A Chilliwack man is facing a charge of pos-session of child por-nography.

The Serious Crime Unit of the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment has laid the charge against 43-year-old John Patrick Davy.

Under section 517 of the criminal code, a publication ban has also been put into place, prohibiting the publishing of more details.

“Our first and fore-most responsibility in an investigation of this nature is the safety and

security of our com-munity’s youth,” said Cpl. Len vanNieuwen-huizen. “Our investiga-tion to date has found that no local youth’s safety has been com-promised. Our investi-

gation into this matter is ongoing. It is incum-bent on us to complete a thorough and exten-sive investigation to ensure the well being and protection of all young people.”

There is no deny-ing that the phy-sique of golfers

has changed dramati-cally over the last sev-eral years. A healthy lifestyle, along with a golf-specific fitness regi-men, leads to a more enjoy-able life and a bet-ter golf game. At the professional level, top golfers dedicate a part of their golf training to physical fitness. Many of those players have utilized a systematic approach to the golf swing designed and created by Dr. Greg Rose and Dave Phillips. The system is called Titleist Performance Institute (TPI).

TPI is a program that can benefit golf-ers of all abilities. Whether you are a weekend warrior, try-ing to be more compet-itive with your co-work-ers or aspiring to tour, you will benefit from training your body for the sport of golf

Traditionally, to improve your golf game, you may work with golf professional and seek golf lessons. Research at TPI has shown that the “tra-ditional” golf swing that golf professionals teach to all of their clients does not work for everyone. In many cases the “traditional” golf swing is impos-sible to replicate for someone with a past injury or physical limi-tation.

Let’s use Jim Furyk’s unconventional golf swing for example. If you observe Furyk’s golf swing his hips

“underturn” during the backswing and “over-turn” coming through the downswing. If you look at his posture and his ability to post his hips through the follow through; his swing and his body mechanics are nearly identical to that of the much sought after Tiger Woods golf swing. Through close observation, you will notice the elbow tuck on Furyk’s swing allows him to square the club at impact. This is a modification that was either given to him to compensate for his “underturning” hips in the backswing or was an adaptation he developed over

years of practice. Odds are if Jim Furyk was instructed to swing like Tiger Woods he would not be the professional golfer he now is.

As a golfer, you may feel frustrated with your golf game, and would feel even more frustrated if your golf pro tried to teach you something that you could not physically do. Think of spending hours upon hours on the range practicing something that is very well never attainable with someone telling you to keep doing it over and over again to no avail. I believe that this would be a waste of your time

and money. In order to truly improve your golf swing, you must remove physical limita-tions and work with a golf coach to perfect your technique.

Over the next four weeks I will be show-ing you how you can use golf fitness to improve your golf game. Next week I will focus on the best way to warm up the body to maximize your time on the green.

Gordon Penner is a

Kinesiologist at Ascend Fitness

Inc. and has been golfing in the

Fraser Valley for the past 12

years. As a certified TPI Fitness

Professional, Gordon helps golf-

ers in Chilliwack improve their

game and golf injury free.

The Chilliwack Connect event is rising from the ashes — already.

When it looked like several members of the organizing com-mittee would not be returning for the fourth year, it went down in flames. The decision was made to cancel the 2013 event that caters to Chilliwack’s needy.

Last year they served more than 850 lunches at the First Avenue Christian Assembly.

But now it’s been announced that Chilliwack Connect will be resurrected this year.

“The community felt Chilliwack Connect needed to continue,” said Coun. Stewart McLean, who is stepping into the role of coordinator of the planning team. “We couldn’t just let it fall by the wayside.”

The 4th Annual Chilliwack Connect will go ahead on October 5 at the First Avenue Christian Assembly.

How it works is that everyone from the homeless, to the work-ing poor who show up that day are fed, clothed, and given much needed supplies by an army of Chilliwack Connect volunteers. There are meals, referrals to local services, haircuts and day-

care provided.“Once I had met and spoken

to people from different organi-zations around Chilliwack, we formed a planning team with some of the previous members, and some new ones, and have been moving ahead on it.” said McLean.

One of the big tasks to get squared away was the food.

Students from Chilliwack sec-ondary’s culinary arts program, led by program head Terry McDougall, will be catering the meals.

“It’s going to be an incredible hot lunch,” McLean said.

has changed dramati-cally over the last sev-eral years.
