Kris, as preparation is key to making it a success and you have been preparing for years now. I hope everyone can aspire to put in the same amount of dedication into anything in life they wish for. To all our students going for the Decem-ber gradings both here in Brisbane and also in Gladstone, good luck, and remem-ber to relax and let your skills be on dis-play. Just do what you have been doing in class to the best of your ability and you will do just fine. Our instructors know that you can only be allowed to go for the grading if you have put the work in be-forehand. If you have trained hard and your instructor feels that your ready, then you will do well. On the other hand, if you haven’t been to class regularly and are not putting 100% in, then they will hold you back till the next grading. In achieving a belt from IMT, you represent us as a system, and we set a high stand-ard compared to a lot of other martial arts systems, so be proud of our club and know you have earned your belt through hard work, not from just showing up and going through the motions.

Next years’ calendar is already being worked on and will be ready for release early in January. Check with your in-structors to see when your classes start back–and make sure to be there on the first night. There is one block of dates that I would like everyone to mark down right away: March 29th– 31st will be our all rank training camp on the Sunshine Coast. It will be the same venue as last year: the Apex Camp at Mudjimba. Make sure you try your best to be there as these camps are, in my opinion, one of the most important dates in our training cal-endar. These are a fully catered affair with dorm-style accommodation, and all meals provided. The training sessions are full of variety, with a fun social side as well. We will no doubt go to the Aqua Park again as it was such fun last year. There will be about 12 hours of training over the weekend (about a month's or more worth actually) which will cover almost every area in our curriculum. Don’t miss this opportunity. If you are new to the club, or have never been, make sure you attend. Ask your fellow students that have been and I’m sure they will tell you how good these weekends are. There are limited numbers available so make sure when the application forms

become available that you reserve your space. Mark the date down now–and be there. For those that were not aware, I managed to tear a muscle in my forearm a couple of months ago. It is slowly healing and I look forward to being able to get back into some heavy sparring sessions next year. I miss not being able to punch and block, but there is a silver lining to this story. I have switched to a much more cardio-based training, leg stretching and even running, and have managed to lose over 7 kg so far while improving my fit-ness levels. So watch out black belts–my sparring will be on point next year. I hope the students will get to see some of my sparring with Jason, Brett, Kris...and all the others that think they can handle me. Have a great Christmas everyone and stay safe while enjoying your summer break. Try to get some training in over this holiday period, even if it is just some patterns and stretching. We look forward to 2019 and more great training with a few surprises. Till next year! Train hard, kick high and keep striving for perfection.

Kallangur crew…well what can I say. For I think the 4th biggest club you guys abso-lutely killed it! Next year we’ll be back even stronger so look out Murrumba!

So anyway good luck to all those grading, do your best and stay focused. Merry Christmas to you all, have a safe new year and I look forward to seeing you all back, strong, focused and ready to work in 2019!

Since these gradings our training has con-tinued to move forward becoming tougher and tougher each session, with the end goal of my 4th dan and of our student and black belt gradings fast approaching. I want to congratulate every student that has come to these sessions and has endured some of the not so pleasant training we’ve done. I can see a huge improvement in all my students not just in their fitness and technique but also in their focus…well done guys

Now to round 3 of the tournament where we managed to get 2nd place behind Mur-rumba Downs. Firstly to congratulate John, Max and their crew for dominating the tour-nament circuit this year, pulling off a sub-stantial win, well done guys. To the

Hello from Kallangur!

Well it’s that time of year again with our December grading well upon us, and of course end of year club break ups and Christmas. Where did the year go?

Over the past few months our training at Kallangur has stepped up significantly with Jason and Brett grading for their 5th dans, and Matthew and Daniel for their 2nd dans. A massive congratulations to all of you for a successful promotion to both 5th and 2nd dan. The high quality of martial arts demonstrated by all of you was incredi-ble…the determination to not be beaten at any stage was very inspiring.

