    In a lop sided society like ours

    where class and caste come in

    the way towards fulfillment of

    the basic needs, education is the

    only prospective tool that can

    provide empowerment through

    knowledge and self-realization,

    obliterate the socio-economic

    disadvantaged of marginalized

    communities and facilitate their

    holistic integration with

    mainstream society.

    The Annual Report provides an

    opportunity to reflect on the

    significance of milestones

    achieved that define KISS and

    the contribution that KISS

    makes in assisting Odisha and

    INDIA transform into a

    Knowledge based economy.

    The report also illuminates the

    important role played by

    executive members of our

    board and staff in making a

    measurable and tangible

    difference in the lives of tribal

    children and their families. It

    also indicates the further efforts needed to be taken to pool together talents, resources

    and competencies available with the mainstream public to serve more and more tribal

    children. This year has also seen challenges, scrutiny and some frank and open

    questioning of the scale, role and model of KISS. I welcome this and see it as a

    'coming of age' for KISS. It is because what we do matters, and because we do it at a

    large scale, we face challenges.

  • I, on behalf of KISS express my deep sense of gratitude to all the well wishers

    including the State and Central government for their support. We are indeed thankful

    to numerous personalities (which also include the policy makers and visitors) from

    the national and international arena for their valuable suggestions and words of

    encouragement. I would also like to put in a special “Thank you” for the love and

    affection that Shri Ramesh Kacholia and the team of Caring Friends, has bestowed on

    KISS. You have indeed been a caring friend to us and we value your friendship and

    trust. Your help and support will take KISS a long way ahead.

    I was bestowed with two great honors this past year, the highest civilian award of the

    Kingdom of Bahrain for Service to Humanity- the ISA Award and The Gusi Peace

    Prize at Philippines. I was also invited officially, the only Indian, to participate in the

    recently concluded Oslo Education Summit at Oslo. I also addressed as Key Note

    Speaker to a gathering of 350 Vice Chancellors and Policy Makers in Madrid (Spain)

    for an hour in another summit of importance. It really fills my heart with immense

    happiness and satisfaction that I have been able to sensitize several world leaders

    about "poverty alleviation through education" which we have been doing for the last

    24 years through KISS.

    Once again, I am swept with immense happiness on the United Nation's granting its

    highest recognition for NGOs - "Special Consultative Status" to KISS following

    unanimous approval of all Member Countries of the UN and passing of a resolution to

    that effect in the General assembly of the UN. KISS, 7th till date in the entire country

    to get this special UN recognition and status, went through a very rigorous scrutiny

    process beginning since 2009.

    I am overwhelmed with the magnitude of work taken, imparted and supported by all.

    With great respect & love from the core of my heart, I salute all of them. I also like to

    record my heart-felt gratitude for the contribution of KISS's Board and the committed

    cadres of workers who make the great effort called KISS a great success. I wish all

    students of KISS to be able citizens of our country. I am proud of their achievements

    and will always be behind them in their pursuit of success. I am also grateful to the

    staff and students of KIIT University and other stake holders for supporting KISS

    continuously year after year.

    Our Impact

    25,000 children from indigenous communities

    provided with free holistic education from

    primary level to Higher education. Over 2 lakh

    children and adolescents reached through

    UNFPA’s Life Skills Education and

    Adolescence Reproductive and Sexual Health

    Programme.

    KISS at a Glance:

    The state of Odisha is characterized by largest number of indigenous population constituting

    24 percent of the total population of the state. These communities have long been subjected to

    poverty and its compounding effects and continue to remain as one of the most marginalised

    and deprived sections of the society. Despite several initiatives of the government, the

    indigenous population continues to be alienated from the mainstream society. The dismal

    scenario of the highly underdeveloped tribal hinterland has been the breeding ground for

    insurgency, communal violence and becoming a heaven for old antisocial elements game

    plans. Realizing the problem behind the sluggish pace of transformation into mainstream

    society, Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) was founded by Dr. Achyuta Samanta

    in the year 1993, with the philosophy that empowerment through education is the only

    way for concrete emancipation of the tribal population of the state.

    The institute which started with only One Hundred Twenty Five tribal students in1993 has

    grown remarkably, in all dimensions, to become the only institution in the world providing

    free education from Kindergarten to Post-Graduation with vocational and extracurricular

    training, free lodging and boarding, state-of-the-art pedagogy and facilities for Twenty Five

    Thousand students of tribal origin. The major objective behind the conceptualization of the

    institute is to empower the indigenous children by free holistic and quality education. The

    students have earned recognition in academics, vocational capabilities and global recognition

    in sports also.

    Our Programs:

    1) UNFPA Supported empowering young people with Life Skills based

    Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Education Program:

    Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in partnership with United Nations

    Population Fund (UNFPA) is

    undertaking Life Skills based

    Sexual & Reproductive Health

    (SRH) education since 2009. In the

    past five years a critical mass of

    resource persons have been created

    and communication materials and

    resource tools with socio-cultural

    sensitivity have also been

    developed. In the year 2012 (Phase

    – I), this initiative was extended to

    121 residential high schools under ST & SC Development (SSD) Department

    and 17 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) under School & Mass

    Education (S&ME) Department.

