On March 11, Dr. Clara M. Chu, a Professor in the Department of Library and Information Studies at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, delivered the keynote presentation. She talked about fostering innovation in the classroom through the creation of makerspaces. We partnered with UNCW faculty as well as teachers from the community presenting workshops on implementing music in the classroom, childhood obesity, teaching writing, weather, integration and engineering with fairy tales. On March 13, Laura Hunter, the Professional Development Coordinator for Brunswick County Schools, deliv- ered the keynote presentation entitled “From Lecturn to Labcoat.” Some of the featured workshops, were Inquiry: Student-Centered and Teacher-Guided, Formative Assessment, Socratic Seminars, Assessing Social Studies, and Flipped Classroom Integration. Middle and High School teachers had an exciting Q &A with community members – Ms. Elizabeth Redenbaugh, Mr. Lucas McLawhorn and Ms. Lynn Shoemaker. Thank you to all that gave their time and shared terrific ideas to use in the classroom.

Professional Learning Days Spring 2014

The PDS Office hosted two professional learning days on March 11 and 13

On March 11 Dr Clara M Chu a Professor in the Department of Library

and Information Studies at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro

delivered the keynote presentation She talked about fostering innovation in the

classroom through the creation of makerspaces We partnered with UNCW

faculty as well as teachers from the community presenting workshops on

implementing music in the classroom childhood obesity teaching writing

weather integration and engineering with fairy tales On March 13 Laura Hunter

the Professional Development Coordinator for Brunswick County Schools deliv-

ered the keynote presentation entitled ldquoFrom Lecturn to Labcoatrdquo Some of the

featured workshops were Inquiry Student-Centered and Teacher-Guided

Formative Assessment Socratic Seminars Assessing Social Studies and Flipped

Classroom Integration Middle and High School teachers had an exciting Q ampA

with community members ndash Ms Elizabeth Redenbaugh Mr Lucas McLawhorn

and Ms Lynn Shoemaker Thank you to all that gave their time and shared

terrific ideas to use in the classroom

The UNCW AIG program hosted its annual conference

on May 8 2014 The keynote speaker was Rick Courtright

PhD Rick is a gifted education Research Specialist at Duke

University Talent Identification Program Dr Courtrightrsquos

presentation was on ldquoIssues in the Social and Emotional

World of GiftedTalented Children and Youthrdquo There was

also an additional presentation on AIG students across grade

levels that talked about how their social-emotional needs were

addressed by their instructional or school experiences to what

extent the school community may have been involved in meet-

ing their social and emotional needs and offered some recom-

mendations for improvement Participants discussed state

standards differentiation and assessment Approximately 45

participants attended to discuss the design and use of rigorous

activities and assessments for students identified as academi-

Spring Site Coordinator Meetings and Partnership Teacher Workshops

This spring the PDS office hosted two site coordinator meetings In the meetings the PDS Director and site

coordinators discussed the varieties of lesson plans that schools use as well as the use of online programs that allow

principals to have access to everyonersquos lesson plans Using online planning tools teachers can link sites to their

lesson plan books and have an easier time collaborating Site coordinators also discussed leadership opportunities for

interns by having them lead a PTA night facilitate a PLC meeting or assist the partnership teacher with a school-wide

initiative The PDS office also hosted two partnership teacher workshops this spring For this academic year 79 teach-

ers have completed the online partnership teacher preparation modules 143 partnership teachers attended a face-to-

face workshop and 43 site coordinators attended a site coordinator meeting The PDS office has established web pag-

