PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Gratitude and engagement are in my mindset as I write my final Kol Yonah article as
the President of Beth Sholom. I thank you so much for the opportunity you granted
me to serve this congregation as a leader. I loved the experience because I witnessed
individuals and committees creating, facilitating, leading, and sharing Jewish experi-
ences for all of us to engage. I totally grew as a Jew serving you.
No one can serve as President without the support of the congregants, and that holds
true for me. I want to thank every member for their commitment to be a member of
BST; without members, we would not be who we are, period! I also want to thank
every Board Director that served with me as President. I LOVE passionate, collective
and cognizant thinking based decision-making. To continue with my gratitude, I am
thankful for all the working bee minyons at BST; the ones which engage in the detail work of our
synagogue’s mission. There are three families who strengthen my foundation with their endless
help, even without asking, so I could serve you: The Gettlins, The Wolf-Robertsons, and the
Frieds, todah rabah!
The ultimate thank you goes to my family, especially to my husband, Michael Purnell, for his
unconditional support and sacrifice toward my desire to lead Beth Sholom Temple.
As we transition to the next year, continue to support Beth Sholom’s leadership in the work to strengthen the goals of
our synagogue.
Strengthening Beth Sholom Temple (BST) is a goal for each of its generations; not one generation can solve all of BST
challenges or secure its might. Therefore, BST, our Jewish synagogue, requires a partnership between the genera-
tions. Each generation will improve our synagogue as far as it can. We must educate our children and pass on the mis-
sion to the next generation, until the goal is reached.
In Rabbi Tarfon’s teachings, we are not to be arrogant; not to think that you alone can finish the job. We need to
trust in every generation and generations yet unborn to take up the task. Know that you are part of the living chain of
people who have dreamed, worked for a better world and carried on this mission for four thousand years in an unbro-
ken covenant.
See you at shul !
Am Israel Chai!

RABBI’S MESSAGE As of the first of June, we are 39 days into counting the 49 days of the Omer. The Torah
teaches us that we are to count the days from our Redemption, freedom from slavery on Pesach,
to our Revelation, the receiving of Torah on Sinai. According to our Tradition, Psalm 90 reads, “
So teach us to number our days, that we may get us a heart of wisdom.” By being conscious of
our days, looking for ways of doing mitzvahs each day, we make our days count. By making our
days count, we, in turn, make our lives count, as well as those lives around us, gaining for our-
selves a heart of wisdom.
One thing that we, as Jews, can do is celebrate our holidays together. At the
end of the counting of 49 days, the 50th day is Shavuot. Shavuot (literally “Weeks”) was tradi-
tionally a harvest festival. In the days of the Temple, Jewish farmers made pilgrimage to the Temple to offer first
grains and fruits of spring. Although such a festival may seem foreign to our modern sensibilities, Shavuot is one of
the most profound holidays mentioned in the Torah.
Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave the Torah to the entire nation of Israel
assembled at Mount Sinai, although the association between the giving of the Torah and Shavuot is not explicit in the
biblical text. The holiday is one of the Shalosh Regalim, the three biblical Pilgrimage Festivals. It marks the conclu-
sion of the Counting of the Omer.
The Evening of Shavuot includes the holiday’s most noteworthy custom, Tikkun Leil Shavuot, “Set
Order of Study for the Night of Shavuot”. This Kabbalistic custom ensured that the 49th day of the Counting of the
Omer was undeniably completed; the night is meant to inspire a sense of restless anticipation and awe on the night
preceding the Giving of the Torah.
The evening is accentuated with the richness of dairy foods, as the medieval commentary, Kol Bo,
suggests that part of a verse of Song of Songs—“Honey and milk are under your tongues” (4:11)—alludes to the Torah.
Therefore, the words of Torah should be as pleasing to our minds and hearts, as milk and honey are to our tongues.
Come to celebrate the holiday together, as we explore our taste buds of learning, spirituality, and of
course, community. Join us Shavuot morning, Sunday, June 12, at 10:00a as we fulfill the obligation of remembrance
with our Shavuot Yizkor service.

