It is often said that great leaders are made, not born.

And in the world of business, I, for one, can attest to the fact that great leadership is the cornerstone of any successful company because of the critical role it plays in propelling the organization forward.

In this, the Manufacturer & Business Association’s 106th year of continuous service to the tri-state business community, a visionary and forward-thinking leadership, comprised of our Board of Governors, administration and professional staff, have dedicated themselves to offering new and improved services that will assist you, as employers, in your day-to-day operations and allow you to move your organizations to new heights. It is a mission that we take very seriously, and one in which we don’t just expect, but demand, results.

Over the past year, the Association has enabled many of our more than 4,500 member companies to save in excess of $3 million in energy costs, through our low-cost energy program, the Employers’ Energy Alliance of Pennsylvania, Inc. In addition, through our attorney supported HR/Legal Hotline, we will have saved MBA members more than $110,000 in human resource/legal support in 2011 alone.

As one of the largest employers’ associations of its kind in the United States, we also lobby tirelessly on our members’ behalf at the state and federal levels for pro-business legislation, and annually cater to the needs of more than 25,000 guests, who have attended business meetings and events at our state-of-the-art Conference Center,

where we guarantee premium service at an affordable price.

Likewise, the Association’s discount group health insurance offerings continue to help our members save hundreds of thousands of dollars for their employees’ health-care coverage. And, our regionally recognized pro-fessional development and computer training programs, as well as our nationally acclaimed Blue Ocean Strategy workshops, have enabled more than 15,000 participants to develop the skills and tools they need for success within their industries.

In my experience, as an active member of this organization for more than 30 years and longtime Board member, the Association’s services are just the right resources that have helped many of our businesses thrive and prosper in an ever-changing and competitive business landscape, and, subsequently, have allowed the Association to thrive as well.

It is one of the many reasons that I am so pleased to share with you this year’s Annual Report, the Association’s premier business-to-business publication. On the following pages, this special edition of the Business Magazine features not only this year’s Annual Event speaker Jack Welch and entertainment, The Victory Belles, who will make their appearance before our full capacity crowd of business and community leaders on June 28 at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie, but also the many people who are committed to the leadership of this organization. This issue also highlights our pro-manufacturing position for economic growth, our low-cost energy services, as well as our upcoming charitable

events — specifically, the Let’s Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride with honorary grand marshal, former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge.

Because, as many of you recognize, the Manufacturer & Business Association is an organization that does not sit idly on the sidelines, but takes an active role in our community and advocating on our members’ behalf. Whether it is living our mission as a champion of business or hosting a charitable bike rally that will help build a national memorial for the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Association is a vital part of the region in which we live, play and work.

It’s why I, and the many leaders who contribute to the direction of this great organization, encourage you to make the most of your Association mem-bership and wish you continued success with your businesses now and in the near future.

Sincerely,

John B. Pellegrino Sr., P.E.

John B. Pellegrino Sr., P.E. is chairman of the Manufacturer & Business Association (MBA) Board of Governors and president and CEO of Ridg-U-Rak, Inc., one of the largest pallet rack and storage rack manufacturers in North America, with an annual production capacity of more than 100 million pounds of storage rack. The family owned company, founded in 1942, has two production plants in North East, Pennsylvania, featuring more than 400,000 square feet of production and warehouse space.

"The success, the strength, and the standard of living in America has been achieved only because of the free enterprise system. It has made many people wealthy, but it's also given many, many millions of people the quality of life never before equaled in world history. If we allow government to restrict and eventually socialize the system, our country and our way of life will rapidly decline ... along with our freedom. Protect free enterprise and keep our country strong."

If you want to understand better why so many states — from New York to Wisconsin to California — are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, consider this depressing statistic: Today in America there are nearly twice as many people working for the government (22.5 million) than in all of manufacturing (11.5 million). This is an almost exact reversal of the situation in 1960, when there were 15 million workers in manufacturing and 8.7 million collecting a paycheck from the government.

It gets worse. More Americans work for the government than work in construction, farming, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, mining and utilities combined. We have moved decisively from a nation of makers to a nation of takers. Nearly half of the $2.2 trillion cost of state and local governments is the $1 trillion-a-year tab for pay and benefits of state and local employees. Is it any wonder that so many states and cities cannot pay their bills?

Steve Moore has the details on Rep. Paul Ryan's plan to cut spending.

Every state in America today except for two — Indiana and Wisconsin — has more government workers on the payroll than people manufacturing industrial goods. Consider California, which has the highest budget deficit in the history of the states. The not-so Golden State now has an incredible 2.4 million government employees — twice as many as people at work in manufacturing. New Jersey has just under two-and-a-half as many

government employees as manufacturers. Florida's ratio is more than 3 to 1. So is New York's.

Even Michigan, at one time the auto capital of the world, and Pennsylvania, once the steel capital, have more government bureaucrats than people making things. The leaders in government hiring are Wyoming and New Mexico, which have hired more than six government workers for every manufacturing worker.

Now it is certainly true that many states have not typically been home to traditional manufacturing operations. Iowa and Nebraska are farm states, for example. But in those states, there are at least five times more government workers than farmers. West Virginia is the mining capital of the world, yet it has at least three times more government workers than miners. New York is the financial capital of the world — at least for now. That sector employs roughly 670,000 New Yorkers. That's less than half of the state's 1.48 million government employees.

Don't expect a reversal of this trend anytime soon. Surveys of college graduates are finding that more and more of our top minds want to work for the government. Why? Because in recent years only government agencies have been hiring, and because the offer of near lifetime security is highly valued in these times of economic turbulence. When 23-year-olds aren't willing to take career risks, we have a real problem on our hands. Sadly,

We've Become a Nation of Takers, Not MakersMore Americans work for the government than in manufacturing, farming, fishing, forestry, mining and utilities combined.

By STEPHEN MOORE

10 < www.mbausa.org < June 2011

Page 15: June 2011 Business Magazine

we could end up with a generation of Americans who want to work at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The employment trends described here are explained in part by hugely beneficial productivity improvements in such traditional industries as farming, manufacturing, financial services and telecommunications. These produce far more output per worker than in the past. The typical farmer, for example, is today at least three times more productive than in 1950.

Where are the productivity gains in government? Consider a core function of state and local governments: schools. Over the period 1970-2005, school spending per pupil, adjusted for inflation, doubled, while standardized achievement test scores were flat. Over roughly that same time period, public-school employment doubled per student, according to a study by researchers at the University of Washington. That is what economists call negative productivity.

But education is an industry where we measure per-formance backwards: We gauge school performance not by outputs, but by inputs. If quality falls, we say we didn't pay teachers enough or we need smaller class sizes or newer schools. If education had undergone the same productivity revolution that manufacturing has, we would have half as many educators, smaller school budgets, and higher graduation rates and test scores.

The same is true of almost all other government services. Mass transit spends more and more every year and

yet a much smaller share of Americans use trains and buses today than in past decades. One way that private companies spur productivity is by firing underperforming employees and rewarding excellence. In government employment, tenure for teachers and near lifetime employment for other civil servants shields workers from this basic system of reward and punishment. It is a system that breeds mediocrity, which is what we've gotten.

Most reasonable steps to restrain public-sector employ-ment costs are smothered by the unions. Study after study has shown that states and cities could shave 20% to 40% off the cost of many services — fire fighting, public transportation, garbage collection, administrative functions, even prison operations — through competitive contracting to private providers. But unions have blocked many of those efforts. Public employees maintain that they are underpaid relative to equally qualified private-sector workers, yet they are deathly afraid of competitive bidding for government services.

