The book is divided into 4 well-organizedparts. The first covers in easy-to-understand lan-guage the complete anatomy of the mouth andstrategies for daily care, including brushing, floss-ing, rinsing, and tongue scraping. And the con-nection between inflammation in the mouth andinflammation in other areas of the body.

In the second part of the book, the authors

describe dental issues related to each stage of life,from pregnancy to childhood to old age, as wellas a chapter on tooth loss, bridges, implants, anddentures. As a parent, I was enthralled with thesection on teething, thumb sucking, and recom-mendations for growing up with healthy teeth.The chapters on tooth decay and gum diseasewere especially eye-opening. The authors alsocover the dental and oral effects of many commonconditions, such as acid reflux, diabetes, osteo-porosis, and stress.

The third part, as I mentioned before, is theherbal materia medica for the mouth. I alreadywas aware that sage is known for its oral health-giving properties, but I was fascinated to discov-er that many herbs I was already quite familiarwith (bee balm, calendula, echinacea, lavender,and yarrow to name a few) are also used in den-tal herbalism. For those do-it-yourselfers, this isthe section that includes recipes for teas, tinc-tures, compresses, rinses, toothpastes, and toothpowders. The authors also explain how to use a“chew stick” for oral cleaning and health, whichI can’t wait to try.

The fourth part covers food, drinks, snacks,and other issues that interfere with the health of

your teeth and mouth. This part includes a chap-ter (“The Mouth as a Microcosm of the Body”) oncurrent issues in dental health, which coversmore controversial topics such as the use of flu-oride, sodium lauryl sulfate, or triclosan in oralhealth products and the effects of the mercu-

Kale, Stand Up• Kale, Yam and Quinoa Salad• Creamed kale with Chickpeas

Kale is a part of the cruciferous vegetablefamily, which includes cabbage, broccoli, cau-liflower, Brussels sprouts, and bok choy. Thisimportant group of vegetables all contain dis-ease fighting phytochemicals, vitamins, miner-als, and fiber. Kale in particular has high levelsof sulforaphane, a unique compound thatboosts the immune system, increases detoxifi-cation, and allows the body to eliminate harm-ful compounds. The polyphenol antioxidantcontent in kale is higher than any other crucif-erous vegetable, is rich in enzymes, and hasantibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity.

Kale provides special cholesterol-loweringbenefits when cooked. The fiber in kale bindswith bile acids in your digestive tract, makingit easier for bile acids to be excreted resultingin lowering of cholesterol levels. Your liverneeds cholesterol to make bile acids, special-ized molecules that emulsify fat to aid in itsdigestion, absorption, and excretion. Whenfats are consumed, bile acids are released fromyour gallbladder into your intestine and thefiber-related nutrients in the kale bind withsome of the bile acids and are later excreted.When this happens the liver replaces the lostbile acids by utilizing your cholesterol supply,and lowering your cholesterol levels.

The carotenoid compound lutein is especial-ly abundant in kale and provides cardiovascu-lar benefits also by lowering cholesterol.

Kale is especially rich in complex glucosino-late compounds that induce cancer-destroyingenzymes and inhibits carcinogenesis. Italianscientists demonstrated that kale reduces therisk of many types of cancers and helps supportthe detoxification system of the body. It con-tains more than 45 flavonoids with quercetinheading the list providing both antioxidant andanti-inflammatory benefits.

Kale also contains a high quantity of theimportant and often over looked vitamin K. Italso is full of zeaxanthin carotenoid, and hasan abundance of vitamins and minerals includ-ing vitamins A, and C.

There are many types of kales, which can beclassified, by leaf type.

Curly-leaved or Scots Kale, plain-leavedkale with a longer and narrow leaf, rape kalewith a broad curly leaf, crossed varieties thatare a combination of plain and curly-leavedkale, Jersey kale or cow cabbage which is verytall and cavolo nero also known as black cab-bage, Tuscan kale, Lacinato, or dinosaur kale.This hearty vegetable grows best in cooler cli-mates and can be harvested through the winterafter the frost and often found under snow.

