I. INTRODUCTION Thanks for coming to this class! It is the next step in our Life Development Process following, Life in the Vineyard (class 101), and the “Declaration of Membership, which indicated that you now know God has called you to be a committed part of this church body. We're excited for you to go on with God and to experience all that he has for you and for us together.

A. Overall Purpose of the Class To help move you towards more maturity in Christ.

"We are not to remain as children...but to grow up in every way into Christ" Eph. 4:14-15

(Phillips)

"...that you may become mature Christians and fulfill God's will for you." Colossians 4:12 (Phillips)

B. Focus of the Class To impart basic understanding, training, and skills in the general 4 habits or "means of grace" given to a follower of Christ. Without them, becoming mature in Christ is almost impossible. 1. Praying 2. Time with God's Word 3. Giving 4. Fellowshipping with others

C. Immediate Goal of the Class That I will______________________ (or recommit) to doing the habits necessary for more spiritual maturity and wholeness to occur. One definition of a habit: (Webster's) A continual, often unconscious, inclination to do a certain activity, acquired through frequent repetition.

"Sow a thought, reap an act, Sow an act, reap a habit, Sow a habit, reap a character, Sow a character, reap a destiny."

"In the past you voluntarily gave your bodies to the service of vice and...the purpose of evil. So now give yourselves to the service of righteousness for the purpose of becoming truly good." Romans 6:19 (Phillips)

"Take the time and the trouble to keep yourself spiritually fit." 1Timothy 4:7 (Phillips)

II. MATURITY, HEALING, AND WHOLENESS UNDERSTOOD A. The Goal = _________________________________________

"From the beginning God decided that those who come to him should become like his son" Rom. 8:28 (LB) (see also Eph. 4:13; Col. 1:28)

"The Son stands first in the line of humanity he restored. We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in him." Romans 8:29b, 30 (The Message Bible)

B. Implications 1. Restored ___relationship (adoption)____ Romans 8:15-17; Galatians 5:4-7 2. Restored ___intimacy_______________ John 17:25-26 3. Restored ___authority_______________ Luke 9:1, 2; Matthew 28:19, 20 4. Restored ___dwelling place __________ Acts 2:38; Ephesians 2:20 5. Restored ___body __________________ 1 Peter 2:24 6. Restored ___mind ___________________ 1 Corinthians 2:16; Philippians 2:5 7. Restored ___eternal inheritance________ Ephesians 1:18; 1 Peter 1:3-5

C. Facts About Spiritual Maturity, Healing and Wholeness 1. It's not Automatic

"For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food is for the mature, that is those who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil." Hebrews 5:13, 14 (NKJV, NIV)

2. It's a Process

"Learn to be mature." - Proverbs 8:5 (GN)

"Continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our savior Jesus Christ." 2 Pet, 3:18 (GN)

3. It Requires Tests - 1 Peter 4:12-14; James 1:24; Romans 5:1-5 "Process items" - The Making of a Leader - Bobby Clinton NAV Press a. integrity checks (e.g. Joseph and Potiphar's wife; David and Saul) b, word/obedience checks (e.g. Eve in the garden, Abraham, Job) "Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way into the desert those forty years to humble you, and to test you in order to know what was in your hearts.. .to teach you that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord." Deut. 8:2, 3 It takes Daily Discipline "Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness." 1Timothy 4:7 (NASB)

"Take the time and trouble to keep yourself spiritually fit." 1Timothy 4:7 (Ph.) "If anyone would come after me he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me." Luke 9:23 "Cross bearing" = giving Christ first place in my life

Class 201 - Page 5

5. It takes Christ's Righteousness (His Blood) "But now in Christ Jesus you who were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ... For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father." Ephesians 2:13, 18 (NKJV)

6. It takes Christ's Presence (His Spirit)

a.. "Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom, And we with unveiled faces all contemplate the Lord's glory are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." 2 Corinthians 3:17, 18 (NIV) (see also Colossians 1:28-29; 2 Corinthians 4:11; Galatians 2;20)

b. Colossians 1:28, 29 - "Christ in you (is) the Hope of Glory ... To this end I labor struggling with all his energy which works so powerfully in me."

c. 2 Corinthians 4:11 - "For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body." d. Galatians 2:20 - "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body I live by faith in the son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." e. It is the Spirit in us, the Seed of God (I John 3:9), the "power of an indestructible life" (Christ's life) unleashed in us that enables us to live this life as God has commanded. Without his resources loosed in and through us we are like great and wondrous ocean liners dead in the water -- lots of great plans, purposes and beauty but going nowhere fast because the engines are stilled.

D. The Dynamic of How Maturity, Wholeness, and Healing Occurs

1. The Crucial Role of Grace, Humility, Faith, and Obedience Grace = "God's empowering presence enabling me to be what he's called me to be and to do what he's called me to do." (see following: Acts 4:33, 11:23; Luke 2:40; 2 Corinthians 13:9) Humility Releases God's Grace

"God resists the proud, gives grace to the humble." James 4:7 Humility = "to lay low" as one laying before a king; a good definition = "to agree with what the king says"; "agreement with God." Faith is the basis for agreement with God; that is belief proceeds wholehearted action. To agree with what God says we must believe he is good, loving, and right. (Hebrews 11:6)

Obedience is the fruit then, of heartfelt faith and humility. Where obedience is lacking, the “proof in the pudding” of one’s unbelief and pride - the opposites of faith and humility – is evident.