President Obama says we have to retool our economy to "win the future." The only way to do that is to grow the econ-omy that makes things, not the sector that takes things.

“PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE”

AN OPEN LETTER TO JACK WELCH Dear Jack,

Though we’ve never met before, and you’d have no way of knowing this, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say “thank you” for having had such an impact on my life, and the life of my company.

Logistics Plus began as a 3 person Bullet Train project/company way back in 1996 here at GE Transportation. We were asked by Dave Calhoun’s team (especially guys like Jack Fish and Jim Alvino) to help GE manage your inbound transportation. At Boca the following February, you recognized us as one of your corporate “Best Practices”. Thank you.

Later that year, Jim and Bill Rogers and their team took us to Mexico with them to help manage your new sourcing initiative there. Then Ed Orzetti took us around the world as your sourcing efforts took GE to Eastern Europe, Russia, India, China and Indonesia.

We worked with John Rice’s team to define and control the net landed costs of these global products you were bringing in to build a record breaking 900+ locomotives and to help make GE Transportation one of the most profitable units of your business.

We have since had the pleasure of working with the leadership teams of John Krenicki, Charlene Begley, John Dineen and now with Lorenzo Simonelli—all terrific leaders we have had the honor of serving. So, as you can see, GE has been a big part of our life/part of our corporate DNA.

Now, though we have grown a bit, we still try to embody the entrepreneurial spirit I’ve always derived from your books, which I have read time and again (and bought for anyone in my company who wanted to read them as well).

And one last thing—I was honored to have been named Western Pa’s Entrepreneur of the Year a few years back and had the pleasure of seeing you speak at their annual event in Palm Springs in Nov. 2008. As we all remember, that was a dark and treacherous time, and I (like many of us) was scared and unsure.

I will never forget the talk you gave (I keep the notes I took at the time on my desk to this day) and how you said, “Times are gonna be tough. They’re gonna be even tougher than you think. But you have two options: Get under the bed and suck your thumb. Or get out there and figure this out and continue moving forward/navigate/get through it”. I credit THAT TALK with getting my mind right, of giving me the direction I needed. Although 2009 and 2010 were tough for sure, we not only survived, we got leaner, meaner, better and we stayed strong and positive. Thank you again.

You made a difference in my life, and in the life of my company and all the people with whom and for I have the great pleasure of working every day. Thank you,

Jim Berlin, CEO

Imagine the technology that would make it possible to move a ton of freight 480 miles on a single gallon of fuel. Now picture a locomotive control system that would calculate the exact amount of power and braking needed to reduce fuel usage even further, and a companion system that increases a rail network’s capacity, reliability and speed. These tools already exist — and they’re just a few of the ways GE Transportation is using technology leadership and product innovation to help solve the toughest transportation challenges. Between 2010 and 2011 GE will have invested more than $600 million in transportation research and develop-ment. On the horizon are locomotives that meet more stringent emission standards and further improve energy efficiency, models for higher-speed passenger rail, and a revolutionary battery that offers a reliable, long-lasting back-up power source that will ultimately pave the way for hybrid applications within the rail, mining and marine industries. These technologies will be used not just in the United States but across the globe, in places from Brazil to the United Kingdom, China, Kazakhstan and South Africa. With customers worldwide, GE Transportation’s global sales are of increasing importance to the company’s revenues and are projected to climb as global growth accelerates. And while locomotives remain the core of the business, technologies for the mining, marine, signaling, stationary power and energy storage industries remain an important part of the company’s strategy to serve customers around the world in-country. The focus is global. In order to better serve customers and increase its com-petitiveness, the company continues to expand its operational footprint in both the United States and in growth markets around the world. As GE Transportation invests in technology to remain competitive, the

company also is making long-term investments in the competitiveness of the Erie region.

• A five-year, $15-million grant to the Erie School District from the GE Foundation’s Developing Futures program is strengthen-ing math and science education, while an additional $4-million grant made to the GO College program is helping local high school students pursue higher education.

• GE Foundation grants totaling $500,000 are enabling Commu-nity Health Net to provide health care for needy families.

• 2010 charitable contributions totaling $500,000 are supporting the work of numerous local nonprofits.

Beyond financial support, GE volunteers provide knowledge, expertise, and hands-on help to local organizations. GE employees give thousands of hours to advance pro-grams such as FIRST Robotics, Junior Achievement, Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, and many oth-ers. Together, GE and its employees are working to help the region solve its toughest challenges.

As GE Transportation continues to expand into global markets, the ability to react quickly to customer needs becomes increasingly important. Lean manufactur-ing and productivity gains have made it possible to build a locomotive in less than half the time it took five years ago.

GE’s electric drive systems power mining vehicles in more than 35 countries across the globe. The company invented electric drive systems for mining trucks in 1963 and has led the industry ever since.

GE’s Evolution® Series Locomotive is the most technologically advanced diesel-electric heavy-haul locomotive in the world. More than 4,100 are in operation in a dozen countries worldwide. A product of ecomaginationSM, the Evolution Series uses less fuel while reducing emissions by approximately 40 percent compared to previous models.

On Feb. 1, 2011, UPMC and Hamot Medical Center transformed health care in our community by finalizing their affiliation and establishing a new entity: UPMC Hamot.

According to administrators, this affiliation will secure the organization’s future and enable the facility to intro- duce advanced medical services and subspecialties, new residency programs and research opportunities, and sophisticated technology.

“UPMC Hamot is building upon its strengths to stimulate economic growth, provide more effective and efficient patient care, and create an even brighter vision of health care for this community and region,” explains John Malone, UPMC Hamot president and CEO. “As Erie’s health-care leader, we continue to make decisions that will grow and advance our services during a period of dramatic change within the health-care industry.”

A More Advanced, Specialized Health SystemAs a result of UPMC's $300-million investment and dedication of resources, UPMC Hamot now has a tremendous opportunity to become a more advanced, specialized health-care system.

UPMC is committed to helping the community attract the best specialists to enhance its capabilities as the Erie region’s premier tertiary care center.

Recently, the health system announced the recruitment of two renowned and specialized neurosurgeons to the UPMC Hamot medical staff. Their expertise in minimally invasive spine procedures and cranial/facial nerve disorders bolsters its superior quality neurosurgical program already in place.

“Now,” says Malone, “more local neurosurgery patients can remain in Erie for their care while patients from outside the region will travel here for the specialized services UPMC Hamot offers.”

With the opening of the UPMC Hamot Women's Hospital this year, the health system has begun delivering on its promise to establish new and sophisticated programs that meet the varying health-care needs of women in Erie and our surrounding communities. The organization also has expanded the scope of specialized services in areas such as treatments for infertility, high-risk pregnancy, ovarian cancer, and other female diseases. Three expert physician specialists from UPMC now travel to Erie to see patients on a regular basis.

Anticipated in the near future at UPMC Hamot are new services within internal medicine and pediatrics, as well as advancements

in cardiac, orthopaedics, trauma, and outpatient services.

A Regional Partner and Community StewardAs UPMC Hamot continues to cultivate relationships with regional hospitals that include Kane Community Hospital, Elk Regional Health Center, Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, and Warren General, more patients can access high-quality treatment pathways and medical services. UPMC Hamot also is working closely with its northwestern Pennsylvania partners, UPMC Horizon and UPMC Northwest, to develop avenues for new patient referrals to Erie.

