The Rehabilitation Department staff of Campbell River Hospital joined together as Team Blair to raise $5,000 for ALS.

Blair’sTeam did the annual Kusam Klimb on Saturday, completing the 23 km backcountry endurance event up Mount H’Kusam in Sayward.

The husband of one of the department staff, Blair, has ALS and his wife has recently gone off work to take care of him. Funds will go to the ALS

Society of BC (ALSBC) to support Camp Alohi Lani, a camp for children with a parent with ALS. ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) is a progressive, terminal

neuromuscular disease in which nerve cells die and leave voluntary muscles paralyzed. Every day, two to three Canadians die of the disease. Help Team

Blair by donating through the ALSBC website under Events/Team Blair or at the Rehab Department, Campbell River Hospital. Tax receipts will be given.

Worldwide there are an estimated 33.6 million people living with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and related dementia – 500,000 of those being Canadian, and six million new cases diagnosed per year.

In a Globe and Mail article dated July 20, 2011 seven health risks were outlined that may contribute to Alzheimer risk.

Dr. Barnes, in her research, used mathematical modeling to estimate the global impact of modifi able risk factors with 17.2 million of these current cases being preventable. Here is her research summarized:

● Low education: associated with 19.1 per cent or 6.4 million cases (use it or lose it. The more educated a person the more likely they are to engage in stimulating brain activity).

● Smoking: 13.9

per cent or 4.6 million cases (smoking weakens blood vessels and affects blood fl ow to the brain).

● Physical inactivity: 12.7 per cent or 4.3 million (exercise is one of the top things that will slow and delay AD and dementia).

● Depression: 10.6 per cent or 3.6 million cases (those with serious depression have double the risk of developing dementia).

● High, poorly and controlled blood pressure: 5.1 per cent or 1.7 million.

● Diabetes Type 2: 2.4 per cent or 800,000 cases.

● Obesity: two per cent or 670, 000 cases.

I recently gave a lecture to the retired RN’s (registered nurse) group in town on the subject of improving

memory and brain function. During my research I wrote a new newsletter – my fi rst since getting my prescribing rights in August of 2010. In the process I researched the work of Dr. Amen and Shankle

in their book Preventing Alzheimer’s. The main theme of their treatment protocol is to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s long enough so that living a natural life

span without dementia is possible.

AD is thought to result from an accumulation of beta amyloid in the brain tissue but once a person develops symptoms of dementia they have had beta amyloid accumulation for 30 years! Wouldn’t it be better to practice prevention!

There is a genetic

test, APOE 4 ellele, associated with a tenfold increase risk and knowing now that we can change the expression of genes with nutrition, it is even more important to consider nutritive prevention for dementia.

My top four remedies to add to your health maintenance program if you are not on them already include:

● Exercise 20-30 minutes per day, preferably weight training according to Dr. Amen. Make sure you protect yourself against head injury in your chosen sport as head injury also increases the risk of AD.

● Curcumin: in a well absorbed formula this nutrient crosses the blood brain barrier and has been shown in some studies to reduce amyloid plaque.

● Vitamin E: the mixed tocopherol form

of vitamin E contains gamma tocopherols to prevent oxidative damage caused by amyloid plaque.

● Gingko: this herb is really an anti-aging tonic helping not only with brain function and circulation but antioxidant properties that help with many body systems including eye and neurological health. Check out the gingko tree that survived Hiroshima showing that this is one fantastic radioprotective herb!

● Essential fatty acids (EFA’s) containing high dose EPA DHA: of course you are taking every day anyway! EFA’s limit beta amyloid production and increase neurotrophic factor that promotes the survival of neuronal cells.

If you are someone who is already exhibiting some brain function symptoms that are concerning you it is highly recommended that you see a professional versed in Functional Medicine so you can delay the onset of dementia.

A group of anglers from Campbell River and Courtenay camped out for 9 days and had the opportunity to fi sh Fry Lake north of Campbell River. Trout caught ranged from 14 to 18 inches. The action picked up when Norman Beech and Vickie Atherton were fi shing. Vikki was trolling with a black woolly worm fl y. The fl y made a ripple on the surface of the water and was scooped up by a resident eagle. The line snapped and the eagle was gone. Local lakes have been good for both Cutthroat and Rainbow trout fi shing using any combination of spinners and spoons as well as bait when and where permitted. The Elk River levels are medium to high at the moment and are expected to drop in weeks to come. This river is restricted to fl y fi shing and is tough fi shing for the beginner. When the fi shing guides from Campbell River head south as they were doing last week, their destinations were Kitty Coleman and Bates Beach. Shelter Point is still producing salmon anywhere from 14 to 24 pounds. Anglers on the West Coast have been battling strong winds and sometimes getting out, the fi shing has been tough going. Fifteen year old Jalen Hulit of Coutts, Alberta landed a 31.7 pounder and also took a 27.7 pounder the same day. Halibut fi shing at Nootka Sound has been very good; James Tant caught a 59.5 pound halibut. Canada Day is a family affair for fi shing on Discovery Pier in Campbell River. The Huck Finn Small Fry Derby will take place from 9a.m. until noon. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest, smallest, prettiest, ugliest, fattest and oddest catches.

