FAITHFUL ADMIRAL’S REPORT
Faithful Admiral SK Robert Font PFN
We are all God’s children: When the Spanish Conquistadores arrived at the islands of the Caribbean, they found a few native tribes inhabiting the land. One of these were the “Tainos.” It didn’t take long for the natives to be entirely exterminated by the Europeans. One Taino “cacique” (chieftain) was “Hatuey.” Hatuey fled Hispaniola for Cuba in 1511 and tried to warn the local natives of the cruelty of the Spaniards in their quest for gold. Diego Veláz-quez and his officers, including Hernán Cortez (who later conquered Mexico), fought the relatively few Taino warriors bravely led by Hatuey. When finally captured, Hatuey was sentenced in 1512 and tied to a stake to be burned alive. Father Bartolomé de las Casas asked Hatuey to convert to Christianity before the sentence was to be carried out, so that his soul would find its way into heaven. It is said that Hatuey asked the priest if the Spaniards went to heaven. When Father de las Casas answered positively, refusing the offer Hatuey exclaimed that he would not want to go anywhere where the Spaniards could be found and that he would gladly go in the oppo-site direction. As Christians, Catholics and Knights of Columbus of the 4th degree, we are called upon to lead through example. By being upright, loving, merciful and unprejudiced we reveal the God that we follow and revere. It is through honor and kindness that we become am-bassadors of our Lord Jesus and set a model for others to aspire to and emulate.

MOTHER TERESA ASSEMBLY # 2506 (GARLAND, TEXAS)
In February, I started reading the book by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (Later Pope Bene-dict the 16th) titled “The Spirit of the Liturgy”. [ Ignatius Press 2000 ]. I spoke of the portion that covers how art is part of the liturgy. The next section discussed music.
Just as art is important to our liturgy, music is also at the core of our culture. Think of the fact that music was a significant portion of the Jewish culture. Certainly the earliest Christians, having come from Jewish roots, would consider this to be important as well. How many of our musical elements are from the Psalms? I couldn’t begin to enumer-ate all the hymns that have an Old Testament basis. Yet there is also much new that has arisen from the salvation history of Our Lord Jesus.

Once again, just as I reminded you last month:
Please remember to also change your address with the Knights of Columbus whenever you change addresses.
Half of the Fraternal year has passed and very soon the Assembly will be looking to fill a new slate of Officers for the 2018-2019 Fraternal Year.
Your Councils will also be doing the same. So, take a little time and consider if you have something to offer by volunteering to serve. Your Councils and, of course, your Assembly can only work if Knights are willing to step-up and give of their time and talents.

MOTHER TERESA ASSEMBLY # 2506 (GARLAND, TEXAS)
ELECTION PROCEDURES by FN SK Rick Bentine
Sir Knights,
Brothers here are the BY-LAWS Election Procedures we will be following for the election of officers this year
Pursuant to Article VII, Section 21, of the Laws and Rules of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus, the following By-Laws are adopted by the MOTHER TERESA ASSEMBLY NO. 2506, Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus.
ARTICLE II - Elections
Section 1. All officers shall be elected at the first regular meeting in May of each year. The officers shall hold office for a term of one year, beginning July 1, and until their successors are elected and qualified. Trustees shall be elected for a three-year staggered term, as provided in Article VIII, Section 24(i) of the Laws and Rules of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.
Section 2. The election of officers shall be by ballot. A majority of all the votes cast shall be necessary to elect. When only one candidate is proposed for an office and no further nominations have been made from the floor, the presiding Faithful Navigator shall declare the individual elected by acclamation. Voting by proxy or absentee ballot is prohibited.
Section 3. The Faithful Navigator shall appoint two members who shall not be candidates in the election to act as Tellers. After all who are entitled to do so have voted, the ballot shall be declared closed and the Tellers shall then proceed to count the votes. One of the Tellers shall examine each ballot singly and pass the same to his associate, who shall read aloud the name or names written or printed on all legal ballots. The Scribe shall tally the same and the result thereof shall be announced by the presiding officer.
Section 4. Each officer elected must qualify and fill the office to which he is chosen, with or without installation, at the first regular meeting in the month of July succeeding his election, unless excused by a vote of the Assembly, and must present himself for installation at the time specified in the notice issued by or through the District Master, unless excused by such officer. Otherwise such office shall be considered vacant.
Section 5. Vacancies in elective offices shall be filled, after notice to the members, by election at the regular business meeting next succeed-ing the regular meeting at which the vacancy was created.

