Innovative Leadership: UAE National Innovation Strategy
• Teams formed for seven key sectors identified for innovation: renewable energy, transport, health, technology, water and space
• Other teams: Dubai Future Accelerator, Dubai Future Foundation, International Center for 3D Printing, Dubai Hyperloop
• Have integrated teamwork from the public and private sectors
HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
• Current annual investment in innovation id Dh 14 billion in UAE. Dh 7 billion goes to R&D
• Innovation spending will rise significantly in the years come
• Government entities to reduce spending by 1% and to invest the savings into research and innovation projects
• Dubai Future Accelerators (DFA) committed to invest 1 billion dirhams ($275 million) over the next five years
• Partnership contest for hyperloop design: Build Earth Live
• 19 specialized local and international bodies to develop new education system based on creativity and innovation
• Partnership review with Stanford University on their methodology of teaching innovation, entrepreneurship and design thinking
• Future Partnership Program
16 indicators to measure progress• Government-sector indicators: % of innovative ideas
and the proportion of budget allocated to innovation.• Private-sector indicators: R&D investment and the
knowledge profile of the workforce.
• Global indicators: overall measure comparing countries’ innovation capabilities. indicators for the protection of intellectual property. Creation of patents. Availability of scientists and engineers.
Structured Innovation methodologies
• 3rd most important element after leadership and team

European Space Agency & BioTRIZ• Project: ‘Developing tools for psychological support for the
astronauts in long duration space mission”– Applied BioTRIZ to deal with extreme environments in Space,
considering all possible failure factors and their combinations– Identified 2,273 potential problems that should be prevented in long-
term missions– Only 36 were known before the use of BioTRIZ– For all the problems, solution models were suggested. Astronauts now
have a preliminary answers to consider for problems that they have not yet confronted
– BioTRIZ appeared to be 60 times more efficient than standard methods of problem forecasts that have been used in Space Science

European Space Agency & TRIZ/SI
• Project: ‘Crew Expert Tools to support autonomous operations in complex human spacecraft”– Using TRIZ develop problem-solving tools that guide astronauts in solving
ill-defined problems in the case of technical malfunctions, given that they cannot rely on ground control during missions to Moon and Mars.
• Both the EESA projects (psychology & technical malfunction) required a methodology able to work in conditions of high uncertainty and extreme environmental aggressiveness, within the technologically complex systems involved in space exploration.

Major World Corporations Deploying TRIZ/SI• Samsung: 8,100 engineers trained
– Forbes 2013, due to TRIZ, Samsung saved $100 million in first few projects– In 2003 TRIZ led to 50 new patents for Samsung– In 2004 one project alone saved Samsung $100 million, a DVD pick-up innovation– TRIZ is now an obligatory skill set if one want to advance within Samsung
• Intel: 2,500– Case study showing effective use and impact of TRIZ
• GE: 2,000 – Hundreds of patents generated via TRIZ– Used TRIZ, tofenced all GE patents since the inception of the company in 1876– Led by Global Quality Leader, Marther Gardner
• P&G: 1,500 – CEO(2012) talked the language of TRIZ. Problem – what is the contradiction??– Patents increased 5 times over 10 years (1997 to 2007)
• Hyundai: 500– More than 300 patents with TRIZ
• Siemens: many trained in TRIZ at different levels• POSCO: South Korean Steel Company (Top 5 Steel Co in the world)
TRIZ is popular at BMW, Unilever, Philips, Continental Automotive, FIAT,ABB and other major European corporation

Countries Deploying TRIZ/SI (1)• Columbia
– 2014, Columbian Government goal, make Colombia a hi-tech hub of South America• South Korea taken as a role model• TRIZ, most recommended approach advised by many South Korean corporations
– 2015, Colombian Governmental Innovation Agency & Colombian Government Patent Office funded• USD 800,000 to deploy TRIZ in Columbian Industry• Patent application increased by 15% for the whole nation• 90% of ideas implemented
– 2016 USD 600,000 to promote TRIZ within Government Organizations and SMES
• Argentina– Seeing the success of Columbia launched a similar program in 2016, by
• Argentine Patent Agency & Ministry of Science, technology and Productive innovation of Argentina

Countries Deploying TRIZ/SI (2)• Poland
– Jan 2016, mass training session of 100 participants for MATRIZ Level 1– Mar 2016, TRIZ workshop for Polish Parliament
• Leaders of government innovation and entrepreneurship agencies,• Deans and presidents of Polish Universities and SME Industrial Parks
– 2016• TRIZ deployment at the governmental level is being developed• Number of MATRIZ Level 1 workshops have already been conducted• 5 MATRIZ Level 2 workshops scheduled• 2 MATRIZ Level 3 workshops scheduled
– Activities sponsored and organized by • Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP)
• Iran:– Applies TRIZ to all major Infrastructure projects 34©2016 Jabir Walji, all rights reserved Source: MATRIZ, Sergei Ikovenko, Darrell Mann
TRIZ/SI for Technical & Business Taught at Universities• In engineering schools, MBA, entrepreneurship and Innovation Management program
in US, Europe and Asia– Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering School – MIT (US), – New York University, Stern School of Business – NYU (US)– University of Virginia, Darden School of Business (US)– Tufts University, Innovation Management program (US)– Imperial College, Engineering School (UK)– University of Bath, Engineering School (UK)– University of Warwick, Engineering School (UK)– Technical University of Munich (Germany), – University of Tokyo (Japan)– Politecnico of Milan (Italy)– Bacconi University (Italy)– Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology – KAIST (South Korea)– Hebei University of Technology, engineering School (China), and – Other leading engineering schools as well

TRIZ for SME• SMEs are the backbone of the economy of many countries
– SME generate revenue six time faster than larger businesses– TRIZ tools that focus on cost reduction, walking around competitive patents of multinational
corporations, etc. are extremely effective for SME.– 2015, TRIZ education and deployment boomed in entrepreneurship
• China Between 2013 -2015 – 484 SMEs attended TRIZ training program given by:
• National Engineering Research Centre for Technological Innovation Method And Tools– 2,532 engineers attended TRIZ training program– 1,150 certified engineers in TRIZ– 1,061 patent applied (2 patent per SME)
• UAE SME– Account for 86% of the workforce in the private sector– 60% of GDP Source: Jabir Walji, MATRIZ 36©2016 Jabir Walji, all rights reserved
Conclusion• TRIZ/SI (Structured Innovation Methodology)
– Enhances innovation process for countries, government and organizations
– Overcomes barriers and challenges in the drive for creative change
– Supporting SMEs through TRIZ/SI (structured methodology) needs to be top priority for UAE
