June 4, 2012 Dear Members, The weather has been wonderful but today as we prepare the June Newsletter it is raining and the temperature has dropped 25 degrees. The weatherman has indicated that there may be snow in the higher elevations, by this evening! Well we did plant the flowers and the rain will help them. THE ICMJ SUMMIT HELD IN PLACERVILLE OVER MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND WENT VERY WELL. For some of us instead of a 2-day event we were involved for 4 to 5 days. Don has written about this in his letter with pictures as well as great articles in the ICMJ. I want to acknowledge our great Goldhound Team of Volunteers and Nuggets. We could never begin to do what we do if not for all of you. From the bottom of our hearts you are all appreciated and are the BEST MEMBERS EVER! THANK YOU RAY DODDS AND GOLDHOUND NUGGETS! This year we were in a different area gold panning than last year and not as visible to the public as we would like. We were not able to teach that many people to pan but it did give some of us time to visit with each other for a change. The weather was warm so J.P. Korn offered his big tent and between everyone helping it was put up to protect us against the heat of the day! It seems the last couple of months all I have done is thank our Nuggets! Ray considers anyone that helps out at any event a real NUGGET! So that means all of you! Thank you! OUTINGS SCHEDULE – Don has added and changed some dates to the “Outing” schedule. Check this out often as weather could still be a factor. THE 16 TO 1 MINE UNDERGROUND GOLD MINERS MUSEUM PRESENTS TELLURIDES: A RARE MINERAL COLLECTION ON JUNE 23 RD AND 24 TH . Along with the Tellurides collection will be historical walking tours of Alleghany, Daily 11:00am & 2:00pm. - $10 per person. Also two permanent displays! “Mamie Swan’s Photo Album” and “Alleghany 1931-1954.” And a Raffle of a 16 to 1 Gold Quartz Specimen will be held from 10:00am to 5:00pm. We received a letter from Rae Bell, coordinator of the event that they need volunteers to help at the gift shop or sell- ing raffle tickets, so let them know if you can help. Call Rae at 530-287-3223, shifts can be as long or as short as desired. Email: [email protected]. Our outing schedule now reflects the Fathers Day weekend June 16th and 17th. Saturday June 16th will be Pennyweight Bar and further on up the North Fork of the American. Sunday June 17th will be a level 8 hike to Shirttail Creek from our property. Don will send an e-mail out on this shortly covering this week- end event. Our outing also reflects the August 16-19 outing. This will be overnight camping at Robinson’s Flat above Foresthill. Don will also cover that in detail later. RAFFFLE TICKETS: It is that time of the year! We hold our Annual Fundraiser Raffle on Labor Day weekend each year during our Panning Championships. We will be sending out 10 tickets for $2.00 each around 7/10/12. On that address label will be the next due date of your membership in the upper right corner. Our Raffle will be held Sunday, 5:00pm on 9/2/2012. This is our club’s important drawing as it helps pay for our insurance, Bear River Campground Fees, rental of Hall, and expenses. Thank you ev- eryone. Annie

French Hill and Hoboken CreekApril 30, 2012

I think this hike was rated as a level 9 and it came close to that! Six of us went on this trip and it was an interesting challenge. We started the exploration by driving down the Sliger Mine Road, at Greenwood, which is past the town of Cool. We parked at the end of the road and took a trail going around the mountain there. We passed the old Sliger Mine building site and then cut up the mountain on an old roadway of sorts. Our objective was to get up on the mountain where the French Hill Mine hydraulic cut went over the side and down into Hoboken Creek. We got there after hiking just about an hour. This placed us about 700 feet elevation above Hoboken.Standing on the trail looking down I spotted a reflection of water down about 80 feet elevation or so, and we dropped down at that point. It was very steep and loaded with poison oak. Ron Earl had some loppers and he cut our way down. Right off we found an old tunnel filled with water and below that the remnants of an old stamp mill! From there we worked our way down to Hoboken Creek and panned downstream for quite a ways. The gold was hit and miss. We did find some decent gold where we first dropped into Hoboken. Finally we came to a waterfall that looked pretty tough in getting around and we found a trail just above there that worked it’s way back around the mountain and intersected our original trail coming in.This ended our exploration effort. Quite a trip and one that we just might make again, with a few varia-tions! Don

French Hill and Hoboken Creek

These were the old reminants of stamps from the old mill. Every-thing had been removed from the site a long time ago. These stamps were left because they were worn out and of no value to anyone at the time. This old mill site location was quite a find for us. We’ll likely go back some time.

Don’s gold from the ravine. Small but very rough.

ICMJ Two Day SummitSaturday and Sunday May 12 and May 13th

Placerville

This event was actually much more than two days. Saturday and Sunday was at the Eldorado County Fairgrounds with booths and vendors, and the Goldhound Nuggets teaching gold panning. The April issue of the ICMJ magazine covered this event thoroughly. You should check out the pictures and articles in the magazine. Over 3000 people attended this event. This Summit was preceded by an all day hands-on field training on Friday May 11th at Brian Bar-tholomew’s Gleeson property in Iowa Hill. Then Brian held the same event the following Monday May 14th for a different group of prospectors. I understand he had almost 300 people attending the two days. Way to go Brian! Also, after the Summit I did two days of “Introduction to Underground Mining” here at our own property. Attendance was limited to 40 people on Monday and 25 on Tuesday. That went really well too. I had lots of help from my underground mining team. All of this activity was sponsored and coordinated by the ICMJ. This was the second year for this Summit and it was much larger than last year. It looks like this is going to become an annual event. The setup at Placerville was done on Friday and a team of Goldhounds assisted the ICMJ and it’s vendors in whatever way they needed. Thanks guys. Really well done. This newsletter doesn’t have any pictures from Gleeson on their two day event. I’ll have some for the next newsletter. I’ll let the pictures give you a better view of what went on. Thanks. Don

The Goldhound Nuggets panning setup at the Summit. We had lots of Hounds there helping out for the entire two days. The Nuggets taught about 150 people how to pan for gold. That’s super!
