MASS SCHEDULE

Page 3: JUNE 10, 2018 TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3

Today the Church begins the liturgical season of

Ordinary Time. It is a liturgical season that celebrates

the work of Christ in the Church and the world. It is the

+me of mission, to go forth as a disciple and to proclaim

the Lord Jesus. During Ordinary Time, the Scripture

readings provide an opportunity for us to encounter

Christ, grow in Christ and to share Christ (Archbishop

Vigneron, Unleash the Gospel, p47).

Ordinary Time is the longest season of the liturgical

year, thirtythree or thirtyfour weeks, which equals

about twothirds of the liturgical year (refer to the green

in the picture above). It begins at the end of the

Christmas season “on the Monday a,er the feast of the

Bap$sm of the Lord and con$nues $ll Tuesday before

Ash Wednesday … begins again a,er Pentecost and ends

before the First Sunday of Advent” (General Norms for

the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, 44). In other

words, Ordinary Time is in twoparts, and the length

alone alerts us to the significance and importance of

Ordinary Time.

During Ordinary Time, a different Gospel is read each

year: Ma/hew in cycle A, Mark in cycle B and Luke in

cycle C. This year we have been reading from the

Gospel of Mark or cycle B. Every year, excerpts of the

Gospel of John are read, especially during the Sundays

of Lent, the Easter Season, on special feast days, or in

the summer of cycle B. The cycles begin on the First

Sunday of Advent and end on the last Sunday of the

Church Year, Christ the King.

Of all the Sunday readings, the Gospels are shown

special reverence because Christ is being proclaimed to

us. The new Roman Missal describes the Gospel as “the

high point of the Liturgy of the Word…great reverence is

to be shown to this reading…with special marks of

honor” (2011 Roman Missal, p. 33, par. 60). For

example, a special cover embellishes the Gospel Book,

candles lead the procession, and the deacon or priest

proclaim the Gospel

At Va+can II, the bishops expressed the hope that “the

treasures of the Bible…be opened up more lavishly, so

that a richer fare may be provided for the faithful at the

table of God’s Word” (SC, art. 51). The result of the

1969 revision of the Sunday readings has been one of

the most crea+ve and welcomed reforms of Va+can II

because the “treasures” of the Bible were opened

before us. It is amazing to realize that since 1969, we

have heard the Bible read to us in the threeyear cycle

of readings approximately sixteen +mes.

STEWARDSHIP/ CSA

OPENING DOORS TO GROW WITH CHRIST

The theme of the 2018 CSA campaign is Opening Doors

to Grow with Christ. The CSA campaign allows us to

support both the ministry of the Archdiocese of Detroit

and ensure the stability of our parish and school for the

future.

A giS to the CSA is one of the best ways to benefit the

parish. Any amounts donated in excess of our CSA goal

are returned to the parish without any tax by the

Archdiocese. Addi+onally, CSA dona+ons do NOT impact

the CSA target for subsequent years.

We strongly encourage all parishioners to make their CSA

pledge through online giving. This is a great way to

reduce the overhead cost of the CSA campaign. There is a

custom site to make your CSA pledge on behalf of

St. Hugo: h/p://sthugo.aodcsa.org While our weekly

contribu+ons are vital to opera+ng our parish,

investments in the CSA are also extremely important due

to the following:

• Beginning June 1, please make all checks payable to

the Archdiocese of Detroit CSA

• All investments help support the work which the

Archdiocese performs in Southeastern

Michigan. This includes funding to Sacred Heart

Major Seminary, evangeliza+on programs, Chris+an

service and health care ministries, Catholic

educa+on, youth ministry programs, and much more.

• Amounts invested in the CSA do not impact St.

Hugo’s CSA target for future years.

Visit www.sthugo.org or hp:sthugo.aodcsa.org

to make your CSA pledge online.

We thank you for any contribuon towards the success

of the CSA campaign this year!

THE ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS

Today’s Scripture passages speak of darkness in the

world. In the Book of Genesis, Adam and Eve fall from

grace. The devilserpent tricks them into partaking of the

forbidden fruit from the Tree of Life. Their fall is the basis

for Catholic teaching on original sin, which stains all of us

at birth. In St. Mark’s Gospel, the evangelist retells the

reac+on of the scribes (lawyers, in Jesus’ day) when they

realize that Christ is driving out demons. They boldly

state,He is possessed by Beelzebul. Jesus wisely refutes

their claim a divided kingdom cannot last. As faithful

stewards, we are aware of the darkness of evil in the

world that leads to tempta+on, yet this evil does not

master us. Sin and death result from Adam and Eve’s fall.

S+ll, the Good News of Jesus encourages us: He humbled

Himself to live among us; He died for our sins on Good

Friday; He rose from the dead on Easter Sunday; He

ascended to heaven and sends the Holy Spirit at

Pentecost. In other words, evil, sin, and death do not

triumph. We have the victory in Christ! To strengthen us

to “fight the good fight,” par+cipate regularly in the

sacrament of Reconcilia+on and partake of Holy

Communion at Sunday Mass.

18 ST. HUGO OF THE HILLS | BLOOMFIELD HILLS

JUNE 10, 2018

Have you ever felt judged by your family? St. John Paul II

noted that the family "is the cradle of life and love" (On

the Lay Members of Christ's Faithful, 40). Yet unmet

expecta+ons and divergent priori+es can cause tension

in even the most loving family situa+ons. This is true for

us, and it was true for Jesus!

In today's Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth.

A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing

s+ff opposi+on from his family. This was likely Jesus'

large, extended family. The Semi+c language has no

specific words for extended rela+ves, so everyone is

"brother" or "sister." The en+re clan has go/en wind of

Jesus' preaching, and they are not amused. "They set out

to seize him, for they said, 'He is out of his mind.'" To

make ma/ers worse, the religious authori+es even

accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It's a mess

by any standards.

The family's perspec+ve is perhaps understandable. In

Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive

schooling and appren+ceships, none of which Jesus had

done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the

rabbi. For them, Jesus' bold preaching threatened the

reputa+on of their family!

Jesus' words to his family can seem controversial. "Who

are my mother and my brothers?" Yet Jesus knows what

he is about. He has always known he would be about the

business of his Heavenly Father. And what is that

business? It is the business of the new covenant and the

Kingdom of God. In this Kingdom, we are all adopted

sons and daughters of the King. Jesus begins, even now,

to expand the perspec+ve of his listeners. Being

welcomed into this family does not depend on our

families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted

commitment to "do the will of God."

His mother and his brothers arrived.Standing outside they sent word to him and called him.A crowd seated around him told him,"Your mother and your brothers and your sistersare outside asking for you."But he said to them in reply,"Who are my mother and my brothers?"And looking around at those seated in the circle he said,"Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of Godis my brother and sister and mother."