“As a dedicated community steward, UPMC Hamot is looking forward to developing new ways to improve the health and economic vitality of the Erie region,” notes Malone. “In addition, we believe that UPMC Hamot's introduction of new patients, their families, new physicians and services to Erie will stimulate needed economic growth within the community.”

Making important decisions for Erie has always been a part of Hamot's history and will remain the driving force for the future of UPMC Hamot. As the health system moves forward, through ongoing economic pressures, the UPMC Hamot Board of Directors and leadership say they will continue to work diligently to assure that the organization continues to be a strong and viable community and regional health-care provider and top employer for years to come.

Even as UPMC Hamot experiences change, its commitments to patients, quality care, and community remain the same.

As Americans, we hold dear the phrase, “We will never forget.” As governor of Pennsylvania during that time, what is your memory of that fateful day, September 11, 2001?Actually, it was a beautiful day in northwestern Pennsylvania. I began the day in Erie and started with a visit to my mother who happened to be in the hospital at the time. I returned home and was advised by the Pennsylvania State Police that a commercial airliner had struck the first building and, by the time I got inside to talk to my chief of staff and try to learn more information, I believe the second building was struck. I was on the phone, making arrangements to come back to Harrisburg because there was so much uncertainty at the time as to what was going on, but it was pretty clear that America was under some form of attack. Then, while watching NBC News, I remember reporter Jim Miklaszewski heard an explosion on the other side of the Pentagon, which was the third plane. Next, the fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania.

After several hours of waiting to get clearance, I was in a state police helicopter on my way back to Harrisburg. I went immediately to our emergency operations center that then-Lieutenant Governor Mark Schweiker had up and running, and we had everybody there. From that point on, I got into an old Army Reserve Chinook helicopter and flew to Shanksville.

What was going through your mind at that time?I think, like a lot of Americans, the horror and audacity associated with turning commercial airplanes into missiles was just almost beyond belief. I think there was a great deal of shock as to how anyone could be so cruel, so evil, so cavalier as to kill so many innocent people, and also the whole range of emotions of sorrow in the midst of the tragedy — empathy for the people involved, anger, and also a feeling of retribution or revenge. All those human emotions that one could possibly experience were pretty raw at the time, and I suspect that my emotions reflected that of most Americans.

Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, you became the first secretary of Homeland Security for the United States. What are your thoughts on this post and its role in keeping our nation safe?First, I was grateful that the president (George W. Bush) gave me an opportunity to serve him because, like most Americans right after 9/11, in their hearts and in their minds, we were all saying, “What can I do to help?” The president gave me a job, and although it was unknown territory, unchartered waters, we knew we would be working our way through that together.

I also think people need to understand that the department is just one of several agencies within the government that has responsibility, in conjunction with other agencies from the military and the intelligence community on down, to keep America safe and secure. It has played that role today well, not as effectively as we would all like because there are still challenges associated with restructuring the organization and getting timely intelligence from other agencies, but I think it has done a fairly effective job. There is always room for improvement.

What your readers need to know is that we always viewed Homeland Security as being part >

of the defensive apparatus — the military plays offense, the FBI plays offense, but based on information shared with us, it would be our responsibility to defend, basically to set up a more defensive posture than an offensive posture in terms of the security protocol.

Flash forward to today. Please tell us why you decided to get involved in the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign.I just closed my eyes prior to answering this question. I remember looking at the field in Shanksville as we descended for my press conference and ascended when I went back to Harrisburg. There is no debris field; there is nothing close to what I anticipated. There was just a large smoldering hole in the ground. It is a pretty dramatic view even today. So as governor, having both the responsibility and the opportunity to get there as soon as I possibly could, when the families asked me to participate, it was very easy for me to say, “yes.” It was just something that I had to do.

What is the goal of the Campaign? The goal is about $60 million, and we are about three-quarters of the way there; we have about $15 million to go. Obviously, the goal is to create a memorial that really recognizes and celebrates the heroism and the sacrifices of the 40 passengers and crew, and to give some meaning and interpretation to the visitors as to actually what transpired there. I think that is very important. It is the only hijacked plane that did not reach its intended target because of the intervention of the passengers and crew, and without a memorial I fear that we are going to forget that simple fact.

The Let’s Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride is an offshoot of the 2011 Roar on the Shore® rally, set for July 14, 15 and 16 in downtown Erie, which is now recognized as one of the fastest-growing free motorcycle rallies in the United States. How important are fundraising efforts, such as the Let’s Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride, to your cause?First of all, to everyone associated with this effort, how grateful we are that they are willing to be part of this national effort to build a memorial. This may be one of the most unique fundraising initiatives we have ever been associated with. It is not only the dollars that they will raise but the fact that there will be even greater awareness because you have nine different groups of 40 cyclists coming from several points on the Pennsylvania-Virginia map, convening in Shanksville on September 11. People still pause, including myself, when a group of motorcyclists come by in their caravans. But this is not just one caravan,

it is nine, and this is not just a pleasure ride, this is a ride with a purpose. It is a pretty meaningful purpose. It is a historic process, and I think the magnitude of it should be recognized. I certainly do.

You were recently named honorary grand marshal of the Let’s Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride, which will be held during the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. What are your thoughts on being chosen for this special honor?I am delighted to be asked because when you think of the events of that day, the governor from Erie was in Erie on the day that it happened; this is an Erie initiative led by friends from Erie, Pennsylvania, it was pretty easy to say, “yes.”

What message would you like to share with the bikers and the communities that are supporting the Let’s Roll ride this year?I want all the organizers of Roar on the Shore® and the Let’s Roll ride to know how grateful I am but also how grateful the family members of the passengers and crew are. This is an extraordinarily generous offer involving several hundred people who are giving us their time. This is a weekend event to raise money and to enhance and increase awareness.

I also want to leave them with one little tidbit that may make them feel better than they already do about this initiative. We have already seen one school textbook describing Flight 93 simply as, “and a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania.” No meaning, no interpretation, no mention of the sacrifice of the passengers and crew. No mention that we all know it was a fourth plane heading to Washington to bring its evil, horror and terror to some destination in the nation’s capital. I would like to find out who wrote that bloody thing “and a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania.”

Well, what the Roar on the Shore® and Let’s Roll ride organizers are doing is saying, “No, it was so much more than that.” They understand it; they want the communities that they originate from to understand it, and so their contribution to give meaning to the sacrifice and heroism and, frankly, to ground our interpretation in America as to what happened that day is a very significant contribution to our effort.

With a reputation for highest quality craftsmanship, unparalleled delivery and prompt responsiveness, Howard Indus-tries is considered to be the “Cadillac” of the sign industry.Howard Industries currently occupies a 50,000-square-foot, technologically advanced office/production facility in the Sterrettania Business Park in McKean Township. Here, the 48-plus person staff designs and manufactures both standard and custom-designed modular signage systems, including a variety of extruded-aluminum signs and DeSign Stone eps monument signs with thousands of design configurations. Never a company to rest on its laurels, Howard Industries leads the way in adopting new strate-gies and cutting-edge sign fabricating technologies. Its manufacturing process is under a continuous-improvement man-date, and the company is always looking to new markets. A Glimpse at Recent Events in a Growing Legacy:• With its beginnings dating back to

the 1920s, Howard Industries has a company history rich in growth, change and success. Under CEO Gary Sch-neider and President Patrick Sutton, the company continues to carve out an aggressive forward-thinking business plan as a manufacturer and innovative sign industry leader.