Class 201 - Page 6

Thus the release of God's grace to heal and mature us comes through faith and humility that is manifested in specific acts of obedience. "And we are witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him." Acts 5:32

2. A Word Picture

a.. We are God's spiritual house Ephesians 2;20; 1 Corinthians 3:9, 16; 6:19

b. Satan once owned the house: Now ownership is transferred. "...if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation." 2 Corinthians 5;17

c.. Destroyed rooms and even unwelcome tenants are left behind which speaks of brokenness, the power of the flesh, and demonic oppression and/or affliction in our hearts, minds, or bodies. c.f. Romans 7:13-25

d.. The New Owner, Grace (i.e. the Holy Spirit), primarily lives in the basement and in the rooms where he is invited and given control. e.. Only the twin sisters of Humility and Faith can give us the "key of obedience" for

Grace to open the doors to each unclean or destroyed room. That key is uniquely shaped in the form of a cross through which no entrance can ever be gained if one does not firmly hold to it.

f. As we go with Humility and Faith, Grace uses the key of obedience to unlock each and every door to the rooms of our heart. There, at the sight of Grace's presence every demon of hell, every bit of unforgiveness, resentment, and brokenness flees. They all know the eviction notice was served long ago and they have no more right to stay. Healing, Maturity, and Wholeness takes place.

E. How do I know I'm maturing and becoming whole? Examine the Fruit of your life. "Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves." 2 Corinthians 13:5 (NKJV)

1. Fruit of the Spirit Ruled Life (Galatians 5:22) Our character: Am I growing more and more in... a. Love towards God and others (vs. selfishness and self-centeredness.) b. Joy and confidence that Christ is in control of all of life (vs, anger.) c. Peace and assurance, free from the tyranny of fear. d. Long-suffering or patience with my fellow workers, spouse, children, etc. e. Kindness in specific action towards others. f. Goodness - that is in loving the good and hating evil. g. Faithfulness - able to be trusted as loyal and consistent. h. Gentleness - another translation says "humility" or "meekness" - that is "contented with who you are and who God has made you to be". i. Self-control - in being able to give up my rights and not have demandingness.

Class 201 - Page 7

2. In Having Wisdom From Above (James 3:17,18) a.. Pure b. Peaceable c. Gentle d. Willing to yield e. Full of mercy and good fruits. f. Without partiality and hypocrisy g. Peacemaking in relationships.

Having 1 Corinthians 13 love for others Love... a. is patient and kind. b. is not envious. c. does not parade itself d. is not proud, e. is not rude. f keeps believing. g. keeps hoping. h. keeps enduring.

4. In Longing To Model the Ministry of Jesus a. Prayer life b. Praying for the sick c. Casting out demons d. Feeding the poor e. Making disciples

Spiritual maturity and becoming whole is a lifelong process of becoming like Jesus, his life,

character, and ministry. This is demonstrated by growing in right hearted obedience to the

commands of Jesus and in the love and enjoyment of who He is.

Discussion Questions - Read Romans 5:1-5 1. According to Paul in what two ways do we get access into God's empowering presence? (vs. 1, 2)

2. How do tribulations release the Holy Spirit in us according to verses 3-5? 3. From your own experience give an example of how the Holy Spirit has helped you see the bigger perspective (of God making us like Christ) through personal trials or difficulties.

SESSION 2:

FOUR HABITS

FOR MATURITY,

HEALING &

WHOLENESS

Class 201 - Page 9

I. INTRODUCTION From our working understanding of both the goal of maturity (Christlikeness) and the empowerment to bring it about (grace) we now turn to the conduits or vehicles through which Christ's presence is released. Remember, God gives us the grace to obey in the first place, but He calls us to obedience for the further release of grace in our lives.

The 4 Habits, then, are the keys of obedience which God's Spirit uses to unlock the doors for healing, wholeness and maturity to come in,

The Habit of Time in God's Word "How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to Your word." Psalm 119:9 "The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. It is God's way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone." II Timothy 3:16-17 (LB)

Class 201 - Page 11

II. HOW TO HEAR GOD'S WORD IN SCRIPTURE "Faith comes from hearing the Word of God." Romans 10:17 PROBLEM: We forget _______ % of what we hear after 72 hours. How to Improve Your Hearing: 1. Be ready and eager to hear God.

"He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" Luke 8:8 "How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" Psalm 119:103

2. Deal with attitudes and strongholds that prevent you from hearing God (Luke 8: 4-15).

"Consider carefully how you listen... ." Luke 8:18 - A Closed Mind: Is fear, pride or bitterness preventing me from hearing God? - A Superficial Mind: Am I really serious about wanting to hear God speak? - A Preoccupied Mind: Am I too busy and concerned with other things to concentrate on what God has to say?