SISTERHOOD Dear Temple Members,
It is with no joy, that I announce that Sisterhood is on Sabbatical this year.
Due to an inability to obtain enough candidates for office, chair people or participation, those that remained agreed that we would assist temple in program execution and managing the Bagel Bar and Gift Shop.
We are attempting to rebuild - but that is a choice that is up to the members and those who are temple, but not Sisterhood members.
Please feel free to phone, email or text me your thoughts, comments and/or suggestions. [email protected] [email protected] (757)869-5920

GIFT CARDS Ladies and Gentlemen, I want to remind you of two fabulous ways to make donations to Beth Sholom Temple with no out of pocket expense. 1) the gift card (shopwithscrip.com)program. 2) AmazonSmile The first one has been around for years but very few of us are using it. You can buy several types of gift cards from Ellen Grady at Sunday bagel bar. Better yet, do it online and choose from over 700 stores, big box stores, restaurant chains and online retail-ers. Just about anywhere you go in Central Park or South Point or Aquia for food, clothes, electronics, gas, movies, book stores, sporting goods, home & garden--everything! Go to www.shopwithscrip.com/shop to browse them. The donation rate ranges widely:
2.5% from Walmart 4% at Giant (alas Wegman’s does not participate) 6% at Walgreens and CVS 10% at Macy’s 10% at Chipotle and other restaurants 13% at LL Bean, J. Crew and Lands End
You can get physical cards or electronic coupons to use from your phone, tablet or PC. Think about how much you spend on these items. $500 per month? $1000 per month? Multiply by a conservative 5% and then by 100 families. $30,000 to 60,000 to the temple annually. Even if we each just did a fraction of our spending this way the benefit is great. Amazon Smile You can support Beth Sholom Temple financially by shopping on Amazon.com If you use Smile.Amazon.com and select BST as your charity of choice, 0.5% of your purchases will be donated to BST. If you use Amazon, how much do you spend annually? Don’t keep track? Here’s a hint. The average is $1500. Guess when most of that is spent? Between now and January. So I urge you to make the small extra effort to go to Amazon Smile and select BST as your charity of choice. The key is to go to the Smile page first before you shop. You can still use Prime. So let’s do some simple math: $1500 per year X 0.5% X 100 families is $7500 per year to Beth Sholom Temple. That’s in addition to the gift card purchases above. And if you buy Amazon gift cards on ShopWithScrip before you shop on Smile, you increase that to 4.5%! This time of year is when a ton of disposable income gets spent. With a little effort we can start raising much needed funds for our congregation. Even if you use Amazon Smile to donate to a different charitable organization, you are doing a great thing. I'll call that a win for BST. Please make the effort and contact me or Ellen Grady if you have questions. Michael Camber [email protected] 540-841-9209. Ellen’s email is [email protected].

ONEG SHABBAT POLICY & ONEG SCHEDULE
ONEG SHABBAT GUIDELINES Here at Beth Sholom, members are given the mitzvah
and privilege of hosting the Oneg Shabbat. The Oneg pro-vides us with the opportunity to delight in Shabbat, to-gether in community. The Oneg is also our first impression for guests to Beth Sholom Temple. It is our honor to make it a warm and welcoming event in our congregational home. You are encouraged to take ownership of this honor. Some things you can do to make Oneg more fun and inviting are: incorporate a theme – is there a holiday coming up? Or you might consider referencing the Torah portion for the week through a creative use of food, or even using your team’s Oneg to thank a committee, or just celebrate the Temple family in a special way! Please use the guidelines below when considering your upcoming Oneg.
1. The list of Oneg Family assignments is available on the website, and here, in the Kol Yonah.
2. If you are NOT able to participate in your assigned Oneg, please notify the lead family of your group so appropriate arrangements may be made (lead family, please ask your fellow team members about taking over if you need to switch). It is your responsibility to switch with another family, and to inform the office of this change.
3. Prior to the Oneg, contact all team members to discuss who will bring the necessary items and other refreshments. Necessary Items: Challah, Kosher Red Wine, Kosher Grape Juice; Refresh-ment Suggestions: Fruit & Veggie Tray, Dips & Cheeses, Cookies & Cakes, Beverages
4. Try to arrive 30 minutes prior to service to set up; see the website at http://www.bstva.org/onegs.html for full instructions on set-up.
5. Clean up by taking dirty linens home for washing and either take food home or store appropriate left-overs in the refrigerator and freezer for re-freshments after Saturday morning service. A cleaning team will come in on Friday evenings af-ter Oneg to take care of washing dishes, vacuum-ing, and taking out the garbage. Please visit the website at http://www.bstva.org/onegs.html for additional instruction and suggestions.
Thank you! David Coman VP of Administration