    Further, during 2013 (Phase – II),

    additional 79 residential high

    schools under SSD Department

    and 84 KGBVs under S&ME

    Department were covered. In the

    year 2014, (phase –III), the

    remaining 118 SSD High schools

    and 81 KGBVs were covered

    thereby covering 500 schools (all

    318 residential High Schools

    under SSD Department and 182 KGBVs under S & ME Department) across the

    state In these schools, nodal teachers were selected and trained to undertake life

    skills based SRH sessions for adolescents (Class 6th to 9th) in fixed periods in

    the classroom. Sensitization programs were organized at district level for key

    officials and in schools for 7868 members of Parent Teacher Associations (PTA)

    and School Management & Development Committees (SMDC) on the

    intervention.

    There are around 1,500 trained nodal teachers from these 500 intervention

    schools and around 100 empanelled district level resource persons available

    across the state for promoting Life Skills based SRH education. 60 faculty

    members of teacher training institutes under SCERT (State Council for

    Education, Research and Training) were trained on LSE and SRH for further

    take up the LSE-SRH education. 500 headmasters and 32 Gender Coordinators

    were oriented and trained by the PMU-LSE – KISS in coordination with the

    District Welfare Officers (DWOs) and District Project Coordinators- Sarva

    Sikhya Abhijan (DPC-SSA) on the role and responsibilities of HMs for

    implementation and strengthening the program in schools.

    At KISS level, all 30 planned

    LSE-SRH sessions were organized for

    the students of 6th to 9th class on a

    weekly basis in a fixed period. Peer

    Educators facilitated SRH issues both

    formal and informal settings among

    their peers at college level with

    guidance of teachers. The sanitary

    napkin unit was further strengthened

    at KISS. The sweepers and hostel

    attendants were sensitized on safe disposal of used sanitary napkins and use of

    incinerators. The fixed counseling sessions (individual and in group) were

    organized by the trained Teacher- Counselors and 603 students were benefited.

    Ninety (90) Peer Educators organized community level awareness building

    programs on SRH issues during summer vacation through creative

    communication activities under the guidance of PMU-LSE on pertinent issues

    like substance misuse, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, dowry, gender

    An activity underway at the teachers training programme

    discrimination, RTI/STI, HIV/AIDS etc. The activities like role play, street

    theatre, public rally, public meetings, adolescent meetings, drawing

    competitions, creative writings etc. In these community levels, awareness

    programs around 2700 adolescents and young people participated. These

    awareness camps had tremendous impact on the target group. The stakeholders

    like PRIs ASHAs, AWWs, ANMs, SHG members and school teachers also

    participated in these community level activities and provided guidance to the

    adolescents.

    The best practices and learning from LSE-SRH programme were shared in

    different platforms at state level like annual tribal festival (Adivasi Mela) and

    annual tribal student’s conclave (Sargifool). During launching of national

    adolescent health strategy, organized by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare,

    Government of India on 7th January 2014, at New Delhi, the experience of KISS

    in promoting life skills based SRH education in residential schools was

    presented. Apart from that, in the 7th Asia specific conference on reproductive

    and sexual health and rights (APCRSHR) at Manila, Philippine in January 2014,

    the experiences of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences as a resource institution

    for promoting

    life skills based

    SRH education

    was presented.

    So, also KISS is

    recognized as

    an institution

    for promoting

    girl child

    education by

    DASRA,

    Mumbai.

    2) English Access Micro Scholarship Programme

    For some, language is a road to upward mobility and for others it is a barrier to

    even the marginal life of choice and dignity. English language today, in India, is

    a symbol of people’s aspiration for quality education and a fuller participation

    in the national and international spheres. In this age of information and

    globalization the knowledge of English language is a source for better career,

    better pay, advanced

    knowledge and for

    communication with the

    entire world. On one hand

    while the demand for the

    language increases, the

    quality of English language

    education for the

    indigenous children in

    rural areas presents an

    abysmal picture. KISS through its English Access Micro-scholarship has been

    bridging the gap of

    quality English

    Language

    proficiency for the

    indigenous children

    at KISS. The English

    Access Micro-

    scholarship

    Programme is a

    remarkable initiative

    of the U.S

    Department of State.

    The English Access Micro-scholarship Programme was launched in the

    year 2010 at KISS with the purpose of upgrading students’ skill in reading,

    writing, speaking and listening in English and appreciation of American &

    Indian Democratic principles and culture. The programme has been successful

    in gradually building

    up the communication

    skill in English. This

    programme is being

    implemented for the

    third time in KISS.

    Currently the program

    provides a foundation

    of English language

    skills to 550 talented

    students between the

    age group of 13 to 20

    years from disadvantaged section and gives participants English skills that lead

    to better jobs and educational prospects in their future endeavors. The Access

    classes have changed the inhibition of our tribal students to speak in a foreign

    language into interest and learn the language. Today, they can communicate

    fairly about the day-to-day affairs in English. Enhancement activities like

    exposure visits are

    also adopted.

