The College Principal, Mr David Fitzgerald, has announced his resignation, leaving at the end of 2018 after accepting a prestigious position at the world’s largest K-12 education company. Mr Fitzgerald has worked closely with the College Board, Parent Development Board and Staff to establish the strategic direction of the four cornerstones of the College through the development of the College Strategic and Business Plans, Master Facility Plan and the restructuring of our operations in Chiang Mai since he has been appointed in early 2016. Undoubtedly, these strategic initiatives and focus on implementation of numerous education and leadership initiatives has the College well placed to enter its’ next stage of development.

Kardinia International College has an impressive reputation in all areas of school life including academic outcomes, curriculum, sport, performing arts and community buildings. Perhaps our finest achievement is in providing our students with a safe, friendly and caring environment that truly embraces our motto “Wisdom leads to Respect and Friendship”.

These significant achievements of the College are even more impressive given that our College is considered a moderate fee school within the local educational market. We consistently have a waiting list for places at the College, and to ensure the best educational outcomes for our students, the Board has decided to cap enrolments at around the 1900 mark.

The College Board is seeking to appoint a Principal who will offer unswerving commitment to the purpose and values of the College and dedication to develop the four cornerstones of the College. The appointee will be a well-qualified, innovative, enthusiastic educator and excellent communicator with robust character to develop the College’s top class educational environment.

It is anticipated that the new Principal will commence duty at the College in January 2019.

College Overview

Kardinia International College is a K-12 educational, non-denominational, independent school located on three campuses. The main campus is situated on 52 acres of spacious grounds with a large number of lawns, sporting ovals and well-developed gardens. It is the setting for the most impressive array of first class facilities. The College also has a Year 5 farm campus, Kardinia Grove at Lovely Banks and a Year 9 campus in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The College recently embarked on an ambitious 15-year Master Facilities Plan.

The College grew from when it began on 3 February 1996, with 31 Senior School students and 42 Kindergarten children to over 1400 students in its first seven years. The College enrolment has now stabilised and is maintained at around 1900 students. The total student population is comprised of approximately 115 Kindergarten, 485 Junior School and 1300 Senior School students.

While students live predominately in Geelong and its environs, the enrolment includes students from Western Melbourne, Colac, the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast and nearby regional centres, including Meredith and Inverleigh. The student population also includes approximately 50 overseas students from countries including Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, Korea, Japan and Malaysia.

Kardinia International College is an International Baccalaureate World school, which offers the IB Primary Years Programme to students in Years K-6, a vertical curriculum based on the guidelines of the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to students in Years 7-10 and both the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the Victorian Certificate of Education to students in Years 11 and 12.

Five groups of Year 9 students are offered an optional, “Chiang Mai Journey” programme where they go to Kardinia’s Sum Pun campus near Chiang Mai for eight weeks.

The College provides a caring environment for both day and homestay students from Kindergarten to Year 12, preparing them to be leaders and productive participants in the 21st Century. The drive for high academic excellence not only serves to give students leading and productive places in the future, but also gives rise to a wisdom and understanding that provide a foundation for our all-pervasive ethos of respect and friendship.

Every single activity within the College whether it is a matter of discipline, a musical performance or a sporting endeavour, has respect and friendship as foundation stones.

Governance

The College is owned and operated by the legal entity Kardinia International College (Geelong) Limited, a non profit public company limited by guarantee.

The College was founded by and developed on the philanthropic ideals of Mr Yoshimaro Katsumata who purchased the buildings, facilities and resources of Morongo Girls’ College in the middle of 1995. He established Kardinia International College as an incorporated non-profit entity with a Board of Directors in September 1995.

In 2008, the College purchased the site from Mr Katsumata and it is committed to continuing to manifest those ideals. The College is governed by policies approved by The Board. The College’s finances are in a very stable and healthy position.

Board members bring a diversity of talent and their vision for the College helps encourage its development and growth.

The Board delegates all authority for the management and operation of the College to the Principal, fulfilling the purpose of the College according to the policies and direction set by the Board.

The College community in living this motto, will be a sign of hope for the world and a strong proclamation that the human family can live in peace and harmony - it begins with our students and staff.

Cornerstone ThreeTo develop an environment wherein the individual student is genuinely the focus of all learning. This cornerstone involves the ideal of the individual as a life-long learner, where age is no longer related to curriculum. This ideal expresses itself in many dimensions – the celebration of the individual, the College’s renowned vertical curriculum, the multiplicity of activities and opportunities for individuals to celebrate their life.

Kardinia International College regards each learner primarily as an individual with special abilities, skills, needs, interests and goals. Accordingly, our curriculum and learning environment at each level provides programmes designed to accommodate individual aspirations and to ensure that the goal of educating the whole person is achievable. The experience of our teachers, their specialist expertise and commitment to each student ensure outstanding results.

SC1 Strategic PlanningThe Principal will work closely with the Board in the development and articulation of its overall Master Plan which encompasses the philosophy, the structure, the size, the nature of the College and the appropriate development of buildings and resources of the College. In this work, the Principal will consult with the Deputy Principal, Property Manager and staff.

SC2 Reputation and MarketingThe Principal will work continuously with every department, maintaing a high quality and positive College reputation. This element particularly relates to parents and our wider community. The Principal will work closely with the Director of Marketing and Admissions to ensure the security and stability of ongoing enrolments and the College’s reputation.

SC3 People ManagementThe Principal will be ultimately responsible for the appointment of all staff and staff conditions of service. The Principal will work closely with the Heads of School, Managers and the Human Resources Manager to develop and maintain staff morale at the highest possible level.

Key Responsibilities and Selection Criteria (SC)

SC4 Curriculum OfferingsThe Principal will oversee the efficacy of all teaching and learning, attend various conferences and maintain other links for the purpose of the incubation and development of new initiatives and best practice. The Principal will foster a healthy College spirit through the offering of a range of extra-curricular activities.

SC5 Provision of ResourcesIn line with the philosophy and direction of the College Board, and in conjunctionwith budget availability, the Principal willprioritise resource needs and allocate funds accordingly to provide the best possible set of facilities and resources possible.

SC6 Budget and Finance OperationsThe Principal will work closely with the Director of Finance and Administration and the College Board with regard to the development and maintenance of all budgets.

SC7 Assessment of EfficacyThe Principal will be mindful at all times to make both formal and informal assessments of all activities within the College Community in order to inform all future planning for the Board.

The Formal Contract will include:

• Duties and responsibilities of the Principal.

• Provision for annual review of both performance and remuneration.

• An initial term of appointment of three years.

• Provision for a future term or terms of appointment.

• Provision for long service leave.

The Remuneration Package will include:

• Salary commensurate with the nature and responsibilities of the role.

• A fully maintained motor vehicle.

• Employer superannuation contribution.

• Reimbursement of agreed expenses.

• Accommodation.

• Professional development budget.

• Relocation allowance (negotiated).

The contract of employment will be on terms and conditions commensurate with the responsibilities and challenges of the position.