Enjoy kale boi led,steamed, stir-fried, and ifyoung and tender in salad oron a sandwich. And rememberto save the liquid it’s cooked in andenjoy a little warm broth. While making dinner trywith some added lemon juice or umeboshi vinegar.

KALE, YAM ANDQUINOA SALAD

Lovely salad with a variety of flavors andtexture and it’s gluten-free!.

2 yams1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil2 cloves garlic, minced1/2 teaspoon oregano1/2 chipotle powder1/2 teaspoon sea salt, more as needed1/2 cup quinoa1/2cup filtered water1 bay leaf3 cups kale or other hearty greens,1/2 cup raisins1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar3 tablespoons golden balsamic vinegar1 small shallot, minced1 tablespoon grain mustardSea Salt and pepper to taste

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.2. Cut yams into small cubes. Place in bowl

and toss with olive oil, garlic, oregano, chipo-tle powder and salt. Place on a baking sheet orpie plate and bake in oven about 30 minutesuntil tender. Turn once halfway through. (Thispart can be done a day ahead of time.)

3. Bring quinoa, water, and bay leaf to aboil. Add a pinch of sea salt. Cover and reduceheat. Simmer for about 12 minutes. Removefrom heat. Add raisins to quinoa to plump. Setaside cool covered.

4. In a medium pot add a 1/2-inch water andbring to a boil covered. Put in kale and cookuntil wilted, about 3 minutes. Toss into acolander and rinse with cold water. Drain wellor spin in a salad spinner. Chop coarsely.

5. In a decorative salad bowl, combine thekale and baked yams. Using a fork, fluff thequinoa and raisins. Add to salad bowl.

6. In a 1 cup measure put the remaining ingre-dients and mix well. Add sea salt and freshlyground black pepper. Pour over salad, toss,and serve.

CREAMED KALE WITH CHICKPEAS

Try other greens such as collards, Swisschard, or dandelions. Cook the chickpeas aday or to before to speed up the preparation.

2 tablespoons coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil

1 large onion, chopped4 cloves garlic, chopped1 tablespoon ginger root, minced1 teaspoon cumin seeds or

1/2 teaspoon powder2 teaspoon garam masala or curry powder

(SEE NOTE 1)1 teaspoon coriander powder1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes1 bunch kale, about 8 cups chopped

(SEE NOTE 2)1/2 cup chickpea stock or cooking liquid 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk or

other preferred milk1/2 cup cashews2 tablespoons tomato paste2 cups chickpeas (SEE NOTE 3)Sea salt and freshly ground pepper, as desired

1. Heat a large skillet and add oil andonion. Cook on medium-high until softenedand beginning to brown, about 5 minutes.Add garlic, ginger, and cumin seeds and cookanother minute. Add remaining spices, andstir constantly to prevent burning for 1 moreminute.

2. Reduce heat to medium. Stir in kaleand stock. Cover and cook until kale isbright green, about 5 minutes. Stir occa-sionally.

3. In a blender put the coconut milk, cashews,and tomato paste and puree until smooth.

4. When the kale is cooked, add to theblender and whiz until everything in theblender is smooth.

5. Transfer the blender mixture back to theskillet. Add the chickpea and bring to a sim-mer. Cook another 10 minutes. Adjust season-ing. Serve over brown basmati rice

NOTE 1: If curry powder is used it’s notnecessary to use additional coriander andturmeric.

NOTE 2: Remove thick stemsNOTE 3: 1 cup dry chickpeas, soaked and

cooked will be the perfect amount!

Most of the time, conventional reality monopolizes ourattention with the stuff of everyday life—the challenges of edu-cation, earning a living, relationships, family, and health.Conventional reality contains the complications of experience,memory, identity, and duality fashioned out of the meaningsand stories we impose upon a pure and mysterious Field ofBeing. Our dramas, played out in the theater of gain and loss,desire and satisfaction, seem real and important to us.Conventional life involves the pursuit of satisfaction and fulfill-ment, wherein our happiness depends upon events unfoldingin line with our desires, hopes, and expectations. Thusimmersed in our conventional agreements—clinging to theversions of reality that seem entirely true and justified, trying tomake things work out—we suffer from attachment, craving,and anxiety, leading lives of "quiet desperation."