3. Confess any sin in your life.

"...get rid of all moral filth and humbly accept the Word..." James 1:2

4. Take notes on what you hear. "We must pay more careful attention to what we've heard, so that we do not drift away!" Hebrews 2: 1

Keep a spiritual notebook Keep a spiritual notebook Keep a spiritual notebook Keep a spiritual notebook Act on what you hear! "Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says!" James 1:22 "Whoever... does not simply listen and then forget, but puts it into practice - that person will be blessed in what he does." James 1:25 (GN)

III. HOW TO READ GOD'S WORD

"Happy is the one who reads this book.., and obeys what is written in it!" Rev, 1:3 (GN) How often should I read God's Word? ___________________________________________ "(The Scriptures) shall be his constant companion. He must read from it everyday of his life so that he will learn to respect the Lord his God by obeying all of His commands." Deut.17:19 (LB) Suggestions: * Read through the whole Bible systematically, * Read the Bible without notes. * Read it in different translations.

For reading: Good News, Living Bible, Phillips, The Message Bible * Read it aloud to yourself. * Underline or color code key verses. * Choose a reading plan and stick with it. If I read approximately__________ minutes a day, I can read through the Bible once a year.

VI. HOW TO MEDITATE ON GOD'S WORD "(Those) who are always meditating on His Laws…are like trees along a river bank bearing fruit...they never wither and whatever they do prospers." Ps 1:2-3 (LB)

Why Meditate on Scripture? 1. It is the key to becoming like Christ.

"...Your life is shaped by your thoughts." Pr. 4:23 (GN) "...Be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Rom. 12:2

2. It is the key to answered prayer. "If you live your life in Me, and My words live in your hearts, you can ask for whatever you like, and it will come true for you." John 15:7 (Ph)

3. It is the key to successful living.

"...Meditate on (the Word) day and night, so you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful." Joshua 1:8

Six Ways to Meditate on a Verse: 1. Picture it! Visualize the scene in your mind. 2. Pronounce it! Say the verse aloud, each time emphasizing a different word. 3. Paraphrase it! Rewrite the verse in your own words. 4. Personalize it! Replace the pronouns or people in the verse with your own name. 5. Pray it! Turn the verse into a prayer and say it back to God. 6. Probe it! Ask the following nine questions: (S.P.A.C.E.P.E.T.S) Is there any...

S.P.A.C.E.P.E T S Questions: Sin to confess? Promise to claim? Attitude to change? Command to obey? Example to follow? Prayer to pray? Error to avoid? Truth to believe? Something to thank God for?

VII. HOW TO APPLY GOD'S WORD "Do not fool yourselves by just listening to the Word. Instead, put it into practice." James 1:22

"...Whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven." Matt. 5:19

Class 201 - Page 21

How to Apply Scripture:

1st ask: "What did it mean to the original hearers?"

2nd ask: "What is the underlying timeless principle?"

3rd ask: "Where or how could I practice that principle?" or "What am I being asked to do or

to believe? 4th ask: "How can I turn this into prayer?"

Write out a sentence that describes a project or action you will take to apply the truth.

Most applications will focus on one of three areas : With God .....................Within myself………...…With other people

"Now that you know these things -- do them! That is the path of blessing!" John 13:17 (LB)

Final Note: You will not usually have time to do all the various activities of reading, studying, meditating, etc. Let the Holy Spirit guide you into doing what is needed; just be aware that an overabundance of one method to the neglect of the others will imbalance you. Simply adjust as you go.

Class 201 - Page 23

I. TYPES OF PRAYER: BEING RELEASED TO COMMUNICATE WITH GOD Greek = "Proskeneo"- "to worship, bow down, and to entreat"

A. Meditation: Begin with , i.e. "Our Father who is in Heaven, may Your Name be honored" Meditation is thinking and ruminating upon the character of God and His life in us.

1. Brother Lawrence: 3 Steps from "Practicing the Presence of God" a. Recollection of God - Think "God you are here!"

b. Conversation with God - "(My desire was) to be always with God and to do nothing, say nothing, and think nothing which may displease Him; and this without any other view than purely for the love of Him... ." Brother Lawrence, p. 82

Think "You are here! You are in me, 0, Lord!

c. Sustained Awareness - To "never live a moment outside of His presence", and to do only what pleases him. Andrew Murray calls this "Unbroken Fellowship". Simply put, think about and converse with God as often as you can, not being surprised by your failures or shortcomings. Simply confess your sin or failure and begin again.

2. Use the Names of God for Meditation and Worship: a. Jehovah -Shammah - "God is present with me" (Ezek. 48:35)

"You are here! I'm never alone!"

b. Jehovah -Rohi - "God you are my Shepherd" (Ps. 23:1) "You lead me, feed me, and guide me where I'm supposed to be!"

c. Jehovah -Jireh - "God you are my Provider" (Gen. 22:14) "You see what I need before I even ask!"

d. Jehovah -Rophe - "God you are my Healer" (Exodus 15:26) "You, 0 Lord, heal my body, emotions, relationships!"

e. Jehovah -Tsidkenu - "God you are my Righteousness" (Jer. 23:6; II Cor. 5:21) "You accept me and forgive me because Christ did for me what I couldn't do - live perfectly! "

f. Jehovah -M'Kiddish - "God you are my Sanctifier" (Lev. 20:8)

"Thank you God for continuing to make me holy like Jesus!"

g. Jehovah -Shalom - "God you are my Peace" (Judges 6:24)

"You are my peace, O God; I don't have to be ruled by fear!"

h. Jehovah -Nissi - "God you are my Banner" (Exodus 17:15) “You are my victory in conflict and confrontation!" Class 201 - Page 24

Kingdom Circles

Class 201 - Page 24a

i. Elohim - "God above all Gods" "No gods of my own making or problems are greater than you, Lord!"