WCErsquos Professional Development System Receives

2014 NAPDS Exemplary Achievement Award

The Watson College of Educationrsquos Professional

Development System (PDS) Partnership has received

a national award for exemplary achievement The award

given by the National Association for Professional

Development Schools (NAPDS) was announced March 28

at the 15th annual PDS National Conference in Las Vegas

The NAPDS Award for Exemplary PDS Achievement was

created in 2009 to recognize school-university partnerships

that successfully prepare teacher candidates for the classroom

by embracing active engagement in P-12 schools Selection for

the award is based on significant advancements in the nine

essentials of PDS work detailed in the April 2008 NAPDS

statement titled ldquoWhat it Means to be a Professional

Development Schoolrdquo

AIG students discussed their educational experiences

Directorrsquos Report for 2013-14

The selection of our Professional Development System for a national award was a fitting end to this year and to

my tenure as PDS Director This award represents more than twenty years of dedicated work to build and

sustain our P-12 partnerships across the region and in so doing to improve the quality of teaching and learning

in our partnership schools In 2013-2014 11032 partnership teachers school administrators university faculty

interns and other school partners participated in 13 professional development conferences 345 seminars 48

partnership orientations teacher intern preparation (online session developed for each and now offered

continuously) and 45 professional initiatives for a total of 451 sessions with 18553 contact hours These

numbers are collected annually by Candace Blanke our administrative associate in PDS The numbers include

all partnership teacher workshops offered directly through PDS professional learning days site seminars

facilitated by our site coordinators partnership meetings attended by the PDS Director conferences sponsored

andor supported by PDS and cultural arts events for educators (sponsored by the office of Cultural Arts in

partnership with PDS)

This year we continued several initiatives Our Master Teachers created a Twitter hashtag (tealTeach) We

have disseminated that hashtag several times It provides a space for teachers to share teaching ideas The group

also is maintaining a blog site located at httpuncwmasterteacherblogspotcom In our meetings we discussed

current issues facing teacher educators and ways for the Watson College to provide support for new and veteran

teachers The Partnership in Action Schools Program started its first full year Six faculty worked with three

schools Amy Garrett-Dikkers and Eddie Caropreso worked with Trask High School in Pender County Denise

Ousley-Exum and Marsha Carr worked with Cedar Grove Middle School in Brunswick County Jeanne

Swafford and David Gill worked with Carolina Forest Elementary in Onslow County Partners and faculty are

currently providing feedback on the program and process We will use that information to improve the program

for next year We also started hosting meetings on campus with School Board members This year we hosted

members from the New Hanover County Schools Board of Education and Brunswick County Board of

Education We discussed Watsonrsquos academic programs and current issues facing educators today

This year we have also tried to extend our collaborations with CESTEM We facilitated a conversation with

representatives from the Education Outreach Team at NASA Langley and interested public school partners

Approximately 20 people participated in this conversation (including Mr Roger Hathaway the Director of

NASA Langleyrsquos Education Outreach Program) From this conversation we hope to connect our P-12 schools

with the outstanding resources and personnel at NASA Our next conversation will include a demonstration of

NASArsquos Digital Learning Network In addition Brian Brinkley the Education Lab Director Dennis Kubasko

CESTEM Director Chris Gordon Assistant Director of CESTEM and I have been discussing ways to create a

Makerspace affiliated with the Watson College of Education A MakerSpace is a space that facilitates the

design engineering and construction of varied products Though these spaces can house a variety of

equipment many makerspaces include 3d printers ShopBots 3d scanners and laser cutters We visited the

FabLab in Baltimore (httpwwwfablabbaltimoreorg) the Digital Media Center and Makerspace at Johns

Hopkins University (httpdigitalmediajhuedu) and the Maker Faire in Raleigh NC (http

wwwmakerfairenccom) In the fall we plan to hold an open meeting to share our preliminary thoughts about

creating a makerspace We will invite interested faculty and staff to discuss the idea

2014 Roy E Harkin Award Winner Congratulations to Debra Bryant partnership teacher at Lejeune High School in Camp Lejeune for being the

spring 2014 recipient of the Roy E Harkin Teacher Recognition Award The award was established in 2008 in

memory of Dr Roy E Harkin who served as the chair of the Education Department at UNCW from 1976 to 1979

and then as Dean of the School of Education until 1991 This award is funded by the family and friends of Dr

