CANTOR’S CORNERThanks to the High Holydays Choir Cantor Ira Greenstein

I am writing this column to thank this fine group of volunteers. The choir has been around since the main Chizuk Amuno service moved to Stevenson in 1962 with its paid professionals. To replace them for the now-second service, “alumni” and others re-formed a High Holydays (HH) choir at Eutaw Place. The choir was all male at that point. Hazzan Abba Weisgal remained here, with his son Hugo as choir director in the “choir loft” above the bimah. Abba was succeeded by Hazzan Joe Levine in 1973, Hugo still above; Joe had been the only Assistant to Abba, about 20 years before. In 1974, for the year round Cantor duties, Harry London (z”l), Cantor Emeritus following his retirement took on the role of Cantor, but he had other commitments for HH, so Hugo took over High Holydays Cantorial duties in 1974-76, at which point the choir moved to the bimah itself. When the HH “Weisgal era” ended in 1977 (it started in 1922), Harry took over year round and women joined the choir for the first time.

Though it was Chizuk Amuno until 1974, Beth Am owes a lot to those choir members who joined including the single “paid” professional and the alumni who provided the continuity. The HH choir could have dissipated.

For the record, I came to Beth Am in 2000, so this was my 15th HH leading the choir. I was assisted during the first two summers by Jane Ruback (z”l), who rehearsed the choir…and rehearsed the

Cantor, too, because it took me a couple of years to learn all the choir material and catch up to the choir membership. Singing Jane’s warm-up vocal exercises was harder than the music for me, for example, a full speed rendition of “red leather, yellow leather, red leather, yellow leather…”up and down scales tied up my tongue. Try it some time.

Even today, a new choir member typically takes several years to learn the materials fully, in four-part (soprano-alto-tenor-bass) harmony – it’s formidable, but obviously doable. I think choir members would agree that it is worth it, as they mostly keep volunteering in successive years, and some return after they take time off for family. It’s a wonderful tradition. With (I think) one exception, I have not actively “recruited” new choir members. For the time commitment it entails, I believe that membership should come without pressure from me and with great gratitude from all of us.

For a new member to learn the music, we have choir binders. The music is more-or-less fully written out (some would say more, some would say less)…but the best teacher may be listening to and singing parts with the person next to you. This means that everyone in the choir is a teacher/mentor, and the resulting esprit is imposing. We spend 30 hours together before the holydays (some people also “study” independently) and people come as often as they can, but the fact is that the

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVEScott Zeger

At Yom Kippur, I had the honor to address you for my second and last time as President of the Board of Trustees for which I will forever be grateful. The con-tinuity of Jewish living in Baltimore City and at Beth Am, was the topic on my mind. As I looked out from the bimah that day, the thought that, if we can build a robust community at Beth Am today, our children may sit in these seats (hopefully with different cushions) in 40 years. That aspiration brought a proverbial tear to my eye.

As practical people, Jews tend to address big ideas like continuity with concrete examples, and so I turned the talk to our elevator and bathrooms. In short, the Board wants the elevator and bathrooms to demonstrate functional con-tinuity, especially on the High Holydays. This year, the elevator did not; neither did our server. Clergy and staff did not have access to our databases or to Beth Am emails for much of the High Holydays.

As your President, let me proclaim on all our behalf: “Oy vey ist mir.” And, despite the local discontinuities, the clergy, staff and lay volunteers made High Holydays 5775 among the best we have known since joining Beth Am.

It is appropriate that the server failed, because, having sniffed out the risk, David Demsky had already volunteered to work with Henry Feller as a two-person IT task force whose job is to plan a 21st century system before we get to the 22nd. David developed a detailed and modern (think

clouds) proposal that was enthusiastically endorsed by the Executive Committee and that is scheduled for Board action this month. It will take a few months to implement, but when done, Under Armour will have nothing but athletic gear on Beth Am. David’s engagement with the IT planning is an example of what makes Beth Am special. We had a problem; he volunteered to fix it.