Tournament Round 3

Saturday 10 November saw us hold our third tournament round for the year, wrapping up another fantastic tournament series, where the students get to dis-play and put into practice all the hard work they've been putting in during class. Hosted by one of our smallest clubs Ipswich, held at Murrumba Downs, and with the canteen organised and run by parents/partners from Kallangur and other clubs, this tournament epitomised the camaraderie that is IMT. It was a pleasure to man the table at the door first up in the morning, seeing so many smiling, eager, and nervous faces arrive ready to put their best foot forward and try and take home some medals. As always, the day started off with the patterns divisions, and some of the divisions were extremely closely contested. It's easy for the nerves to take over in patterns, and not only for the younger or inexperienced students......nerves can get the better of everyone. From the judging table however, it didn't look like this happened too much, and there were some won-derful displays of good hip use & technique in the younger divisions, and strength and focus through the higher divi-sions. The black belt division is always a good opportunity for the junior ranks to watch and take note of what they can achieve in the years to come. Matthew Baker at 16yo, and Daniel Lee at only 14yo took out 1st & 3rd respectively in the senior black belt division, and with the level of their patterns, it was evident how hard they had been training, being only 1 week out from grading (successfully) for their 2nd degree black belts. While some then ate lunch (which was scrumptious - compliments to the cooks/canteen helpers), the team demonstrations took place. The demos are a great way to work together as a team, with some great music, showing off all aspects of our training. It's also a great way to get all the ranks working together, and our younger students get a kick working alongside our higher ranks and black belts. Next year it would be great to see every club with at least 1 team taking part, and bring us that "x factor".

Finishing off the day as always was the sparring, and this time we ran it a little differently, however successfully. For those that couldn't make the tournament, the finals of each division were held off until the end. This not only allowed eve-ryone to be able to watch the finals and cheer their club mates on, but also gave those that may have had 2 or more consecutive spars a break before they had to fight for the gold medal. It's always a highlight of the day watching the spar-ring.....from the peewees right up to the black belts, you can see the heart, passion, and fire in the eyes of all students, while the supporters cheer them on. A special mention to Mariah Loeken, being the only female in her division, so sparring against the boys and taking out the 4th-1st grade senior "male" division.

Before announcing the big winners, it's a good opportunity to recognise every-one for all the effort it takes to organise and run the tournaments. Whether it be behind the scenes work they put in, or helping out on the day, without all the black belts turning up and chipping in, and also the help & support of families and loved ones, the tournaments would not be as successful as they are. So for that, we thank you! And now for the big winners! As this was the final tournament of the year, grand champions for each division and champion club was announced. I'd like to congratulate the following students for tak-ing home grand champion trophies in the patterns divisions: Miabelle Halpin, Flynn McGrath, Sophia Ruhe, Georgia Millar, Bethany Halpin, Mika Harden, Emma Heijboer, Alison Gillick, Heath Tapping, Kaewa Marumaru, Noah Scott, Brett McCabe, Marco Cavallo, & Mahew Baker. Grand champion win-ners for the sparring were: James Ward, Ren Sell, Zeppelin Witheridge, Charlotte Tapping, Shane Lippiatt, Aizyha Wandon, Jai Cowley, Jacob Johnston, Marco Cavallo, Noah Scott, Callum Baird, Jackson Pascoe, & Eliot Wilson. At the end of the day, there can only be 1 champion club, and this year, after hav-ing held the trophy for the past 3 years, Banyo had to hand it over to Murrumba Downs, and their proud Instructors John & Max Barron. Well done to the Murrumba team, and we look forward to seeing you all on the tournament scene next year!

2nd Degree Black Belt

Congratulations to Matthew and Daniel for getting their 2nd Degree Black Belts. It was a tough night, great display from the both of you. The year is finishing up and we are down to the last grading so everyone going for their next belt, good luck (not that you need it if your training preparation is strong). To all the guys and gals in the AMAC na-tionals, good luck! Oh, and Michael... don’t kick anyone in the face! Keep your hands up

Hello from Deception Bay. The Deception Bay club will be moving hall next year to Moreton Downs State School. It should see the club increase its number (lets hope so), and give Murrumba Downs a run for their money. Going to the tournament, well done to my students. All of my competing students won a medal which was good to see. Congratulations Kaleb Frame for finally being brave enough to compete in his first tournament and placing second in patterns. Starting at the beginning of the year when he couldn’t even line up at an all rank ses-sion, he has transformed into a new kid who is exceling in his Martial arts. But I could

not have got him there without the help of my students Issy, Katie, Jacob and Conner. They all aided in building his confidence through his training and fun at class. Our other results from the tournament were also equally pleasing. Issy placed second in patterns, Jacob Won sparring and also got grand champion for sparring. Katie and Jacob won teams demo for all 3 rounds. Pretty good for a small club! As an instructor, teaching your students a form of martial arts is rewarding knowing they can go out in the world with half a chance, but seeing your students support another student who is struggling with con-fidence without asking them to do so is a very special thing to see. That’s what The Tae Kwon Do Family is to me.