j. Yaweh/ Jehovah - "I AM" or "I WILL BE WHAT I NEED TO BE" (Exodus 3:14)

"Thank you God that you will be all I need, so I can do what You desire!" 3. Make a list of what God has done for you and review your list when you pray 4. Make a "prayer journal" placing verses under subject areas for "block praying" 5. The Use of Worship Music:

a. Demons flee in the presence of worship (cf. I Sam. 16:23) b. God speaks prophetically in worship (cf. II Kings 3:15-19; I Chron. 25:1,3) c. Healing, infilling, and love for God and man is released through it (Eph. 5:18,19) d. Practical Tips:

1) Borrow or purchase "presence-releasing" music: e.g. "Light the Fire", "Father's House", "Halleluiah Glory", "Holy is the Lord". (Available at our Book table and bookstores) 2) Relax by sitting or laying down while the music is playing. 3) Receive by listening with a "yes and do it, Lord" in your heart. 4) Pray for more of the Lord's presence and a revelation of Himself. 5) Go from there by faith that you are more filled with His Spirit than before; expect His voice and His power.

B. Intercession - "I commit myself to "

"Your Kingdom come, Your will be done" Intercession = prayer that pleads with God on behalf of another (Lk. 18). God's Kingdom = His rule and reign which consists in part of His righteousness, peace, and joy (Romans 14:17). 1. Pray for God's will and His Kingdom to: "come in me...in my spouse ...in my family,.. in my small group.. .in my pastor and his family... in my church... in my job...in my city ...in my

government... in my state... in my nation ...in the world. 2. Pray from the apostolic prayers of Paul: Eph. 1:3-20, 3:14-21; Col. 1:3-12; I Thes. 1:2-3; II Thess. 1:11-12; Phil. 1:3-11

C. Petition - "I ask God to . "

"Give us this day our daily bread" Petition = seems to be a form of prayer addressing ones personal needs and wants. "God will supply all your needs from His riches in glory because of what Christ has done for us." Phil. 4:19 (LB)

Class 201 - Page 25

The Key: Write down your requests with a promise you are believing from the Bible. Expect an answer! "Don't worry about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Phil. 4:7

D. Prayers of forgiveness - "I ask God to ."

"Forgive us our debts... ." 1. 5 Steps to Forgiveness and Freedom:

a. Ask the Holy Spirit to manifest . "Examine me, 0 God, and know my mind; test me and discover my thoughts. Find out if there is any evil in me." Ps. 139:23-24

b. Confess each sin specifically . "You will never succeed in life if you try to hide your sins. Confess them and give them up; then God will show mercy to you." Prov. 28:13 (GN)

c. Make wrong things right .

"When you remember your brother has something against you... go at once to make peace with him, then come back and offer your gift to God." Matt. 5:23-23 (GN)

d. By faith accept God's forgiveness.

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:4

e. Exchange Christ's life for your own weakness or inability.

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." Galatians 2:20

E. Healing Prayer

1. "Is anyone among you sick? ...let them pray over him... ." James 5:16 2. "Confess your faults one to another and pray for each other so that you may be healed." James 5:16 3. The 5 Step Prayer Model -Interview - Diagnostic Decision - Prayer Selection - Prayer Engagement - Post Prayer Counsel

Class 201 - Page 26

F. Warfare Prayer "I ask for "And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one." Matthew 6:13

1. Pray God's armor over yourself and others from Ephesians 6:12ff

a. The helmet of salvation - "Keep renewing my mind Lord and protect me from "stinking thinking." b. The breastplate of righteousness - "I'm covered by your righteousness, Lord." c. The belt of truth - "Hold all things together by what you say is true Lord." d. The shoes of the gospel of peace - "Make me go where you are proclaiming Christ." e. The shield of faith - "Protect me as I lean on your faithfulness Lord." f. The sword of the Spirit - The Word of God - "Bring to mind the Scriptures I need to

defeat Satan's lies."

2. Dealing with "Strongholds" of the mind (2 Corinthians 10:4, 5) a. A definition: "An entrenched pattern of thinking, believing or acting that is opposed to truth about God's sovereignty, goodness, and love." b. A definition: "Anything that has a strong hold on your mind or behavior."

Practical Tips to Deal with Strongholds 1. Level 1 - The Mind

a. Identify the Strongholds Examples of Strongholds 1. Anger: "Nobody is looking out for my best interests so I'll have to do

something myself."

2. Lust: "I know it's wrong but everybody struggles with it. I don't think I'll ever be able to not lust. After all I'm only human."

Apathy, Indifference: "Nothing has ever changed before, so why try?"

4. Envy, Jealousy, Ambition: "That person is better than me; they are going to take my place; maybe my gifts aren’t valuable or maybe I don’t even have anything to offer.” 5. Rejection,, Self-pity: "I guess nobody really cares about me."

Condemnation, False Guilt: "I am a failure; I keep on messing up and I don't think I'll ever be free."

7. Hopelessness, Despair, Discouragement: "Why try, nothing is going to be

different anyway. " Prayer: "Lord I see I am thinking or feeling this way that is contrary to what you say in your word. I acknowledge it."