• In 2005, Howard Industries developed the PRIME Sign Program to meet the needs of institutional and corporate clients that require complete sign proj-ect management. Project managers and design personnel are teamed to provide industry leading campus mas-ter planning, sign audits, site surveys, architectural signage solutions, permit acquisition, and installation manage-ment. Area clients benefiting from these services include: Penn State University, Shippensburg University, Shepherd University, Gannon Uni-versity, Mercyhurst College, Edinboro University, Hamot Medical Center and satellite facilities, Saint Vincent Health System and satellite facilities, LECOM Wellness and Millcreek Com-munity Hospital, Geisinger Healthcare Facilities, and the First National Bank corporate headquarters and branches, to name a few.

• In late 2007, the company’s business plan recognized the need to further streamline production and offer more focused service to three distinctive cus-tomer groups. From Howard Industries Architectural Signage, two additional divisions were created: DeSign Stone

Signs focusing on the manufacture and the further development of EPS Monu-ment Signs; and iSIGNS Inc., which exclusively markets and provides LED illuminated Traffic Control Signs to an increasing variety of target industries.

• In 2007 and again in 2008, Howard Industries was honored as an Inc. 5000 company. This recognition was a tribute to the company’s growth during both years.

• In 2008, the company earned a Penn-sylvania Department of General Services COSTARS Contract for signage. Participation in this program allows state entities, municipalities and townships to purchase identifica-tion and wayfinding signage under one contract without time-intensive research and bid procedures. Area clients benefiting from these services include: Penn State University (13 satellite campuses in 2009), Ship-pensburg University, Slippery Rock University, Edinboro University, Geis-inger Healthcare Facilities, and Salus University.

• In late 2009, Howard Industries introduced the HID Interior Signage System. Seeing a need for a quickly available, versatile system for interior facility identification, wayfinding and information, the experts in exterior signage applied like-minded design and production concepts to creating a cost-effective interior sign system. The new HID interior system offers func-tional versatility, contemporary modular appeal, stylish design accents, user-changeable message inserts, and easy to install mounting options … all at a price everyone can appreciate!

• In the autumn of 2010, the company introduced Perma-Banner, a unique new technology for creating and hang-ing eye-catching vertical street pole, light pole and lamp post banners for entryways, parking lots and campus grounds. A revolutionary new concept, Perma-Banners can be of any shape and feature the sign industry’s only “No Fly Away” vertical mounting bracket. They outperform and outlast fabric banners and eliminate lost banners, electrical hazards and utility damages.

Jack Welch — world-renowned businessman, chemical engineer, author and management expert — is widely regarded as one of the most respected and greatest CEOs in America today. During his more than 40 years at General Electric, he rose quickly through the ranks to become the company’s youngest vice president and later its youngest CEO and chairman. Throughout his tenure at GE, he gained a reputation as one of the toughest bosses for his blunt and hard-hitting management tactics. But, it was his visionary leadership style that allowed him to steer the company into international markets at a scale never seen before. On June 28, 2011, Welch will serve as keynote speaker at the Manufacturer & Business Association’s 106th Annual Event in Erie to speak frankly and candidly about his experiences as the head of one of the most valuable and powerful companies in the world.

Warren Buffett. Bill Gates. Steve Jobs. Jack Welch. Each has been hailed as one of greatest business minds and innovators in a generation. Warren Buffett for his investment strategies. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs for their innovative technology. And, Jack Welch, of course, for his transformational management style.

But what makes a great leader truly great?

According to Welch, former chairman and CEO of General Electric, in an interview in the Harvard Business Review, “Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.

Above all else, though, good leaders are open. They go up, down, and around their organization to reach people. They don’t stick to the established channels. They’re informal. They’re straight with people. They make a religion out of being accessible. They never get bored telling their story.”1

Welch’s story, for one, is compelling to nearly every entrepreneur, executive or anyone interested in climbing the corporate ladder. Here is a man who led GE to record growth, profitability and market capitalization from 1981 to 2001 — and who did it strategically and succinctly. He communicated his vision effectively, by focusing on streamlining operations, acquiring new businesses, and seizing the opportunity to make every business under GE the best in its industry.

“Leadership is about results, not experience, not education, or any of the other things that everyone claims is leadership,” Welch has said. “It's about being able to consistently deliver results, being able to recover from falling off that horse, and getting right back on ...”2

The Early Lessons of WinningThe details of Welch’s upbringing are typical of most any other middle-class American. He was born John Francis “Jack” Welch Jr. to John, a Boston & Maine Railroad conductor, and Grace, a homemaker, in 1935 in Peabody, Massachusetts, and was raised in Salem where he developed not only his passion for sports — and his lifelong devotion to the Red Sox — but the realities of winning and losing. It was during these formidable years that his mother taught him the importance of how to communicate candidly, to face reality and control his own destiny — lessons he frequently relied on throughout his career.

For example, in his New York Times best-selling autobiography, Jack: Straight from the Gut, Welch describes a moment when his team had lost its seventh straight game and out of his frustration he threw his hockey stick across the arena, as he headed back to his locker room. His mother marched up to him after the game, shouting, “If you don’t know how to lose, you’ll never know how to win. If you don’t know this, you shouldn’t be playing.”3

What she said, “never left me,” wrote Welch. “… If I have any leadership style, a way of getting the best out of people, I owe it to her … And many of my basic management beliefs — things like competing hard to win, facing reality, motivating people by alternately hugging and kicking them, setting

stretch goals, and relentlessly following up on people to make sure things get done — can be traced to her as well.”4

Welch also took his mother’s advice when it came to self-confidence and its role in getting ahead.

“Confidence gives you courage and extends your reach,” Welch has said. “It lets you take greater risks and achieve far more than you ever thought possible. Building self-confidence in others is a huge part of leadership. It comes from providing opportunities and challenges for people to do things they never imagined they could do — rewarding them after each success in every way possible.”5

Leverage and Seizing Opportunity Welch himself reaped the rewards of studying hard and excel-ling in his academic pursuits. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts and master’s degree and doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois. He then returned to Massachusetts as a junior chemical engineer with GE developing new plastics at the company’s Pittsfield, Massachusetts facility.

Ironically, his first job at the company was also almost his last.

By the end of his first year, Welch was reportedly awarded a standard $1,000 raise — an amount given to employees who excelled or floundered, regardless of performance. Displeased with the bureaucracy he saw — and ultimately would do away with — he decided to look for another job, accepting a position with International Minerals & Chemicals outside Chicago. Instead, Welch was convinced to stay on by a young GE executive named Reuben Gutoff, who, according to Jack Welch Speaks: Wisdom from the World’s >

“My main job was developing talent. I was a gardener providing water and other nourishment to our top 750 people. Of

course, I had to pull out some weeds, too.”

— Jack Welch

Greatest Business Leader author Janet Lowe, “lured him back with more responsibility and a higher salary.”6

It likely was the best decision he ever made.

By 1968, Welch was running General Electric's entire plastics business, then a more than $26-million operation, helping to turn it into a billion-dollar business. Through the early 1970s, he began his steady ascent into increasingly challenging positions and moved swiftly up the corporate ladder, being named vice president of GE in 1972.

“Over the next thirteen years at GE, I got four promotions. Each one felt terrific,” Welch noted in Winning. “I liked having more responsibility, making bigger deals, building bigger plants, and managing more people. It was really only in 1973 that it dawned on me that I had a shot at the company’s top job — and that I wanted it too. In an act of complete cockiness, I put that down on my performance evaluation under the question about career goals.

