By Ms. GruberScholastic has recently selected one

of our district’s teachers to honor. Addie Albano, a middle school special education teacher, has been chosen by Scholastic publications to serve on their National Advisory Board. Ms. Albano has been chosen to be a part of a board of only 10 other, exemplary educators committed to curriculum development and the inte-gration of technology in the classroom. Ultimately, she will help create curriculum for Scholastic and their website. In addi-tion to this, Addie will be working with the Scholastic staff on product develop-ment and assisting in the improvement of Scholastic’s website. Her work for Scho-lastic will also include the testing of new technology in her classroom, development of lesson plans, and the publication of curriculum-based items to the company’s website. Scholastic has rewarded Ms. Albano by offering her stipend and a gift certificate for the company’s products for her classroom.

This exceptional educator was also selected as a finalist for the Scholastic Online Teacher Mentor contest. Addie was chosen from thousands of applicants nationwide and will join a group of 50 teachers from grades K-8 in this honor. In order to enter this contest, she created a technology project with the help of Mark Carls, Educational Tech Integrator for CA BOCES. This project included a Glogster page which featured student work, a class

photo, a personal writing sample, and a video tour of Ms. Albano’s classroom.

Besides her dedication to her students and her commitment to helping a virtual community of educators, Addie is cur-rently serving on a National RTI panel. Ms. Albano’s continued efforts to engage her students and serve other teachers have made her truly stand out in the field of education.

By Mrs. KobinskiOnce again, Randolph, we thank-

you for another job well done. Between November of 2009 and March of 2010, the community sent 43,000 General Mills box tops to our school. We cut, counted, and bundled the box tops and sent them to General Mills. In April, we received a check for $430.00. The check was presented to Mr. Mottern for the Beautification project.

At this time we have approximately $200.00 towards the October 2010 installment. This school year we collected a total of $998.30 from General Mills. The October 2009 installment went to the Randolph PTA.

We started collecting the General Mills box tops in the 2000-2001 school year. Our school has received a total of $7,370.90!

Again, thank-you Randolph and please continue to send in the General Mills box tops.

School library media specialists, library aides, and guests at-tended the annual Cattaraugus-Allegany School Library System (CASLS) Recognition Dinner and Meeting held on May 19 at The Ho-Sta-Geh on Rock City Hill in Olean.

CASLS Director, Mary Ann Hebert, presented this year’s recognition award for Teacher of the Year to JamieLynn Grif-fith, a 2nd grade teacher from Randolph Elementary School. This honor is given to a teacher from a member school district that realizes the importance of, and actively promotes, the library media center.

JamieLynn was nominated for this honor by Lisa Towne, the Library Media Specialist at Randolph Elementary. Lisa noted that JamieLynn, who usually has 75 or more books signed out at a time for her class, is one of her biggest library users. JamieLynn also encourages her students to utilize the library in an inde-pendent and respon-sible fashion during open times at the library. JamieLynn is in regular com-munication with and consults with Lisa throughout the school year and takes full advantage of the Interlibrary Loan options available.

By Mrs. KobinskiOn Friday, April 2, all of the Sixth

grade classes were treated to an excep-tional tutorial on India. Tim Swauger, who lived in India for 14 years, gave a superb video presentation on India. He told of the size, population, customs, daily life, and housing of the Indian people. Aruna, his wife, who grew up in India, not only helped her husband, but also brought in many pieces of furniture, spices, pictures, and jewelry that were made in India. Re-becca Roy brought in several pieces that she had from India. Rebecca grew up in Sri Lanka. She is the mother of our Sixth grade student, Abigail. Abigail is shown above wearing an Indian dress. All three of the presenters wore typical Indian cloth-ing. The students were shown how to put on a typical Indian dress, how to properly cut open a coconut, and had many samples of the Indian food. The students were treated to coconut, mango, a spicy cracker snack, and a sweet Indian treat. Ask any Sixth grader why the Indian people only eat with their right hand.

Students Win Writing Contest

By Mrs. de la CerdaCongratulations are in order for four seventh graders who earned prestigious

awards in the annual Echoes writing contest. Sabrina Jackson received a Show-cased Author plaque while Millie Thompson earned a plaque for Excellence in Writing. Megan Steward and Cienna Ribblett received Honorable Mention awards.

Each year Merry-go-round Theater, an educational theater group, visits local WNY schools to show young people how much fun creative writing can be. Then, ELA teachers follow this up with more instruction before entering the students’ work in December.

Each spring this drama troupe returns to all the participating schools and presents a delightful performance of songs, poems and commercials based on the students’ entries.

Sabrina’s poem entitled “Music” was part of this show and will be performed in every presentation state-wide this spring! What an honor for such a young writer!

ELA 7 teacher, Mrs. de la Cerda said, “I am so proud of these girls’ accomplish-ments! Their work was chosen from over 4000 entries! It’s astounding to have four winners from one class in one year!”

