A woman in Shunem believed strongly in the holiness of the

prophet Elisha. To reward her, Elisha promised that she and her

aging husband would, within the year, be the parents of a son.

Second Reading: Romans 6:3-4, 8-11

Paul explains to the Romans that by immersion in water at bap-

tism, they “die” to their sins; by rising from the water, they rise

from “death and sin” to new life in Christ.

Class of 2017

One of the happiest days of a young person’s life is graduation. Tears of joy flow from graduates, families, and friends aware that a goal has been attained. On Friday June 9, 35 students graduated from St. Patrick School while this past Friday 325 Chatham High School students graduated with over 95% moving on to colleges and universities. Last Thursday also brought another gradua-tion to Chatham which was Middle School graduation. The media floods us with an assortment of graduation speeches; last month Will Farrell made the headlines with his address at USC that included much humor, song, and an inspirational message, “Have the courage to be yourself…Most importantly, you have to do what you love.” Sheryl Sandberg, technology executive, activist, and au-thor, speaking to graduates at Virginia Tech University inspired many with her words, “We are more vulnerable than we ever thought, but we are stronger than we ever imagined…You will have good days and you will have hard days. Go through all of them together. Seek shared experiences with all kinds of people. Write shared narratives that create the world you want to live in. Build shared hope in the communities you join and the communities you form. And above all, find gratitude for the gift of life and the opportunities it pro-vides for joy and for love.”

A common thread that runs through graduation speeches is “make a difference”; yet, life has taught me that whatever a stu-

dent does in the aftermath of graduation makes a difference in ways some never recognize; however, the “difference” must be posi-tive. Differences do not always come through high level achievements that change society as some of the great inventors or political leaders attained, but often come through simple acts of kindness in ways people greet each other, show hospitality, respond to unex-pected needs, and exhibit optimism through cheerful attitudes that are brought to home, the workplace or school. These are some of the keys to self-worth that signify that a person is making a difference. A high-spirited approach to life reveals countless ways that people make a difference to each day. In her graduation speech at the Agnes Scott College, Oprah Winfrey put this message to grad-uates in stating that the biggest reward is not financial but living a life of substance. “Substance through your service. You’re offering of your whole self. And the baseline for how do you live a life of substance is whatever the truth is for you. What do you stand for?”

At the annual graduation liturgy at St. Patrick School my message to graduates was threefold: Surround yourself with friend-

ships of diverse personalities who will stretch you as a person and challenge you to grow. If you are introverted, find yourself some extroverted friends, if you are into sports, find yourself friends who are into the arts. Most of us share a common vision in life, howev-er we should develop some challenging ways to implement it. I also challenged the graduates to ask questions; lots of questions. Questions render an opportunity to hear from a wide range of people subject matter that guides a graduate to make Christ-like deci-sions. Questions also give opportunity to welcome information about personal lives that may be hurtful to hear, but lead to maturity and a well-rounded disposition. My third point was attitude; work to develop a positive attitude in life, which calls forth the opportunity to take charge of life so that you generate your own happiness. A wise friend of mine once said to me, “Many people will leave a posi-tive impact on your life, and bring you extreme amounts of joy, love, and happiness, but nobody will bring it all. We are responsible for our own happiness.”

On behalf of St. Patrick Church, I express my congratulations to all who make up the Class of 2017. Press forth the oppor-

tunity to develop social skills that begin to identify the values and ethics that are to be modeled through life. A Christian system of values presupposes a life substantiated through personal prayer, respect, and equality, acceptance of all cultures and religions, and unlocked opinions or judgments on some of the complex issues that render division to societies or even churches. FAITH FORMATION

Catechists/Co-Catechists Needed

Preparations for the next Faith Formation school year begin in

the summer! We are always in need of catechists. All the mate-

rials are provided. Catechists can be assigned to teach their

child’s class or a different grade/class, if preferred. Come and

share your faith with our children! If you are interested in serving

as a catechist or co-catechist for the 2017-2018 Faith Formation

100th Anniversary 1917-2017

In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of

Fatima, join us for a First Saturday Devo-

tion: July 1, August 5, and September 2. At

the heart of this devotion is the request of

Our Lady, Mary, that we pray for peace in

the world. Join us for the Rosary at 7:40 am

followed by the 8 am mass. Mass will be

followed by 15 minutes of meditation.

such a beautifully gentle description of a love that is inde-

scribable.

God cares for you with an all-encompassing care. It is a

care that surpasses your own concern for yourself. God has a

more thorough and intimate knowledge of you than you yourself

possess. For even you do not have so fervent an interest in your-

self as to have counted all of the hairs on your head. Rest in this

monumental love that God has for you.

Food Pantry Update

Corpus Christi Collection—THANK YOU to all who supported

our Feast of Corpus Christi Collection to support local food pan-

tries during the summer months. We collected more than 250

bottles of shampoo and conditioner that were transported to the

diocese collection center on Monday.

Forget Me Not Weekend—Our July collection will take place

next weekend, the 1st and 2nd. As this is a ‘holiday weekend’ , if

you would like to donate items prior to the weekend, they can be

brought to the parish offices during regular business hours.

Throughout the summer the office will accept food donations

during the week. Thank you for your continued support of this

important ministry that serves so many in our community. Summer Reading

Looking for a good book? Visit our Parish Library and check out

our large selection. Over 1200 books to choose from with new

additions added regularly. Library is located in the Parish Office

building and is open during regular business hours Monday

through Friday.

Do you feel called to be a Eucharistic Minister to the Sick?

Have you wondered about this ministry or if it is a place you

might share your gifts? In our community there are those who

are unable to attend Sunday mass for prolonged periods. The

liturgy of the Eucharist is never self-contained but in its deepest

meaning reaches out to the entire world. Those who carry Holy

Communion to the sick and confined, continue the community’s

act of worship, extending its embrace to include those unable to

be physically present. It is not necessary for an EM to the sick to

be a Liturgical EM and training is provided.

MUSIC MINISTRY

Music Ministry at St. Patrick

I love being a part of this parish family! I welcome you to increase your involvement with our family by trying music ministry.

We need people to inspire and lead our sung prayer. For a parish this size, music takes lots of people of different ages and talents. The idea behind Catholic choirs is that they represent the congre-gation. In September, new people are needed in all areas to help with music ministry at all our masses.

There is a great need for adults-especially young adults in their 20’s and 30’s. We need at least twenty teenagers for the Sunday 5:00 pm mass who play instruments or sing. We have a tremen-dous opportunity for upper elementary and middle school stu-dents with our Boys Choir and Girls Choir. We are looking for beginners just starting elementary school. We also need students and adults who can play instruments.

I know that everyone in this town is very busy. Our current choir members are extremely busy. However, with more people, we can get more done when others are absent. If you think you could participate in half our masses and rehearsals, we need you! Some time investment in spiritual life can be a good thing.

There is a simple check to see if you’re qualified: ask yourself if you enjoy singing. If the answer is yes, you’re qualified to sing in one of our five choirs. Having a strong voice or extensive musical experience is not a requirement. If you’ve played an instrument for three years or more, you might be able to share that skill at mass. We learn by doing.

Participating in music ministry can change your life. Music can alleviate depression and provide relief from stress. The tunes of scripture are carried in our minds and hearts. Singing in a choir is really fun for many people, and provides a break from the de-mands made on us during the week. For both children and adults, choir builds faith, relationships, the brain, happiness, and confi-dence.