Eight years later, I got my wish.”7

Welch moved up the ranks to become senior vice president in 1977 and vice chairman in 1979. At age 45, Welch became GE's youngest chairman and CEO in 1981, succeeding Reginald H. Jones. Welch has said he didn’t come into the role with a master plan, but his passion for business, directness and subsequent management techniques as a “tough-love capitalist” made him the most influential CEO of his era.

“In the 1970s and 1980s, big business had too many layers …” he wrote in Jack: Straight from the Gut. “… In those days, I was throwing hand grenades, trying to blow up traditions and rituals that I felt held us back.”8

Transformational StrategiesAccording to sources, the first step in realizing that vision was dismantling much of the bureaucracy Welch had seen. He tore down much of the excesses of the old corporate structure. In fact, he is widely known for his nickname "Neutron Jack," a reference to the neutron bomb, for eliminating employees while leaving the buildings intact. And his premise of differentiation sent shockwaves through conventional management techniques.

“One of the main misunderstandings about differentiation is that is only about people,” Welch stated in his best-selling book Winning. “That’s to miss half of it. Differentiation is a way to manage people and businesses.”9

Under Welch, GE cut businesses in which the company could not dominate the market in first or second positions. Next, he had managers cut the bottom 10 percent of GE employees, while he cut the bottom 10 percent of management.

Differentiation among people is “a process that requires managers to assess their employees and separate them into three categories in terms of performance: top 20 percent, middle 70, and bottom 10,” Welch explained in Winning. “Then — and this is key — it requires managers to act on that distinction….

“The top 20 percent of employees are showered with bonuses, stock options, praise, love, training and a variety of rewards to their pocketbooks and souls. There can be no mistaking the stars at a company that differentiates."

But “managing the middle 70 percent is not about keeping people out of the bottom 10. It is not about saving poor performers…. Rather, differentiation is about managers looking at the middle 70, identifying people with the potential to move up, and cultivating them.”10

As for the bottom 10 percent, Welch has said, “they have to go.”

“One of the best things about differentiation is that people in the bottom 10 percent of the organizations very often go on to successful careers at companies and pursuits where they truly belong and where they can excel.”11

Welch also became equally well known for his Work-Out initiatives where managers worked with their staff to determine strategies and tactics to improve the business — an idea based on candor, where everyone at every level in the company has a voice to express their ideas.

“Whether it was a refrigeration plant in Louisville, Kentucky, where employees debated faster and better paint systems, or a jet engine plant in Rutland, Vermont, where employees had recommendations on how to cut cycle time in blade manufacturing, or a credit card processing facility in Cin-cinnati, where employees had ideas about billing efficiency, Work-Outs led to an explosion in productivity,” noted Welch. “They brought every brain into the game.”12

But it was his embrace of Six Sigma in the 1990s, a quality-centric approach to business and people, which truly transformed the company in terms of competitiveness. Adopted from Motorola, the program was developed to maximize the efficiency of manufacturing processes through the minimization of production of defective units. When applied at General Electric, it became the largest quality control measure ever adopted in corporate America.

In simple terms, Welch explained, “Six Sigma is a quality program that, when all is said and done, improves your customers’ experience, lowers your costs and builds better leaders.

Six Sigma accomplishes that by reducing waste and inefficiency and by designing a company’s products and internal processes so that customers get what they want, when they want it, and when you promised it. Obviously, you want to make your customers more satisfied than your competitors do, whether you run Upper Crust Pizza or manufacture the most powerful jet engines.”13

Initiatives such as Six Sigma, globalization services and a focus on e-business helped make Welch’s years as CEO some of the most successful for GE. Among his accomplishments, for example, the company acquired RCA. According to sources, the RCA acquisition resulted in GE selling off RCA properties to other companies and ultimately keeping NBC as part of the GE portfolio of businesses. Likewise, Welch shifted GE business from manufacturing to financial services through numerous acquisitions. >

Stated author Janet Lowe, “Welch realized that the business world faced cataclysmic changes in its new global, high-technology environment. He also knew GE wasn’t ready for it.

“Today, however,” Lowe continued, crediting Welch’s influence and vision, “GE remains leader of the pack among the best-managed and most financially successful enterprises. Only a handful of U.S. corporations of GE’s age remain at the forefront of their industries and are formidable competitors in the global arena.”13

The Impact of True LeadershipIndeed, when Welch turned over the reins of the company to successor Jeffrey Immelt in 2001, he went out as the CEO of a company that everyone either wanted to work for or own. And statistics show the impact of his leadership and direction.

For instance, in 1980, the year before Welch became CEO, GE recorded revenues of roughly $26.8 billion; in 2000, the year before he left, they were nearly $130 billion. The company went from a market value of $14 billion to one of more than $410 billion at the time of his retirement, making it the most valuable and largest company in the world.

“Some observers,” noted Lowe in Jack Welch Speaks, “claim that Welch’s greatest contribution to GE has been the matching of technology and markets. Others say it is his role as a change agent. Certainly, he truly Americanized GE — bringing the democratic process, the voice of the ordinary worker into the corporate arena — while at the same time pushing GE into global leadership.”14

In fact, in 1999, Fortune named Welch the “Manager of the Century.” The Financial Times also named him one of the three most admired business leaders — along with Bill Gates of Microsoft and Carlos Ghosn of Nissan — in the world today.

He also became one of the foremost management experts and authors and, from 2005 to 2009, together with his wife, Suzy Welch, wrote a widely read weekly column, “The Welch Way.” The column appeared in BusinessWeek magazine and was published by the New York Times syndicate and appeared in more than 45 major newspapers around the world, reaching more than 8 million readers.

When Welch is not making cameo appearances on NBC’s hit sitcom “30 Rock” — with a lead character, played by Alec Baldwin, who is said to share a few Welch-esque traits — he is the head of Jack Welch, LLC, where he serves as special partner with the private equity firm, Clayton, Dubilier & Rice and is an adviser to IAC (Interactive Corp).

His other notable accomplishments include the Jack Welch Management Institute, a unique online MBA program aimed

at giving students around the world and at every career level the tools to transform their lives and the organizations of the future.

Welch also has rightly deserved the title of “philanthropist” for his charitable contributions, many made within his hometown. He donated one of the largest gifts to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem and established a $1-million scholarship program at UMass-Amherst, earmarked for Salem students. He and his wife, Suzy, also founded the Jack Welch Scholarship program at Salem State College where, every year, two incoming freshmen receive full four-year scholarships to the college’s Bertolon School of Business.

“If there is anything I would like to be remembered for it is that I helped people understand that leadership is helping other people grow and succeed,” Welch wrote in Winning. “To repeat myself, leadership is not just about you. It’s about them.

“I would also like to be remembered as a huge advocate of candor and meritocracy, and believing everyone deserves a chance.”15

PROFILECommunity Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania 2646 Peach Street Erie, PA 16508

Phone: 814/456-4206

Website: www.OurDonorsSaveLives.org The Community Blood Bank is the

only supplier of blood to the hospitals and patients in Erie County. Founded in 1966 by Hamot Medical Center (now UPMC Hamot), Saint Vincent Health Center, Millcreek Community Hospital and Metro Health Center, the Community Blood Bank collects approximately 42,000 blood products each year.

Unfortunately, blood donation is not something most people think about until someone they love has expe-rienced the need for blood, either through a trauma, a surgery, as part of their cancer treatment or as treat-ment for a variety of other illnesses. In fact, only one in 33 people donate blood, yet one in three people will need blood in their lifetime.