High School Bowl RecognitionBy Mrs. Klee

On May 19, the mem-bers of the High School Bowl team were honored by Jamestown Community College and the Chautauqua Region Community Foun-dation at the High School Bowl Recognition and Awards Ceremony. Each team awarded an MVP certificate to one player. Winning from Randolph was Bryanna Martonis. High School Bowl is an academic quiz challenge and the event was a way to show appreciation for the hard work each team puts into preparing for competi-tion. A highlight of the eve-ning was the opportunity to meet and hear remarks from Jeopardy!’s Tournament of Champions player, Jason Zollinger.

By Mrs. KleeOn May 25, the College Connections

program of Jamestown Community College celebrated Students-of-the-Year. RCS had two recipients of this award: Amanda Smith, senior, and Carlye Evans, junior. Both students were chosen by their teachers based on certain criteria, such as embracing the added challenge of completing college-level work while still in high school, demonstrating a positive attitude about learning, being resourceful and demonstrating perseverance and integrity in and out of the classroom, and understanding the importance of higher education. Both received a certificate and small gift from the college. Congratulations Amanda and Carlye.

By Mr. Skudlarek

The Randolph Central biology classes recently had an incredible opportunity to participate in a state and federal research project on the invasive species that is destroying Ash trees in the United States at an alarming rate, the emerald ash borer (EAB). Cornell University entomologist Mr. Mark Whitmore and a team of graduate students and scientists including former RCS standout student Kim Dean, are doing extensive testing and experiments with the EAB in the Randolph area. Mr. Whitmore visited Mr. Skudlarek’s biology classes to speak on the EAB and then the students participated in some field

studies with Mr. Whitmore to test for the presence in our area.Mr. Whitmore’s forecast for the ash trees in our state and

the Northeast is not good, he predicts that all Ash trees will be destroyed within five years. The Ash trees

account for 20% of our forests and this will have major ecological and economic impacts. The cost of cleanup,

paying to have trees taken down in yards, damage from dead trees falling on power lines etc., etc., could be in the millions. He also warns landowners not to panic and cut all the white ash as it has little or no value now and cannot be transported out of the area (unless you totally de bark it or properly heat treat it) and by cutting / logging your ash, you will probably do major damage to your other valuable timber species in your wood lot. Mr. Whitmore also spoke about additional invasive species that are currently in the United States that we need to be aware of and control. The Asian Long-horned Beetle is currently in Massachusetts and attacks Maples, which could have a very serious impact on our area. The hemlock-eating woolly adelgid could wipe out our Eastern Hemlocks. The key, according to Mr. Whitmore, is educating and informing the public about these species and doing everything we all can to prevent their spread and preserve our forests.

Learning Snowplow safety the ‘Katy’ way

In light of the recent public hearing on the budget, I wanted to spend some time discussing exactly how special education programs are funded. Unlike regular education, funding comes from a variety of different places that are unique to the special education arena.

As with any Randolph Central School student, the base amount of the program comes from our district pupil amount. For our district, the base amount per pupil for the 07-08 school year (most recent data) is $16,993. So, the first $16,993 to educate a special education student comes directly from the district budget, just like every other student. Many students who receive additional educational support, however, have programs that cost more than this base amount. Therefore, other funding streams come into play to offset the additional costs to the district.

First, additional monies are available through the New York State Education Department High Cost System to Track and Account for Children (STAC) system. These monies are provided to reimburse the districts at a rate of approximately 73% of the money spent on special education services above the base amount. These services are not BOCES aidable services because a district cannot receive BOCES aid for special education services. BOCES aid is only available to defray the cost of regular education services.

Second, additional monies are available through Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) funds. Each year monies are received from the state in the form of IDEA grants. The total of the grant amount is based on the students enrolled in special education programs and is used to offset the cost of additional

personnel for these students; additional programs, materials supplies; and any unique items that a student needs for his or her educational program.

Finally, for Medicaid eligible students, the district bills Medicaid for a portion of funds for specific related services such as Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy. For this reason, all of these services provided to our children must meet the federal guidelines for reimbursement.

As always, I would be delighted to discuss any and all of these financial streams with you. The actual formulas from the New York State Education Department are very complex and left to our business office in regard to minute detail of the exact amount received per student. But I can easily discuss the basics, so do not hesitate to contact me.

Evelyn Sabina, Curator of Education at St. Bonaventure University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts, recently congratulated the Randolph art students pictured Front Row (l-r): Brianna Briggs, Shelby Spengler, Miranda Sipko, Alexis Lecceadone and Back row: Alexandra My-ers, Megan Steward, Destiny Gates. Their artwork was chosen from over 300 entries, from 10 area schools, to be exhibited in the first Middle School Juried Exhibition, held April 27- May 16. An opening of the exhibi-tion and reception took place April 27th in the atrium of the Quick Center.

The three jurors, Courtney Blackmon, Kodi Tidd, and Katie Danahy, were “truly enticed and refreshed by the artwork com-ing from local school children.” They also said, “We were pleasantly surprised to see the artistic talent and skill levels that sur-passed our expectations for middle school art work. The young artists’ work demon-strates the importance of art in our schools.”

