Port Gamble Preservation Awareness March Friday night of the Port Gamble event, following the

Street Battle, a 'foraging party' will be organized and dispatched by Union HQ. Those who wish to partici-pate will form up and march out of town, flags flying, carrying with them everything needed for the night. Once the trailhead is reached, the participants will take on the impression of an Army marching

through enemy territory. The march will be conducted with flankers and skirmishers. Staying in character for 1864 will be encouraged and is solely dependant upon each participant.

Once the area of our 'outpost' camp is reached, roughly two miles, camp will be arranged. Since the ‘outpost’ is in ‘enemy’ territory, pickets will be posted and guards mounted. Guidance will be provided in this area since this type of impression is seldom used and implemented by reenactors. This impression and duty will be shared by all members equally and will run throughout the night, the more participants there are, the shorter the guard shifts.

In the ‘main’ camp area, there will be a picket fire around which to gather, sing songs, cook rations, tell tall tales, and make new friends. Come morning, camp will be struck, after a fresh cup of coffee of course, and then the marchers will strike off towards town.

The goal of the march is to raise our own awareness of what soldiering actually consisted of, minus the battle portion. In doing so, we can better appreciate the efforts of those we portray, better preserving their memory. In keeping with the theme of a Preservation March, participants will be encouraged to seek sponsors or donations. Although not required, there is a suggested $5 donation to participate.

There will be a fire extinguisher, cell phone/two way radio, and potable water at the outpost camp, or in close proximity. The safety of the participants is a prime consideration. There will be at least one shuttle to the outpost Friday night to bring participants who want to experience the outpost but either arrives too late or physically cannot march. Saturday morning there will be a shuttle to the outpost for those who desire to march back to town and to return those who cannot march.

For those new to ‘campaigning’ or living out of your haversack, or even for those ‘veterans’ of a few campaigns, this is a good opportunity to give it a try. You can find useful advice and tips here: http://p222.ezboard.com/fthegristmillfrm1.showMessage?topicID=1028.topic

It is recommended that each participant buddy up with at least one, up to four, other marchers. This group commonly referred to as a mess, will make the experience more memorable by sharing rations, details, and good conversation. Many solid and long lasting friendships have been made just sitting around a campfire.

This outpost is open to anyone willing to adopt a Union impression for the night as we will be returning in sufficient time to make breakfast, company formations, and drill. All funds raised in this endeavor will be distributed to a non-profit organization(s) by a vote of march participants.

Anyone interested in participating should direct any questions or concerns regarding the march or campaigning to John Persinger at [email protected] or (253) 941-4770. Please RSVP to your company commander or to Col. Persinger prior to the event. The march will leave at 8:00 PM on Friday.

the discussion stage. At Marblemount there were many spectators and the crowds enjoyed it. There were 2 news reporters present. The Spokane event is looking good and we hope that attendance of members at the event is good.

Old Business-None Committee Reports

Event Planning- Doug Miller of Tacoma approached the WCWA about discussing the idea of having an event at Pt. Defiance. A few people from the WCWA showed interest in attending the preliminary meeting. No date has yet been set but it will be on a Saturday or Sunday and will not be scheduled till after the 4th of July. It will be held in the city limits of Tacoma . Yakima-It is still on for 2008 but no more informa-tion has been received from Bruce Frazier.

Please remember to get all event information for

2008 to the board as soon as possible.

Finance-NTR

Living History-NTR

Outreach/Publicity-The binder on the history of each and every unit is being put together. Thank you to the units who sent in their history. Those units who have not yet sent in their history should do so as soon as possible so it can be put in the binder before the Spokane event. Cookbook sales are going well. The Washington Historical Museum is interested in doing something similar to what WCWA has done at the Tacoma museum. More information will be given at a later date.

Insurance-WCWA members are covered when they go to events in Oregon . Oregon Civil War re-enactors are covered when they attend Washington events. Coverage of Civil War re-enactors from other states is still being researched and discussed. More information will be forthcoming at June meeting. (Tom gave report)

Webpage-Heather will be up-load the information she has received. Please check-out the website in 2 days. Let Heather know what changes need to be made. Membership numbers will be your log-on.

Add to Section G. of the Bylaws:

9. An Honorary Membership may be conferred on any

person, not a member of the WCWA, who has contrib-

uted to the mission or commitment of the WCWA. An

Honorary Membership may be granted by a majority

vote at any regular Board of Directors’ Meeting and

will be renewed annually. Upon

approval, the Treasurer shall issue a regular WCWA

membership card with the words “Honorary Mem-

ber” added.

Add to Section G. of the Bylaws:

10.A Lifetime Membership may be conferred on any

WCWA member, former or current, no longer able to

participate in WCWA activities due to medical

condition , age, or other like circumstance. A Lifetime

Membership may be granted by a majority vote at any

regular Board of Directors’ Meeting and can be

renewed annually. Upon approval, the Treasurer

shall issue a regular WCWA membership card with

the words ”Lifetime Member” added.