    Several innovative

    teaching aids have

    been prepared to

    motivate the

    students to shed off

    their fear and learn

    the language. Free

    classroom

    interaction among

    themselves and with

    the teacher has also enriched their word power or vocabulary. The Access

    Program has also helped build their personality. The tribal students have not

    only been able to communicate but also have performed in English Plays, Skit,

    Songs, Mock Assembly, Anchoring when National and International dignitaries

    visit KISS which include Academicians, Corporate Leaders, Writers, Activists,

    Legislators, Magsaysay award winners, Diplomats from various countries

    including United States of America etc. This had a spill-over effect in raising the

    performance in their regular academic activity. Many of our English Access

    tribal students have been successful in joining specialized higher education like

    Law, Engineering(B .Tech), Medicine(MBBS), Diploma in various engineering

    trades and Social Sciences. It is unprecedented that the benefit of Access

    Program has touched students from different tribes consequently acquiring

    higher studies which need a high degree of English proficiency. Largely Access

    Program in KISS has curbed the further alienation and has contributed to

    mainstreaming of Tribal children. Many dignitaries from US Embassy have also

    visited KISS.

    Three Students have had the opportunity to visit the United States of America

    through this programme. The English Access Program has also provided

    immense opportunity to its faculty members with three faculty members

    touring the United States of America in as many programme of the project.

    3) Mother Tongue based Multi Lingual Early Childhood Education

    More than 25,000 children from 62 indigenous communities are studying in

    KISS, where more than 24 languages with varieties of vernaculars they speak

    having their own cultural identity. These languages as a whole, cultures are

    strongly associated with their identity and ethnicity. Out of the total students

    reading in KISS, 1,500 kids were admitted in class 1 who represents the above

    linguistic groups were facing severe language problem while interacting with

    their new friends considering their age group. Their interaction was confined

    to their parents, family members, neighbours and to some extent rare outsiders

    only. The environment after

    admitting in KISS school is a

    challenge for administering

    them where the child interfaces

    with a variety of languages in

    one place which is completely

    new to the child. To bridge the

    gap between the home

    languages and the school

    language and accommodate the mindset of the kids, an attempt has been made

    by KISS with the support of Bernard van Leer Foundation (BvLF) by

    introducing a developed teacher’s hand book, transition curriculum and well

    trained teachers taking a time period of 90 days.

    Odisha is home of 62 tribes including 13 particularly vulnerable tribal groups,

    who speak their own dialects which are entirely different from mainstream

    Odia. This, coupled with difficult geographical, demographic and socio cultural

    factors make it difficult for children from tribal communities to learn

    mainstream languages. Thus, when children from these tribal groups come into

    mainstream schooling, learning becomes a challenge as they do not understand

    the language which is the medium of instruction. Instruction through a

    language that learners do not speak has been called “submersion” because it is

    analogous to holding learners under water without teaching them how to swim.

    Compounded by chronic difficulties such as low levels of teacher education,

    poorly designed, inappropriate curricula and lack of adequate school facilities,

    submersion makes both learning and teaching extremely difficult, particularly

    when the language of instruction is also foreign to the teacher.

    Mother tongue - based multilingual programs promotes the use of the mother

    tongue in the early years so that

    students can acquire and

    develop literacy skills in

    addition to understanding and

    participating in the classroom.

    It offers significant pedagogical

    advantages, and when children

    are offered opportunities to

    learn in their mother tongue,

    they are more likely to enroll

    and succeed in school and their

    parents are more likely to communicate with teachers and participate in their

    children‘s learning.

    Taking all these factors into

    consideration and towards

    achieving its commitment to

    fulfil Millennium Development

    Goal of ensuring quality

    education to all students, Kalinga

    Institute of Social Sciences, in

    collaboration with Bernard van

    Leer Foundation, is instituting

    the first Early Childhood

    Development Program through Mother Tongue based multilingual learning in

    the state. It is for the first time in Odisha that such an initiative has taken place

    within the premises of a residential school. This program not only aims to

    improve the quality of education of children getting enrolled into KISS, but also

    aims to be the first Centre of Excellence on mother tongue based early

    childhood education in the state.

    4) Young women Social Entrepreneurship Development Programme

    British Council in partnership with Diageo has launched the Young Women

    Social Entrepreneurship

    Development

    Programme which is

    being implemented at

    KISS. This programme

    master trainers who will

    then cascade their

    knowledge by training

    aspiring and early-stage

    female social entrepreneurs in India.

    Two Master trainers were selected from KISS who attended the training

    programme at IIM Kozhikode for the British Council Young Women Social

    Entrepreneurship Program.. The training module s designed by British Council

    dealt with a range of topics which included: Beginning a Social

    Enterprise, Need Analysis, Challenges of Social Enterprise, Marketing

    Strategies, Accounting for Social Enterprise, Legal and Policy issues, Project

    Management, Business Plan, Work life Balance, Innovative Models for Social

    enterprise and Mentoring.