COURTENAY — Two Comox Valley-raised female university students will receive a hand-up to fi nish their studies.

Mikaela Jorgensen and Rose Prieto each received $1,000 bursaries from the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) – Comox Valley.

Pat James, previous CFUW bursary committee chair, noted students must be graduates of a Comox Valley secondary school and they must be in at least their second, third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree.

“This is really to help younger women complete their education and go on and get a proper university degree,” James said at the CFUW bursary lunch last week, adding there’s more bursaries for fi rst-year students available, and CFUW wanted to ensure students further along in their studies have a chance for fi nancial help to fi nish.

She also noted bursaries are needs-based rather than solely academic, and CFUW chooses to give bursaries so the money goes to young women

who could really use it.“This is why we

established this because we wanted to help somebody in need,” she said. “We like to give the money to someone who can make use of the money.”

Vanier graduate Jorgensen said the money will certainly come in handy for her. The University of Victoria student is just starting her fourth year in the nursing program. She’s doing her practicum, which is unpaid and takes up the majority of her time, while she also works a part-time job in Victoria.

Between school and work, she is busy seven

days per week, but she still relies heavily on student loans — and the amount she receives each semester has diminished recently.

“Right now, I had basically $2,000 of unmet need that I wasn’t able to come up with so this bursary has helped me pretty much pay for my tuition next semester,” explained Jorgensen. “I was really, really happy; it’s a really big deal for me to have that.”

Jorgensen will graduate as a registered nurse with a specialty in emergency room nursing next spring, and plans to work in one of the Victoria hospitals for a year

after that to get some experience. She then plans to work in Hawaii for six months, and at some point she plans to travel back to Nepal and volunteer again.

“In my fi rst year (of schooling), I went and did one of my clinical experiences in Nepal at a teaching hospital, so I plan on going back there to do some volunteer work as well,” said Jorgensen. “There’s so many things I can do once I graduate. I’ve got a bit of a timeline of things I want to get done.”

Highland graduate Rose Prieto couldn’t attend the bursary lunch because she was out tree planting to

pay for her education. She’s just about to enter her third year at UVIC, where she is working towards a double major degree in Spanish and environmental studies.

Prieto is of Mexican and Canadian heritage and plans to become a teacher, using her cultural background and language skills

to work as a liaison between Canada and South America to improve communities’ environmental practices.

Niether of Prieto’s parents have a college education and “by Canadian standards are impoverished,” according to Prieto. The young woman has spent the past three summers tree planting and held a part-time job in Victoria during the school year in an effort to fi nish her studies without incurring major fi nancial debt.

She has volunteered abroad with Canada World Youth for

six months in an orphanage and a hospital, (in Mexico and Honduras), and at another Mexican orphanage for four months.

The Comox Valley Canadian Federation of University Women Club (CV CFUW) was formed in June 1983. It gives out these two University Bursaries once per year, and it offers a $500 entrance bursary to a mature female student in the Comox Valley, who is attending North Island College for university studies.

Not sleeping... because

“My daughter and myself both recently purchased Ironman beds. Penny, who suffers from insomnia, claims that she doesn’t wake up in the night so much, and in general, falls asleep faster and stays asleep. I have Sciatica which causes a lot of hip pain, especially at night. Recently I had to leave my bed and sleep in the spare room bed, which caused a lot of pain. As soon as I got into my Ironman bed, the difference was amazing. I like that the temperature seems to be adjusted and I am no longer too hot or cold. We are both very satisfi ed, not only with the mattress, but with the delivery and set up. We have recommended the mattress to friends, chiropractors and doctors.

