Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

Term 4 has been another incredibly busy and productive term, as you will see in the coming pages of this newsletter. I congratulate all students for their achievements and thank all staff for supporting students in their endeavours. Parents are reminded that Semester 2 reports for Years 7 to 10 will be sent home with the students on Thursday 14 December. Year 11 reports can be collected from the front office. Any reports not collected will be mailed home. Having seen quite a few reports at the time of writing it is pleasing to note so many successful students. There is however, a small number who will be, or should be, disappointed with their results. In almost every case this is the consequence of not applying themselves, or not completing their assignment work or not attending school regularly. If your child has under-achieved in their results for 2017, please have a look at the percentage attendance figure shown on the last page of the report. If the attendance is less than 90%, not only is your child attending school less regularly on average than their fellow students but they are also placing themselves at risk of underachieving. The overall Katanning SHS attendance of 83.6% in 2017 is below the state average of 87.8%. Whilst we have many students who attend more than 90% there are still a significant number of students who are not regularly in class. Success at school and attendance go hand in hand so please look at what you can do as a parent or carer to get your child to school for an average of at least 90% of the year in 2018. I believe that their performance will improve if they attend and complete their work. Funding is provided to the school each year through the Student Centred Funding Model. This funding meets the needs of our staffing and operational budgets and is based on our audited February student enrolment census data. Therefore it is important that all students attend school from Wednesday 31 January 2018. We welcome our new parent representatives Mrs Sian Anyon and Mr Nathan Marwick as well as our new staff representative Ms Steed to the Katanning SHS School Board. I would like to thank all Board members for their contribution throughout 2017. In particular, thank you to our retiring Board members Mrs Reeves, Mr Miniter and Ms Mohd Sarip for their efforts during the past few years. On behalf of our students and the wider community, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff for their outstanding efforts throughout 2017. In particular, thank you to our retiring teachers Mr Sandwell and Mrs van Niekerk and also to Ms Clements, Mr Harris, Ms D’Souza, Ms Delves, Ms Hegney and Mr Prosser who will be leaving Katanning. We wish them well in their new endeavours. We also wish Mrs Brown fun and relaxation while on long service leave for Term 1, 2018. I look forward to returning as Principal for the beginning of 2018, especially to welcome all our new Year 7 students and catching up with many of the existing parents and students of Katanning SHS. 2018 promises to be another very exciting

year so until then I wish all students, staff

and their families a wonderful festive

season and I look forward to seeing

everyone return safely for the beginning of

the next school year.

IMPORTANT - Change affecting ALL STUDENT Office 365 (webmail) email accounts

If students would like to keep any emails or attachments from their portal webmail, please forward, download or back them up before Friday 14 December. You can save information to an alternate personal email account or backup on to a usb stick. If visiting the school to attend to this matter, please sign in at front reception.

Advice received from the Department of Education Changes to student email accounts are planned over the summer holiday period. All student accounts have to be moved to take full advantage of the extensive collaboration features of Office 365. Unfortunately this requires accounts to be terminated in one place before they can be recreated in the new environment so that students can retain the same email addresses and login details.

This change will result in the loss of all stored data in current student online accounts including files, emails, attachments and contacts. Existing accounts will not be accessible over the summer holidays, starting from 14 December 2017. Please advise your students to back up any data they wish to keep, including contacts, emails and files from their Department student accounts before that date.

The new student email accounts will be available for student use at the start of the 2018 school year, with the existing account names, email addresses and passwords.

RAPT stands for Respect, Achievement, Perseverance and Tolerance. This award is handed out at the end of every term and is chosen by the Teaching staff. 2017 has been a very eventful year for staff and students in the Education Support Unit. Like all the terms this year Term 4 has flown by in a blink of an eye.

These past two weeks students have been preparing and planning a special morning tea for their parents to thank them for their support throughout the year. Students had a brainstorming session on what they were going to cook and wrote down a list of items needed for a morning tea. Once all the planning was completed, the fun begins!

First up Colt, Larry, Mrs Whiteaker and Miss Butler went to Woolworths for a shopping expedition. Larry and Colt were responsible for buying a long list of groceries. Once everything was ticked off the list we headed to the self-service checkout where Larry and Colt took turns scanning items… Shopping is hard work but someone has to do it!

Our cooking lessons in the ESU are versatile and adaptable, the activity is used to teach a range of skills including maths and problem solving. Students learn how to follow a recipe; identify and learn how to use cooking utensils correctly but most importantly students learn kitchen safety.

This week they baked and decorated a test batch of gingerbread men to hand out to their parents for morning tea. After a taste test students were very pleased with the end results. We are proud of the progress our students are showing, it is very rewarding to see them smile with pride when they have accomplished an individual achievement. Well done everyone!

This term we have been keeping busy with several different projects, a footy match and working on our attendance.

The year 7’s have been working hard on a mural that used cut outs of their hands that they then designed in their own unique way, these were all put together to create colourful petals. The girl’s motto stated – “We are all unique and beautiful, but together we are a masterpiece”.