By Mrs. BeaverOn Saturday, March 6th, Randolph

Central School’s two Odyssey of the Mind teams competed at Allegany-Limestone Central School. Odyssey of the Mind is a program that encour-ages students to think on their feet, be creative, become good problem-solvers. Both teams worked on a long-term problem since October, and wrote a skit, designed and built a set, and made their own costumes. Team members had to do all of the work themselves for the compe-tition. Also, they faced an unknown prob-lem during the Spontaneous competition, where they are judged as a team working together.

The Division I team included Kel-ley Andrews, Adrianna Schosek, Claire Roosa, Ethan Shields, Brett Moore, Wyatt Sluga, and Sarah Stahley. The team was coached by Stephanie Roosa and Amy Lent. This team solved the problem Food Court, where a food was accused of being unhealthy and had to defend itself in court. They also had to make their skit humer-ous. They chose to accuse pizza of being unhealthy, but she defended herself in court and was ruled to be a healthy food after all.

The Division II team included Marcus

Miller, John Brown, Hannah Burch, Karly Studley, Holly Graham, and Brianna Ash-

down. The team was coached by Katherine Beaver and Cammie Burch. The middle school team solved the prob-lem Discovered Treasures, where they had to recreate the discovery of a historical treasure and create a future discovery of a modern treasure. The team chose to recreate the discovery of the Bactrian Gold in Afghani-

stan, and to have a future discovery team find the World War II Monument. The

future became a place of chrome and duct tape, and the team made authentic Eastern costumes for the Afghanistan setting.

The Division II team placed 2nd in their divi-sion, and the Division I team performed very well for their first year. Great job to both Odyssey of the Mind teams this year!

Champions Again! BOYS’ TRAck & FIELd

The Randolph Cardinals track team has proven to be a dynasty. For the third consecutive year the Randolph Boys track team captured a division championship with a league record of six wins and no losses. This marks the 16th time in the last 20 years that the Cards have captured a division crown. A young team with only three seniors defeated previously unbeaten Portville at the last regular meet of the season to claim the Eastern Division title. The Cards also claimed a small school championship at the Falconer Invitational and a third place finish at the Gator Relays.

The Cardinal track team also had several members qualify for the Super 8 Meet at Salamanca. This meet features the top eight athletes in each event for Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Allegany

Counties. Mason Burch took first in the long jump, Anthony Schwartz placed second in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Ben Fluent took second in the discus and placing third were Travis Nagle in the high jump and Dane Dechow in the 110 meter high hurdles. The 1600 meter relay team of Anthony Schwartz, Brandon Boyer, Travis Nagle and Mason Burch placed first. Also qualifying for this meet was the 400 meter relay team of Burch, Schwartz, Anthony Pastorchik and Boyer, as well as Burch and Boyer in the 100 meter dash and Zach Jackson in the 1600 meter run.

Several Randolph athletes will be at or near the top of their seeds for the upcoming sectional meet at Hamburg with the winners advancing to the State Meet. Great season boys, and keep up the great work.

By Mr. Steward

Fluent Smashes RecordThe longest standing track and field record in RCS history fell when Randolph junior Ben Fluent un-

leashed his mighty toss at the Falconer Invitational on Friday, May 5, 2010. Ben threw the discus 151’ 5” which broke the previous record of 144’ 10” which was set by former NFL great Marv Hubbard in 1962. This throw will most likely make Ben the number one seed in the upcoming section six meet. Good luck at sectionals Ben!

Dechow led the hurdlers. Michelle Nagle and Rhiannon Carnahan took charge for the distance runners this season. Brenna McDonald leaped to new heights in the pole vault while Lizzie Brown and Santana France continued to make strides on the runway of long and triple jump.

Strong rookies rounded out the team. Megan Steward led the 1500m, Kassandra Erdman in the throwing events, and McK-enna Maycock set a new high jump record while chasing the 400m one. It was a very impressive year for the girls’ track team.

The lady cardinal softball team is having another great season. They finished with a league record of 8-3. They enter the play-offs as the fourth seed and hope to make it back to the sectional finals.

By Mrs. BeaverMrs. Beaver’s 5th grade class

just completed the annual Pennies for Paws campaign. This year, we ran the penny drive for two weeks, March 15-26. The money is for the animals in the Humane Society. The students organized the penny drive by splitting up into teams, writing and presenting announcements on the morning news, delivering and picking up penny jars from all the classrooms, and counting all of the pennies BY HAND! This year’s results are: Mrs. Johnson’s Pre-K in third place with $63.24, Mrs. Giere’s 2nd grade in second place with $64.22, and Mrs. Sadowski’s PreK in first place with $65.38. Overall, the grade level that raised the most money was PreK! The classes that raised over $60 each, places 1-4, will each receive a popcorn party. In total, we raised $817.46. Thank you to all of the families who sent in donations this year. Mrs. Katherine Beaver’s 5th grade homeroom, and China the pug from the Humane Society.