Class 201 - Page 27

b. Counterattack with God's Word and Prayer "Is not my word like fire", declares the Lord, "and like a hammer that crushes the rock in pieces?" - Jeremiah 23:28 "Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayer, and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keeping praying for all the saints." - Ephesians 6:17, 18 Examples: Stronghold - Weapon - From the Word Fear of Rejection, Lust I John 4:18 - "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment." Despair, Hopelessness Philippians 1:6 - "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Fear of Failure, Success Jeremiah 29:11-13; Psalm 138:8 - "The Lord will fulfill his purposes for me." Fear of Poverty Psalm 23:1; Ephesians 3:19, 20; II Corinthians 9:8 "...having all you need you will abound in every good work.” Feelings of Condemnation, Guilt Colossians 2:14-16; II Corinthians 5.21

Romans 8: 1 - "Therefore there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus."

Distracted and/or lust filled mind Jeremiah 32:38 - "...I will give them single- mindedness of heart and action... ." No Direction, Futility regarding Psalm 25:12 - "He will instruct him in the Guidance way chosen for him." Doubt About God's Goodness Romans 8:28; Psalm 92:14; Psalm 27:13- "I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. " Prayer: "Lord, in Jesus name I tear down this stronghold of because your word says ."

Class 201 - Page 28

c. Use the Ultimate Weapon: Steadfast Faith in the Goodness and Sovereignty of God "...the god we serve... will rescue us...but even if he does not we want you to know O King, that we will not serve your gods..." - Daniel 3:18 "I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." - Paul to the Philippians 1:20, 21 "There is no greater weapon of spiritual power against darkness than that of a crucified life with Christ. The man who is no longer a slave to his passions and expectations is a free man indeed; truly he is untouchable and there is no hold in him. " Prayer: "Lord, I don't understand why this oppression is still hitting me but I choose to believe you know what is going on and you will answer me exactly at the right time."

d. Tear down "Strongholds" in your family, small group, church, etc.

Prayer: "Lord I (we) take captive every thought or stronghold afflicting " " and we ask that it would be made captive to you."

G. The Role of Unknown Prayer Languages 1. Also known as "glossolalia" - speaking in tongues

This is available for the normative believer's experience (c.f. Acts 2:4; 8:17, 18; 10:44-46; 19:1-6).

3. There are different types of purposes

a. For interpretation of a message to God from the Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:2, 26, 27) b. For personal edification (i.e. communion with God) (1 Cor. 14:4) c. For intercession (Romans 8:26)

4. Practical Tips

a. Ask God to release the "gift of tongues" to you b. Wait... keep asking c. Begin to praise God in something other than English d. Focus on God in you while you do it - e.g. "I worship you, oh Lord, with everything I am.” e. Don't be put off by the foolishness of it. God loves humility. f. Practice it daily; build up to 10-15 minutes a day of using it.

Class 201 - Page 29

H. Fasting and Prayer 1. Weekly deny yourself of food or pleasure and pray. 2. Use wisdom for longer fasts (see Richard Foster's Celebration of Discipline) 3. Fasting releases...

a. Revelation (Dan. 10) b. God's Spiritual Warfare (Dan. 10) c. Sense of clarity about God's greatness d. Repentance (Joel 2:12)

II. PRACTICAL TIPS FOR AN EFFECTIVE QUIET TIME Definition: "A quiet time is a daily time I set aside to be alone with God to get to know Him through the Bible, worship, and prayer."

A. The Importance of a Daily Quiet Time: 5 Reasons

1. We were made to have fellowship and intimacy with God. "If anyone... opens the door, I will come in and fellowship with him and he with me." Rev. 3:20 (LB)

2. Jesus died to make this restored relationship with God happen.

"God has invited you into this wonderful friendship with his Son, Christ our Lord." l Cor. 1: 9 (LB)

3. Personal time alone with God was Jesus' habit.

Mark 1:35; Luke 22:31; Luke 5:16 - "Jesus withdrew often to lonely places and prayed."

4. Every person who has been effective in prayer and lifelong ministry for God developed this habit.

e.g. Abraham, Moses, David, Paul

5. You cannot be an effective Christian without it. "Man cannot live on bread alone but on every word that God speaks." Mt. 4:4 (GN)

B. The Purposes of a Daily Quiet Time

1. To give glory to God. 2. To get direction from God. 3. To gain delight in God. 4. To attain answers to prayers from God. 5. To grow more like God.

"For as you know him better and better God will give you through his great power, everything you need for living a truly good life... He has promised to save us...and to give us his own character!" 2 Peter 1:3-4 (LB)

C. How to Begin a Daily Quiet Time

1. Select a specific time: The best time for me is Reasons to consider the early morning: • The example of Bible characters: (Abraham, Job, Hannah, Jesus, David) • It appropriately states God comes first in my day. • "The best time to tune your instrument is before you play the concert, not after!" • You are likely to be more rested, your mind less cluttered, and your house the most

quiet. Whatever time you set - BE CONSISTENT

Class 201 - Page 35

2. "Start Small and Work Up" * Start with 15 minutes a day * Don't watch the clock * Emphasize quality not quantity

3. Choose a special place 4. Gather The Resources You Need

* A Bible * A pen or pencil * A notebook * Worship tapes

5. Begin with the right attitudes (see page 7&8 above) 6. Follow a simple plan

a. Ask God's presence to come and wait on Him b. Start with time in God's Word c. Keep alert to God's presence and voice while you read or study the Word.

