St. Francis Episcopal Church is a mis-

sion of the Episcopal Diocese of

    Missouri.

The Chaliceis the newsletter of St.

    Francis Episcopal Church, Eureka, and

is published at least 10 times per year.

    Submissions for The Chalice are

due approximately the 20th of each

    month and may be

    e-mailed to the Officeat

    [email protected].

Pastors CornerJesus said, Whoever welcomes you wel-

comes me, and whoever welcomes mewelcomes the one who sent

    me. (Matthew 10:40, Gospel reading

    for June 29)

At our June 2 meeting, the Worship & Music Committee and I

will begin designing a second weekend service of worship for St.

Francis. Attendance at our 10 a.m. Sunday morning service has

increased to the point that we are full. We will not grow, because it

appears to newcomers that theres no room for them. Technically,

thats not true. There are plenty of empty chairs in the front rows. But the perception when people walk in (particularly if theyre a

few minutes late) is that seats arent available for a family to sit

    together.

Welcoming people is a very high priority at St. Francis. We

are understandably proud of how friendly and hospitable we are.

One way well continue that hospitality is by ensuring that our Sun-

day morning service has plenty of room for newcomers and visi-

    tors.

This means that regular attenders of Sunday worship will have

to commitat least for a timeto come to the second service in-

stead. If we dont reduce the headcount at the 10 a.m. Sunday ser-

vice, we havent accomplished our goal of making our worship

space hospitable and welcoming. (And no, regular attenders of

Sunday worship arent helping by volunteering to just stop coming

    to church altogether!)

This is a big change for St. Francis. And change is scary. But

we are a dynamic and caring community, who enjoys spending

time together. Well make sure we continue to provide monthly

social activities and ministry opportunities that enable us to delightin one anothers company.

As long as we follow Jesus lead, we cannot fail -- Pastor Sally

KIDS KORNEROur Childrens Views on God and the Gospel

How would you feel if you saw Jesus today?

Kind of startled. I guess Id fall over maybe.

    Shocked

    Happy

    Amazed

    Reflections on the 2nd

    Sunday after Easter

Jesus tried to got dead. Then he got on the cross. Then he got blood on

    him.

He tried to do the ghost.

He can be everywhere at one time.

We dont need to see or touch God to believe in him.

I know the 3 words that Jesus says to your prayers: Yes, No, and I

    dont want to.

What do you think it was like seeing Jesus alive again?Hes a zombie.

What makes a zombie a zombie?

Someone who was alive, then dead, and becomes undeadgreen and

    raggedy.

    They eat peoples flesh.

They dont eat bread or fish.

Who saw Jesus alive in the story of the road to Emmaus?

Mary and Simon and Cleopas and the disciples.

Where is Jesus found alive today?

    All around the world.

Who are the people in heaven?

    People who believe in God.

Where does the Holy Spirit live?In your heart

    Everywhere

The Holy Spirit is all around you like an invisible tutu

    May 18 Bishops Committee Highlights

Members Present: Dan Card; Sally Weaver, Vicar; Bob Champlin; Sue Schmidt; Judy

Cody; Sylvia Ahmad; Jack Lauless; Jim Eckhardt, Junior Warden; Joe OReilly; Jackie

    Selle, Clerk.

    Opening Business:

    Opening prayer; joys and concerns

Bob Champlin moved that minutes from the April 22 meeting be approved; JoeOReilly seconded. The motion passed.

    Treasurers Report

Suzanne reported that we are still under pledge at this point. While it is not cur-

rently a serious concern, she and Nancy will review details and follow up as needed.

Judy Cody moved that the April financial report be approved subject to auditor ap-proval; Joe OReilly seconded. The motion passed.

    Vicars Report

The company that owns our copier will no longer support it due to its age. A usedone can be leased for $37 more per month than we currently pay. This includesmaintenance and all parts. The contract would be for 60 months. Joe OReilly

moved that we create such a lease with DNT for 60 months. Judy Cody seconded the

    motion. The motion passed.

The parish house lease is up in June. The landlord has indicated that she wouldoffer another three-year lease with a rent increase of 3% each year. This is lowerthan her initial proposal of a 5% annual increase. Joe OReilly moved that we accept

the lease as proposed; Sylvia Ahmad seconded. The motion passed.

Sally gave an update on average Sunday attendance. ASA appears to be slightly

lower, but this may be largely due to lower attendance as a result of bad weather thiswinter. Overall numbers look good for other Sundays. Sally proposed that she talk tothe Marketing Committee to explore ways to follow up with people who attend onceor twice and do not return rather than focus on why members leave as we already

know that information. The committee felt that this was a good idea.

Door-to-door visits are in Ashton Woods this year and are going well.

Sally suggested that the Worship and Music Committee discuss the possibility ofoffering a second worship service as we are at about 85% capacity. Kevin Broomsuggested that the Marketing and Communications Committee also be involved in

the discussion if the goal is to present this as a way to bring in new people.

Kevin Broom presented some of the outwardly focused goals that we began to

Pledge income has dropped, and we will continue to look for any trends in lapses inpledges that signify a pastoral concern or major financial concern for the parish inupcoming months. The Treasurers Report reflects a generous donation to the

Vicars Discretionary Funds, and all other expenses are in line with what we expect

for this time of the year.
