SAFETY BITSDespite what the failed dipsey doodle OilMagnate from Texas said about global warm-ing, the weather has indeed been changing.Storms are a bit more stormier, and rain whenit comes seems a bit heavier (last month’sride from the South even ran into a bit ofhail--bit early in the season for that!). In anyevent, even under normal conditions it paysfor motorcyclists to be observant of the roadsurface, especially on corners. Rain, espe-cially the heavier sort has a habit of washingsand and gravel out of unpaved places, espe-cially driveways, onto the road surface. Hit-ting a patch of that without awareness, espe-cially on a curve, and very especially on ablind curve where you don’t see it until you’rejust about on it, can lead to a skid and fall-

down. So be careful out there folks, and don’tride faster than you can see far enough aheadto be able to stop if necessary.

RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED, JOANN BARR FOR MARGE HUMPHREY WHO HAD TO LEAVE FOR A PREVIOIUS COMMITMENT

MAY MEETING MINUTESThere were 20 members in attendance for our May meeting at the Double Wide Grille in Cranberry. The meeting was preceded by a ride.It was wet and rainy and only a few members chose to ride to there. The restaurant was quite noisy so discussion was limited since we didnot have a separate room.

Sean Barrett was the winner of the 50/50. He took home $30.00.We had two new members join our club. Everyone please welcome Wes Biery from Cheswick and Vish Venkatesh .

MAY MEETING RIDES

THE NORTH RIDEby Ron Kranz (and thanks to Ron also for theRoute track from his home to the ZeilenopleExxon and thence the Ride by Ed (Syphoon)Syphan to the Double Wide and ultimately

back to Ron’s home)Many thanks to Ron Kranz for the Northern RideTrack file. There is a lot of information withinthis picture--which see. Weather was not an is-sue. It was cool with spurts of occasional lightrain. And, of course, we enjoyed the typicalSyphan brisk riding. Unique on the ricer werethree airheads, one Harley (Jeff) and onewethead GS (Glen). Wes is an airhead junkie. He also joined the club during the meeting. Wearrived in Evans City via Rt.528. I thought forsure Ed would use Franklin Rd.. but instead, heused the Evans City--Mars Road. This had us inMars just a bit before 5:30 PM.. From the Mars-Valencia Road we turned right onto Rt.228 andthen turned left at the appropriate cross road tothe strip mall and thence into the Double WideGrille. Had we taken the curvier Franklin Road, the route would have been left onto Rt.228 thenright and thence into the Double Wide Grille. That route would have been slightly closer. Butthe one Ed took was fine though.

RON

THE SOUTH RIDEThe folks on the ride to the Double Wide fromthe South beginning at the GetGo on Rte 51 justSouth of the US 70 & 51 exit, led by PresidentAdrian Marini ran into a bit more ‘interesting’weather. No one mentioned who was along onthe South Ride, but your editor presumes at leastAdrian and Leo Stanton were, as Leo was seenaboard his K75 after the meeting. And both Leoand Adrian mentioned not only rain, but hail--NOT the kind one sings about when “the gang’sall here,” but the nasty atmospheric sort. Adriansaid he left home wearing his rain suit, as thewet stuff had already started then. After that itwas patches of rain here and there and the doseof hail he and Leo mentioned. Such climaticevents are when fairings such as Adrian’s K-RSand Leo’s K75 come in really handy. In anyevent, the rides, North and South appear, de-spite the weather, to have been enjoyed by allwho went on them.

NORTH BREAKFAST RIDE

MAY 4TH., 2014by Walt Halaja

Really, only 5 were present this Sunday--John Allen, Jack Bramkamp, Carl Hartz, Ed Tatters, and myself--when we usually have 10 to 14 ormore! Thought maybe “Ed” Syphoned“--pun intended--off a couple of breakfast regulars like Ralph & Ron “the Camper” Kranz on his rideto the “Warther Wood Carving Museum in Ohio” etc. etc.. Only later I found out the Rain Spooked Ralph so he stayed home & I heard the“Camper” was visiting family out East. A few others were missing too, like Ron “ReddyK” Latkovic, Frank Beatrous, High Viz Tom, 2Spark McLaughlin--whom we hope can get thru his cancer treatments with flying colors and can be back in the saddle again soon. ...Well,I was happy to see “Big” Ed Tatters make it to breakfast even if he had to ride in a cage because he has been grounded for up to 8 weeksbecause of having suffered a rupture that was just repaired some days ago. For Ed to be grounded for up to 8 weeks is “big time” and wehope he can ride sooner than that! We had a good breakfast and with only 5 present we were all just about in the same conversation insteadof having many different ones going on at the same time! At one point the Rally subject came up and I started on a rampage, but Jack threwup his hands and stopped me in my tracks with “Lets don’t go there, Walt!!”, so I shut up! We had a good breakfast and my food was hot fora change. I took the photo so you could see who all was there and then we all headed home. I harvested 7 Fire Stations on the way home!!Am I the only one doing this? Well it doesn’t matter because it’s fun for me!