This means that if your employees or their families need blood in northwest and north central Pennsylvania, it will come from the Community Blood Bank’s generous donors.

We’ll Come to You Since we only collect blood from the areas where we supply it, Communi-ty Blood Bank relies on the residents of our partner counties to provide the blood needed for local treatment. Mobile blood drives are an easy way to allow your employees to help their community without asking them to give money.

Mobile blood drives account for 60 percent of the donations made to the Community Blood Bank. More than 100 different businesses and orga-nizations in Erie County hold blood drives with the Community Blood

Bank every year, supplying nearly 8,500 units of blood. Through the support of local businesses, patients’ lives are being prolonged, improved and saved.

Community Blood Bank can set up inside your business or hold the drive on board “Gus the Bus,” Erie County’s state-of-the-art Bloodmo-bile. The entire donation process generally takes 30 to 45 minutes per donor, and donors can give blood up to six times per year.

Leading the Way The Community Blood Bank is licensed by the Food & Drug Admin-istration and is the only blood bank in the region that performs all of its own testing, improving turnaround time from donation to transfusion, and also reducing costs. In addition, the Community Blood Bank’s laboratory was the first to implement a multiplex platform for nucleic acid testing on HIV, HCV and HBV, which means all three tests could be performed simul-taneously instead of individually. Our lab also was one of the first in the country to use the Immucor Neo for blood-typing and antibody screening.

Community Blood Bank is the only supplier of blood to the hospitals in the following counties:

• Erie County• Elk County• McKean County• Potter County• Tioga County• Warren County• Titusville Area Hospital in

Crawford County

“We have a lot of reasons for hosting on-site blood drives with the Com-munity Blood Bank — about 900, in fact. That’s how many lives our employees helped save through on-site blood donations last year. It’s one way we can make a meaningful difference in our community and in the lives of our friends, neighbors and loved ones right here at home.”

The patriotic Victory Belles perform regularly at the World War II Museum in New Orleans and will make a special appearance at the Association’s Annual Event on June 28 at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie.

Page 49: June 2011 Business Magazine

Whether it’s their red, white and blue patriotic costumes or their harmonic melody that harkens back to the songs of The Andrews Sisters, the emotional and nostalgic performance of the Victory Belles is one not to be missed.

The vocal trio, which has become a mainstay at the Nation-al World War II Museum headquartered in New Orleans, is making a special appearance at the Manufacturer & Business Association’s Annual Event on June 28 in Erie. It’s a dazzling performance chock full of Word War II-era musical classics, such as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Don’t Sit under the Apple Tree,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and “I’ll Be Seeing You,” as well as a salute to the five branches of the Armed Forces and a moving rendition of “God Bless America.”

“I expect,” explains Victoria Reed, director of the Belles, “it will be a hair-raising and emotional experience for everyone that night.”

Reed, who produced, directed and performed in USO shows for 10 years and was the entertainment director for the USO in New York from 1996 to 2002, joined USO World Headquarters, creating the USO Liberty Belles and American Spirit. Her recent group, the American Belles, which performed during the Roar on the Shore® bike rally in Erie in 2009 to benefit the local veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, served as the USO Liberty Belles for USO World Headquarters from 2003 through 2006. The Belles were the only USO troupe ever associated with USO World Headquarters in the organization's history.

“I just sort of took what I thought was the epitome of the 1940s,” Reed says of the act. “But the veterans really had a lot to do with the building of the show, so I feel like it is full of a lot of heart, because it is from years and years of

going to veterans’ hospitals and talking to the veterans and learning what they liked.”

According to the entertainer, it has always been a privilege and inspiration to perform before those who have served their country proudly.

“I had never experienced such an emotional moment until we sang ‘God Bless America.’ Many of the veterans would grab your hand so hard and they wouldn’t let go, and there would be tears running down their faces, and I was like, this is what patriotism is. This is what it’s all about,” Reed recalls of her early performances. “I was so attached to how it made them feel that I just wanted to make a life of bringing shows to our veterans and active duty.”

Recently, Reed decided to take her talents South to the Smithsonian-affiliated National World War II Museum, formerly the D-Day Museum, where she is entertainment director for the newly named Victory Belles at their The Stage Door Canteen. The venue features such productions as “On The Air,” a live radio broadcast set in 1945 featuring dancing, singing and a 17-piece big band, as well as photographs of all the stars — Bob Hope, Dinah Shore and Lena Horne, among others — who have performed in the Stage Door Canteens across the country and around the globe during World War II.

“It’s a really great space,” explains Reed of the new theater, “and I’m really proud to be able to keep the music of the 1940s alive every day.”

With their upbeat, big band sound, the Victory Belles’ all-American salute continues to celebrate that patriotic era and our nation’s heroes.

When asked what sets Northwest Savings Bank apart as a commercial lender, Donna Carlino, senior vice president of the local bank’s commercial lending division, smiles broadly and says, “That’s easy. We’re local.”

With 20 bank offices in Erie County, and 150 more in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Maryland and Florida, Northwest Savings Bank can be reached easily from almost anywhere in this area. Carlino says it’s exactly the same with the company’s commercial lenders. “We live here,” she says. “We not only work here, we’re all involved in our communities. We serve on local boards. We know the local markets, local businesses, the local economy and local conditions. Best of all, we have local lending authority. We don’t have to wait around for decisions on our loans to be made by some committee from out of town. We make the decisions right here in Erie County.”

She points out that this is a major benefit for the bank’s customers. “Northwest is a local, hometown bank,” she states. “A customer can talk to a lender face to face, either at the bank or at their place of business, and get an answer ... quickly. That’s

something a person should be looking for when they’re making a decision about where to do their banking. We have a good reputation in the community for taking care of businesspeople, treating them with respect, the way they want to be treated.”

“Furthermore,” she adds, “we get the privilege of developing relationships with our clients. We get to become friends, to be involved with them and their business. The business person gains a resource as well as a loan, someone to turn to for help and advice. And it’s not just one person. Banking at Northwest offers a team approach with access to all our business partners, Business Services for cash management, deposit services, retirement accounts, direct deposit, remote capture and the like, Wealth Management Services for employee benefits, investments, and financial counseling, Boetger and Associates and Veracity Design for employee services and insurance plans, our community banking network for payroll services and personal banking. The list goes on and on.”

Hired in 1997 as the first commercial lender in Northwest’s Erie Region, Carlino leads Northwest’s commercial lending initiatives in the Erie area. “We have a staff of 10,” she says.

Extraordinary Commercial Lenders

Northwest Savings Bank is committed to the communities it serves. Shown here are Business Services Representatives Pam Rinn, Jennifer Marz and Shirley Anderson at the Watson-Curtze Mansion, located on historic Millionaire’s Row in Erie.

“Seven of them are commercial lenders and they’re seven of the best commercial lenders in Northwestern Pennsylvania. They’re experienced and flexible and they have a wide range of management experience. They’ve made commercial loans of every type term, letter of credit, line of credit, construction, Municipal, and so on to every type of entity possible, from manufacturers to nonprofits to real estate development, professional developments and many more," she states. “Commercial lending is not a ‘one size fits all’ kind of endeavor. It takes skill and experience to find the right way to accomplish a client’s goals. Our people can do that.”

One of the most important things to stress, she says, is that Northwest Savings Bank is making loans. Since 2008, many banks have found it difficult to grow their commercial loan portfolios. Northwest has seen substantial growth in recent years and sees no reason that the trend should not continue. “The economy hasn’t kept our bank from making loans,” Carlino explains. “We plan to make many, many more right here in the years to come.”