Then one day, on the path of ourpersonal evolution, we simultane-ously realize two things that hadpreviously escaped our notice:First, we discover that we live andbelieve, nearly all the time, in theconventional world; second, wenotice that we are suffering. If wesuffer a lack of money, makingmore money alleviates this pain; ifwe suffer physical illness, a returnto health solves this issue. Everyproblem has a solution.

Only when we are willing to riskall that we think we know, to relin-quish familiar truths that no longerserve and to look beyond consen-sus reality and venture into theunknown, can we finally step outof the endless search for conven-tional solutions. We need to real-ize that we ourselves are the centerand cause of our situation.

This Marksa Turning Point

We become interested not just inself-improvement, but also in self-transcendence. We take a leap of faiththat launches us on our search for aTeacher, Process, or Path to awaken-ing. We may attend seminars, readbooks, engage practices, and learn from a variety of guides.

The spiritual traditions point to such a transcendent Realitythan that which we perceive in our usual state of consciousness.This Reality lies outside our everyday stories and assumptions,beyond the boundaries of our common beliefs. Its truths are notfound in formulas, visions, or mystical experiences, but in asimple yet profound shift in perspective—a shift that reveals theGreat Simplicity of What Is, prior to all our complications.

The Great Traditions point to It, recommend It, remind us ofIt, and rhapsodize about It. They may advise paths or practicesinvolving meditation, fasting, breath work, bodywork, chanti-ng, concentration, contemplation, reflection, and service. TheSufis advise, "Live in the world but not of the world”-to func-tion in this conventional world while viewing it from a larger,transcendent perspective.

My work is not about abandoning the "Western Solution" tohappiness, striving for material success. Nor do I recommendexclusive focus on the "Eastern Solution" to happiness, turningfrom the world and "going inside" for answers. My workinvolves integrating both East and West, male and female, fleshand spirit, reason and faith, left-brain and right-brain, conven-tional and transcendental truths:

Freedom lives right here, right now, as close as our breath,as intimate as our next heartbeat. Awakening does not requireus to abandon the conventional world. Rather, we can bridgeboth worlds and all apparent dualities; we can keep our headin the clouds and our feet on solid ground.

We are already free and perfect. Nothing needs to bedone to complete or fulfill us, because we are alreadyHome, because no separation truly exists and no others, no

world, no time, no space, and noGod exists separate from us. Allis the Heart.

When we do grasp this GreatSimplicity, this Realization doesnot make us famous, successful,glamorous, wealthy, or even holy.Nor does it release us from theobligation to raise our children,go to work, and live our lives. Itonly brings us peace. It only givesus joy. It only sets us free. As thepoet Masahide once wrote,'Now that my house has burneddown, I own a better view of therising moon."

Such liberation from conven-tional beliefs may appear unpre-dictable, even frightening to thosewho have not yet tasted it. So, likechildren on a school-day morning,we may turn off the alarm, put apillow over our head at the firstwake-up call, and say, "Please letme sleep just a little longer!" Westart out wanting to wake-up, butend up settling for success withinthe dream. This is perfect, too.Reality waits with infinite patience.

We do not need to heal; weneed only to see that we werenever sick in the way we imagined;

that our “sickness” was only a story we believed and so expe-rienced as true. The transcendent perspective reveals that nomatter what our apparent challenges, our lives are alwaysunfolding in divine order and perfection; Not always pleasur-able or pleasant, but perfect in terms of our highest good andour soul's evolution.

A bridge exists between worlds. It is right in front of us,around us, inside us. To cross it we need only inquire into andtrust our own true nature, to see the transcendental perfectionof this world and of our lives unfolding. When we open oureyes in this manner, in this moment, we find within us the truththat sets us free.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, you’re probably quiteevolved on your path to greater spiritual and physicalhealth. I know that I was, even as I crept toward thehealth crisis that nearly took my life before the age ofthirty. I’d banished sugar (or so I thought) and junk food