For continuity’s sake, the elevator and bathrooms are also going to get fixed: and more. In October, the Executive Committee had an “initial” (13th over nine years) working meeting with Architects Charles Alexander and Eric Lewis to discuss the parameters of reno-vations of our historic Sperry Building, the first major ones in 90+ years. We saw inspiring proposals for the ground floor, including a small addition with open-sky courtyard. Drooling would be a kind description for what could be seen on the faces of the Beth Am’ers. One stimulating design question is whether we can create an intimate space for smaller worship groups in the sanctuary while retaining its grandeur for High Holydays and B’nai Mitzvah. Julie Gottlieb is leading a task force of eight worshipers to continue that conversation off line. Stay tuned for exciting ideas which will be circulated when formulated.

In summary, Beth Am will assure continuity of Jewish living in, for and of Baltimore City - elevators, bathrooms, servers, and much more.

CONGREGATIONAL LEARNINGRabbi Kelley Gludt

With the holidays behind us and fall in the air, there is no better time to join your Beth Am community on Shabbat for services. We welcome all of our members, regardless of age, at each of our Shabbat services, but in an attempt to ensure that everyone has the opportunity for meaningful, relevant and enjoyable prayer experiences, Beth Am offers a variety of services in addition to Kesher and Sanctuary Shabbats.

On the first Saturday of every month, Shabbat Lab meets at 10:45 am in the Chapel. Gil Kline, our outstanding Lab music teacher, joins me in leading a family-oriented service for children in elementary school and their parents. We encourage both our dayschool and Lab families to attend this service. We often assign specific roles to our young people based on age or grade, so everyone can come and enjoy listening to our students lead davening, layning Torah and sharing words of wisdom with a d’var Torah. The service is filled with music and serves as a “learner’s minyan,” offering explanations for various prayer customs, introduc-tions to pieces of our liturgy, and lots of discussion.

On the second and fourth Shabbat of each month, our younger members (toddler through age four) are blessed to pray, learn and sing with Aviva and Leora Match at Shabbat Yachad. These two sisters, both of whom study at Towson University, have a long and varied past leading services in their home congregation. They always

come prepared with fun activities, new ways to engage our little ones in prayer, and tons of energy. A snack is also served. This service begins at approximately 10:45 am in the Chapel. (On days when there is a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, Shabbat Yachad meets following candy throwing in the Sanctuary.)

We are thrilled to continue Junior Congregation, a service geared toward students in the third through sixth grades. This year, Junior Congregation, a tradition-al and ruach (spirit)-filled prayer service, will be lead by Rabbi Burg. Make certain your children take advantage of this op-portunity to spend some quality time with their rabbi, praying, learning, singing and having the opportunity to explore Judaism together. Junior Congregation meets at 10:15 am in the Chapel. Dates vary, check the Beth Am calendar for details.

We prioritize creating prayer spaces for all of Beth Am’s congregants. Please feel free to explore all of our services to discover which service in which you feel most at home. See you on Shabbat!

quotes before a Sunday game. I contend that our choir collectively sounds awfully good…they sound like a choir rather than a group of paid professionals. It may lack some polish and tone, it may sometimes be challenged to keep the pitch up, but it is a team effort. You can all be the judges. I think the fact that they are all volunteer and are people you know, means a lot to you. In most of the polling I have seen, the choir gets high marks, so they must be doing it right.

I would pass along one last observation: the Weisgall family also thinks the choir sounds wonderful (note, they spell the last name with two l’s). Family members still come to HH services each year and sit in the old choir loft. I am unaware of any parallel, where a family comes to listen in a meaningful space to the music of a service 40 years later, even with some changes in the musical selection. I cannot think of any more impressive compliment about our choir than a nod from the Weisgalls.

For the effort they put in and the quality result, the choir should be proud and YOU should be thankful. Please give any choir members you know a big hug and a thank-you when you see them.

choir is never entirely in the same place at the same time until the services begin. (Admittedly, it creates a mild “heartburn” for the Cantor.)