We will be easy to do business with.We will be a leader in quality. We will provide flexible solutions to moving. We will provide easy-to-understand pricing. We will establish our company as the preferred choice among customers. At J.H. Bennett Companies, this is our culture. This is our philosophy. This is who we are. Spanning three generations as one of the coun-try’s oldest moving companies, we continue to lead the way as the region’s largest provider of moving and specialized transportation services. As a United Van Lines agent, America’s No. 1 mover, we have the ability to assist our client with relocation needs anywhere. From Los An-geles to Dallas, Boston to St. Louis, and London to Singapore, we can arrange and manage a relocation as if it were moving from one side of town to the other.Great companies lead through challenging times by finding ways to better serve customers while setting a foundation for future growth. Custom-ers expect to connect with companies on their schedules, wherever they are, and in the way they choose. They expect a range of service options and prices that are easy to understand. When they make a purchase, they expect the company to operate safely and have respect for the environment. In the end, they expect to receive high-quality service that they can enthu-siastically recommend.2010 Customer Choice Award It is one thing to say you provide high-quality service; it is another to prove it and, at J.H Ben-nett Companies, we have. We are the recent recipient of United Van Lines’ Customer Choice Award. The award is based on the comments and replies from our most demanding critics, our customers, as well as exceeding United Van Lines’ quality criteria. United Van Lines has been measuring customer approval for many years and acknowledging those agents who have never waivered from their commitment to pro-vide the highest quality of service possible. The bar for being recognized as a top-performing agent has never been higher.

Who is measured, you may ask? Our Move Consultants, the most experienced in the region, are equipped with the latest “tablet” technology to provide accurate and timely estimates. They are our customers’ first contact and provide the critical information required to begin the entire move process. Our Move Coordinators also follow a prescribed format and have the responsibility of notating and responding to customer requests before, during, and after the move. Our customers mea-sure them on communication, problem-solving skills and attention to detail. The most important people on the service-end of the move process, however, are our Van Opera-tors and Service Crews. They are measured for their packing, loading and delivery skills, the care of the residence at origin and destination, the safe handling of a customer’s most personal possessions and, of course, the attitude and manner with which they perform these services.Go Mini’s, our portable container division, also has given our customers yet another option to assist them with any moving or storage need. The containers are of steel construction, translu-cent roof, ventilated and a roll-up door for ease of access. The moving containers offer a great value for the “do it yourself” customer. We deliver the 12-foot, 16 -foot, or 20-foot container, then you load it yourself or we’ll load it for you, and we deliver it to our secure site or your new location. These portable containers are used for storage, local and intrastate moves, home staging, home restoration, and even disaster recovery.Change. Progress. Success. Advantage. At J.H. Bennett Companies, we represent the largest and most progressive van line in the country. We have the region’s newest and most modern warehouse specifically designed for the moving and storage industry. We have embraced the latest technology for ease of access and communication speed. We also are relentlessly focused on the future – a future that is rooted in our understanding our customers’ needs and investing in our region to maintain our leadership. FirstEnergy subsidiar-ies and affiliates are involved in the generation, transmission and distribu-tion of electricity, as well as energy management and other energy- related services. Its 10 operating companies comprise the nation’s largest investor-owned electric system based on 6 million customers served within a nearly 65,000-square-mile area of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, New Jersey and New York. Its generation subsidiaries control ap-proximately 24,000 megawatts (MW) of capacity from a diversified mix of regional coal, nuclear, natural gas, oil, hydroelectric, pumped-storage and contracted wind resources – including more than 2,200 MW of renewable energy. On behalf of the Manufacturer & Business Association

(MBA) Board of Governors, I wanted to take a moment

to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to

lead this great organization over the past year.

True, it has been a challenging economic time for many

businesses, but those of you who have taken on leadership

roles in your companies have kept your eye on the future

— as the Board of Governors has — working feverishly to

attain your organization’s most critical goals. And that is

why here, at the MBA, we are proud to play a small part

in those accomplishments in any way we can.

The Association’s focus, as it has been for the past 106

years, is providing the assistance and resources to help

area businesses succeed. We continue to do that with

our offering of exceptional services — our low-cost

energy program, discounted group insurance, regionally

recognized computer and professional development

training courses, attorney supported HR and legal

services, legislative lobbying and more — delivered

by a skilled team of professionals, who are dedicated

to carrying out the Association’s mission every day.

Because, as we all know, it is only by keeping pace with

the evolving needs of your companies that we all prosper

and grow.

That is why, as I pass the torch to 2011-2012 Board

of Governors Chairman John B. Pellegrino Sr., P.E.,

president and CEO of Ridg-U-Rak, Inc., I am confident

that the MBA’s leadership is in the best of hands. Not

only is he a longtime business leader and member of

the Manufacturer & Business Association, but he also is

an ambassador for the future of manufacturing in this

magnificent country of ours.

I trust that John, along with executive committee

members Dale Deist and John Cline, new Board members

William Hilbert Jr. of Reddog Industries, Inc. and J. Gordon

Naughton of J.H. Bennett Moving & Storage, Inc., as well

as the rest of my fellow Board members, will continue to

put your interests at the forefront of every Association

decision they make.

The Board of Governors consists of great leaders who

have both drive and determination in the industries they

represent, and a passion for achieving results. They also

value the MBA for its rich history and tradition, and they

know, as I do, that by leading by example they are leading

the Association into an even brighter future.

Once again, thank you for the honor of serving alongside

them, and you, as Association chairman in 2010-2011 and

immediate past chairman of the Board of

Governors in 2011-2012.

Sincerely,

Dan Ignasiak

“As we all know, it is only by keeping pace with the evolving needs of your companies that we all prosper and grow.”

It’s true. No broker fees. No kidding. The Employers’ Energy Alliance of Pennsylvania, Inc. (EEA-PA) buys energy directly from the power grid at wholesale prices and passes the savings directly to its customers – who’ve already saved more than $3 million in little over a year.

For employers, exercising their right to choose an electricity supplier can mean a significant savings to their operation’s bottom line.

And since artificial rate caps were lifted throughout Pennsylvania on December 31, 2010 — the first time in 15 years — that choice has been made simpler thanks to pro-grams, such as the Employers’ Energy Alliance of Pennsylvania, Inc. (EEA-PA).

A subsidiary of the Manufacturer & Business Association, the EEA-PA, established in 2009, offers businesses of every size the opportunity to obtain the best electricity rates possible for less than what the utility is able to sell it for — giving these employ-ers more financial control.

For example, participating EEA-PA members in PPL territory were able to realize an average savings of about 22 percent compared with PPL. In the Penelec territory in May 2011, customers saw an estimated average savings of approximately 24 percent in their energy costs.

“Already, the EEA-PA has generated more than $2 million in savings for our custom-ers in 2010 and approaching $1.5 million in the first four months of 2011,” explains EEA-PA President J. David Bell. “It’s energy savings made simple.”

For employers who don’t have the time for an exhaustive search of electricity suppli-ers, but want to reap the benefits of energy choice, the EEA-PA is an ideal solution.

Employers’ Energy Allianceof Pennsylvania, Inc.

60 < www.mbausa.org < June 2011

Page 65: June 2011 Business Magazine

The Alliance utilizes a simple enrollment process and eliminates the added costs of broker fees, marketing costs or profit margins by buying energy direct from the power grid. Participating EEA-PA members also enjoy the flexibility of a short-term contract while significantly lowering their energy bills.