and even most synthetic products from my life. But my bio-chemical impulses — courtesy of my addictive and metabol-ic heredity and my SAD juvenile diet — were deep-seeded bythen, and no amount of psychological work or self-disciplinecould overcome the dark (biochemically-perpetuated) cloudthat predisposed me to compulsive self-sabotage and itsresulting diseases—not even my “advanced health food diet”that any thinking person might have adopted back in 1990when my crisis arose (I was vegetarian for seven of my mostcompulsive years). Sure I felt much better when I first got offof the processed junk I grew up with, but the causes behindmy need for that fix remained and my physiology (morespecifically, my whacked-out dopamine pathways, leptin andinsulin functioning, adrenals, thyroid, and yeast colonies)compelled me to exploit any remaining dietary loophole—even a plate of beans, brown rice, berries or a dairy free,gluten-free, sugar-free raw and organic energy bar— to getit’s fix. My binges on these “health foods” resulted in autoim-mune liver disease (accompanied by a head-to-toe litany ofother issues) at twenty-four.

In the late ‘80’s, my illness forced me to search outside ofany diet I’d seen. In ‘90, two random, uncharacteristicallyhigh fat food choices (more than a month apart) gave me amemorably distinct moment of freedom from my usual rollercoaster energy and mood patterns, which you can read aboutin my book The Truth About Beauty. But those incidentslaunched a year and a half per-sonal experiment to replicatethose two fleeting feelings offreedom and make it both con-tinuous and permanent. Thefinal “Rubiks Cube” click trans-formed my body and life beyondrecognition and has made meyounger looking at 49 than Ilooked at nineteen. In fact, sci-

ence now supports that what I achieved biochemically with-out knowing can take as little as three days to achieve, ifdone perfectly (more on that, below). Equally miraculous isthe fact that we can live in rare freedom from even the minorcravings and weight concerns most “healthy” people livewith—without willpower.

No More White Knucklingor Willpower:

Correct The Chemistryof Cravings

Most people occasionally use foods, caffeine, alcohol,prescription drugs or nicotine to stimulate or relaxthemselves at one time or another, taking years off

one’s life. Sugar and alcohol binges, for example, are shownto spike dopamine (the brain chemical that gives cocaine itspleasurable effect), and over time, disable our natural recep-tors for it. They also deplete serotonin, another extremelyimportant well-being neurochemical. And so repeated indul-gences over time can lead to seriously handicapped functionof the brain’s feel-good responses, diminishing our sense ofwellbeing and making us vulnerable to increasing depressionor cravings between “fixes.” When one can no longer rideout a low without bingeing again, they have officiallybecome an addict.

Many addictions lead to others. Eighty percent of alcoholicssmoke. One in five people who have eating disorders areaddicted to one or more other drugs. Alcoholics who are

abstaining desperately cravesugar, which has a similar molec-ular structure. And while alco-hol, cigarettes and coffee areoften cited as the most widelyused drugs, the abused substancethat trumps them all in populari-ty is sugar in its countlessforms—the most deceivinglydestructive everyday drug—and

unilateral contributor to degenerative disease—in the world.

Research has shown that most self-destructivebehavior—from compulsions, to anxieties, todepression—are attributable to imbalances in ahandful of brain chemicals, including dopamine,endorphin, and serotonin. But in1994 the hor-mone leptin was discovered. Soon thereafter,the dietary connection between leptin,hunger, and satiety—was made by interna-tionally recognized insulin, leptin, and mTORdietary pioneer, Dr. Ron Rosedale. Here is hisexplanation:

“There’s a widespread phenomena of extremecravings and weight gain in our country that iscaused by a little-known disorder called leptin resistance. This affectsvirtually all diabetics and pre-diabetics, as well as most peoplewho’ve been exposed to high-glycemic diets over prolonged periods(such as low-fat diets). Leptin is the body’s master hunger and fat stor-age hormone. Repeated exposure to blood sugar-spiking drinks orfoods—even if calories are controlled—desensitizes the cells to lep-tin’s signals until they are no longer reaching the brain, and it’s defaultmessage is that the body is starving. What follows is an all-out survivalmission by the body, using every pathway to get the person to craveand eat sugar (in any form, including starch or grains) to achieve fatstorage even if a person is already heavy. The brain will even altertaste perception to prefer sweet foods to influence food selection tofavor fat storage. Willpower is no long-term match for the cravingsproduced by leptin resistance. It’s a primal craving felt as serious,mortal hunger. It’s about obeyinghormonal commands we aredesigned to obey. Most peoplethink constant cravings and havingto tell themselves to stop eating is anormal part of being human, butwe were not designed to resisthunger or question how much toeat. This is a sure sign of hormonalmalfunction.”