Harkin in recognition of his commitment to partnerships with public schools and his appreciation for the

contributions of public school educators to the preparation of prospective teachers Nominations for this award are

accepted on a rotational basis from our 12 PDS partnership systems and charter schools The award is designed to

recognize a public school teacher who has contributed to the preparation of future teachers by demonstrating

excellence as a partnership teacher andor site coordinator

Her nominators had this to say about Debrsquos work ldquoDeb has been

teaching Health amp Physical Education for the past 29 years

including the last 9 years at Lejeune High School She has been an

outstanding Partnership Teacher for multiple UNCW Interns Her

interns serve an invaluable apprenticeship where they learn how to

effectively plan teach and assess students in high school health and

physical education In the program that Deb has created at

Lejeune High School the UNCW Interns have learned about

the ldquonew PErdquo that focuses on lifetime physical activity and

wellness Her interns have had the opportunity to teach

creative units including kayaking racquetball pickleball

and other inclusive activitiesrdquo

We extend a special thank you to Mrs Sandra Harkin

for her attendance as we also honor her late husbandrsquos legacy

PDS Office Welcomes New Director

Ms Somer Lewis currently serves as the Teacher-in-

Residence for the Watson College of Education

at UNCW where she coordinates both the First Years of

Teaching Support Program and the National Board Certifica-

tion Support Program Her professional teaching background

began in the fall of 2003 as an English educator at New

Hanover High School in Wilmington North Carolina During

her career Lewis has served as a partnership teacher and a

beginning teacher mentor Ms Lewis received her MA from

the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2007

and achieved her National Board Certification in

2008 Since 2009 she has also worked for North Carolina Vir-

tual Public School as a teacher course lead and course devel-

oper in the Credit Recovery Program As the Teacher-in-Residence she has facilitated workshops for beginning

teachers organized the Promise of Leadership Award Program and facilitated National Board sessions to support

teachers as they prepare to apply for National Board Certification Lewis can be reached at lewissuncwedu

She will begin her term as PDS Director on July 15

Brunswick Countyrsquos Cedar Grove Middle School students visited UNCW in April as part of the Watson College

of Educationrsquos Partnership in Action Schoolsrsquo Program

Cape Fear Center for Inquiry welcomed three new teachers Kristen Gray Jennifer LaFleur and Canesha Hewett

Camp Lejeune Schools DoDEA has adopted the Common Core Standards and is working towards implementing

those standards

Carteret County Schools was ranked 7th in Education by the NC Center for Afterschool Programs

Clinton City Schoolsrsquo Zulma Marin was a CenturyLink $5000 grant winner

Duplin County Schoolsrsquo teacher Jessica Fields was selected to be a part of the NEArsquos Master Teacher project

Jones County Schools Senior High School students Symone Brooks Raeqwon Brown Adrianna Fields and

Cyede Hill visited the State capital to meet with their representatives NC House Rep Pat McElraft and

NC Senator Harry Brown

Onslow County Schools welcomed new superintendent Rick Stout in March Mr Stout was formerly

superintendent in Scotland County Schools

Pender County High School JROTC were champions at the 4th Brigade Best of the Best Raider Competition in

Directorrsquos Report for 2013-14

The selection of our Professional Development System for a national award was a fitting end to this year and to

my tenure as PDS Director This award represents more than twenty years of dedicated work to build and

sustain our P-12 partnerships across the region and in so doing to improve the quality of teaching and learning

in our partnership schools In 2013-2014 11032 partnership teachers school administrators university faculty

interns and other school partners participated in 13 professional development conferences 345 seminars 48

partnership orientations teacher intern preparation (online session developed for each and now offered

continuously) and 45 professional initiatives for a total of 451 sessions with 18553 contact hours These

numbers are collected annually by Candace Blanke our administrative associate in PDS The numbers include

all partnership teacher workshops offered directly through PDS professional learning days site seminars

facilitated by our site coordinators partnership meetings attended by the PDS Director conferences sponsored

andor supported by PDS and cultural arts events for educators (sponsored by the office of Cultural Arts in

partnership with PDS)