"You have your heads in your Bibles constantly because you think you'll find eternal life there. But you miss the forest for the trees. These Scriptures are all about me!" John 5:39 (Message)

d. Write out and/or pray what you learned: something “to do” or “to believe.” e. Then use the Lord's Prayer Model (see "Types of Prayer" above). f. Finish with thanksgiving. Special Note: The point of a quiet time is to be with God and to do whatever he leads you to. As you do the various mechanics of prayer and having time in the Word go - where there is life - i.e. anointing from God's presence.

D. Dealing With Problems in Doing Quiet Times

1. The Problem of Discipline a. Go to bed early: "The Battle of the Blanket." b. Get up quickly. c. Prepare your resources the night before. d. Fall asleep thinking on God's goodness.

2. The Problem of Distractions

a. Get alone in a quiet place. b. Unplug the phone. c. Take captive your thought - i.e. "I choose to think about this other matter after I'm done.” d. Write your observations and thoughts down on paper or in a journal.

Class 201 - Page 36

3. The Problem of Dryness "The Battle of the Blahs": Never judge your quiet time by how you feel. Possible Causes of Spiritual Dryness: a. Lack of physical rest, exercise, or healthy eating b. Disobedience to God c. Harriedness - rushing your quiet time by looking continually at the clock d. Lack of diversity in your Bible study or prayer methods e. Not sharing your insights with others

4. The Problems of Diligence Satan fights hard against your quiet time; recognize this as spiritual warfare. a. Make a covenant, vow, or promise to God. b. Schedule it on your daily planner. c. Be prepared for the excuses of the flesh and Satan. d. Leave your Bible open at night to the passage to be read the next day.

5. The Problem of Failure and Condemnation

a. Immediately confess your failure as sin - "Missing the mark of God's best." b. Accept God's forgiveness. c. Start over again the next day. d. Make yourself accountable to a friend or small group leader. "Failure happens not when we fall but when we refuse to get back up and try again."

A Prayer of Commitment Father I realize I was created to have fellowship with you. Thank you for making this possible through Jesus' death and resurrection. I understand that having fellowship with you daily is the most important thing I can do with my life. I now want to (re) commit myself to spending time with you every day by having time in the Scriptures, by praying and worshiping you. I'm trusting in your strength and your life to help me be consistent and to help me overcome setbacks and failure. In Jesus' Name, Amen

The Habit of Regular Giving:

Honoring God With My Resources

"Just as you excel in everything else...

in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness...

see that you also excel in the grace of giving."

2 Corinthians 8:7

Class 201 - Page 38

I. HOW GIVING REVEALS MY SPIRITUAL MATURITY AND WHOLEN ESS Fill in the blanks with one of the following words:

- love - trust - selfishness - kingdom - joy - blessing -

A. Why God Wants Me To Give 1. Giving demonstrates my freedom to

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son." John 3:16

2. Giving is the antidote to "...be generous and willing to share. In this way they (you) may take hold of the life that is truly life!" 1 Timothy 6:17-19

3. Giving demonstrates my in God as Provider.

"Honor the Lord by giving him the first part of your income and h will fill your barns to overflowing." Proverbs 3:9

"A generous man himself will be blessed." Proverbs 22:9 "A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." Proverbs 11:25

6. Giving releases God's

"The people rejoiced.. .for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord." Jesus said, "There is more happiness in giving than receiving." Acts 20:3 5

B. What the Bible Teaches About Tithing

1. "Tithing" means "a tenth" Reasons For Tithing #1 Because God commanded it

"A tenth of all you produce is the Lord's and it is holy." Lev. 27:3 0 #2 It demonstrates God is first in my life

"The purpose of tithing is to teach you to always put God first in your life." Deut. 14:23 (LB)

#3 It reminds me that provision and wealth is a gift from God

"Always remember that it is the Lord your God who gives you the ability to produce wealth." Deut. 8:18

#4 It expresses thankfulness to God

"Each of you should bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord your God has blessed you." Deut. 16:17

Class 201 - Page 39

#5 Refusing to tithe is robbing God of his honor as provider, "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me! "But you ask, 'How do we rob you?' God says, "In tithes and offerings... Bring your whole tithe into my house." Mal. 3:8-10

#6 Tithing gives God the chance to prove himself as faithful

"Bring your whole tithe to my storehouse. Test me in this", says the Lord, "and see if I will not throw open the flood gates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you won't have room enough for it!" Mal 3:10

#7 Tithing is one way to show my love for God.

"...I want you to be leaders also in the spirit of cheerful giving...This is one way to prove that your love is real, that it goes beyond mere words." 2 Cor. 8:7b-8 (LB)

3. Tithing is controversial

a. Position by "non-tithing" - "We're no longer under the law." b. Position of tithing for today

1. Tithing occurred before the Law was given (see Gen. 13:20 - Abraham; Gen. 28:22 - Jacob)

2. Jesus recognized its validity: "Yes you should tithe and you shouldn't leave the more important things undone." Mt. 23:23 (LB)

4. What should I tithe?

The first part of what I earn not the last. "Honor the Lord by giving him the first part of all your income." Proverbs 3:9-10

5. Where should I give my tithe?

a. "Bring your whole tithe to my storehouse (Temple)." Mal. 3:10 b. The difference between the tithe and an offering:

Tithe = 10% of my total income Offering = anything given beyond the tithe

6. When should I tithe?

"On the first day of every week, set aside some of what you have earned and give it as an offering. The amount depends on how much the Lord has helped you earn." 1 Cor. 16:2 (LB)

7. Giving To Missions, the Poor, and Those in Need

A. The Poor: 1. "They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I

(Paul) was eager to do." Gal. 2:10 2. "He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given." Proverbs. 19:17 3. Cornelius' example Acts 10:4

Prayers and Alms (money for the poor) as a memorial 4. Mt. 6:1-4

Class 201 - Page 40

B. Missions 1. Primarily to establish works; indigenous church planting that became self-

supporting congregation seems to be the biblical norm. see Roland Allen's Missionary Methods Paul's or Ours?