WARTHER MUSEUM RIDEby Sean Barrett

To those of you who stayed home on May 4th: You missed a great time. Although things looked ominous as I rode up to Zelienople to meetup with Ed Syphon, the weather held and we never did have any rain.

At Zelienople, I joined Kevin Hart, Ed Syphon, Jay Singh and Frank Beatrous . From there, Ed led us down two lane county rounds to

Page 11: JUNE 20142014/06/06  · clean & tidy, security, field games, T-shirt sales, coffee & tea hospi-tality or 50/50 sales. We had an enjoyable ride to the Double Wide Grill, some rain

Dover, Ohio. It was a three hour ride, but it didn’tseem so long and the roads were great with theclouds clearing as we entered Ohio. There was afair amount of flooding and high water, but nobad weather, ...alright--it was a little windy. I amnot sure what roads we were on, but I am prettysure it was Rte 39 thru most of Ohio.

If you have never been to the Warther Mu-seum, it is a must-see place. You can’t believewhat he could carve with a knife. It was well worththe ride.

After a couple of hours, it was time to headhome. Since I was the only one that lives south ofthe city, I left on my own and did back roads allthe way home. A great ending to a great day.

I want to thank Ed for setting up this ride. You can always count on good roads when riding

with Ed even if the weather doesn’t always cooperate. Years ago, we referred to Ed as Ed “Syphoon” because of his ability find terribleweather as well as great roads. Hopefully he will continue to do without the bad weather as he has done recently. But, as I always say, if youdon’t ride in bad weather in Pennsylvania, you probably will not get to ride much.

SEAN

Thanks to Kevin Hard and Ed Syphan for the pictures. Ed’s e-note with his said, “These are the pix I got. The one is with Jim, the docent that gave us thetour. He’s been giving them for for forty years! And some of us at lunch. The ride over was actually pleasant enough, considering it was Ohio.”

ERR RALLY IDEASby Diane Pears

Hi Guys,We had a good time, albeit very cool and damp, at the 14th ERR (European Riders Rally) in Burkesville, KY. They’re well organizedand really give a lot for the money at their rally, including free T shirts and pins, 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner, two nights live music, asmany free camping nights as you want, free RV spots, restaurants & stores in walking distance and two motel rooms rented in walkingdistance just for rally goers to use the showers (besides the ones right at the park), lots of door prizes, very nice engraved awards for allcategories, guided rides & seminars — all for $45 pre-registration and $55 at the door. Day pass was $25. They provided no discount forthose staying in motels.

I have “Building Envy” though. They have 2 perfectly positioned enclosed buildings and one huge open paved picnic shelter all besideeach other at the entrance. They have amazing community support from the visitors bureau, mayor and merchants as well as local BMWdealer who donates and serves the whole free BBQ lunch. Local churches cook and bring the free breakfast Sun. morning with a brief talk, couple songs and gave out free DVD’s (something about the Beatles, but we didn’t get one). The community gives them $4,000 every yeartoward the rally. Afterwards, they donate it back to a charity or non-profit of the town’s choosing. Some restaurants stay open extra hours. One year the mayor told employees to empty out the basement of the courthouse so people could camp inside if they wanted, since theweather forcast was bad!

I got some good ideas from them and other clubs. Their pre-registration online really helped. I propose we do the same — get a pagegoing for it thru June & July with a $5 discount incentive. Also could pre-order shirts with specific sizes and options like long sleeve, pocketand hoodie. Here is an example of a club doing it. I don’t propose different color choices, just styles. Their choice is paid for on the rallypre-reg form page. http://beartoothbeemers.org/t-shirt-orders/

“GREAT SOUL”...When Gandhi was studying law at the University College of London, there was a professor, whose last name was Peters, who felt animositytoward Gandhi, and because Gandhi never conceded to him in any disagreement, their “arguments” were very common.

One day, Mr Peters was having lunch at the dining room of the University and Gandhi came along with his tray and sat next to him.Theprofessor, in his arrogance, said, “Mr Gandhi: you do not understand...a pig and a bird do not sit together to eat,” to which Gandhi replied,“You do not worry professor, I’ll fly away,” and he went and sat at another table.

Mr Peters, enraged, decided to take revenge on Gandhi on the next test, but Gandhi responded brilliantly to all questions. Then, Mr. Peters asked him the following question, “Mr Gandhi, if you are walking down the street and find a package, and within it

there is a bag of wisdom and another bag with a lot of money; which one will you take?”Without hesitating, Gandhi responded, “the one with the money, of course . “Mr Peters, smiling, said, “I, in your place, would have taken the wisdom, don’t you think?”“Each one takes what one doesn’t have”, responded Gandhi indifferently.Mr Peters, already hysterical, wrote on the exam sheet the word “idiot” and gave it to Gandhi. Gandhi took the exam sheet and sat down.

A few minutes later, Gandhi went to the professor and said, “Mr Peters, you signed the sheet but you did not give me the grade.”
