ABSTRACT. Pattern jury instructions are used by trial judges toexplain the law to jurors in language that they can understand andthat provide consistency from one trial to another. This criminal juryinstructions bibliography of 169 entries is a companion to a previousbibliography on civil jury instructions. An index to acronyms forboth criminal and civil jury instructions is also included.

In instructing the jury in the law, a trial judge must phrase the in-structions in language that is both understandable to the jurors andnonprejudicial to the litigants. Pattern jury instructions, also de-scribed as model, uniform, approved, and standardized, are careful-ly drafted tools designed to simplify this judicial duty and to encour-age consistency among judges. Prepared under the sponsorship ofbar associations and the courts, compilations of criminal jury in-structions have been published for almost every state and for thefederal courts.

This bibliography of criminal jury instructions is a compre-hensive list of recent and dated jury instructions and as such buildson the work of others, including:

The Nieland book in particular lists several titles that are not veri-fiable in OCLC. Those titles do appear in the present bibliographywith a note that such titles are taken from Nieland and were not veri-fied..Many of the other titles listed were not available to the authors,but the above bibliographies, other printed acquisitions tools, andOCLC served as authorities.

The entries are arranged first by state and within each state bydate, beginning with the most recent title. References to earlier edi-tions of a title immediately follow the entry for the latest edition.Criminal jury instructions for the federal courts, general juryinstruction titles, and criminal antitrust jury instructions are listednext. An index to acronyms for both criminal and civil jury instruc-tions, keyed to the bibliographies by entry numbers, concludes thisbibliography. Entries have been numbered consecutively from thefirst civil jury instructions bibliography to the present bibliography.Some entries have been repeated to provide one-step use of the bib-liographies.

An entry may include all or some of the following information:

a. standard bibliographic information: author(s), title, edition,compiler(s), editor(s), place of publication, publisher, date ofpublication, collation, and in the case of multivolume sets, thevolume number in which criminal jury instructions appear.
