When paddling out to or within a break, it's your responsibility to stay out of the way of riders on waves. This has its roots in the same thinking behind "don't drop in" - once a rider has selected and caught a wave, all other surfers should do their best not to interfere with his or her enjoyment of the wave. It's also extremely practical. Let's face it: Few moves make less sense than paddling close to, or directly into, the breaking line of waves on the way to the takeoff zone. For one thing, natural waterflow through the lineup will make the trip a lot easier if you paddle clear and in open water. For another, not all surfers in the water will have the skills or inclination to avoid your prone board and body floating up into their paths. Therefore, always paddle out wide of the break, making sure you're not interfering with your fellow surfers' waves. If you find yourself caught inside the whitewater line, don't cut across riders' tracks in a frantic attempt to reach the shoulder; maintain your position, pushing through the whitewater until the set passes, then go wide again into open water as quickly as possible. Paddling into the path of a surfer in the tube in order to save yourself a duckdive is extremely bad etiquette. Never block a fellow surfer's path into a wave by paddling beneath his or her entry line. Doing so - whether or not you believe the surfer is capable of catching the wave - is a gross breach of etiquette, and if the surfer does in fact take off, you will be exposed to potential injury, or at the very least a wipeout for which you will receive little sympathy. The Blood Drive Results Are In...The results from the blood drive held on Saturday May 7th at Hawaiian South Shore are (drumroll)...22 pints collected, 66 potential lives saved! There were 6 first time donors and 10 walk-in donors! Below is an Email from Blood Bank: “We can’t thank you and everyone at the store enough for helping with the blood drive this weekend. Thank you for doing all that you did to get the word out and to encourage folks to come to the drive. Please thank the folks from Rainbow for staying all morning and serving chili and rice to the donors. You gave the new donors a great first drive experience and hopefully they will come back to donate again when called in the future. 66 potential lives saved by the great donors that came out on Saturday!!! Yeah! I think that it is just amazing that donors come out willingly to help others and their one small donation of a pint of blood means a lifetime to the recipient and their friends and families. Thanks for coordinating the efforts to make this event a success. Recipients could be using some of the donations as soon as today.”

I caught the surfing bug in the 80’s as a skinny young kid. My mom would take me to the beach as a grom and once that stoke hit I surfed pretty much every day all day. I grew up surfing California’s point breaks in northern L.A. County, Ventura and Santa Barbara. After high school I spent some years on the road traveling;

surfing all over Australia, South Africa, Hawaii and Mexico. Shaping grew out of my love for surfing. No matter where I happened to be, when the swell dropped off I would manage to find myself at all the back woods shaping rooms hanging out and learning all about boards and what makes ‘em tick. I shaped my first boards in a shed in my grandpa’s backyard in 1991 and shortly after, got my first job finishing off pre-shapes for McCrystal Surfboards in Oxnard, CA. I started my own label on the side in ’92, shaping boards for friends, people I surfed with and friends of friends. I was offered a job shaping full-time in San Clemente with Lost Surfboards in ’94 where I would get my own shaping room and have the freedom to hand shape as many boards as I want and get to keep my label on the side…oh boy! I thought, what could be better than that….so I packed up and moved. Working on different design ideas with Matt Biolos and shaping boards for various tours and team riders helped to hone my design and hand shaping skills… and was a lot of fun! After awhile my heart longed for the open country and long points of Ventura, and the vision of a state-of-the-art board operation there. I opened the doors of the factory in 2000 and have been dedicated to building boards that move ever forward with the changing face of performance surfing; boards built with the best quality in mind, and always looking for fresh, new, innovative ideas in materials and design. God has blessed me with a supportive wife that works alongside me and a fine crew that has the same level of care and desire to put out the best boards we are capable of.

DA MONSTAI’ve created a Monsta… This is the most popular and widely ordered board I have been making over the last three years….it has become most surfers’ “normal everyday board for all conditions”. The only complaint has become, “I don’t ride any of my other boards anymore!” This new life form is the high performance great grandchild of the Lil’ Rascal….it has morphed, grown a bit sleeker, but has stayed true to it’s roots of blistering speed through

its heritage of a shorter, wider, stalkier persona. Where this offspring has matured and pushed past it’s predecessors is in the area of versatility and in-the-pocket mobility. The Monsta keeps the speed constant….you don’t have to rely so much on the wave dictating where you’ll derive your speed from….the board just goes, yet has the hold of a normal good waves shortboard when you bare some teeth into your turns. Ride Da Monsta 3-4” shorter and 1/2” wider than your standard good waves shortboard.

The Super-Typhoon is my latest, high performance shortboard design developed specifically with good waves in mind - the dream days. A lot of rocker throughout with a bit of flip off the tail for going beyond vert, upside down, fins out and backwards. It features a domier deck for increased paddling to get into waves early; and lower, harder edged rails to bite into the wave face and redirect quicker through maneuvers.

The Super-Typhoon will hold a rail turn in the most classic sense throwing buckets, yet soar high and controlled while the fins fly. For good waves and advanced surfers.

After racking up 10 years of production hand-shaping experience, Todd Proctor became one of the earliest

adopters of the CAD Digital Surfboard Design system. Proctor keeps a huge database of all the boards he’s ever hand-shaped, and the system allows him to mill every aspect of the design to near perfection. With a little hand finishing, he can exactly replicate a magic board, scale a model to fit a particular surfer’s requirements, or fine-tune a proven design for even more performance. The production of his boards is also completely in-house, meaning that everything from the start to finish in making the boards is done within his factory. This insures the very best quality, best technology, and best customer service every step along the way. And unlike many shaping rooms, Proctor’s factory is impeccably clean, from the showroom all the way back to the airbrush room. The factory boasts a special filtering system that filters all the harmful vapors and brings in fresh air into the workplace. He’s just as meticulous with the business aspect of his shaping career as he is with the design.

Rascal II – Offspring of the original Lil’ Rascal - added aslight bit more curve in the last 12 inches of the noserocker so it rails nice and tight in little nook and crannypockets. I put in a concave deck. It feels like you’re riding a skateboard and responds super quick edge-to-edge. The caved deck also gives you this insane feeling like you are riding “in” the

board and “in” the wave…you gotta just try it to understand what I mean. A killer upgrade: four parabolic channels that give extra lift, drive and directional hold. The moontail releases the water being compressed through the channels in a way that keeps the tail crisp and free to break it loose when you want to.
