The world hasn’t been closer as it is now, and the knowledge hasn’t been as fast developing and distinctive as it has become today. As a consequence, the world has now become like a large global village in which knowledge continues to build up every second. In this context, Culture had to play two rolls : to maintain its identity and to keep pace with modern developments . Without a doubt it is a difficult and sensitive equation. The Cultural Village Foundation is working on this equation through the vision of His Highness Hamad Bin Khalifa AlThani – Emir of Qatar , and in the context of the specific targets, which have been carefully planned as part of Qatar’s National Vision 2030.

Lightweeds
Nature is becoming rare in our daily life. In the way our urbanizing world is generally built and planned, our everyday surroundings have become perpetual and static through conditioned climates and 24 hour lighting. When unpredictable natural elements such as a lifting breeze,a sudden shower, or a setting sun are planned out of our surroundings, the timeline of our every day is lost.
A living digital organism growing on the walls and floors of an indoor space, that reacts to the actual nature of its location and reveals the character of aspace. The projected plant silhouettes are alive; from a digital seed that contains the genetical data of its family, they grow affected by actual measured rainfall and sunshine, move directly on actual wind, and throughout the day turn along with the sun. The plants are not pre-drawn or animated, but uniquely generated by the
software and the space they reside in. A lightweed consists of a several hundred parts that are independently linked to the sensors outside, creating a live generated, hyper-real motion. At the start of the day they are few, but as the space is used they pollinate from wall to wall and increase in amount. Because their seeds travel along with the direction of passing people, and make new plants grow on places towards where there is more traffic, they reveal the way the space is being used. Because the way the plants grow, behave, pollinate and die is completey defined by the space, they make up continuously evolving combinations that are never equal.Living plants that restore the natural timeline that a space has walled out.

Nja Mahdaoui is one of the most celebrated living contemporary artists and calligraphers in Tunisia. His work is internationally renowned, especially since winning the international competition for the external design of some of Gulf Air’s fleet to mark its 50th Anniversary.Mahdaoui considers himself ‘an explorer of signs’ and has been described as a ‘choreographer of letters’. His work is based on the shapes associated with Kufic script and Arabic letter forms, but he does not set out to write meaningful texts. Famous for his meticulous work in ink on parchment, Mahdaoui stresses the visual impact of his compositions, which he refers to as ‘calligrams’ (‘beautiful writing’). His beautifully stylised Arabic letters fall amidst row after row of minute inscriptions and intricate patterns, like a visual melody. Katara Galleries will be exhibiting some Arabic Calligraphic works as part of its 2012 Ramadan exhibition program.
Katara in coordination with Ministry of Islamic Affairs (Awqaf) will be hosting a series of Quran classes for boys and girls under 17years old. Separate classes will be arranged for boys and girls at Katara Big Mosque and Gold Mosque respectively.

A Matter of Time includes the brand-new Time clocks by Daniel Weil which are constructed from sleek nickel-plated brass and steel. All of the pieces speak of Weil’s fascination with technology and conceptual notions of time. “Objects like clocks are both prosaic and profound,” Weil says. “Prosaic because of their ubiquity in everyday life, profound because of the mysterious nature of time itself. Time can be reduced to hours, minutes, and seconds, just as a clock can be reduced to its component parts. This doesn’t explain time, but in a way simply exposes its mysterious essence.”
