Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

We have had an excellent start to 2020. We are fully staffed and are very happy with the new teachers, who have quickly settled in. Rachel Whitehouse leaves us at the end of week 3 for the rest of the term but we have a replacement from the Flying Squad in Perth, Catherine Curran, backfilling her and they will be on deck Monday morning. The upgrades to the school are progressing very well. Walls have been painted giving the place a fresh look. The upper quad has shade sails and new lawn. The lower quad is being paved. More is to come. We engaged the help of Mr Graeme Gordon as a Student Services Consultant whilst we advertise for a second Deputy to lead Student Services. Graeme is a Classroom Management Strategies expert. He is helping put things in place to improve behaviour and attendance and we are reaping the rewards already. There is a positive mood around the students. The Department of Education wants schools to adhere to the mantra: “every student, every classroom, everyday.” The focus is on classrooms first and we are doing exactly that. We will use evidence to drive decision-making, support the engagement of every student to provide every student with a successful pathway, build the capability of our staff and support teaching and learning excellence in every classroom. We need your support to make this happen. Regular attendance and positive behaviour of students is essential. We have a new teacher, Ms Jill Bosinger for the STaR class. She is doing an amazing job with a few disengaged students. Their behaviour and engagement is much improved. We also welcome Mr Craig Nattrass, Mr Paul Townsend, Miss Isabella Carsle, Mr Ben Rosenstreich. They have all settled into school very quickly. Our School Business Plan has five targets for Year 7 NAPLAN and five targets for Year 9 NAPLAN. Reading, writing, punctuation and grammar, spelling and numeracy. In 2019 we have exceeded 9 of them! Well done to the staff and students. Although it is early days our 90% and over attendance to date is at 67% regular, which is a 19% increase on Semester one 2019. Thank you to parents and carers for supporting your children in getting to school so they can have the best educational opportunities possible. Katanning SHS was the most improved school in the State for WACE achievement. Up 19.1%

Our median ATAR score doubled in 2019 from 2018. We had 3 ATAR students in 2018 and 2019 and in 2020 we have 8 in Year 12 and 15 in Year 11. Our results will NOT be published in the papers or league tables until we have 20 students doing ATAR. When you see schools with no ATAR in those tables it doesn't mean they don’t have ATAR students. It means they have less than 20. The percentage of WACE eligible students who passed OLNA increased.

ADMINISTRATION

Printing with PaperCut This year we have introduced PaperCut to monitor all printing and copying on site. PaperCut helps students and staff to monitor usage and balances remaining. Students have been allocated a $5 credit at the start of the year which equates to 125 single sided, black and white pages. Students have been advised via the Crier that additional credits can be purchased in $5 increments when/if required. Staff and students are increasingly using electronic resources such as CONNECT, to assist in our aim of reducing our printing footprint, costs and quantities. Thank you for your assistance and understanding of our endeavours to reduce our reliance and usage on paper.

The P&C is working effectively with the school to ensure Country Week fundraising is happening. It is also doing a fantastic job of running the Senior School Ball. Thank you from all of us. Not long to go for the Ball now! The Board works closely with the school to identify opportunities to link with the community and promote the school. We have already had one Strategic Planning group meeting last week to get things moving for 2020. The Board met on Thursday 20 February in the Conference Room at the school. New members Jo Tester, Habibah Mohd Sarip and Jodie Collins were welcomed. The school has just had its first half page advertorial in the Great Southern Herald. I look forward to more this year. Huge thank you to Renae Garrity and Sherryl Chilcott for their work in making this happen. Carolyn Cook Principal