2. Jesus, sometimes Paul, and others were supported by others monetarily. 8. Biblical Support for Giving to Support People in Ministry

a. 1 Cor. 9:14 "Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel."

b. 2 Timothy 5:17, 18 "The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. For the

Scripture says, "Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain," and, "The worker deserves his wages."

9. Giving With the Right Attitudes

#1 Give Willingly "For if the willingness is there, your gift is acceptable according to what you have, not according to what you don't have." 2 Cor. 9:12

#2 Give Sacrificially

"They gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability." 2 Cor. 8:3-4 see Jesus' comments on the widow who gave all she had - Mark 12:41-44

#3 Give Understanding All Your Possessions Are God's

"None of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all of his possessions." Luke 14:33 (LB)

#4 Give With Thankfulness and Cheerfulness in Your Heart

"...for God loves a cheerful giver!" 2 Cor. 9:7

#5 Give Expectantly: Give to Get to Give "Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly; and whoever sows generously will reap generously." 2 Cor. 9"6 "And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." 2 Cor. 9:8 (NIV)

"Yes God will give you much so that you can give away much... ." 2 Cor. 9:11 (LB)

#6 Give Wisely

"Budget your finances and stick to it; refuse to get into "consumer debt" (i.e. debt that is not a house or car - usually credit card debt).

The Key to Giving: "They First Gave Themselves To The Lord." 2 Cor. 8:5

Class 201 - Page 41

Prayer of Commitment Lord my finances are yours. Where I fail in trusting you to provide for me, forgive me. I choose to trust you. I choose to give to you today Lord believing you'll take care of me and my family. I choose to give the first part of my earnings to you recognizing your Lordship over all my possessions and finances. I expectantly invest in the treasure I will receive in heaven and even to whatever degree you, release it on earth. Help me, by your empowering presence, be faithful to this commitment. In Jesus Name, Amen.

The Habit of Fellowship: Participating in God's Family

"Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage each other."

Hebrews 10:25 (GN)

Class 201 - Page 43

I. WHY IS FELLOWSHIP SO IMPORTANT? 1. I in God's family with other believers.

"Let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." Gal. 6:10 "You are a member of God's very own family... and you belong in God's household with every other Christian." Eph. 2:19 (LB) The Christian who is not committed to a group of other believers for praying, sharing, and serving, so that he is known, as he knows others, is not an obedient Christian. He is not in the will of God. However vocal he may be in his theology, he is not obeying the Lord." Dr. Ray Ortland

2. I need to grow spiritually .

"Let us think of one another and how we can encourage each other to love and do good deeds." Heb. 10:24 (Ph) "Two are better off than one... If one of them falls down, the other can help him up. But if someone is alone and falls, it's just too bad, because there is no one to help him... Two men can resist an attack that would defeat one man alone. A rope made of three cords is hard to break," Eccl. 4:9-10, 12 (GN)

3. I need to grow spiritually. "People learn from one another just as iron sharpens iron." "Every day... keep encouraging one another so that none of you is hardened by the glamour of sin." Heb. 3:13 "Brothers, if someone is trapped in some sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently... Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Gal. 6:1-2

4. Christ is when we fellowship together.

"For wherever two or three have come together in my name, I am there, right among them!" Matt. 18:20 (GN)

5. There is when people pray together.

"Whenever two of you on earth agree about anything you pray for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven." Matt. 18:19 (GN)

6. Fellowship is a to the world.

(Jesus) "My prayer for all of them is that they will be of one heart and mind... so the world will believe you sent me." John 17:21 (LB)

7. I am to every other Christian.

"God has given you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other..." "There are different kinds of service to God...together you form the body of Christ and each one of you is a necessary part of it." 1 Cor. 12:5, 27 (LB)

III. Church Family Dysfunctions: How Unmet Needs Destroy Friendship and Community

A. The Church and Family B. Specific Barriers to Healthy Relationships 1. Transference: "...the term literally means to convey information or content from one person, place, or situation to another... .The usual pattern is for a person in the present to be experienced as though he or she were a person in the past. Thus transference is basically a repetition of an old object relationship in which attitudes and feelings, either positive or negative, pertaining to a former relationship have been shifted onto a new person in the present." (p. 32 Sheep in Wolves Clothing, Valerie I. McIntyre) 2. Unforgiveness and Bitterness Hebrews 12:15 - "See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many". 3. HOW TO START AND MAINTAIN GOOD HABITS