This weekend’s grading will end with quite a few hoping to achieve their Black Belt. Best of luck to all of you. You deserve the rewards that come from a lot of hard work. We at Banyo are especially excited for Paige and Lina who have both been training the house down. Paige will be the first stu-dent to come from the Li’l Kickers Club that we ran a few years back.

Finally, by the time everyone is reading this, we should also have a new 4th de-gree Black Belt. Nobody could ever doubt Kris’s determination and atten-tion to detail in his preparation for this event. All the best mate from the guys at Banyo.

All the best for Christmas and the new year. Stay safe. Cheers

This is the final newsletter for 2018, It has

been a big year again for IMT and also the

Redcliffe class. To avoid repeating myself

though, I will just stick to the moments and

events since the last newsletter, or we will

be here all day.

I will start by singing the praises of my

students for their performance and the final

round of the tournaments last month. For a

club with a smaller amount of students, we

certainly punched above our weight. I was

very pleased with our results in the spar-

ring, with 7 of our students making it to the

finals! Absolutely amazing! Congratula-

tions to you all on your hard work. It cer-

tainly paid off!

An extra congratulations to Heath, Jai,

Charlotte and Shane for winning Grand

world to me. To those who I learnt from

and trained with over the many, many years

I have been training, Thank You, you have

helped shape me into the Martial Artist I

am today. Thanks also to my students, for

their understanding and support of my need

to shift my focus away from them for a

while. I greatly helped my preparation.

To my wife Cassie, thank you for letting me

train my arse off every night. I know you

didn’t see me much, but this doesn’t happen

often. And finally, Thanks Brett for every-

thing. This grading was made even more

special because I got to do it with you.

The last part of my Thanks comes in the

form of humility and appreciation of all of

the positive and inspirational comments

from so, so many people on how our grad-

ing affected/inspired/motivated them. It

was actually quite a shock to hear to be

honest, so Thank you for that too.

As far as the actual grading goes… see

Have a safe and Merry Christmas everyone!

Champion trophies! Well done!

I would also like to pass on my congratula-

tions to the Murrumba Downs club. Well

done on winning the Club Trophy! It is

great to have another club on the winners

list.

Before I get onto my own achievements, I

would like to congratulate Matthew and

Daniel on their successful promotion to 2nd

inspiring for our younger members on what

it is possible to achieve at a young age.

Also, good luck to Kris on his upcoming

grading. I have no doubt he will give a

memorable and inspiring performance.