some bike riding and hiking. I also love to read lots of science fiction and fantasy novels. Definitely, no Mills and Boon for me. Hi! my name is Paul Townsend. I have come down from Perth where I taught English, HASS and Japanese at a number of schools over the past seven year period. Prior to 2012 I lived in Japan for 16 years where I taught English. My interests include watching Rugby Union, Soccer and Reading Novels. I also enjoy practicing Japanese calligraphy. I look forward to teaching English and Career Education at Katanning SHS, helping students and getting to know the local Community. My name is Ben Rosenstreich, this is my second year of teaching after graduating from Notre Dame University in December of 2018. I spent the first half of 2019 taking relief in Northam, before getting a contract for the last 2 terms of the year at Wagin District High School. I will be taking predominantly Physical education and Health classes here at Katanning SHS. I love AFL (go Eagles!) and follow the LA Angels, in the American Major League Baseball. My name is Jill Bossinga. My husband and I have come to Katanning SHS after teaching at Roebourne DHS for 7 and 1/2 years looking for a southern change. I have done lots of exciting things in my life leading up to this point. From setting up HACC service in Bunbury and co-parenting 2 young adults with severe disabilities, the co-ordinator for the HACC day respite centre in Broome and coordinating HACC services in Perth. We were Caretakers of Woody Island Tourist facilities and infrastructure for 6 months and have worked in Residential Colleges in Narrogin, Broome and Esperance. We look forward to getting to know people in the Katanning community. Hi all, I am Isabella Carlse, but also get called Tibbie. I am excited to commence my third year of teaching at KSHS. Before Katanning, I worked and lived in Corrigin as a Science and English teacher. My family is from Narrogin so I am passionate about teaching in country schools as I attended one myself. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone in the school and wider community this year. My name is Rrahim Cervoj. I was a late comer to teaching: started in 2010 after changing careers. I have worked at Boddington & Wagin District High School, Narrogin and Katanning Senior High Schools. I moved to Katanning in 2013 and worked at the High School teaching Information Technology. I am now back at Katanning Senior High School in 2020 I find a little déjà vu teaching Digital Technology. I have a passion for technology and what it can bring to people’s lives. My name is Craig Nattrass and I am really looking forward to joining the teaching staff at Katanning Senior High School as a Design and Technology Teacher. I bring to the role an extensive trade background and more than twenty-six years of experience in various industries, including being a qualified boiler maker and sheet metal fabricator, and qualified trainer and assessor. I have strong community values and have spent a combined ten years working with Rockingham 2nd Fire and Rescue, Sea Search and Rescue and the State Emergency Service. I was a bit of ratbag during my own school years but life sorted me out. I have now come full circle and have spent the last eight years working in various roles in the education sector, spurred on by my desire to support young people in discovering their purpose and place in the world. A few fun facts:

I am married to an amazing woman (aiming for brownie points!) and I

am the proud father of four great kids aged 12-19.

My wife and kids tease me that I like my coffee weak and lukewarm

and that I have more hair on my face than on my head.

My favourite movie is Wild Hogs.

When I’m not working, I enjoy four-wheel driving, camping, fishing, shooting and riding my

motorbike.

I’m looking forward to getting to know people and settling in to the community of Katanning.

SCHOOL BALL

On behalf of the School Ball Committee we would like to invite our Year 10, 11 and 12 students to attend this year’s annual Senior School Ball to be held on Saturday the 28th of March at the Pioneer Room at the Katanning Recreation Centre. All senior students with their Good Standing are invited to attend for and night of fun and celebration. The theme of this year’s ball is ‘Winter Wonderland’, and the price of your ticket covers your dinner, des-sert, ‘mocktails’ and soft drinks, the hall decorations, the hall hire, the hire of our very own ‘DJ Gino’, (who was very popular last year!) and the hire of the photographer. Year 11 and 12 students who would like to invite an external partner should see Ms. Collins in the English Department for their forms, and should submit them by 6 March 2020. We hope this year the ball will be a magical night as we celebrate the final year of high school for our Year 12s and come together for a night to remember. Please see Ms. Collins if you need forms or have any other queries. Tickets will go on sale soon from Mrs. Allen in the library. A notice will go in the Crier to let you know when they are ready. The cost of each ticket will be $45. We hope to see you there!

STUDENT SERVICES

Congratulations to those students who are regularly attending school. They are giving themselves the best opportunity to succeed. The following table is colour-coded to reflect the Department of Education’s rating system that school’s use to monitor student attendance at school: <60% Severely at risk attendance 60-80% Moderately at risk attendance 80-90% Indicated at risk attendance 90% or greater Regular attendance 2019 Attendance Data

There is much room for improvement in 2020, with the attendance data for three year levels in the moderately at risk attendance category, and three year levels in the indicated at risk attendance category. There are no year levels which fall into the regular attendance category, and the school’s overall attendance data is in the moderately at risk attendance category, meaning students average more than one day absent from school per week. Top Attenders in 2019 At the end of Term 4 2019, the student services team recognised those students who had achieved 97% and above attendance for all of 2019. Each student received a certificate at the final assembly with one student being awarded a voucher for 100% attendance for the year. Congratulations to those students with exceptional attendance for 2019:

Those students who achieved 100% attendance for Term 4 were also recognised. Each student received a certificate at the final assembly. Congratulations to those students with 100% attendance for Term 4 2019:

School Absence Process The school’s absence monitoring process is: 1) Student is marked absent from their period 1 class – a text message is sent home informing parents/

caregivers. It is the class teacher who marks the roll, so sometimes there are issues with a student being marked absent if they haven’t arrived at class, or if there is a relief teacher.