For the Fraternal year coming up in 2018 - 2019, I would like to know if there is any interest from our better halves to form a 4th Degree Lady’s Auxiliary Club. In our assembly, we have heard from SK Larry J. Weygandt, USCG (Ret) of the many great works done by his wife, Lady Diane Weygandt, specifically with regards to her involvement with Soldiers Angles and her Military Chaplain Support Ministry. If there is any Sir Knight or Lady who wishes to look into the chance of participating in these types of works or even hosting an Auxiliary Club, please contact the Sir Knight Adrian Rodriguez for more details at [email protected] The attached letter* is one of many she has received, including Combat Flags, unit Mission Flags, pictures, and cards expressing gratitude of not being forgotten while defending our freedom serving in harms way. *NOTE: SK Larry W. has given permission to use this letter for reproduction in this Newsletter.

Benjamin Banneker (1731—1806) Benjamin Banneker was born on November 9, 1731, in Ellicott's Mills, Maryland. He was the son of an ex-slave named Robert and his wife, Mary Banneky. Because both of his parents were free, Ben-jamin escaped the wrath of slavery as well. He was taught to read by his maternal grandmother and for a very short time attended a small Quaker school. Banneker was primarily self-educated, a fact that did little to diminish his brilliance. His early accomplishments included constructing an irrigation system for the family farm and a wooden clock that was reputed to keep accurate time and ran for more than 50 years until his death. In addition, at age 57, Banneker taught himself as-tronomy by borrowing books and a telescope from a neighbor. Using his self-taught knowledge, he accurately forecasted lunar and solar eclipses. After his father's passing, he ran his own farm for years, cultivating a business selling tobacco from his crops. In his later years he was the author and publisher of an Almanac for the area of New England he lived in. Benjamin Banneker's accomplishments extended into other realms as well, including civil rights. In 1791, Thomas Jefferson was secretary of state and Banneker considered the respected Virginian, though a slaveholder, to also be open to viewing African Americans as more than slaves. Thus, he wrote Jefferson a letter hoping that he would “readily embrace every opportunity to eradicate that train of absurd and false ideas and opinions which so generally prevail with respect to us." To further support his point, Banneker included a handwritten manuscript of an almanac for 1792, containing his astronomical calculations. Jefferson quickly acknowledged Banneker's letter, writing a response. He told Banneker that he took “the liberty of sending your almanac to Monsieur de Condorcet [secretary of the French Academy of Sciences]...because I considered it as a document to which your whole colour had a right for their justification against the doubts which have been entertained of them.”
PATRIOT OF THE MONTH By: SK Bob Fries
“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. ” — Romans 12:10
SCRIPTURE VERSE OF THE MONTH
As many of you know, we as fellow Knights of Columbus work hard, play hard, and pray even harder. This month, we ask that you keep many of our brother Sir Knights and Ladies of the 4th Degree whom have taken ill or moved on to be with our Lord in your prayers. If you have the chance, take a moment to call them, visit them, or send them a kind re-minder that we are here for them. It is not only the officers who should reach out, but all of us. Three such individuals that come to mind whom I ask each and every one of you to pray for include individuals such as:
SK Bill Fetzer SK Father Bob Shortall Lady Frankie Williams If you know of a Sir Knight or Lady who could use our prayers, please let the Faithful Captain, Adrian Rodriguez, know ASAP!

REMINDER: We in the 4th Degree participate in the “Chalice Fund.” When a Sir Knight passes, a chalice or ciborium is engraved with the Sir Knight’s name and presented to a church, priest or mission designated in advance by the Sir Knight and his family. In this way, every time the chalice or ciborium is used in a mass, the Sir Knight is remembered.
In like manner to the visual arts, the musical arts must be overseen to make sure that music is appropriate to the culture of the liturgy. Maybe you can imagine how our services would be if pop tunes were our musical selections. Obviously some of our non-Catholic Christian sects do exactly this, and services often seem to be more entertainment than worship of God. So, that is pretty much what regulates the music in our liturgy. What is appropriate to praise God and bring Glory to His Name.
I have found this book to be very helpful in my understanding of the liturgy and how it came to be in its current form, and how it effects our lives. You may want to consider reading it to help you as well