I will finish off by using this opportunity to

speak about my grading. I would like to

first repeat my thanks I gave on the night,

really as a way of making sure the people

who weren’t able to be there, know I was

DAN PROMOTION GRADINGS

If you think the Black Belts are looking a bit tired, you are probably right as most of them have been working pretty hard preparing for promotions as 2018 has seen some sig-nificant gradings for IMTKD. If you were not aware on 13 October 2018 both Master Instructor Jason Parker and Master Instructor Brett Parker achieved their 5th Degree Black Belt. For the Parker brothers they have both been training to-gether for over 32 years. On the night it showed, with all patterns in almost perfect timing with each other – like watching a person do a pattern in a mirror. The 4th Dan form of set sparring, which they developed themselves was incredible to watch and involved 2 attacks, 1 attack, a counter with lock or hold, countered with lock or hold. Both of them being able to adapt quickly to recog-nise the lock (or hold) and counter. To the untrained eye it may have appeared messy but to the higher grades it was incredible to witness. Considering they are both aged in their late 30’s they showed the stamina & strength of a person in their mid-20’s. This was evidence in their board & tile breaks. In self-defence and sparring they were unmatched in skill and abilities. Plus, to top it all off, with almost 3 hours on the floor they finished with a full contact spar. Photos and video do not do justice to the incredible fitness these guys showed on the day. But you can check out - www.facebook.com/moderntaekwondo/videos/499500560553085/ Plus plenty more videos on the Facebook page. Both of them acknowledged each other and how they pushed each other to get ready. To hear Jason, speak about how great it was to grade with his brother showed the true spirit of how IMTKD is not a sporting organisation… but a fami-ly. It was an effort that I think will be a long time, if ever, that I will witness again. It was an extremely hard act to follow… But Matthew Baker & Daniel Lee, maybe inspired by watching Jason & Brett, attempted and achieved their 2nd Dan on 17 Oc-tober 2018. Of all the gradings, this is a brutal assessment of your skills, abilities and fitness as a martial artist. As a parent I know it is difficult grading to watch because the person is pushed to the limits of their physical endurance…. Then have to lift a further 20%. Like Jason & Brett, it was obvious these guys trained together with patterns in per-fect timing. Their self defence routines, while rehearsed, showed a wide range of skills and abili-ties. In an effort to take it to the next level, Matthew broke a baseball bat. Despite a tough night, both Matthew & Daniel managed to get to the all rank training session the next morning completed with their shiny new Black Uniforms. Although the only muscle they were working was they face… as you could not wipe the grin off their face Given their relatively young age, these guys have a big future in front of them and all I can say is welcome to the 2nd Dan club (Or Members in Black as Mr Cameron calls us). But 2018 is not over yet. This Friday night the BBs will have another late night with Kris Ashton attempting his 4th degree promotion. Again, if the BBs are looking tired on Saturday, it is an indication Kris pushed us at his grading It has been an inspiring year to watch. John Barron

so forth. Don’t be drawn into this! One can be-come quickly distracted by locking onto their eyes and facial expression. Try very hard not to look at your opponent’s eyes!!! Finally, you will often hear me calling to a tired or slightly injured student on the floor, perhaps at the end of a very physical grading, ‘No emo-tion! No emotion!’ Yes, we get extremely tired or we are feeling pain….or both. Ask any 2nd Dan after their grading! Your mental and physi-cal toughness has to shine through on these oc-casions. Relax your face, focus on the present (situational awareness) and rise to the challenge of the spar, despite your exhaustion, nausea, bruised shin or whatever. The tears of frustration and all those emotions above mentioned, can be released very privately AFTER the spar if need be but keep it together! Keep your poker face on!!! Wishing everyone a very happy Christmas and New Year and I look forward to seeing you in 2019. Stay safe! Stay present!!

HOW’S YOUR POKER FACE? Personally, I’m fascinated by the body language of martial artists as they apply their skills be it during sparring, patterns, self-defence and set sparring. But it cannot be understated how extremely im-portant body language is in all aspects of Taekwondo, and even in daily life contexts in gen-eral. It is a powerful tool that needs to be devel-oped and refined so that, apart from your physical martial arts skills, you can gain maximum impact and a strong presence on the floor. When scoring patterns for a tournament, for exam-ple, we instructors can detect the level of focus and the level of determination being demonstrated by the student, just from what the eyes and the body are communicating. BODY LANGUAGE: Our general body language is 99% unconscious and I would assume that most of us are not aware of how and what our body is communicating to others, particularly those we are sparring against. Have a think about your own body language during a spar. Get someone to record one of your sparring matches and patterns, for example. When viewing this footage, focus on the body language you are displaying. Are you communicating submissive-ness or weakness? Are you communicating strength and determination? Are you ………??? Whilst you contemplate your own body language, have a close look at the body language demonstrat-ed by our senior black belts. No emotion is shown, no hint of their next move. They have their ‘poker faces’ on, not giving away any intent, or planned attack on you. They are totally in the moment,

strategizing, feeding off the clues your own body language (including telegraphing moves) is communicating. This presence is called ‘situational awareness’ and it is a skill highly worthy of development, particularly when performing patterns, set-sparring, self-defence and sparring. POSTURE: Posture presents itself in many forms from the way one stands, the position of the shoul-ders, the head and so forth. Slumped shoul-ders will likely indicate a range of things such as a defeatist attitude, lack of interest or engagement in the activity. The position of the chin can either indicate confidence or a lack thereof. Again, do a self-check on this aspect. Ask for feedback from your instructor and your fellow students. EYE CONTACT: The eyes are ‘the windows to the soul’ and emotion is so very easily communicated through them. My rule of thumb is to make steely-eyed contact with my opponent right to the point of the sparring commencing, upon which I then shift my focus to my op-ponent’s chest area. Focusing on this area allows me to maximise my peripheral vision – affording me the ability to see all regions of my opponent and watch for telegraphing of moves, via hands or feet. Looking into your opponent’s eyes during sparring takes your focus away from the task at hand, particularly if your opponent is showing frustration, anger, fatigue, upset and

Hello from Murrumba. It is Sunday afternoon & the grading is less than 1 week away. It is time to look back on 2018 & consider what has happened in 2018. Overall it has been a great year, with a big expansion in student numbers and of course win-ning the Club championship for the first time. I remember a few years ago with our 8-10 students thinking we will never win that championship. It was a club effort that was won through the efforts of all students. Special mention to our grand champi-ons including Noah (x2), Mika, Emma, Alison, James and Brett. Hopefully we can keep the big trophy in 2019 if we keep up the strong effort. As mentioned earlier the grading is less than a week away and I am stressing out – yes ever the instruc-tors get stressed!! Have we prepared the students, what else could I have done on the floor to make sure they are ready, will they go ok on the day. All these things keep going around & around. The grading will be a big day for IMTKD and the Murrumba club. Over ¾ of the club students will be grading. Good luck to Daniel, Yousof and Leeanne. Leeanne who joined only because she got sick of

ankle on 6/12 so will be in a moon boot until 2019 – but then hopefully I can get back into proper train-ing in 2019. A big thanks to Max, Joe, Matthew and Daniel who have helped all year. To all students, parents and friends I wish to thank you for a very successful year for the Murrumba Downs club. I do tease and nag the ones sitting on the side lines - but your cheering at tournaments and support in class helps make teaching TKL enjoyable. Please stay safe during the holiday period, drive carefully in your travels and make sure you practice the new patterns you will learn next week after the grading. Merry Xmas, Happy New Year and will see you back in class on 22 January 2018.

me nagging her Alex, Ben & Adam will be attempting their 1st grade while Connor & Gabby will be attempting their 1st degree Black Belt. In the lead up Connor (and Ben) has been attempting to finish year 12 assignments & exams together with graduation & formal. Due to this he has missed more classes than I would prefer but his physical strength will get him through on the day and this is why it takes 1 year to prepare for a Blackbelt examination. Now to Gabby, as a 13-year-old I have seen her grow significantly in 2018 both mentally and physi-cally to become very strong in the art of TKD. As I sparred her last week, I noticed my forearms getting sore, I initially put it down to lack of training due to my recent arm operation but then I realised, no Gabby was just kicking me very strong. The fact she has been doing extra classes this year really has shown through the improvement of her patterns and sparring. I wish you both best of luck for your grading day. As I say to everyone (as Mr Cameron told me) re-member a Black Belt is not the end of your training, it just means you have finished your basic training and this is the start of the real training. I expect you both to be back at training for your 2nd Dan in 2019. Myself personally, I am having an operation on my

when we get back. To make sure you are ready in the new year, remember to do some training at home. Practice your pat-terns and do some stretching. Or get togeth-er with some of your class mates and have your own holiday training session together. Every little bit helps and goes along way to keeping you sharp and fit for the New Year. Hope everyone has a safe and happy Christ-mas and New Year.

is no exception to this and we are very lucky to have 2 students attempting their Black Belt grading. We wish the best of luck to Marco and Mariah as they undertake their most challenging grading to date. A special mention for Marco who started training when he was 5 years old and will be only 10 when he takes on this massive challenge. For those students who are not quite ready for this grading do not worry. The next grading is only a couple short months after the Christmas holidays. But that means their is not a lot of class time

Another big year is nearing the end. And what a fantastic year it has been. The Bracken Ridge club has been growing from strength to strength with many new students joining and some old ones returning. As we approach the final grading its going to be a big one for many clubs, and this is evidence of how hard so many students have been training throughout the year. Bracken Ridge