2) Weekly advocacy class – teacher follows up with student on their period and full day absences for the previous week. Students are either given an attendance variation slip to take to their teacher if they were incorrectly marked which is then submitted to the front office for amending, or a full day attendance slip to take home for parents/caregivers to complete which is then submitted to the front office for amending. Parents/caregivers may also inform the school of those flagged absences via the ways listed below.

3) No communication after eight days following a period or full day absence – a text message is sent home reminding parents/caregivers that a reason is required.

4) No communication after four weeks following a period or full day absence – student is marked as an unacceptable reason for being absent from school which affects their attendance and good standing.

5) Further interventions, such as phone calls, letters, home visits and attendance meetings, may be enacted for students with irregular attendance.

Attendance Incentives A number of initiatives are in place to recognise those students with good attendance:

Certificates are presented to students with 100% attendance at the first assembly after a term finishes (or at the final assembly in Term 4). One student from each year group is randomly selected to win a voucher.

Students with regular attendance (90% or greater) each term are recognised with a certificate that is presented in their Advocacy class and a text message is sent to parents/caregivers to inform them of their child’s achievement.

Students with 97% or greater attendance over the year are acknowledged at the final assembly for the year. Vouchers are presented to students with 100% over the year.

Students with 90% or greater attendance maintain their Good Standing for the attendance component. If students maintain their good standing in all areas (attendance, behaviour, academic and uniform), they are eligible to participate in the termly good standing reward.

Chaplains Chat:

How Healthy Choices Grow Healthy Children As parents we help create our child/s future. The patterns children establish early in life (their character) they will live out later. Character refers to a person’s ability or inability, his/her moral makeup, his functioning in relationships, and how he does tasks and caries them out in certain situations. When he needs to perform how will he meet those demands? Can he love? Can he be responsible? Can he have empathy for others? Can he develop his talents? Can he solve his problems? Can he deal with failure? Character is always developed in relationship and we can’t overestimate the parenting role in developing this character.

A wise man once said ‘train a child in the way they should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it’.

If we were to be perfectly honest with ourselves, we would agree that brokenness in character is caused by a lack of boundaries and adults with boundary problems have not developed those problems as grown-ups. We have learned the following boundary problems as youngsters ourselves.

Inability to say no to hurtful people or set limits on hurtful behaviours from others.

Inabilities to say no to their own destructive impulses.

Inabilities to hear from others and respect their limits.

Taking responsibility for other people’s lives.

Ability to be easily manipulated or controlled.

Experiencing life as a victim instead of living it purposefully with a feeling of self-control.

Disorganisation and lack of follow-through.

Struggles with intimacy and maintaining closeness with others.

Tendency to be attracted to irresponsible or hurtful people and then try to ‘fix’ them

Inability to be honest with those they are close to.

Inability to delay gratification and accomplish goals and tasks.

Addictions and compulsions.

Children are not born with boundaries. 1. What character traits have served you well in your adult years? What do you remember your

parents and other significant adults doing to encourage those traits? 2. From the list of boundary problem’s, which of them, if any, have been problems for you during your

adult years? 3. What seeds for these out-of-control patterns in your adult life do you see as you look back on your

childhood?

Taken from ‘Boundaries with Kids’ Workbook by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend.

To maintain Good Standing at Katanning Senior High School students must have above 90% attendance, be in correct school uniform as well as follow the academic and behaviour expectations of our school.

At the end of last year, the students who maintained their Good Standing for the whole year were rewarded with an excursion to the newly refurbished All Ages Playground. The Year 9 and 10 students went on Tuesday, while the Year 7 and 8s went on Wednesday.

Despite the heat, all the student who went had a great time trying all the equipment, playing football, chilling in the shade and enjoying a sausage sizzle.

Student Services would like to sincerely thank Troy and Kym Hamon who kindly donated their bus services for the two days.

Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

The start of the new year has seen a change in the school’s student leaders and leadership group structure. This year, two students will represent their peers in each year level, plus the two school captains who will lead the student leaders. In previous years, it has been four students (one per house) per year group plus the two school captains. During Term 4, students were invited to nominate if they were interested in becoming a student leader for 2020. Students and staff then voted on those students via elections which replicated Australia’s voting process (ballot paper, individual polling booth, polling officers etc). The successful nominees were announced at the final assembly in Term 4 2019. We would like to acknowledge the work of the out-going 2019 student leaders who did a great job in raising the profile of the student leadership group, both in and out of the school through their organisation and attendance at various events and services. Thank you to the student leadership group in 2019 that consisted of: N.B. Student Leaders who left the school, were not replaced. Congratulations to the elected student leaders for 2020: Year 7 student leaders will be elected at the end of this term to give students an opportunity to meet their new peers and choose leaders who will represent them well. We look forward to sharing information in coming newsletters on what the student leadership group has been doing around the school and community. Mrs Jodie Collins has stepped down as the Teacher Coordinator of the Student Leadership Group. We would like to welcome Miss Isabella Carlse who is eager to take on the role.

Students in Year 11 & 12 have commenced their placements for 2020 in Week 2, with 35 students out and working in Katanning and surrounding businesses for Workplace Learning. We also have eight students completing School Based Traineeships, and one student who has left us for a full time Apprenticeship with his 2019 WPL Employer. This year the bulk of the placements are based around community services, agriculture and automotive, with students completing Certificate II in Automotive and Certificate II in Engineering at the Trade Skills Centre at Katanning Senior High School, and Certificate II Community Services (Child Care) and Certificate III Education Support

at South Regional Tafe. Congratulations to Deakan Morton for achieving his goal and gaining an Apprenticeship after completing a massive 393 hours of WPL in 2019. BUSH RANGER CADETS

Bush Ranger Cadets is an organisation run by Cadets WA and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, which aims to give all secondary-school-aged youth the opportunity to participate in personal development training that provides practical life skills, develops leadership, teamwork and initiative skills, fosters qualities of community responsibility and service. At Katanning SHS we meet on Tuesday afternoons from 3:10pm – 5:15pm for a range of activities including gardening, orienteering, first aid, cooking, bush craft, recycling, nature surveys, planting trees, soil sampling, hikes, drill, bike riding, preparing for camps, swimming and much more. We also offer a weekend camp once a term. Bush Ranger Cadets is a free program open to all high school aged students, so everyone is welcome to give it a go. For information and permission forms please contact the school office. Miss Sarah Watson, Unit Leader.

It has been a busy start to the year for Inclusive Learning, with unpacking and reorganizing of the room dominating the first week as we have had brand new ceilings and lights refurbished. This year we welcome Tiare and Hayley to Room 23. We are delighted to see how well the Year 7 students have settled into high school. As we all know, transitioning from primary to high school can be overwhelming and scary but it’s wonderful to see the older students being positive role models and helping out “the new kids on the block”. Well done guys! Inclusive Learning is hands on and life skills based. Our student focused ASDAN program encourages personal and social development. Currently students have been cooking up a storm in the kitchen by learning how to make pizza from scratch. Students are able to see, touch, feel and of course taste the final product! We definitely have some future Master Chef’s in the making! We have also started back in our garden. Our aim is to get our herb and vegetable garden up and running which we will be able to harvest the fresh produce to use on our pizzas. Larry, along with the other students are in the progress of constructing a Mia-Mia, an Aboriginal shelter for cultural awareness. Inclusive Learning Team

TECHNOLOGIES

A busy start to the year has seen our students get straight back into hands-on projects. All students are doing a great job in Technologies. In Home Economics, the Year 7 students have settled in well to their Food and Fibre class, taking responsibility in managing themselves and their new equipment. They have practiced the chopping skills and enjoyed eating their fruit salad. The Year 8 Food and Fibre students are having a real sewing bee, using sewing machines and working towards their “L-Plates” in sewing. Important coordination skills and an understanding of basic sewing techniques are developed as part of the curriculum.

Year 9 Food and Fibre group are refreshing their cooking, cleaning and group work skills and produced delicious zucchini fritters and chocolate slice. Students are learning how to read the food labels.

Year 10 Food and Fibre group has done revision of the sewing machine skills and produced magnificent pin cushions. They are looking forwards to learn cross stitch embroidery skill.

Year 11 Food Science and Technology students have shown great confidence and knowledge in the variety of mise-en-place and precision cutting skills. They are well aware of processing techniques to ensure that safe food handling practices prevent food contamination.

