Kappa Keynotes The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International - North Carolina (NC DKG) Region VIII Kappa Chapter-Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Vol. 79, No. 1 Aug/Sep 2020 The PresidentsMessage Congratulations, Kappa! For the first time in memory, the activities and accomplishments of Kappa Chapter qualified for NC DKG’s 2019-2020 highest chapter award, Superior Achievement. We have been an active, generous and engaged chapter and this honor is well-deserved. It is worth reviewing last year’s highlights while we pat ourselves on the back and set goals for this coming year. Among our successful endeavors, Beginning Teachers received monthly notes/gifts of encouragement, as well as for all holidays. Gift bags of classroom supplies, a catered deli lunch on their birthday, and an article in the Kappa newsletter had them well supported. BTs were also given multiple teacher support handouts offering positive reinforcement words for classroom, website lists and technology applications of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Veteran Teachers received back-to-school goodie bags and notes of encouragement to start the school year and a DKG pen/stylus in June for surviving COVID Year #1. 13 of our veteran teachers and other teachers were honored with a donation in their name to NCDKG Educational Foundation. We honored sisters Clara Hedberg and Ann McCain, who are “Ladies in Their 80’s…and Still Going Strong!” in an ad in the NC DKG 80 th Anniversary Convention booklet. We donated needed items such as diapers, quilts and school supplies to Bright Blessings, volunteering an evening of community service packing items for needy mothers and children. Clara’s collection of tabs for Ronald McDonald House provided 11+ nights’ lodging for families of hospitalized children. Our chapter participated in the 2019 NC DKG Convention project, Fund$ for Florence, as well as Dollar$ for Dorian. We sent a $500 donation to an elementary school to replace library books after Hurricane Florence. The Principal there is a DKG member! We donated to multiple NC DKG scholarship funds. Members donated hygiene items, healthy snacks, gloves and scarves, and school supplies to fill 45 Christmas stockings for local inner-city children via Keeping Hope Alive. Members donated funds to purchase 465 books for Melinda’s Summer Reading project. Our donations to Schools for Africa, UNICEF, and DKG's World Fellowship Fund provided financial assistance to international educators studying in the US, preparing to be effective teachers in their home countries. We also purchased two student desks to support school attendance and educational achievement for students in Africa. We heard exceptional Guest Speakers at meetings: 2018 NEA National Teacher of the Year, 2018 NC Teacher of the Year, a Char-Meck School Board member and NC DKG President Teresa Cowan. Kappa sponsored a joint meeting of 4 local chapters, with guest speakers and dinner. We supported members attending NC DKG and DKG International conventions and NC DKG Leadership Seminar. Melinda presented a workshop at the NC DKG Convention. Lynne’s pottery and Jeannette’s photograph were accepted into the DKG Gallery of Fine Arts, on international display. Both Kappa Presidents have had an article published in the DKG Bulletin Collegial Exchange, internationally distributed. Chapter President Jeannette Carofano compiled a tutorial handbook “Writing to Legislators” for Chapter and Regional Chapters to promote legislative involvement; submitted to NC DKG for other’s reference. A long list indeed. This year, despite difficulties of logistics, we plan, again, to open our hearts, give of our talents and promote the educational welfare of children worldwide. Kappa Sisters, prepare to GROW! Sincerely, Gloria Jones & J eannette Carofano Kappa Co-Presidents 2018-2020

Going Once, Going Twice: Kappa Auction is On Gloria Jones, Kappa Co-President

The holidays are approaching and your Kappa sisters may just have that unique gift to fit your needs. Let’s do some Kappa online shopping while growing our budget! Do you have something you can donate for an online auction? For instance, a piece of Lynne’s pottery, one of Jeannette’s sister’s quilts, a set of books by a certain author or decorative plates or dishes Marilyn inherited, something Ann has knitted, Christmas crafts, picture frames, pottery pieces, gift cards you don’t want, etc. Look around and see what you can find. You may donate more than one item. The auction will take place in November. The logistics are being planned. There will be a starting bid for each item. If you would like to coordinate this or be on the committee, please let Gloria or Jeannette know. Decide if you have items to donate. An email will be sent out by the end of September asking for your response. If you don’t have an item, then please participate in the bidding. We are hoping for lots of treasures!

    CONGRATULATIONS! from Your KAPPA Sisters

Congratulations! We are so proud! Kappa’s treasured Clara Hedberg has been honored by NC DKG with their highest award, The Golden Key. Nominated by Kappa and selected as the Region VIII awardee by NC DKG, Clara was recognized for her many years of service to Kappa, education and the community. An online award ceremony was held in July and is posted on the www.ncdkg.org website. For those of you who can’t stand the suspense, Clara may be viewed at 13:46-15:07 on the tape, as well as 19:57-20:39. President Teresa Cowan acknowledged regional winners individually and will present their Golden Key pin to them personally this year.

Kappa Sisters honored Clara with a dozen red roses to celebrate her Golden Key award.

Introducing Brenda Coble, Ways and Means Chair Kappa Monthly Brag Day

Little Brags/Big Brags on the 15th of each month

Announcing new and even bigger Brags!!! Before the 15th of each month, you can send your Little Brags ($1. or more) or Big Brags ($5. or more) to Gloria Jones . She will publish these on the 15th of each month. Your brags will bring all of us joy and happiness as we celebrate with you. Little Brags are the same as what we do in our meetings -- grandchildren, finishing a quilt, or painting a bedroom -- finally. Big Brags can honor Kappa Members, Teachers, Friends, COVID Responders, or someone you know that has made a difference to you and to our world.

Make checks out to Kappa Chapter, DKG, noting “Brags” in the memo line. Mail your check to: Lynne Nadel. (Consult the Kappa Contact List we sent you for the address.)

Having missed many Bunco fundraisers this spring and coming fall, LB/BB will help compensate for the lost income we earned through Bunco.

Don’t be shy! Let us all hear your accomplishments, little or big. Brag away with abandon! Many thanks for helping to support our budget in such a meaningful way.

Reaching Out to Others Gloria Jones, Kappa Co-President Dr. Patricia Smith has returned to Brooklyn to continue as a frontline worker in this Pandemic! Thank you, Dr. Smith! A picture of one of the bedrooms is shared. We are proud of you, Sam!

Attention Virtual 2020 NC DKG “Attendees”!

This year’s DKG International Convention was a “homevention.” No hotel, no catered dinners and no hours spent on metal folding chairs. Better yet, attendance was free! Please let us know if you viewed any of the proceedings or speakers from the comfort of your couch. This will be part of our Chapter Achievement credits for this year. If you haven’t yet had the chance, videos are posted on www.dkg.org . The astronaut guest speaker was inspiring and energizing, and the art-on-the-streets speaker is one determined lady who accomplished quite a feat. Another option is to learn more about Schools for Africa, DKG’s international project. If you viewed any convention proceedings, or do so in the future, please let Jeannette Carofano know so we may include in our yearly report. Thanks!