    The first phase of the British Council ‘Young Women Social Entrepreneurship

    Program’ consisted of girls students varying from the age group of 18 to 23

    years from Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, which is a home to 25,000

    indigenous students from indigenous populated districts of Odisha and nearby

    states. The other three batches of the 1st phase had 75 women who were selected

    from different districts of odisha and were part of self help groups or self

    employed. They were highly motivated to be a part of the training program as

    they felt that such a training program would help them gain more insights and

    more information about starting their social enterprises.

    All of these young girls from KISS went through a process of selection where

    they were individually interviewed about what they understood of the program

    and why did they want to be a part of such a training program. These girls

    studying at the institute all belong to families which fall under the below

    poverty line category. All students who are part of the First Phase 1st batch of

    training program are studying in varied streams like sociology, commerce,

    anthropology etc. After completing their education most of them aim to go back

    to their respective indigenous communities as change agents to influence the

    social and economic patterns of their communities. One of the main purposes

    for being a part of the training program for the girls was that they wanted to

    learn more about newer avenues that they can set forth on after completion of

    their education. Social Entrepreneurship, for most of them, was a new concept

    but on discovering the meaning of the same, the girls felt that they were ready

    for a new challenge. Coming from families where resources are scarce and from

    communities in which changes in many factors are yet to be seen, some of these

    girls want to do something worthwhile for their villages and the women there.

    All of the girls who were a part of the first batch of the training program are

    first generation learners from their respective communities, exposed to higher

    education and a city life. However, irrespective of the many changes that they

    have had to face in their course of their education journey they want to make

    good use of the experience and use it for their benefit in future.

    2ND PHASE OF BRITISH COUNCIL’S YOUNG WOMEN SOCIAL

    ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

    In the second phase of Young Women Social Entrepreneurship Development

    Program which was held

    from the 8th of May 2015

    till 16th of May 2015, 50

    young girls and women

    were selected from

    Kalinga Institute of Social

    Sciences to be a part of the

    training. The process of

    selection was done on the

    basis of personal

    interviews and motivation

    on behalf of the participants to be a part of the training program. Most of the

    participants had some experience of vocational training from the parent

    institute. The participants took active interest in the training program and learnt

    a lot about staring their own social enterprises after they finished their

    education at KISS and went back to their villages. The participants felt that such

    training programs should be imparted to more young girls like themselves

    because they were all from indigenous families and from families which have

    very low financial sustainability. They also felt that women needed to get such

    training because they could in turn make something out of their lives and help

    others in the society as well.

    5) Australian Rules Football

    KISS, added another feather to its cap by becoming the latest to embrace

    Australian Rules Football as they welcomed ARFAI officials to organise an

    introductory training session at the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS)

    campus in Bhubaneshwar. It was another project that the American Centre

    initiated with the Australian High Commission in India under their Direct Aid

    Program (DAP) grant. KISS had applied for this project along with ARFAI.

    Under this project, ARFAI officials will

    train senior students at KISS to be

    coach, who will in turn help in

    training at least 1500 children by the

    end of this calendar year. The

    Australian Rules Football is close to its

    cousin Rugby, which KISS has

    mastered and boasts of being World Champions in different age groups.

    The 3 day session led by ARFAI officials comprised of indoor and outdoor

    sessions where 16 senior students from KISS were trained as coach. These

    coaches will train the children for the next few months with periodical ARFAI

    supervision as part of the project which culminates with the first ever state

    to see and they picked up on

    pointers given by the officials

    very swiftly. The coaches

    were also acquainted with

    coaching methods which

    need to be employed while

    they conduct the trainings.

    The final day, saw a more

    than 700 students attending training with the newly appointed coach of KISS, It

    was an experience like no other. The students were brimming with energy and

    willing to experience the sport.

    The highlight of the final day was a visit by the Hon’ble Founder, Dr. Achutya

    Samanta. He was delighted t o see the positive response and provided the coach

    and children words of encouragement and a promise for further such

    opportunities in the future. He was also delighted to see that KISS Students will

    comprise wholly in the first ever ODISHA team who will participate in the

    ARFAI National Championship 2015 later this year. The day culminated in a

    friendly match between the coaches. Although the match was conducted to

    bring them up to speed with the basic game play rules, they showed

    exceptional grasp of the basic skills even at such an early stage.

    KISS has always given very high importance towards

    Academic excellence and providing various opportunities to

    the students. The students have benefitted from this policy of

    KISS and have done extremely well in academics and co

    2) Microsoft Inspire School Programme

    KISS was the venue for the Microsoft

    Inspire school Programme for the year

    2014. The programme was convened by

    Microsoft Toxiz Link and Ganapati Sabat

    Waste, Energy, Water, Urban Transport

    system, Pollution were thematically

    discussed. KISS also bagged the

    3) Red Cross KISS Branch

    As always the Red Cross society of KISS has been instrumental in various

    activities. The Junior wing of the Red Cross Society stood 2nd for their

    performance on a one act play on swatch Bharat Abhiyan.