Class 201 - Page 49

STEP ONE: Desire It! You must start with a strong desire. You must be internally motivated. External motivations don't last. If you start only half-heartedly, you will never make it to the success point. STEP TWO: Just Do It! Begin right now! Don't wait. Don't procrastinate. You don't slide into a new habit. "One of these days" never arrives. You must have a starting point. It's easier to break a bad habit today than it will be tomorrow! "If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done." Eccl. 11:4 (LB) STEP THREE: Vow It! Announce your intentions publicly. Make a covenant or resolution. The power of a vow is awesome. It is particularly powerful if you put your commitment in writing. "Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them." Ps. 76:11 STEP FOUR: Preserve It! Never allow an exception until the new habit is securely rooted in your life. Each lapse will be fatal. A single slip unwinds many turns at first. Continuity and success at the start is essential. Never be swayed by "just this once". The act of yielding weakens the will and reinforces your lack of self-control. It takes 3 weeks to become comfortable with a new habit and it takes another 3 to 4 weeks (doing it daily) for it to become a part of your life. STEP FIVE: Practice It! Whenever you feel the slightest urge or prompting to practice this new habit - DO IT THEN! Don't wait. Seize every opportunity to reinforce your habit. Those feelings will not last, so whenever you feel inclined to perform your new habit, do so! STEP SIX: Be Accountable! Get a partner who will support you and encourage you. Find someone who is willing to hold you accountable and check up on you especially in the early days before the habit is firmly rooted in your life. "Let us consider and give attentive, continuous care to watching over each other, studying how we may stir up and stimulate each other to ...helpful deeds and noble activities." Heb. 1:25 (Amp) "Two are better off than one, because together they can work more effectively. If one of them falls down, the other can help him up." Eccl. 4:9-10 (GN) STEP SEVEN: Rely on Christ in You! Rely on God's power to help you establish the habit. Remember, Satan does not want you to develop habits that help you grow spiritually and make you like Christ so he will do all he can to tempt you, cause you to slip, or discourage you. Pray! "For the Spirit of God has given us...fills us with power, love, and self-control." 2 Tim. 1:7 (GN)

CONCLUSION OF THE COURSE I. Commitment

I by God's enabling grace commit to daily developing habits of praying, having time in God's Word, and giving regularly. Further I commit to being in a small group with other believers weekly. Signed Date

II. What's Next?

1. Plug in on our Sunday Celebration Service Teams 2. Get in a small group.

Pray for and find a "prayer partner" to help you maintain the "Spiritual Habits" and to become more like Christ.

4. Take Class 301 when the above items are in place.

I II. Our Desire For Corporate Maturity

We long to see hundreds of people not only commit themselves to the Spiritual Habits but be able to mentor and disciple many more new believers into these basic disciplines. We long to see hundreds of disciples plugged into small groups letting the Life of Christ in them spill over to one another and out to others who need Him. The goal of this vision is to bring glory to God by presenting Jesus Christ with as many Christlike disciples as we possibly can before He returns.

The Vineyard Family AgreementThe Vineyard Family AgreementThe Vineyard Family AgreementThe Vineyard Family Agreement

Having received Christ as my Lord and Savior and been baptized, and being in agreement with Salem Vineyard's purposes, strategy, and structure, I now feel led by the Holy Spirit to unite with the Vineyard church family. In doing so, I commit myself to God and to the other members to do the following:

1. I will protect the unity of my church ….by acting in love toward other members. ….by refusing to gossip. … by following the leaders.

"So let us concentrate on the things which make for harmony, and on the growth of our fellowship together" (Romans 14:19 PHILLIPS). "Have a sincere love for other believers, love one another earnestly with all your heart" (1 Peter 1:22 TEV). "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs" (Ephesians 4:29). "Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be no advantage to you" (Hebrews 13:17).

2. I will support the testimony of my church

…by attending faithfully. …by living a godly life. …by giving regularly.

"Let us not give up meeting together...but let us encourage one another" (Heb. 10:25). "Whatever happens, make sure that your everyday life is worthy of the gospel of Christ" (Philippians 1:27 PHILLIPS). "Each one of you, on the first day of each week, should set aside a specific sum of money in proportion to what you have earned and use it for

the offering" (1 Cor. 16:2 LB) .

"A tenth of [all your] produce...is the Lord's, and is holy" (Leviticus 27:30 NCV).

Class 201 - Page 53

3. I will serve the ministry of my church ...by discovering my gifts and talents. ...by being equipped to serve by my pastors. ...by developing a servant's heart.

"Serve one another with the particular gifts God has given each of you" (1 Pet. 4:10 Ph). "[God] gave.. .some to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up" (Ephesians 4:11, 12).

"Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who...[took on] the very nature of a servant" (Philippians 2:3, 4, 7).

4. I will share the responsibility of my church …by praying for its growth.

…by inviting the unchurched to attend. …by warmly welcoming those who visit.

"To the church--...We always thank God for you and pray for you constantly" (1 Thess. 1:1, 2 LB). "The Master said to the servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes, and urge the people there to come so my house will be full" (Luke 14:23 NCV). "So, warmly welcome each other into the church, just as Christ has warmly welcomed you; then God will be glorified" (Romans 15:7 LB).

Recognizing that I can only do the above through the power of God's Holy Spirit and that when I fail I can readily avail myself of God's forgiveness extended to me through Christ's sacrifice and righteousness; I now sign this agreement. Name: Date: Signature:
