MAY 2012 Everyone month I like to put something off the wall or something that is not related to surfing in the newsletter. Since the weather is getting nice and you will be surfing more often (hopefully) and attending barbecues I wanted to share an article I saw online about making your own stain remover. According to the person that wrote it said it actually works better than the real “Shout” stain remover. Check it out and let me know if you use the formula. I know when I was kid my mother used to make all kinds of homemade detergents and stain removers to save money. Better Than The Real Thing! I was actually inspired to DO this update after my 16 year old presented me with this shirt to wash last week. He said it had been sitting in the bottom of his dirty clothes basket for awhile. (I don’t think I even want to know what HIS version of “awhile” is!) All you “professional” clothes washers out there will know exactly what that is on the front of it. Yep… chocolate. A chocolate stain on a shirt that had been in his hamper for “awhile”. Seemed like the perfect opportunity to show how my homemade “Shout” performs under pressure! First, let’s review the “recipe”: Mix everything together and pour into a spray bottle. I got this one at WalMart for about a buck. (I actually got SEVERAL of them for the array of natural/homemade cleaners I have started using. My inventory continues to expand!) Before you go to use it… If it’s been sitting for awhile… give it a good shake. As you can see in this picture…it does tend to separate a bit. But after a quick shake it’s good to go. To use: spray on stains as you normally would. I usually let mine “soak in” for a few minutes at least. Then launder as usual. In this case, since the chocolate stain posed a bit more of a challenge… I took a few extra seconds (literally, that’s all it took) and rubbed the fabric together where I sprayed and when I was finished was somewhat shocked to see the stain was practically already GONE! It’s still there… But barely visible. My old bottle of “real” Shout never did that! TADA! Here is the “AFTER” shot. Once again…clean and pristine. I think even my son was impressed with this one. I really don’t think he believed I could prevail with this one. HA! That’ll teach him to doubt my laundering powers. So that is my latest adventure in “clotheskeeping” (Martha Stewart knows how to make anything sound more glamorous!) I hope you find it helpful in your “battles” in the laundry room! www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com Homemade Stain Remover (Shout) 2/3 cups Dawn Dishwashing Liquid (I had Palmolive on hand, so that’s what I used) 2/3 cups ammonia 6 Tblsp baking soda 2 cups warm water Learn How To Make Home-Made Shout !

Homemade "Shout" Stain Remover  Everyone  month  I  like  to  put  something  off  the  wall  or  something  that  is  not  related  to  surfing  in  the  newsletter. I  know  when  I

Learn How To Make Home-Made “Shout”!

What does the world’s best surfer Kelly Slater, Legendary MMA Wanderlei Silva, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Master Renzo Gracie and Katja Kortstorm of Cirque du Soleil all have in common? All of them do a type of workout called The DeRose Method.

It’s a discipline that claims to bring you improved stress management, concentration and better sleep, as well as helping you overcome cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure and getting you toned and fit.

Ever heard of The DeRose method? To be honest I’ve never heard of it until recently. I was introduced to the method by one of our customers, Guilherme, and after going online and doing some research I found out that a lot of famous athletes use this training to improve their overall strength, flexibility and energy. Yes, this method of training will give you more energy! Matter of fact, most of people have more energy right after a class. I don’t know about you but I could always use more energy.

This is program of breathing techniques, physical postures, meditation and relaxation developed in the sixties by Brazil-born Luiz DeRose - known as Master DeRose. It is based on ancient techniques, but the method itself arrived for the first time in Hawaii about five years ago.

After reading several articles and talking to Gui, the Hawaii instructor, I am interested in attending some classes. I need to be more limber and have more strength. I noticed if I surf several days in a row my lower right back stiffens up... Yeah, I know I should stretch on my own, but I really don’t know how to do it properly and having some professional advice is the best way. I figured out of all the training methods available, if these world-class athletes decided to do The DeRose Method there must be something to it. Wish me good luck, I will update you with my progress.

BONUSES

I’m sure by now most of you know that Keith, our long time manager, is no longer with us. He’s made the bold move to Taiwan. Usually when I tell people that, their first reaction is TAIWAN?!

