity constructs the Arabs and Middle Eastern peoples adopt for themselves based on Western perceptions of their culture and identity. This is an exhibition about cultural dialogue and bridges between reality and perception, both of Western culture and Arab and Middle Eastern cultures in general. The artists will be in residency at KAS for 4 weeks and several dedicated workshops with Qatar based artists and the general public will be offered.