I should note that choir members are primarily YOU…congregants who devote their own energies and talents to enhancing the quality of your HH services. Their heart is all into it. Sure, rehearsals may be a bit light-hearted at times, but services are a profound experi-ence for us all. I would be remiss in NOT noting that we also currently have four non-congregants who sing with the group. The first started (I think) in 2005…the music is challenging, the text is moving, but I believe that the appeal is fundamen-tally spiritual. Like congregant members, they realize what their participation means to all of you. Let me emphasize again, this is an all-volunteer group.

A couple of years ago, there was a running dialogue on “Hazzanet” (the e-mail “blog” for us Cantor types) about volunteer versus paid choir members. One Cantor encouraged us all to push for paid professional choirs, which sound so much better to him. I read this posting to our Beth Am choir, like the football coach reads the opposing team player

Which of the following excites you:A) Building community with other families at Beth AmB) Learning, both with your children and separately as adultsC) The idea of traveling to IsraelD) All of the above

If you answered “D” then we invite you to consider being part of a new and innovative opportunity: L’eilah u’L’eilah, a Family Israel Experience.

We are looking to gather a group of families who will commit to going to Israel together in 2018. During the next four years, families will have the time to develop a personal savings plan, and the group will gather regularly to connect with one another through learning and social events.

We have hired a wonderful Israeli educator who will be working with us for the next few years. We will have a kickoff weekend with him here at Beth Am the weekend of December 12-14, 2014. Therefore, we are hoping to have a group put together by mid-November so that we can plan appropriately for the beginning of this unusual and exciting project.

Please send an e-mail to Rabbi Miriam Burg at [email protected] if you are interested and/or have questions. Local programming will be funded in part by a JEEP grant from The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore.

It’s the voice. And the songwriting. And when performing live, Ari Hest sounds better than the recordings, something you rarely see these days. Hailing from Bronx, NY his introspection and intelligence are consistently on display, creating moments of magic within his poetic, spare lyrics and haunting melodies. His just released Shouts and Whispers is his 8th studio album. As a break from making albums, he introduced the world to 52 back in 2008, an innovative project of songs written, recorded and released once a week for a full year. Throughout his career, Hest has toured worldwide to support his records, most recently in Europe, and has built the kind of loyal fan base any musician would envy. In the past couple of years, he toured nationally with Judy Collins, Ani Difranco and Suzanne Vega. His music has been featured on numerous television shows including Private Practice, Army Wives, and One Tree Hill. Recently, Ari’s song The Landlord appeared in an episode of NPR’s All Things Considered. Hest also scored a film called Dreamriders which won several independent film awards in 2009.

Shelby Blondell is a young singer/songwriter from Linthicum MD. She wrote her first song on guitar when she was nine years old, without having had any lessons and knew then that music was her calling. She has played with Howie Day, Aaron Carter, Ginny Blackmore, He Is We, The Scene Aesthetic, Plug in Stereo, Carter Hulsey, 2AM CLUB, Tiffiany Alvord, Sonia Leigh, Alex Goot and Luke Conard. “I write music not only because I absolutely love doing it, but I write songs with a background to them. Music is not only a hobby but it is the biggest influence in my life.”

October 18A special donation was made to the Floral Fund in memory of Joseph O. Goldenberg, by his children Barbara Gamse, Jack Goldenberg, Lorraine Schapiro, and JoAnn Stolley, on his yahrzeit.

THANK YOU to all who came out to Reservoir Hill Improvement Council’s Whitelock Harvest Fest on October 12. The event was a success, with Beth Am once again sponsoring the popular “Kugel Cook-off,” alongside a Sukkot booth to shake the lulav and etrog.

Congratulations to first place Kugel Cook-Off winner Dovey Kahn and second place winner Ellie Burg! We also congratulate the winners of the greens cook-off: Doron Kutnick, AC, Daniel, Nita, and celebrity judge Randy Rans.

A special thanks to Bonnie Guralnick, one of Beth Am’s In, For and Of the Neighborhood volunteers, and all who helped facilitate Beth Am’s involvement in Harvest Fest. We look forward to continuing to work with RHIC and the greater community in the future.

Speaking OF the Neighborhood
