Greenspace purchased this 1.6-acre property in 1999 to preserve the natural character of thecreek side area. Restoration efforts along the Santa Rosa Creek can be a model for similar workelsewhere. We envision the majority of the site as an urban refuge, a place away and distinct fromthe town around it. We expect that this nature trail will link with the larger Town Trail. The

Chinese Association Hall will be moved back to its approximate original location near the creek, and eventually be restored and be open for viewing.

During the 1870s, Cambria became the social center for Chinese workers in this region. Theirsocial activities were primarily located in an area which became known as the Chinese Center. Atthe Center the Chinese would celebrate traditional holidays and events, write letters home, shareinformation, gamble, cook, and converse in their own language. The Center consisted of a bunk-house, laundries, miscellaneous structures and what people have called the Chinese Temple orJoss House, but what our consulting historians tell us is more accurately called the AssociationHall. The property now owned by Greenspace was at the heart of the Chinese Center. The onlystructure that remains is the Association Hall.

    The Chinese Association

Hall in Mendocino hasbeen renovated and is now

    used as a meditationcenter.

The Association Hall is clearly avery important cultural resource for the Cambria

community as a rare and intact example of areligious/fraternal hall built in the vernacular

tradition, for Chinese workers employed in thehistorical seaweed export industry.