    GREEN initiatives:

    1. A 550KWp Solar Photovoltaic Plant

    (SPV):

    In an initiative to promote green /clean

    energy KISS has installed 550KWp Solar

    Photovoltaic system in its campus. This

    system is meeting more than 70% of its

    energy demand during daytime. This is regarded as one of the largest rooftop

    installation in any institute in India. It

    fulfills our commitment towards a greener

    and cleaner environment. Further it plays a

    vital role in reducing CO2 emission &

    saving substantially.

    2. 10,000 litre Solar Water Heating System:

    KISS has installed 10,000 litre capacity solar

    water heating system in its campus. This

    hot water is used in the kitchen for different

    purposes, resulting in saving energy and

    reducing our fossil fuel dependence,

    thereby adding to our clean energy

    initiative.

    3. 1000kg capacity BIOGAS Plant:

    KISS being a residential campus, produces

    a lot of food waste. In an effort to convert

    this food waste into useful energy, KISS

    has built a 1000 kg capacity Biogas plant.

    The product from this plant is fed to our

    kitchen to supplement cooking activity.

    4. Fully Mechanized Steam based Kitchen:

    Food preparation for 25,000 students is no mean task and needs full dedication

    of manpower and technology. It is also

    of paramount importance to cook the

    food hygienically. Looking at the

    volume and hygiene issues, KISS

    installed a fully mechanized steam

    based kitchen which serves the purpose

    by reducing time of cooking,

    minimizing fuel & preparing hygienic

    food by directly using steam in cooking vessels.

    5. 1000 kld Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP):

    KISS has a huge responsibility towards keeping the campus clean. The amount

    of human waste/ Sewerage produced

    on a daily basis is humongous. In

    order to have a healthy environment

    KISS has commissioned a Sewerage

    Treatment Plant (STP). After passing

    through different phases of the STP,

    the treated water is utilized towards

    agricultural use and flushing purposes.

    6. Mechanised Laundry:

    KISS is also installing a fully mechanized

    Laundry to enable the students to clean

    clothes. It plays an important role in

    minimizing the use of water. It also reduces

    Important Collaborations

    United Nations Population Fund

    (UNFPA): KISS in partnership with United

    Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is

    implementing a project on “Empowering

    young people with life skills through

    building institutional capacity, imparting

    life skills education and broadening

    research base for Adolescent Reproductive

    and Sexual Health (ARSH) and Life Skill

    Education (LSE)” for about 10,000

    adolescents in the institute and more than

    200,000 across the state. The program aims

    to ensure the vulnerable tribal children’s

    safer, informed and rewarding growing up

    process.

    United Nations Children’s Fund

    (UNICEF): UNICEF in association with

    KISS has established a Children

    Development Resource Centre (CDRC) as

    part of the larger UNICEF-KIIT University

    joint initiative for the Centre for Children

    Studies (CCS). The goal is to promote

    evidence-based policy making by building

    a knowledge base through action research

    and other development programmes on

    children’s issues focusing on the state of

    Odisha. Hence a resource center at KISS

    has been established for the students and

    research scholars.

    US Embassy India: Recognizing the

    mission of KISS and contribution to

    empower poorest of poor, the US Embassy

    sponsored “English Access Micro

    scholarship Program”. The program has

    been successful in gradually building up

    writing, reading, listening & speaking skills

    in English, for a group of selected students

    of KISS. The program provides a

    foundation of English language skill to 550

    talented students.

    The Centre for American studies stands as

    an example of Indian-American

    collaboration in the field of education. The

    centre offers students the opportunity to

    explore more about the United States-its

    history, politics, culture etc. It provides a

    window onto the various options available

    to the students in higher education

    especially concerning American studies. It

    also works as a research centre and has

    been a venue to various seminars and

    lectures in the past and we aspire to

    continue to do so in the future

    Foundation has started the Mother tongue

    Based Multilingual Education (MT based

    MLE) to address the need of the

    indigenous children who are enrolled in

    the school. The organization has set up a

    language lab in which indigenous children

    are taught in their own mother tongue so

    that they relate to their own culture and

    identify when they first enrolled in school.

    ORACLE Education Foundation: As per an

    agreement with Oracle Education

    Foundation; competition, professional

    development projects, Think Quest

    library, local competitions, etc. will be held

    regularly by KISS under ORACLE’s Think

    Quest programme. This program is

    instrumental in making students face

    competitions in different streams

    consequently to grow and seek

    opportunities for development.

    Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS):

    The MoU between TISS and KISS aims to

    establish a framework for collaborative

    partnership on mutually agreed areas by

    promoting and co-opting human resources

    for undertaking research, curriculum

    and pedagogy development, livelihood &

    skill building, counseling, training

    program, seminar and workshops for

    teachers and students, certificate and

    diploma programmes and provide input

    mechanisms for policy development. This is

    also helping in capacity development of

    teachers along with providing holistic

    education to the tribal children.

    Give India: KISS is accredited with Give

    India. The main aim of Give India is to

    promote an effective and efficient giving

    culture that provides greater opportunities

    to the poor in India. It is a vibrant

    ‘philanthropy marketplace’ to ensure that

    the most effective and efficient nonprofits

    get access to resources. After a thorough

    scrutiny, KISS has been listed under Give

    India and gets support for various

    activities.

    British Council: British Council in

    partnership with Diageo has launched the

    Young Women Social Entrepreneurship

    Development Programme which is being

    implemented at KISS. British Council also

    provides E- library facilities which are

    availed by the tribal students. The students

    avail academic and non academic literature

    and reference materials.

    Hanseo University of Republic of Korea:

    Hanseo University has been associated with

    KISS on various fronts, Mentor programs,

    Vocational training, sponsorships and other

    aspects which has helped in the

    development of children of KISS. Hanseo

    University is also providing Hanseo Mentor

    Scholarships to these students. It is also

    supporting the Girls Rugby team. They

    have been instrumental in capacity building

    of the institution (KISS).

    Credibility Alliance/ Guidestar: KISS is

    accredited with Credibility Alliance and

    Guidestar. Through these accreditations,

    KISS is committed towards enhancing

    Accountability and Transparency in the

    sector through good governance.

    National Mineral Development

    Corporation (NMDC): National Mineral

    Development Corporation (NMDC) in

    colaboration with KISS is setting up a fully

    free residential school for tribal children at

    Kanker in the state of Chhattisgarh. The

    work for NMDC-KISS residential school is

    in progress. The school will follow Central

    Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)

    curriculum with strength of 4000 poor

    tribal students.

    Tata Steel Limited: KISS and Tata Steel

    have agreed to strengthen the relationship

    between the industry and the institutions

    by developing collaboration in various

    academic, research, training and staff

    development activities. They will also

    facilitate education of the children of the

    displaced families at KISS and work for

    upliftment of the marginalized vulnerable

    sections of the population.

    AFS Intercultural Programs, India: KISS

    along with KIIT University and KIIT

    International School, have collaborated

    with AFS Inda, to provide opportunities

    for students to study abroad, and to also

    provide international students to do

    Internships and volunteering at KISS.

    The event witnessed a congregation of more than 50,000 people which included

    the parents and guardians of the indigenous children at KISS. This event was

    Like every year the authorities at KISS made elaborate arrangements for the

    reception of the parents in the event. KISS had arranged for the food,

    accommodation and transport of the parents.

    2) International Conference on Tribal People in the 21st Century

    The centre for American studies, Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences organized

    an International Conference to deliberate and discuss issues challenging the

    tribal people in the 21st century.

    The main theme of the conference

    was “Tribal People in the 21st

    century: Problem and Prospects.”

    The conference was supported by

    KIIT University and United

    Nations Population Fund

    (UNFPA). The conference was

    attended by Ambassadors and

    other diplomats representing

    nineteen different countries, Noted Academicians, Administrators,

    Developmental Specialists, Members of parliament and Legislative Assembly,

    Representatives of UN bodies and host of other participants. Shri Jual Oram ,

    Hon’ble Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, Government of India was the Chief

    Guest for the opening session. All together the conference was divided into two

    panel discussion sessions. Panel 1

    “Empowering tribal girls and

    women: Experiences and

    Challenges” and Panel 2 “Alienation,

    Poverty and Cultural Identity of

    Indigenous People”. Various

    speakers including ambassadors,

    Politicians and academicians

    deliberated in these two sessions. The conference was a grand success and

    paved the way for many more conferences to be organized by KISS in the

    future.

    3) Conference on Education for All

    The Centre for American Studies , Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences ( KISS)

    organized an International

    Conference on “Education for

    ALL” of the Millennium

    Development Goals (MDG) from

    14th-16th of February, 2015 . The

    Conference was attended by

    noted academicians, Scholars and

    Fulbright scholars from all over

    the world doing their research

    study in India. Some of the

    important themes of the conference were “Language and Culture in Schools”,

    “Issues in Education”, “Poverty and Health” and “ Poverty and Empowerment.

    The Conference welcome address was delivered by the Hon’ble Founder of

    KIIT/KISS Dr Achyuta

    Samanta and the

    USIEF Ms Piya

    Bahadur. The keynote

    address was however

    delivered by the

    Fulbright scholar Prof

    Christine Finnan, who

    carried her research

    on KISS. The

    conference was the

    first of its kind in Odisha wherein such great numbers of Fulbright Scholars

    made their presence and participated to take the discussions on education

    forward.

    4) Seminar on Tribal Adolescents (UNFPA Delhi)

    A Conference on “Reaching Out to Tribal Adolescents: Needs, Priorities and

    Response” was held on 20th January 2015 in New Delhi, UNFPA office in

    which eminent speakers were invited to present their experiences. The seminar

    had presentations by a panel of members comprising of Prof. Sachidananda

    Sinha, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Dr. Shanta Sinha from MV Foundation,

    Ms. Amrita Sharma, Aajeevika Bureau and Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Kalinga

    Institute of Social Sciences to deliberate on the Institute’s vision for educating

    tribal adolescents girls. Dr Samanta highlighted the importance of educating

    young adolescence girls in addressing socio-economic issues. Two women

    achievers from KISS Ms Amrita Naik, a tribal student from Gajapati district

    pursuing her BBA at KIIT University and Ms Seema Hansdah, from the tribal

    district of Mayurbhanj and pursuing her MBA presented their wonderful

    journey from a small tribal village to being at KISS . The intellectual crowd

    present at the forum applauded and appreciated the work done by KISS in

    promoting and empowering girls.

    5) Celebration of International Mother Language Day:

    21st February 2015 vwas celebrated

    as the International Mother

    Language Day by Mother Tongue

    based multilingual education

    project (supported by Bernard van

    Leer Foundation) at KISS. Around

    5000 primary students of different

    tribal communities studying here

    participated in the mega event. The

    Founder of KIIT & KISS along with other senior officials were present at the

    6) KISS participates in World Education forum conference held at Incheon

    “World Education Forum 2015” was hosted and co-organized by UNESCO,

    UNDP, UNICEF, UN WOMEN, UNHCR, UNFPA & The World Bank at

    Incheon, Korea. Ms. Priyadarsini

    Mohanty, participated and

    represented KISS at that forum. She

    participated in different plenary

    sessions and also got the chance to

    know different quality education

    practices from different counties that

    participated and the technical

    support given by different UN

    agencies for projects. Apart from the

    above technical sessions she got chance to have personal and small group

    interaction with many education ministers from India, Japan, China, South

    Korea, Africa, Ghana, Kenya. The highlight of the conference was a meeting

    with Nobel laureate from India Mr Kailash Satyarthi.

    7) KISS has its first Full Bright Scholar

    Renowned Professor in Anthropology, Christine Finnan spent 6 months at KISS

    doing extensive research on the

    institute and its activities. She arrived

    in Bhubaneswar for this purpose with

    her lawyer husband George. Having

    passed Anthropology from Stanford

    University, USA and being a professor

    by occupation, she was eligible to be a

    research Scholar under the Full bright

    program.

    The Fulbright Program is highly competitive, merit-based grants for

    international educational exchange for students, scholars, teachers,

    professionals, scientists and artists, founded by United States Senator J. William

    Fulbright in 1946. Under the Fulbright Program, competitively selected U.S.

    citizens may become eligible for scholarships to study, conduct research, or

    exercise their talents abroad; and citizens of other countries may qualify to do

    the same in the United States. The Fulbright Program is one of the most

    prestigious awards programs worldwide, operating in over 155 countries. Fifty-

    three Fulbright alumni have won Nobel Prizes.

    8) International Internship and Voluntary Program (IIVP)

    A host of students and research scholars are invited at KISS under its

    International Internship and Volunteer Program. This year was no different

    with students from United States, Korea and other places visiting KISS to take

    up study in a few chosen fields. Some of them are

    Hanseo University – Students from

    Hanseo University come twice a year to

    do voluntary services and other activities

    with children of the school. This year

    they also volunteered to do some social

    work outside the school. Along with the

    staff of KISS, they visited the beach and

    cleaned the beach near Konark. They

    were also involved with other activities at KISS.

    Girisha Arora- A student of grade 11th of Welhams Girls School, who

    conducted a study on KISS from the period Dec 2014- Jan 2015. She was

    actively involved with the students at KISS. She took classes of students,

    conducted quiz classes and was also involved in case study research.

    Atte Kinnan - A student of architect from Sweden, came to KISS under the IIVP

    program with basic objective of developing a blueprint of schools in the

    districts. He was basically interested to develop new architectural designs for

    KISS model schools which could be cost effective and sustainable. His working

    period was from Jan to March 2015.

    Shreya Biswal - A student from an International school in New Delhi , studying

    in the 11th grade completed a project report on Mother tongue based Multi-

    Lingual program under the IIVP program. She was here for 10 days.

    9) KISS Immunization Camps

    KISS has been immunizing students

    in the age group of 5-7, with MMR,

    DPT and Hepatitis Vaccinations every

    year in partnership with Max India

    Foundation. The Immunization camps

    are held twice a month with around

    500 children vaccinated each month.

    Doctors from the Paediatric

    department of KIMS along with the

    Immunization team are involved during these camps. MAX India Foundation

    provides with the vaccines and volunteers to carry out the camps successfully.

    Each year around 1500 - 1600 children are vaccinated through these camps. This

    year around 980 children were immunized with MMR vaccines and 600

    children were given Hepatitis vaccines. The children thus are provided with the

    best of health care at KISS. Apart from this Children are also administered other

    vaccines with donations received through Give India and other sources.