Year 12 Textile class students have had a good introduction to their assessment outline and course content. They have been encouraged to continue using their motivation in completing tasks, and have been made aware of the requirements of the externally set task. They have been busy in designing a recycling project and how the technology process works to design a project. Year 12 Food Science and Technology students have started learning about micro-nutrients, their role in the body, and the effects the under consumption of nutrients has on the body. They have been practicing the functional properties of food and have learnt what emulsification is and made scrumptious Eggs Benedict.

We thank our very caring gardeners to provide us organic zucchinis. So far we have used our gardens zucchinis to make; zucchini fritters, zucchini & ham slice, and zucchini & walnut cup cakes. Within our Digital Technologies class students have been examining the different hardware components of a computer, physically examining CPU’s, RAM and hard drives. They have also started to get a better understanding of how our school computer network functions and learning to tether devices to mobile network.

Design and Technologies have had a busy start to the year in with the Year 9s working on a pencil box with an acrylic lid and most of the Year 7s

have finished their cheese boards. All year levels this year will have a focus on the Design process. Following this process from initial idea, through research, concept development to actual project production will give the students a better appreciation of the work they produce.

Welcome to Science 2020, a great year for Vision (according to our Australian of the Year 2020, Dr James Muecke AM. Eye surgeon and blindness prevention pioneer.) We welcome our new Year 7 students and look forward to guiding their development as scientists over the coming years. We have a very welcome addition to our Science team in Miss Tibbie Carlse who has taken on classes in years 7 – 11, piloting the new addition of Integrated Science to our Upper School offerings. Ms WATSON and I are enjoying our separate Year 11

and Year 12 ATAR classes in Chemistry and Human Biology while Mrs Whitehouse has taken on the Science/Maths position teaching in both learning areas. We wish Mrs Whitehouse a pleasant leave for the remainder of this term and look forward to welcoming her back in Term 2. So a great year planned for STEM……. Julie Brown Learning Area Manager

ROOM 21 ACTIVITIES Last Tuesday, Mrs Kerin from the Science Department came to work with the boys on some fun Science activities. They looked at how the colours from M & Ms bled colour in a very specific way, they looked at how dropping a few drops of food colour into milk changes rapidly when a small amount of dish washing liquid is added and finally they discovered that using Skittles instead didn’t make such an impressive pattern. Every day the boys like to cook something – it can be as simple as pancakes or ham and cheese toasties to something a bit more challenging like sushi and making a zucchini slice using a zucchini grown in the school garden.

We have had a great start to the term with 26 boys maintaining 100% attendance for the first week. Our top attenders enjoyed tacos prepared by Larry Woods and Shaun Besgrove and went into a raffle for their efforts. Thank you to Mrs Cook for drawing the raffle and congratulation to Kyle Penny who won a $20 Sports Power voucher.

We have had a good start to our training sessions for the year with a number of boys rising early to engage in fitness and swimming. We have also been enjoying basketball on Monday afternoons. The Year 7-9 Advocacy class played a game of football in preparation for the Southern Challenge in March. It was great to see some of the skill on show. Hopefully we can defend the title from last year.

The Year 10s learnt a valuable lesson on vehicle maintenance and had a visit from Nui Andrews who graduated in 2018. He spoke to the Year 10s about his journey finishing school and moving into the mining industry. Finally, our Year 7s travelled to Albany for a Clontarf Induction. The poor weather did not dampen the boy’s spirits who engage well in team building activities. The boys understanding of the pillars and values of Clontarf was impressive and we look forward to watching them grow over the next six years.

WA Meningococcal W immunisation program. The 2020 WA Meningococcal W immunisation program will be offered free to all year 10 students commencing term 1. Consent forms will be sent home with all year 10 students. The Meningococcal W immunisation program has been launched in response to the increase in meningococcal W infection. Some of the highest rates of meningococcal carriage and illness occur among 15-19 year olds. Once infected, this age group can transmit bacteria to people who are at an increased risk of infection, including young children. It is expected that providing the meningococcal W (Men W) vaccine to this group will reduce the spread of this potentially life threatening infection within the WA community. Parents/legal guardians are asked to complete and sign the consent forms and return them to the school. Please return form whether you consent or do not consent to your child receiving the vaccination. If you do not receive a vaccination consent form from your child, please ask at the school office for one. If you have any queries regarding the program please contact Sharon Muir- School Nurse on 9891 1100. Sharon Muir School Nurse