Yeah, I know most wouldn’t think if you like to surf you would go to Taiwan but he made the move and I’ve talked to people that have been there and they say the surf is unreal.

I’m hoping I can go around July! Oh, I forgot I didn’t tell you why he went to Taiwan. Well, he is part owner of a Surf Camp and he is loving it! If you are interested in visiting Taiwan for a surf trip just let me know by emailing me at [email protected] and I’ll let Keith know. You know surfing in Taiwan and China is just starting to boom, but the surf spots are pretty much empty. Did you know there was a a big surf contest just recently? It was presented by Quicksilver then after the contest, a well know shortboarder went to Taiwan and shot a surf video. Anyways, Keith is now in Taiwan and having fun, but that’s not the reason why I’m telling you this.

About two months before he left we were lucky to have Byron come aboard. Byron was someone that came highly recommended. You see, he worked at Big City Diner for a long time and one of the guys I surf with (his brother) is one of the owners of Big City Diner. He said I was super lucky to have him. Now it’s been about 8 months and I have to agree! Welcome aboard Byron!

Take Care Keith and Welcome Byron!

Did you know that May 27th is Sunscreen Protection Day? No, I didn’t make it up and yes, there is such a day. For the whole month of May I’m going to hook you UP!!!! Well, let me rephrase that… If you give us some love, THEN I will hook you up.

Let me explain, be the fist 37 people to purchase a Sun Face stick or lotion and use it. Then come back within two weeks and give us your testimonial. After, I will hook you up with a Hawaiian South Shore Gift card for the same amount you spent on Sun Bum... So it’s like getting a Sun Bum FREE!!!

So, this is kind of like a bribe but I know once you try the Sun Bum you will like it. I used the stick and surfed from 1pm to 5:30pm and I tell you what… The thing works!!! So I’m pretty stoked on it and I hope you will be too. That is one of the reasons we are doing this: We want some feedback from you and yes we are going to use it in our next newsletter so you have to let us take a picture of you. If you are shy we can have you hide part of your face behind the Sun Bum Monkey.

Oh, just to let you know, Sun Bum is totally up to standard with the New FDA regulations on what they claim. PLUS they went to the Skin Cancer foundation and went through all of the testing and got a big thumbs up and now they are being recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

I also listed some facts about Sun Bum below. Check it out. OH!!! Before I forget... If you buy the Sun Bum and want to participate in the testimonial, you don’t have to come in. All you have to do is send us an email to [email protected] and don’t forget attach your picture!

Welcome Aboard Byron!Wasup everyone? Byron here. Y’know I’ll always remember the first time I set foot in Hawaiian South Shore, there was so much stuff to look at I was really blown away. Actually, to be really honest, I was even intimidated a little!

I’d never been in a shop like this before! The other “surf” shops I’d gone to in the past (which I won’t name, ha ha), mostly sold boardshorts, tank tops, and sunglasses. But these guys had the stuff I saw in surf mags and websites. All the latest board designs from JS, Lost, etc... it was like a “pro” shop, like the golf shops my dad used to drag me to when I was a kid, only this one was for surfers! At first I didn’t even want to touch anything!

But then I met Keith, Sareesa and Kyle, and I was stoked at how easy it was to talk with them. I got to demo fins, and got help in choosing fin sets from Kyle, I bought a Xanadu Rocket Fish with Sareesa’s help, and Keith helped me find the right shortboard when I was finally ready to transition to shortboarding. I’ve been stoked on this shop for years now, and I’m even more stoked to have the chance to work with everyone at Hawaiian South Shore.

Now I want to help other surfers share that stoke! Help them find boards or fins (or any item they need to get in the water)and stay surfing. That’s what I really love about working at Hawaiian South Shore, we don’t ever judge and we don’t pretend to be anything we’re not. We’re just a group of people who love and respect the ocean waves, and love to surf. So please come down, talk story with us. We’ll learn more about surfing from each other than we can on our own. And you can never have too many friends in the water. Peace!