    Learning the art of film makeing

    Mussoorie. LBSNAA is the premier institution in India which trains the officers

    of the Higher Civil Services of the country. The 2014 Batch comprised 183 IAS

    Officer Trainees including three from the Royal Bhutan Civil Services (RBCS).

    He covered one of the topics of the Health and Education Module taught to the

    Phase I Officer Trainees. Using his experiences of Kalinga Institute of Social

    Sciences (KISS), he addressed the trainees on ‘Innovations in Education and

    Health-Reaching the unreached’. He elaborated on how the KISS model can be

    replicated by other States in India so that it can have a wider community

    impact. While answering to the questions raised by the Officer Trainees, Dr.

    Samanta explained how he managed to raise funds for his institution and

    concluded his talk emphasizing on the kind of support and cooperation that

    private sector initiative like his own needs from the government wings.

    11) CIFEJ Board Meeting

    The International Centre of Films for Children and Young People (CIFEJ) is an

    international nongovernmental organization emerging from the conference

    held by UNESCO in Edinburg in 1955 and is known as «Centre International de

    Film pour l’enfance et la

    Jeunesse-CIFEJ.

    CIFEJ was founded under the

    auspices of UNESCO in order to

    promote excellence in the

    production of culturally diverse,

    entertaining, artistic,

    educational and informative

    audio-visual media especially

    designed for children and young

    people.

    CIFEJ is working actively to contribute to the achievement of the humanitarian

    aims of UNESCO:

    - Developing understanding among nations;

    The board meeting was hosted by KIIT University and KISS. The meeting took

    place from the 15th

    till the 20th of

    January 2015. Along

    with the meeting the

    directors held a

    workshop with

    selected students of

    KISS and worked on

    making two

    animation movies

    and two

    documentary movies

    on the students. During the workshop the children were taught how to make

    animation movies and documentaries. Apart from the board meeting and the

    workshop, the visiting board members also held screening of international and

    national children movies for the children at KISS which the children really

    enjoyed watching.

    12) Police Training program

    The Commissionerate police conducted a police training for the lower police

    officials starting with the havildars , constables and ASI to SI levels with the

    objective of changing the behavior, conduct and response of the police towards

    the public. This training program is an extention to the community policing

    approach of the commissionerate

    police which aimed at changing

    the image of the police by

    imparting training in yoga ,

    meditation, time management,

    parenting and positive

    psychology. A research carried

    out by the project & Research

    team, KISS in almost all the police

    stations including the solely existing Mahila Police station stressed the need for

    such a training.

    Objective

    To sensitize, change the outlook and behavioural practises of police

    personnel and motivate them to bring about a positive attitude in

    themselves.

    To impart training on subjects like : Yoga and Meditation, Time

    Management, Understanding one self, Human Rights and Understanding

    others, Concept of Right to Life with dignity, Life styles disorders, Stress

    Management, Positive Psychology, Parenting etc.

    Proposed outcome

    It will have an impact on the overall attitude and conduct of the police.

    The training modules like yoga and meditation will have a healthier

    impact on the police officials if taken up on regular basis

    13) Cultural Activities

    Co-curricular activities of KISS bring out the hidden talents of the students to

    the fore. These activities provide a platform to the students to exhibit their

    potential and excel in their extra-curricular

    passions. Various cultural programs are

    regularly organized to provide a platform to

    students to showcase their talents through

    dance, drama, music and other performing arts.

    In order to retain the cultural heritage of Odisha

    as well as making the students feel regarding

    the significance of those festivals, KISS

    organizes festive atmosphere for its students. Students from various tribes

    celebrate tribal festivals like Sakrat Parab, Maghe Parab, Chaita Parab etc.

    and other festivals like Jagannath Rath Yatra, Holi, Diwali, Raksha Bandhan,

    Basant Panchami etc. with traditional fervor thereby ‘Celebrating Diversity’.

    In order to encourage the students film stars of Odisha are also invited to

    celebrate the occasion with tribal children of the institute

    14) KISS Satellite Centers

    Various activities have been undertaken to sensitize the populace in all the

    tribal dominated districts of Odisha, Activities ranging from forming village

    level committees, Survey on various parameters at the District Block and

    Village levels, identification of needs and beneficiaries, Creating awareness on

    Education, Health & Hygiene.

    KISS Celebrates Independence Day. The day was marked with the students taking part in

    March past and various cultural events.

    The Road Ahead:

    KISS has been envisioning transforming the institute into a Tribal University in the coming years

    which would be the only university for tribal in the state providing free residential education. KISS

    aims to lay the foundation stone for building the edifice of tribal development.

    Over the next five years KISS has been planning to increase its outreach in the state by setting up

    KISS model schools in all the districts of Odisha, beginning with the districts with higher marginalized

    population. Further it aims to strengthen the district schools by building partnerships and collaborating

    with the government and non-government agencies. The establishment of KISS has created an interest

    and a demand for education among the underprivileged tribal population. With each year passing by

    the number of students getting enrolled into the institute has been increasing. With the demand for

    education among the tribal increasing it becomes a little difficult for KISS to accommodate all the
