REACHING IN, REACHING OUT, REACHING GOD

Fr. Jim’s Jottings Well, we’re two weeks into having public Masses. Last weekend at 4 pm Mass, we had 112 people come compared to 60 the week before. There were 116 people at our 10:00am Mass compared to 112 the week before. So, our numbers are growing. I want to assure everyone that we are being very careful in observing the guidelines for safety with Covid-19. And those that have come have been very helpful in having their temperature taken and in wearing facemasks. I am impressed at how observant everyone is in keeping social distance when seating themselves. I don’t think there is much more we can do to alleviate fears that some people have. I do hope that our numbers will continue to grow. If we meet the quota of 25% occupancy, we can invite people to come into the Great Hall and watch Mass through the large screen TV. Everyone would be offered Holy Communion. As we move forward with our public Masses, I’m suggesting that we add our Sunday 8:00am Mass as of the weekend of July 12th. It might help us spread out our attendance. For the time being we will not resume Sunday night Mass. Hopefully we can do that sooner rather than later. And, finally, after this weekend we will no longer offer Holy Communion at 11:00am each Sunday. We’ve been doing this even before we had public Masses. I’m hoping that those who come to Holy Communion could begin joining us for one of our Masses.

IPRF is Changing! St Joe’s and St Mary’s have had a long history of sharing our religious education program. It goes all the way back to 1984 when Fr Roger Zach, OFM Cap and Fr

Robert Schiavone were the Pastors. Both parishes agreed to merge the two parish programs into one. It brought our two parishes together and we could provide a first class program with fewer staff. After 36 years, our IPRF program will be changing. St Mary’s has decided to establish their own religious education program this year. As a result, St Joe’s will be doing their own program. Ours will continue to be offered on Wednesdays. It will now be called “St Joseph Religious Ed Program”. Even though September is a ways off, we do encourage St Joe’s parishioners to register their children. Registration will begin this Monday, June 29th. Of course, adjustments will have to be made to adapt to fewer students. But with everyone’s help and cooperation, we’ll be working through the summer to make sure the transition goes smoothly. Thank you!

Bishop’s Annual Appeal Thank you to those who have responded to this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal. So far 433 parishioners have committed $75,824 towards our parish goal of $77,175. We are slowly but surely crawling to our goal. If you’ve not given to the campaign yet, we can use your gift to get to the target. Thanks.

Non Raffle Raffle Thank you to those who have already returned their “Non-Raffle Raffle” donation. It continues to

be impressive to see the quick and generous response from so many. If you can, we are asking parishioners to return the raffle envelope with a donation of $35 or more. This raffle is very helpful in getting us through the summer months and especially as our contributions have slipped with the coronavirus. Note: If you have already contributed, it will not be deposited until after July 1 for our new fiscal year. Again, thanks!

Can the Parish Help? These are very difficult days for some families in trying to make ends meet. Some have lost their job or have had their hours cut back. If St Joe’s can help in some way, please call the Parish Office and let us talk with you.

Everyday Stewardship - Recognize God In Your Ordinary Moments

God Is Love I was recently at a Catholic conference and had a conversation with someone living in the thick of Hollywood culture. He was Catholic and spoke of how hard it was to live out his faith amid tremendous temptation and negativity toward religion. He spoke about how going to daily Mass helped to keep him centered and stay strong in his faith. He was a great witness to living out one’s faith in the face of disbelief.

One thing that he told me stood out above all the rest. He spoke of his engagement to his fiancé and how important it was to him that God was a major part of their relationship and their lives as individuals as well. He told me he said something to her like, “If you don’t love Jesus more than you love me, this is never going to work.” What an amazing and truly moving witness!

Songs and books are written about the intense longing one human being can have for another. We can describe another as meaning everything to us. We speak of wanting to offer our complete selves to our beloved. However, true love is about more than wanting to be with that person. It is about wanting that person to know a love even greater than theirs: the love of God. No love can last without God. My Hollywood friend knew this to be the case. He showed his true love for his wife-to-be by sharing more than himself — he shared the very One who created love. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi

Church Chuckle A church’s summer carnival included a dunking tank, where softball throwers with good aim

could make a big splash with the pastor. The tank proved a popular attraction, but things really took off when the pastor put a sign above himself that read, “Goliath.”

Prayer Shawl Ministry We will begin to meet in person again in a safe way as long as we are able to. We will start meeting in August on the 1st Tuesday (Aug. 4) and also on the 3rd Tuesday (Aug. 18).