This year we continued several initiatives Our Master Teachers created a Twitter hashtag (tealTeach) We

have disseminated that hashtag several times It provides a space for teachers to share teaching ideas The group

also is maintaining a blog site located at httpuncwmasterteacherblogspotcom In our meetings we discussed

current issues facing teacher educators and ways for the Watson College to provide support for new and veteran

teachers The Partnership in Action Schools Program started its first full year Six faculty worked with three

schools Amy Garrett-Dikkers and Eddie Caropreso worked with Trask High School in Pender County Denise

Ousley-Exum and Marsha Carr worked with Cedar Grove Middle School in Brunswick County Jeanne

Swafford and David Gill worked with Carolina Forest Elementary in Onslow County Partners and faculty are

currently providing feedback on the program and process We will use that information to improve the program

for next year We also started hosting meetings on campus with School Board members This year we hosted

members from the New Hanover County Schools Board of Education and Brunswick County Board of

Education We discussed Watsonrsquos academic programs and current issues facing educators today

This year we have also tried to extend our collaborations with CESTEM We facilitated a conversation with

representatives from the Education Outreach Team at NASA Langley and interested public school partners

Approximately 20 people participated in this conversation (including Mr Roger Hathaway the Director of

NASA Langleyrsquos Education Outreach Program) From this conversation we hope to connect our P-12 schools

with the outstanding resources and personnel at NASA Our next conversation will include a demonstration of

NASArsquos Digital Learning Network In addition Brian Brinkley the Education Lab Director Dennis Kubasko

CESTEM Director Chris Gordon Assistant Director of CESTEM and I have been discussing ways to create a

Makerspace affiliated with the Watson College of Education A MakerSpace is a space that facilitates the

design engineering and construction of varied products Though these spaces can house a variety of

equipment many makerspaces include 3d printers ShopBots 3d scanners and laser cutters We visited the

FabLab in Baltimore (httpwwwfablabbaltimoreorg) the Digital Media Center and Makerspace at Johns

Hopkins University (httpdigitalmediajhuedu) and the Maker Faire in Raleigh NC (http

wwwmakerfairenccom) In the fall we plan to hold an open meeting to share our preliminary thoughts about

creating a makerspace We will invite interested faculty and staff to discuss the idea

2014 Roy E Harkin Award Winner Congratulations to Debra Bryant partnership teacher at Lejeune High School in Camp Lejeune for being the

spring 2014 recipient of the Roy E Harkin Teacher Recognition Award The award was established in 2008 in

memory of Dr Roy E Harkin who served as the chair of the Education Department at UNCW from 1976 to 1979

and then as Dean of the School of Education until 1991 This award is funded by the family and friends of Dr

Harkin in recognition of his commitment to partnerships with public schools and his appreciation for the

contributions of public school educators to the preparation of prospective teachers Nominations for this award are

accepted on a rotational basis from our 12 PDS partnership systems and charter schools The award is designed to

recognize a public school teacher who has contributed to the preparation of future teachers by demonstrating

Teaching Support Program and the National Board Certifica-

tion Support Program Her professional teaching background

began in the fall of 2003 as an English educator at New

Hanover High School in Wilmington North Carolina During

her career Lewis has served as a partnership teacher and a

beginning teacher mentor Ms Lewis received her MA from

the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2007

and achieved her National Board Certification in

2008 Since 2009 she has also worked for North Carolina Vir-

tual Public School as a teacher course lead and course devel-

oper in the Credit Recovery Program As the Teacher-in-Residence she has facilitated workshops for beginning

teachers organized the Promise of Leadership Award Program and facilitated National Board sessions to support