- Shirley A., Parksville, BC andPenny A., North Vancouver, BC

“When you play 162 games of baseball a year, sleep recovery becomes extremely important. Since I started sleeping on the IRONMAN T3 RECOVERY MATTRESS, my sleeps have been deeper, and my morning aches and pains are completely gone. I was skeptical at fi rst, but after sleeping on the IRONMAN T3 RECOVERY MATTRESS for only a couple of months, I am amazed with the improvement of my sleep, performance, and most importantly my life. I will never sleep on another mattress!” - Taylor Green, Milwaukee Brewers

“I am an injured ex-military veteran with 4 compressed vertebrae. Prior to sleeping on our IRONMAN T3 RECOVERY MATTRESS I tossed and turned all night, hardly sleeping at all. Now, I fall asleep within minutes and wake up feeling the most incredible amount of energy! This is a FANTASTIC mattress!”

- Jerry Zimmerman, Comox, BC

“I have chronic whiplash from a prior car accident. For the two weeks prior to getting the delivery of our IRONMAN T3 RECOVERY MATTRESS, I had to take Advil every night, so I could fall asleep. I have not had to take anything since I have been sleeping on my new mattress. I have NEVER SLEPT SO WELL!”

- Jodie Zimmerman, Comox, BC

The Cortes Island Museum is sponsoring two overnight excursions to Toba Inlet Waterfalls on Saturday/ Sunday, July 7-8 and Thursday/Friday, July 28-29.

Cruise into the heartland of the Klahoose peoples’ territory aboard Misty Isles. You’ll cruise Desolation Sound en route to Toba Inlet, where the mountains rise straight out of the green glacial inlet and waterfalls thunder down from the melting ice fi elds.

Few people have the opportunity to visit this remote and scenic part of the inside coast.

Your naturalist guide, skipper Mike Moore, will share a wealth of information about the birds, plants, animals, and marine life that inhabit the area.

That night you will stay in Toba

Wildernest Lodge’s snug hostel-style cabins or you can pitch your tent. There is a short hike behind the lodge to a picturesque waterfall that provides hydro power to the lodge. You will dine on barbequed wild salmon and can enjoy a soak in the beachside hot tub. Bring a bathing suit and make sure not to forget your camera and binoculars.

Misty Isles will depart at 10:30 a.m. from Cortes Bay. Participants from off island should catch the 8:30 a.m. ferry from Campbell River to Quadra Island which connects to the 9:05 a.m. ferry from Heriot Bay to Cortes Island where you walk on.

When you arrive in Whaletown a shuttle service is provided to Cortes Bay.

The shuttle will return participants to Whaletown to catch

the 5:50 p.m. ferry off Cortes Island the next day.

The fee for this two day trip is $345 per person (HST included). It covers all meals and cabin accommodation. If you choose to tent the fee is $315 per person with your own equipment. Space is limited. For more information or to reserve please call (250-935-6340), e-mail: [email protected] or drop by the Cortes Museum.

The Cortes Museum has more summer trips scheduled in July and August: A new Low Tide Reef Exploration off Hernando Island (July 4), Mothership Kayaking in Von Donop Inlet (July 12), Cassel Lake and Waterfall (July 19), Round Maurelle Island (Aug. 4), and Desolation Sound (Aug. 10 and Aug. 22).

Summer long holiday weekends and warm days are here and Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is offering tips to help Canadians to stay safe while enjoying water activities.

“Being out in the water can be a lot of fun. But we need to remember that accidents do happen. This is why it’s important to review a few simple water safety tips every year,” says Lindsay Olson, Vice President, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba with IBC.

According to Canadian Red Cross, on average, more than 500 people drown every year in Canada.

This signifi cant number of water-related fatalities reinforces the need for water safety education.

Here are some water safety tips that will help you and your family enjoy this summer:

● Be aware of the risks in your region. Some areas may have

signifi cant snow melt resulting in high water fl ows. B

e extra cautious around fast-fl owing rivers and streams.

● Supervise children at all times.

● When swimming be aware of your limitations. Don’t go beyond your ability.

● Think before you dive. Ensure water depth is at least 10 feet deep. Remember the depth of lakes or oceans can change due to tides or seasons.

● When in, on and

around water, have everyone try on their lifejacket to see that it still fi ts and that all the zippers and buckles are in good working order. Lifejackets do save lives.

● When boating, always wear a lifejacket. Even in nice weather, even close to shore.

● Boat sober, “don’t booze and cruise” on the water.

● Familiarize yourself with basic lifesaving skills such as CPR in case of

emergency.● All water parks

and facilities should have a general set of security regulations for you to follow. Please read the rules!

● Keep emergency equipment and fi rst aid kits close at hand.

● Know before you go. Check the weather forecast before you go out on the water.