Other things that accompany ormay even drive behavior choicesinclude blood sugar (and conse-quently, mood) swings, Candidayeast overgrowth, thyroid imbal-ances and adrenal fatigue. Evensleep problems and, in some, meal-skipping, can contribute to addictivecravings. Of course, emotional trig-gers do exist, but their relative pow-erlessness, if biochemical healingtakes place, is shocking. In fact, somany people are in disbelief andoften upset at how long they blamedtheir emotions or lack of willpoweronce their biochemistry is fixed andno longer distorts their emotions andrelationship with food.

Today’s fitness trainers, doctorsand even degrading TV boot camp-

style reality shows perpetuate thestubborn myth that suffering, sweat,and incredible self-discipline arethe ultimate paths to true “victory.”Most eating disorders, addictionand alcohol recovery clinics statethat there is no cure and focus on alitany of emotional and spiritualcauses. I’m not about to make aclaim here… But I am (as are somany I’ve worked with) living proofthat a heroine-like food addictioncan give way to unimagined peaceand freedom (twenty-four years andcounting) with no need to white

knuckle it, achieve spiritual near-perfection, or declare oneself as eter-nally “in recovery.”

Many studies in recent years showed high fat to be the healthiestdiet. Only a handful of us have practiced and espoused the lower pro-tein, higher fat low carb approach.

The mTOR-ProteinGame-Changer

EE very cell, nerve, gland and organ of your body depends on what? Ifyour answer is optimum thyroid function, you are correct. Yourbrain cells need the thyroid hormones to think. Muscle cells needthyroid hormones to move. What happens when your thinking is not

working optimally? You eat food and breathe oxygen but, if you don’t haveenough T-3, your body is unable to manufacture it in order for your food todigest properly or to make energy for your brain nerves, muscles, reproduc-tive organs and other cells of your body.

If you don’t have optimum thyroid function your brain may feel like it’sin a fog. Your memory may fail you. Without optimum thyroid hormonesyour digestion may not work properly. You may not be able to conceive achild. Medical opportunists rake in tens of thousands of dollars for what theycall fertility treatment before considering the basics: sound nutrition evalu-ation, bio-identical hormonal support and optimizing thyroid function.

In addition to the above, many of the common over-treated symptoms treat-ed with drugs, are directly attributed to hypothyroidism or at least a thyroidfunctioning less than optimally, including high cholesterol, PMS, depression,body fat, weight gain, cold hands/feet, chronic and undue fatigue, fibromyal-gia, high blood pressure, diabetes, high homocysteine and much more.

BUT MY DOCTOR SAYS MY THYROID IS NORMAL

This is the biggest reason so many people are on so many different med-ications, unnecessary prescriptions and psycho-quackery medicines.Medical doctors are trained at pathology. As long as your tests fall into anaverage range with the rest of the masses, you are considered normal. Youare never told what is optimum. In Naturopathic medicine we don’t startwith the disease model. We start with the optimal; what should your bloodprofile numbers be if the environment were perfect, your body temperaturewas perfect and your body was working perfectly.

TREAT THE INDIVIDUAL, NOT THE DISEASE

This is the primary difference between mainstream orthodox drug medi-cine and naturopathic medicine. Drug medicine treats the named medicalcondition, which is often the symptoms. Naturopathic medicine treats theindividual, for toxicity, deficiencies and imbalances. Both allopathic andnaturopathic medicine is the science of uncertainty, the art of probability.

The first thing a naturopathic doctor, who is treating you and not the dis-ease, is to ask questions concerning the symptoms during his medical histo-ry. Next is the iridology examination. The eyes are the window to the souland will reveal thyroid challenges. Next is a complete blood and urine analy-sis. Next is basil body temperature. This should be taken first thing in themorning under the arm while you are still lying in bed. Sixty percent (60%)of your energy production is used to generate heat. Lastly is the NaturopathicDoctor’s 1001 Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire. This is the most exten-sive questionnaire developed to date, for nutritional assessment.