“It’s a typical problem you have as a small-business owner that you don’t have enough time to do everything that needs to be done, such as finding an alternative en-ergy supplier,” explains Bell. “The EEA-PA is an easy way to decrease your energy costs and add money in your pocket that you didn’t have last month.”

Benefiting Companies of All Sizes, IndustriesOne of the unique aspects of the EEA-PA program is that eligibility is not restricted by size or industry. Not only can larger companies — using in excess of 30 million kilowatt hours a year — benefit from the program, but also small- and medium-size businesses, such as non-profits, schools, dentist and doctor offices, retail stores and manufacturers.

To participate in the EEA-PA, however, these businesses must be members of the MBA, the largest employers’ as-sociation of its kind in the United States, which is com-prised of more than 4,500 companies who employ more than 165,000 people throughout 27 counties in Pennsyl-vania, Ohio and New York. MBA membership is a sound investment that gives these employers a diverse group of free and discounted services — from legal and HR consulting to professional development and computer training, insurance and employee benefit products, con-ference center facilities, payroll services and government affairs support — all designed to help their businesses succeed.

“The EEA-PA and MBA are a powerful resource for em-ployers,” says Bell. “When you become a member of the MBA utilizing our low-cost energy savings program, you are gaining a competitive advantage for your operation.”

Ensuring that Your Company is the Right FitIn order to be eligible for the EEA-PA, the Alliance first conducts an energy analysis on every customer to en-sure that the company’s electricity use can benefit from the program.

The analysis requires only the company name, address, phone number, meter number and signature, along with a copy of a recent bill, to compare the EEA-PA price to the utility price and project the estimated savings.

Once the analysis is reviewed with a representative of the EEA-PA, a business can then proceed with the application process. This streamlined process includes completing an MBA membership application, if not a member already, credit check, billing history and/or payment release.

“In most cases,” notes Bell, “a business can be fully en-rolled in the program in about 30 to 45 days.”

Under the current program model, the EEA-PA can supply electricity in any way the member customer de-sires. Some want the lowest possible cost, which can be achieved by purchasing on the day-ahead market (DAM). Some larger users, which exceed 10 million kilo-watt hours a year, will fix a block of energy for a year to assure a budget is met, or a portion of the load will be fixed and a portion will be purchased on the DAM. The EEA-PA can handle all of these member requests.

“The reason for these options,” notes Bell, “is it gives these employers better control over their budget.”

Working for YouThe EEA-PA team of representatives — which includes Bell, Chuck Jenkins and Victoria Killoran — stand ready to answer any questions a business owner may have about the Alliance or energy choice.

Informational briefings are held at the Manufacturer & Business Association Conference Center in Erie and We-binars are held at 3 p.m. every Monday on www.eeapa.com to explain the program in more detail.

To learn more about the EEA-PA, visit the Alliance’s website at www.eeapa.com or call 814/833-3200 or 800/815-2660.

Established: 2009 by the Manufacturer & Business Association, headquartered in Erie, Pennsylvania.

What is the EEA-PA? The only wholesale pass-through supplier in the Commonwealth, the EEA-PA is licensed and regulated to purchase directly from MISO or PJM Interconnection LLC, the re-gional electricity transmission organization that controls the grid in Pennsylvania and 12 other states. Through this framework, EEA-PA members are purchasing energy at the same discounted price as the largest electricity users.

Which Areas Does the EEA-PA Cover? The EEA-PA currently supplies energy throughout Pennsylvania, including Penn Power and PPL territories. With the completion of First Energy's purchase of Allegheny Power, the EEA-PA will soon begin supplying to that area as well.

Will My Utility Stay the Same Once I Enroll in the EEA-PA? Yes. Your business will have the same utility, ensuring that you have continued customer service in the event of a power outage or maintenance-related issue.

Who Can Enroll? Any business (including educational or health-care institutions, commercial or retail operations, etc.) that is a member or becomes a member of the Manufacturer & Business Association. There is no limit on the size of the energy user. Residential customers cannot be accepted at the present time.

How Much Does it Cost to Enroll? Enrollment is free, but participat-ing members must be members in good standing of the Manufac-turer & Business Association.

How Do I Enroll? Contact J. David Bell or Chuck Jenkins at 814/833-3200 or 800/815-2660, Victoria Killoran at 570/651-2959 or 570/322-9840, or visit the EEA-PA website, www.eeapa.com.

Lending experience is just one of the key reasons Stacy Breter has been a success as the mortgage specialist at the Erie General Electric FCU since 2007.

In 1992, CitiGroup hired Breter as a lender but, by 1995, she so exceeded their expectations, that they moved her to mortgages, where she worked for another three years. Wells Fargo Home Mortgage recognized her talent and soon snapped her up. She excelled as a mortgage lender for another nine years until 2007 when she was hired upon recommendation at the Erie General Electric FCU.

After nearly 20 years and experience with all types of mortgage lending, Breter is proud to offer Credit Union members such services as free seminars on First Time Home Buying and Credit, counseling and action plans for future home-buying opportunities, and free pre-approvals. Her personalized mortgage lending approach means she will work with members to determine their best lending option, not just the biggest loan they can afford.

“What a privilege and a blessing to be able to lead the Erie City Mission as it celebrates 100 years of serving God and the community,” says Pastor Rick Crocker, who serves as ECM Executive

Director at an exciting time. Aside from housing the homeless, feeding the hungry and rescuing the lost each day, the Mission is celebrating its centennial in 2011 and beginning a three-phase rebuilding project, all in the same year.

ECM is a vital asset in downtown Erie. Thanks to many private, church and corporate partners, ECM provides emergency shelter for homeless men. The New Life Program provides long-term transitional housing plus spiritual and physical re-habilitation for men, most of whom suffer from the disease of addiction. ECM also provides between 200 and 300 free meals a day to any man, woman and child in need. Emergency gro-ceries and clothing are available weekly, and the ECM operates the Thrifty Shopper and Angel Bay stores that benefit Mission programs.

“None of this happens without the many wonderful donors and volunteers who have a heart for the Mission,” says Crocker.

Pastor Rick Crocker joined the Erie City Mission team in late 2009 after a very successful 20 years as pastor and religious leader at First Alliance Church in Millcreek Township. He has a Master of Divinity degree (with honors) from Asbury Theological Seminary. He also enjoys travel, reading, music and gardening. Organization Name: Stairways Behavioral HealthLocation: Erie and Crawford counties Website: www.stairwaysbh.org

Fifty years ago, a few determined women resolved to answer the profound need of individuals re-covering from mental illness in our community.

Major advancements in psychiatric treatments and medi-cation resulted in the annual discharge of hundreds of patients from state hospitals. Many of these individuals lacked self-care and social skills and knew little about life outside of the hospital.

On April 6, 1961, 22 members of the Erie Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women launched “Stairways” – named for the staircase clients walked up to arrive at the social rehabilitation center and toward a new life.

Today, according to President and CEO Bill McCarthy, Stairways Behavioral Health is Joint Commission certified, and is the most progressive mental health care provider in Erie and Crawford counties, serving more than 9,000 people annually and employing more than 400 full- and part-time mental health professionals.

The conviction of the founders remains Stairways’ mission 50 years later: assisting persons with mental health-care needs at any stage of life in their recovery by providing comprehensive rehabili-tation, treatment and supports essential for living, working, learning and participating fully in the community.