The years 8’s have each been working on a cut out of a jigsaw piece that showcases their likes and individuality. Their motto states – “we are all wonderfully different, but in this room we all fit together”.

The year 9’s have been spending time discussing confidence and self-esteem and how having the right sort of confidence in themselves will enable them to feel competent in areas they consider important and to not take other peoples negative impressions on them too seriously. The girls have created a TBH wall where they have write affirmations to each other which they can come and read if they are finding the day hard.

The year 10’s have been creating profile poster of themselves, these contained information that is important to each of them and major events in their lives that has helped to build the person they are today.

Just recently we have had a discussion on ways to be better people and help others in our community. The girls have decided they would like to create something to give to the primary schools as this will not only benefit the schools but also help to generate a good name for the DSG participants and encourage younger students to want to join the program. We have been busy making playdough, kinetic sand and sensory calm down bottles which will be bundled up in a Christmas themed box and presented to the children.

We were very fortunate to be involved in a football match during week 7 against the DSG participants from Yule Brook College. We took 21 girls over to Williams for the game, as this was half way for both schools. Though it was scorching hot, the Katanning girls gave it all they had and came home with a win. To say we are super proud of the girls is an understatement, their commitment, behaviour and support for one another was awesome. Thanks to Robbie Miniter for driving the girls over, umpiring and supporting them so well.

Lastly Jasmine and I have been pushing attendance this term. We have a 100% attendance chart on the wall which enables 5 girls per week to receive a Wirrpanda bag full of essential items. So far this term we have happily given away 17 bags.

Hi everyone just a little update on what the cadets and leaders have been up to this term. We have been focusing a lot of our time on the garden; getting everything ready for a bumper crop of vegies and melons. Cadets have been finishing off the garden beds with seedlings. We are now growing beans, kale, cucumber, zucchini, watermelon, rockmelon, strawberries, corn, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach and beetroot. We have also planted carrot seeds and flowers and have transplanted some of our succulents and other plants into bigger pots ready for the growing season. Now we sit back, feed and water and watch them grow. We have also worked on the kayaks with the assistance of Mr McPhee and taken a walk around the race course to find some geocaches. We are all looking forward to our last camp for the year to Bremer Bay which we will report on next newsletter. Terrie Hiddlestone Bush Ranger Leader

This term all year 10 students have completed the Core of Life program. The sessions were run by the school nurse, Sharon Muir and an assistant from the Aboriginal Health Clinic, Deb Julius. This program is designed to educate students about the positive and negative behaviours during pregnancy; as well as, improve their understanding of the actual process of giving birth. During the sessions the students experience a power point presentation that details real people’s experiences, role playing activities and a video of a woman giving birth. Team HPE

HEALTH - CORE OF LIFE

A dedicated team of 22 athletes across years 7 to 10 attended the CGSSSSA Interschool Athletics

carnival in Albany in week 9 of Term 4. With strong performances and a number of records broken at

the school athletics carnival weeks earlier, the team was confident in their abilities heading into the day.

Competing against 6 schools for the B division championship, the HPE department were extremely

impressed with the team’s commitment, enthusiasm and athleticism. With student numbers up from

previous years, the relatively small team was able to field nearly all events across the day.

There was individual brilliance demonstrated on the day, with three medals awarded to Katanning SHS

students. Imogen Van Zyl, the only year 9 girl representing KSHS achieved runner up champion girl,

while James Cronin and Codie Mills-Durack achieved Champion Boy in years 9 and 8 respectively. The

HPE department are keen to witness the improvement in a number of our athletes as a result of their

acceptance into the LEAD program in 2018. Interschool Athletics team members Ashlea Tester,

Jaymee-Lee Quarmby, Raza Rahim Abdul, Codie Mills-Durack, James Cronin, Bowen Reeves and

Imogen Van Zyl are some of the students accepted into the LEAD program in 2018.

2017 has been a great year for Workplace Learning. With 55 students participating in placements with over 49 employers, a total of over 6,476 hours in the workplace was completed! Six of our Year 11 students received School Based Traineeships this year with their Workplace Learning employer, which is a fantastic effort. We also had two students progress to Apprenticeships with their employers. A big congratulations to Jorja Whiteaker who has commenced a Hairdressing Apprenticeship with Valerie Salon and Ashley Evans who is completing an Electrical Apprenticeship with Black Stump Electrical. Our annual Employer Breakfast was held at the Trade Training Centre this year, which was a great opportunity to showcase our wonderful facilities and the work of Mr Glenn Adams and his students. We had 30 guests in attendance, and it was wonderful to see some new faces. All feedback from employers has been positive, and with such a diverse range of opportunities on offer our students really are spoilt for choice. A big Thank You to everyone who has been involved in the Workplace Learning program for 2017, it

has been a wonderful year and the students should be proud of their achievements.