These two types of membership will be discussed and voted on at the June meeting.

New Business

New Membership Application- At the meeting last month it was suggested that we put the occupation line back on the WCWA applications. At this meeting it was again mentioned. We also discussed the idea of having a single membership form instead of having to do individual forms for each member of the family. We also discussed the importance of emergency information readily available at all events. It was suggested that emergency pkt. information on individuals would be sealed and only sent to one specific member of the board. ( Right now Cindy has that information since she is in charge of membership). It was suggested that this issue be revisited at a later date.

Camp Impression-Heather Sturgill handed out a proposal to those members present suggesting that at each specific event a reward is given to one individual or family for a specific reason( Examples-Best per-sona, Best Camp etc.). It was then discussed. This is all ready done in the Confederate camp(Honor Unit) but would now include all members and various

branches of the club. (For more Specifics, Contact Heather Sturgill, your unit commander, or a

board member). Winner would have recognition in dispatch and website, photo, article and a reward to be determined by the WCWA Board.

Past Event Reports

Honoring Their Memory went well and had a good turnout over Easter Weekend.

Headstone Dedication-It went well and the WCWA was well-represented. The family was most appreciative. Multiple Generations of the family were in attendance. The re-enactors were given lunch and dinner. With the money from this event, Washington State flags were purchased for the cemetery. Thanks to all who attended this Headstone Dedication.

15th Alabama Hovander Event-There was around 1600 students who went through the stations. It was well done and well- received by all who attended. Many potential recruits gotten. This event had to compete with the Plants/Flowers Event being held at the same time.

14th Cavalry Cheney Event-The club was well represented at this event. Thanks to all the units that attended this event. It was well-received by all who attended and some recruiting was done. This event will be done again next year.

The event cards will be asked for when going on the battlefield and intermittently in camps.. There was a change in schedule for Tug-of –War between units.. These will happen on Sunday at pre-determine times.

Snohomish Valley View School Event-It will be held on May 18th at Valley View. For more information, contact Peter Jensen.

Ed. Note: The following poem was taken from the book “The Blue Coats” (and how they lived, fought and died for the un-ion) by Captain John Truesdale, Jones Brothers & Co. l867. While the work is directed to the soldiers in blue, it equally applies to those in gray. R. Bruce Smith

ROLL CALL

“Corporal Green!” the orderly cried; “Here!” was the answer, loud and clear, From the lips of a soldier who stood near, And “Here!” was the word the next replied

“Cyrus Drew!” – then a silence fell – This time no answer followed the call: Only his rear-man had seen him fall, Killed or wounded he could not tell.

There they stood in the failing light,

These men of battle, with grave, dark looks, As plain to be read as open books;

While slowly gathered the shades of night

The ferns on the hill-side were splashed with blood, And down in the corn, where the poppies grew, Were redder stains than the poppies knew; And Crimson-dyed is the river’s flood

For the foe had crossed from the other side

That day in the face of murderous fire That swept them down in its terrible ire; And their life-blood went to color the tide.

“Herbert Cline!” – At the call there came

Two stalwart soldiers into the line, Bearing between them this Herbert Cline

Wounded and bleeding, to answer his name.

“Ezra Kerr” – and a voice answered “Here!” “Hiram Kerr!” but no man replied:

They were brothers, these two; the sad wind sighed. And a shudder crept through the corn-field near.

“Ephriam Dean!” – then a soldier spoke:

“Dean carried our regiment’s colors,” he said, “When our ensign was shot; I left him dead, Just after the enemy wavered and broke.

“Close to the roadside his body lies;

I paused a moment and gave him to drink; He murmured his mother’s name, I think;

And Death came with it and closed his eyes.

‘Twas a victory – yes: but it cost us dear; For that company’s roll, when called at night, Of a hundred men who went into the fight, Numbered but twenty that answered “Here!”

Historic Fort Steilacoom's

2nd Annual Immersion Event

The Board of Directors of the Historic Fort Steilacoom Association would like to take this opportunity to invite all of the members of the WCWA to attend our second annual

Total Immersion Event to be held September 21 - 23, 2007.

This event is open to all, but since the date portrayed is September of 1860, it is limited to Federal Regulars and Civilian Impressions only. Our Confederate brethren are encouraged to come either in a galvanized state or by adopting a civilian persona. There are plenty of roles to choose from. This event will allow everyone who participates to eat and sleep in an original Civil War era outpost for 45 hours straight! Fire cooked meals will be provided for all participants. The event will run continuously from 6 p.m. on Friday evening till 3 p.m. Sunday. Last year's function drew participants from as far away as British Columbia and they were not disappointed. Their only criticism was that it was not longer. Well, this year we made it longer! interested parties are encouraged to reply to [email protected] or call Gideon Pete of the US Medical Department at 253 - 720 - 8179.