Your blood work must include a complete thyroid profile, not just a TSH thata lot of doctors order. This test is not really a good test by itself. When your ortho-dox drug medicine doctor says your TSH test is normal, this report is totally mean-ingless and the reason being the foremost authority on the thyroid in the country,Broda Barns, M.D., says that up to 40% of the country suffers from anunder- performing thyroid. It’s possible for your TSH test to come backnormal (average) and your thyroid to be under performing. Your doc-tor is trained at diagnosing pathology and treating disease not at build-ing high-level health and wellness.

Only when your naturopathic doctor takes all aspects of your thy-roid, into consideration can your thyroid health be determined.Remember Nobel Prize winner, Harvard Professor, Dr. Levine,believes that a slightly high thyroid function, hyperthyroid is health-ier than a slightly low thyroid, hypothyroid.

There are two aspects to optimal thyroid

health. One is nutritional. The second is hormonal. The majority of patient’sthyroid problems can be corrected with a good cleanup from one’s destruc-tive life style and dietary habits followed by a well organized nutritional sat-uration program based on your individual bio-chemistry, while some indi-viduals may require bio-identical thyroid therapy to make a correction.

In the early 1800’s very little was known about the thyroid. Dr. Ord inLondon began doing autopsies on the thyroid gland. He concluded that lowthyroid function caused or contributed to hardening of the arteries.

BIO-IDENTICAL PLUS NUTRITION VS SYNTHROID

Dr. Broda Barns, M.D., one of the foremost authorities on the thyroid,wrote after 40 years in practice that he had never seen a single hypothyroidcase corrected on synthroid. He also said that over 50% of his patients total-ly corrected their hypothyroidism on bio-identical thyroid replacementwithin two years, many in as little as three months. This means they nolonger required any thyroid support. Dr. Barns, remember, used only bio-identical thyroid in his treatments. He never employed naturopathic nutri-tional support therapy or naturopathic detoxification.

Patients tell me their orthodox drug doctors told them that the thyroidnever heals, balances or corrects. When they ask, how long do I stay on syn-throid? They are told, for life! In our form of naturopathic medicine, we usein addition to bio-identical thyroid, naturopathic detoxification, nutritionalsaturation therapy, homeopathic remedies, herbalogy, photo-luminescence,rife vibration medicine, chelation therapy, I.V. nutritionals far infrared detox-ification sauna, ionic foot detox baths and much more . . . all without drugs.

High homocysteine is a known risk factor for sudden heart attacks, cripplingstrokes, memory loss, peripheral artery disease, increased risk of bone fractures,dementia and attention deficit. People with low thyroid function tend to havehigh levels of homocysteine. Mental burn out, fatigue, sadness, irritability,anger, sleepiness, sense of being chilly or hot, forgetfulness, hair falling out, dif-ficulty getting started in the morning are all signs of hypothyroidism.

CONCLUSION

Hypothyroidism is America’s most under diagnosed and under treated dis-ease.What most doctors don’t know is, synthroid and other synthetic chemi-cals do not work for most patients. Bio-identical thyroid was used for 50 yearsbefore the greedy pharmaceutical industry patented and introduced synthroid.

Most importantly, synthetic thyroid drugs do not work for most peoplebecause synthroid is a chemical T-4, which must be converted to the activehormone, T-3. Many patients are on synthroid for life and suffer from all thesymptoms of hypothyroidism because their metabolism is unable to efficientlyconvert the T-4 to T-3, the active hormone, and their nutrition is so deficient inthe essential elements that allows the body to manufacture its own hormones.

It is not unusual for children to be hypothyroid. Some go through life withhypothyroid symptoms that could have been corrected early. It is disgusting tothink of how many children are on psycho-quackery drugs on a pseudo psy-cho-quackery diagnosis of attention deficit and the lacky public school systemis more concerned with their big pharma commission checks they get for eachdrugged child, than they are with the health, education and welfare of the

child. In short: The medical, pharmaceutical system has failed us.It’s time to take personal responsibility for your health and wellness.
