Dear members of the St. Cyril of Alexandria Community,

The nation has been turned upside down since the atrocious death of George Floyd last week, and the riots that have also

caused more senseless suffering and death; we grapple with the reality of injustice that faces so many Americans every day. Within our St. Cyril parish, many have reached out to us and expressed a variety of opinions, feelings, and emotions.

I want to make it clear that as Roman Catholics we have a responsibility to fight every injustice towards humanity - and this includes the sin of racism.

Our parish mission statement is “Transforming Cultural Catholics Into Intentional Disciples”. As Intentional Disciples, in our multi-cultural parish community, we take to heart the words of St. Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians.

“The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.”

1st Corinthians 10:16-17

As a parish family, ponder the words "...we who are many are one body" Let us pray that as a community we remember that if any part of the Body of Christ is hurting, we are all hurting.

Estimados miembros de la comunidad de San Cirilo de Alejandría,

La nación ha quedado en desventura desde la atroz muerte de George Floyd la semana pasada, al igual que los disturbios que también han causado más sufrimiento y muerte sin sentido; Todos los

días los estadounidenses estamos lidiando y enfrentando a una realidad de injusticia. Dentro de nuestra parroquia de San Cirilo, varias personas nos han contactado y expresado una variedad de opiniones, sentimientos y emociones.

Quiero dejar en claro que, como católicos romanos, tenemos la responsabilidad de luchar contra todas las injusticias hacia la humanidad, y esto incluye el pecado del racismo.

Nuestra misión parroquial es "Transformar católicos culturales en discípulos intencionales". Como Discípulos Intencionales, en nuestra comunidad parroquial multicultural, hemos tomado en serio las palabras de San Pablo en su primera carta a los Corintios.

“La copa de bendición que bendecimos, ¿no es la comunión de la sangre de Cristo? El pan que partimos, ¿no es la comunión del cuerpo de Cristo? Siendo uno solo el pan, nosotros, con ser muchos, somos un cuerpo; pues todos participamos de aquel mismo pan”. 1era. de Corintios 10: 16-17

Como familia parroquial, medite las palabras "... nosotros, que somos muchos, somos un solo cuerpo". Oremos para que, como comunidad, recordemos que si alguna parte del Cuerpo de Cristo está sufriendo, todos estamos lastimados.

and brothers to each other. We ask for your help in calling on your Son, seeking forgiveness for the

times when we have failed to love and respect one another. We ask for your help in obtaining from your Son the grace we need to

overcome the evil of racism and to build a just society. We ask for your help in following your Son, so that prejudice and

animosity will no longer infect our minds or hearts but will be replaced with a love that respects the dignity of each person.

St. Cyril of Alexandria Feast: June 27

The patron saint of St. Cyril of Alexandria parish lived from 376 to 441 A.D. in the city of Alexandria in Egypt.

He became the patriarch of that city in the year 412. He was declared a doctor of the church in the year 1882 by Pope Leo XIII.

St. Cyril is best known for his eloquent defense of the title, "Theotokos" (God-Bearer) for the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Council of Ephesus, held in the Basilica of St. Mary, formally defined that "Theotokos" was an appropriate title for Mary.

In the year 1964, Mr. Gregory Walsh, then a member of the parish, was commissioned by Fr. E.T. Quinters to do a painting of St. Cyril. The painting captures our patron saint in one of his more representative actions. It depicts him expounding reasons why the title, "Theotokos" is a theologically sound one for the Virgin.

In the words of the artist: "He is depicted acting impulsively, for that was his nature. The light of the Holy Spirit descends upon him, and illuminates the Basilica. The patriarch of Alexandria has swirled around and dramatically points heavenward as he implores the assembled bishops to accept the dogma. His notes fall to the floor, and his Gospel Codex perches perilously close to the edge of the altar."

The patron and intercessor of St. Cyril of Alexandria parish gives to the people of this community a rich heritage and a model of vigorous faith.

His great devo on to the Eucharist and to Mary, Mother of God, is an inspira on to the parish named a er him.

This painting hangs in the Narthex of the church, just outside the Sacristy.