Poor Ms Rego, she has been very busy this term preparing her Year 8 and 10 ACE English classes for presentations to parents and staff. All of the presentations were the result of hard work on the part of the students and their teacher Ms Rego and they should all be congratulated for their efforts. Thank you very much to the parents and staff who attended. Year 8 Ms Rego’s Year 8 ACE English class have been studying Romeo & Juliet on and off all year. They participated in a half day drama workshop to get the gist of the story, a Master class run by a Bell Shakespeare employee to delve a little deeper, they watched a performance of Romeo & Juliet: Rewind by Bell Shakespeare, studied the whole play as part of their rigorous English curriculum and it culminated in a very impressive assessment task. Students were placed into groups and then given an Act from the play to recreate in their own way. They wrote their own scripts and rehearsed like crazy. We had fun watching them out and about around the school, all dressed up and practising. Students filmed their adaptations of the story and then used iMovie to edit and embellish their production. Then, on Thursday 23 November, they presented these edited videos to 26 parents and teachers. Wow! They were amazing! The students understanding of the story was clearly evident; one group used the analogy of Apple v LG to represent the warring Montague and Capulet families; another used our current context and had West Coast Eagles fans v Fremantle Dockers fans. Also very impressive was the clever editing; one group had a beginning like the Star Wars films where the information goes up the screen and fades into the distance and another created a trailer for their film. Year 10 On Wednesday 6 December, the Year 10 ACE English class held panel discussions in the library. The topic they were given was very broad: Social issues faced by teenagers. Each group refined this further and some topics discusses were: broken homes, stress and equality. The students had clearly researched the topic they chose, quoting statistics and facts to support their opinion. They had also practised the protocols of panel discussion thoroughly as each group had a moderator who guided the discussion and panel members who each spoke on various parts of the topics. The topics discussed were often quite sensitive; however some students were courageous enough to share their personal experiences on the topic. A personal anecdote is a powerful persuasive technique that allows the audience to empathise with the speaker. A particular note that I took away from the discussions, was that students often feel stressed about their ability to live up to their parents’ expectations of them. We discussed that often students don’t feel confident to speak to parents about what they are really interested in and what they would prefer to do during and after school. It inspired me to initiate the conversation with my kids and to keep an open mind. Thank you for your insights Year 10 ACE English students! Mrs Anderson - ACE Coordinator

Online Safety - how to keep your child safe online Important messages for parents about keeping your kids safe as we as we approach the long Christmas holiday break. Protecting your children from harm is just as important online as it is in the real world. As a parent or carer, you can play an important role in helping children have safe and positive experiences online. The internet offers an exciting world of experiences for children and the whole family. It can be entertaining, educational and rewarding. However, using the internet also involves risks and challenges. Children might be exposed to content that is sexually explicit, violent, prohibited or even illegal. They may also experience cyber bullying or be at risk from contact by strangers. Children may - unknowingly or deliberately - share personal information without realising they may be subject to identity theft, or that they are leaving behind content that might not reflect well on them in the future. By taking an active role in talking with your kids about the risks and answering their questions or concerns about something that they find on the Internet you can help them stay safer online. For more information on keeping your children safe online try the following website:

iParent is an online resource developed by the Office of the Children’s

Water safety In Australia, drowning is the number one cause of death for children under five. To keep your children safe around water:

Always stay with your children and watch carefully when they are near water, even if they can

swim.

Teach your children about water safety and make sure they learn how to swim.

Have the whole family learn first aid.

If you have a pool have it fenced with self-closing gates.

Never leave them alone in the bath.

The Education Department offers low-cost VacSwim programs for school aged children. For more information on swimming lessons during summer via VacSwim go to www.det.wa.edu.au/curriculumsupport/swimming/detcms/portal/ and for water safety tips see www.lifesavingwa.com.au .

Bushfire Warning Levels During a bushfire, DFES under instruction from the Shire and the Department of Parks and Wildlife issue community alerts and warnings for bushfires that threaten lives and property. They are issued once fire fighters have arrived at the scene and determine that there is a threat or potential threat to the community. Understanding the Bushfire Warning System is extremely important in helping you and your family to stay alert and informed when a bushfire starts. The Bushfire Warning System operates using four levels of warnings.

These levels change to reflect the increasing risk to your life or property and decreasing amount of time before the fire arrives. Know the warnings and stay alert when a bushfire starts. Do not wait and see what happens, this could be deadly. For more information about Bushfire Warnings: read the Bushfire Warnings: What should you do? information sheet and visit www.dfes.wa.gov.au

In 2017 the school was put back on the Bushfire Zone Register and therefore must have a plan should the school be threatened by bushfire. If this did occur the school may be required to close for the day that a catastrophic Fire Danger Rating (FDR) is declared for the Shire of Katanning including the town. If a closure is to take place letters will be sent home with students as well as an alert on the SMS system and school website.

If such a situation occurs parents should monitor local media for current information, check the DFES website www.dfes.wa.gov.au or call 13 DFES (13 33 37). Alternatively contact the school on 9821 9800 or the Wheatbelt Education Regional Office on 9622 0200. If you have any questions regarding the Bushfire Plan please contact the school via email [email protected] or phone 9821 9800.
