ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR
Once again we have come to the end of a very successful
year at ASSG Junior School. Thank you to everyone;
teachers, parents, support and ancillary staff who have all
worked hard to provide the best opportunities for our
students to grow and their learning to flourish. The whole-
hearted passion of our School community provides many
opportunities for our students to develop as a whole
person – in mind, body and spirit.
As the year comes to a close, I wish the Year 6 students all
the very best as they move on into the next phase of their
education, Secondary School. We will miss their leadership,
cheerful faces, friendship and the support that they have
given to our younger students throughout the year.
I would like to congratulate all our students and staff for
their contribution to a very successful year. I am very
thankful for and proud of, each and every one of them.
Together we have learned much and shared experiences
that will remain with us in the years to come.

JS Captains’ Speech 2017 – Meg Brassington and Jed Marshall
Good morning Members of the Board, invited guests, Mr Fleming, Mrs Akers, staff, students, ladies and gentlemen. My
name is Meg Brassington and joining me today is Jed Marshall. We have been honoured to be the Junior School Captains
for 2017.
Today we are reminded of the significance and strength of the wider All Souls St Gabriels community. After another busy
year, it is reassuring to know that this community has always been there to celebrate our successes and to support us on
our educational journey.
As we near the end of our time in Junior School, we have been thinking about our School motto ‘Servire Regnare’ – to
serve is to reign. We know that service to others is very important as the Junior School code includes ‘service to others’ as
one of its main goals. We then started thinking about some of the ways that service can be shown and how it is often
linked to friendships or mateship. For example, on ANZAC Day, we march to honour those who have shown service to our
country and loyalty to their mates. Whilst in Canberra, our visit to the Australian War Memorial gave us some understanding of the unbelievable commitment and service shown by Australians during times of war.
Much closer to home, every year after the Burry Work Weekend, we enjoy improvements to our School thanks to the
service, loyalty and commitment of former students and staff. Their willingness to give something back to their school is
an inspiration. It is wonderful to see that the spirit of ‘serving others’ and enjoying time with mates continues long after
finishing school. As Souls students, we try to demonstrate service by willingly helping out wherever we are needed and by
looking for opportunities to help. We show our commitment to our School by giving every task our very best effort.
As Meg and I have attended All Souls St Gabriels since we were very little, I am sure that in the future, we will also come
back to our School for Reunion Weekends. We will recall many of the exciting events and unforgettable times we shared
during our time in the Junior School, such as our success at the sporting carnivals and our amazing trip to Canberra.
This year, the Junior School students have experienced another action packed year with many successes in the
classrooms, in cultural endeavours and on the sporting field. The following events have been especially memorable for
each year level:
Our Pre-Prep class have enjoyed all their learning with Mrs Peagham, Mrs Limkin and Mrs Cragg including building an
Aboriginal shelter called a Mia-Mia, giving magic playdough to the new Year 6 leaders in Chapel and building a scarecrow
to frighten the birds from our garden.
Mrs Riddle’s Prep children have loved designing machines with collage and blocks and learning about authors and their
books, especially ‘Harry the Dirty Dog’ and ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’.
Mrs Marshall’s Muppets, Year 1, have really enjoyed swimming lessons, reading their dinosaur narratives for the students
at assembly, going to the museum to see robotic dinosaurs and learning about sea creatures.
The excursions to Reef HQ and to the Venus Battery were a highlight for Year 2 and Miss Browne. They have also
appreciated reading with their Year 5 buddies and learning about portraits with Miss Whitby. Using the Cubetto and Maze
Mouse in Technology has also been a great challenge.
Mrs Heuir’s Rock Stars, Year 3, have enjoyed creating and dancing to their own rock song, drawing self-portraits, finding
out about the solar system and designing a trap to catch Fantastic Mr Fox!
Year 4 have had a great year with Mrs Turner. Their excursion to Billabong Sanctuary, completing Science experiments in
the Science labs and exploring their creative side in the Visual Arts have all made Year 4 a fantastic year.
Year 5 have kept Mr Roughley very busy this year. They visited Jezzine Barracks and the museum in Townsville and had
an amazing experience learning more about film in a workshop with Jed Cahill. They designed and flew paper planes to
learn about averages in Maths and experimented with Dry Ice in Science!
Some of the highlights for Year 6 have been the excursion to Townsville for our History unit and, of course, our trip to
Canberra.
As Leaders in the Junior School, we have also appreciated the opportunity to run the Chapel Services, lead our teams at
Sporting events and run a successful Under 8s Day for the younger students in our community.
We are looking forward to many exciting adventures and new challenges in Secondary School, including the Year 7 camp
and the opportunities to make new friends. We hope to create great memories like those that bring former students and
staff back to our School annually for the Reunion Weekend.
Of course none of these things would be possible without the support of our families, teachers and the wider School
community so we would like to thank everyone who has contributed to our education and well-being over the past 8
years.
Thank you, and all the best to the Year 6 class of 2018. We hope you enjoy your time as Junior School leaders as much
as we have.
